Pre-Prep SchoolPre-School to Year 2

StructurePupils are based in form groups whichare both teaching and pastoral units.The form teacher takes primary interestin the pastoral and academic welfare ofhis/her pupils.

Pupils are taught in form groups for alllessons. Sometimes groups are taughtat different paces within classes toensure individual needs within a classare met.

Class sizes are small.

CurriculumThe curriculum reflects the demands ofthe Early Years Foundation Stage aswell as the Primary School Review. Theday is structured to allow for breaks inthe morning and the afternoon and forlunch which is supervised.

Teaching FacilitiesTeaching facilities for Pre-School,Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 arespecially designed for this group ofpupils who have access to their owndedicated outdoor area. They alsobenefit from the use of all Foundationfacilities relevant to children of this age:they join older Pocklington Prep Schoolpupils in Years 3-6 for some assemblies,they have access to the Tom StoppardTheatre, campus sports facilities andthe swimming pool. Specialist musicteaching is also available on site tothose children whose parents wish themto have individual lessons.

At the end of Year 2 children will betested alongside new Year 3 applicantsbut they will normally progress to Year 3(See page 9 for further details onadmissions).

PrepYears 3-6

Pupils are taught in form groups for alllessons other than in Years 5 and 6when Mathematics and English aretaught in ability groups. Sometimesgroups are taught at different paceswithin classes to ensure individualneeds within a class are met.


Pocklington Prep School Year 6 pupilswill normally progress to Year 7,provided there are no concerns about achild’s behaviour or ability, which havebeen previously communicated toparents. Some Year 6 Prep School pupilswill sit assessments for the purposes ofacademic awards.

THE LOWER SCHOOL – 1ST AND 2ND YEARS(School Years 7 and 8) Age 11+ to 12+

StructureLower School HousesAll pupils are allocated to one of the four Lower School dayhouses (Dolman, Hutton, Gruggen, Wilberforce).

The Housemaster or Housemistress is the teacher primarilyinvolved in the academic and pastoral progress of eachmember of his/her house.

Boarders entering the Lower School will join either DolmanHouse (boys) or Orchard House (girls). See staff list on page 7for day and boarding House staff.

The Head of Lower School oversees the academic andpastoral progress of all the boys and girls, day and boarding.

Teaching GroupsIn the 1st Year teaching in all subjects is in mixed abilityforms. At the end of the Michaelmas term, English andMathematics begin teaching in ability-based sets.

In the 2nd Year teaching in English, Latin, Mathematics andScience is in ability-based sets. For other subjects teaching isin mixed ability forms.

In the 1st and 2nd years pupils study two of the followingModern Foreign Languages: French, German and Spanish.

Placement and MobilityPlacement into sets or bands is based on ongoingassessment data, internal examination results and on generalprogress. Parents are contacted prior to proposed changes.


MIDDLE SCHOOL – 3RD, 4TH AND 5TH YEARS(School Years 9, 10 and 11) Age 13+ to 15+

StructureMiddle School HousesPupils moving up to the Middle School from the LowerSchool remain in the same day house, with a newHousemaster or Housemistress.

The Head of Middle School oversees the academic andpastoral progress of all the boys and girls, day and boarding.

Pupils joining Pocklington School for the first time areallocated to one of the four day houses (Dolman, Gruggen,Hutton, Wilberforce).

Girl boarders aged 13+ will join Orchard House transferringto Faircote at 15+. Boy boarders aged 13+ will join Dolmantransferring to Fenwick-Smith House at 14+. See staff list onpage 7 for day and boarding staff.

Teaching GroupsSubjects are usually taught in mixed ability classes. Each classis taught for eight periods per week.


CurriculumMost students choose 3 linear A levels throughout lower andUpper Sixth. The linear approach provides greateropportunity for breadth and depth of study in each student'schosen subjects.

Some students may wish to take a fourth A level, or wherepossible, a fourth AS level. Alternatively students can chooseto complete one of a range of enrichment qualifications astheir fourth subject choice.

Students opting to select Further Mathematics should notethat they are required to select two additional A level subjectsto complete their subject options.

This will result in four A levels: Mathematics, FurtherMathematics and two others.

Additional periods are allocated as pastoral time includingassemblies, house time, tutorials and one-to-one interviewslots. Sixth Form students also have a weekly gamesafternoon and, in the Lower Sixth, participate in a weeklyactivity slot in which they can choose from Community Action,CCF or work experience.

Sixth Form OptionsThe timetable is arranged to accommodate as manycombinations of choices as possible. Currently students areinitially given a free choice of subjects.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Pocklington AwardThe Pocklington Award is presented to students who havefully committed themselves to the extra-curricular life ofPocklington School, through involvement in activities suchas sport, drama, music and CCF. It is designed to rewardpupils for their involvement in extra-curricular activities atthe end of each of the three phases of their school life, andis awarded to pupils who have demonstrated themselvesto be responsible young adults capable of workingindependently and managing their time effectively. AllPocklington pupils including those in the Lower andMiddle School are eligible for this Award.

University and Careers AdviceAll students participate in a structured programme ofcareers education in the 3rd Year covering career planningand subject choice.

From the 4th Year upwards each student has a one to onemeeting with the Careers Advisor, and can arrange furthermeetings as required.

Sixth Form students can arrange individual interviews asrequired throughout the two years. The Sixth Form Tutors,House staff and Head of Sixth Form support students inmaking their UCAS applications. Specialist support is alsoprovided for Oxbridge candidates, for students applyingto study medicine, veterinary medicine, or dentistry and tostudents who are planning to take a gap year. The serviceis run by a professional Careers Advisor who is based inour well equipped University and Careers Centre. Studentsalso have access to the Pocklington School FoundationCareers and Business Network via the OP Office and theCareers Advisor.

SIXTH FORM ENRICHMENT QUALIFICATIONSEnrichment QualificationsAll students will have the opportunity to complete a fourthenrichment qualification, in addition to their three A levels.For some this may be a fourth A level or AS; for others, it maybe a choice from the following options. The breadth of theseopportunities will help students to develop key skills, both aslearners and as individuals ready to enter the workplace.

The Extended Project QualificationThis allows students a free choice of subject on which tocomplete a major piece of evaluative research in an area ofpersonal interest. With its emphasis on process, presentationand report, it provides a context for developing independentlearning, critical thinking and long-term planning skills. TheEPQ carries the same weight as half an A level subject and ishighly regarded by universities, including Oxbridge.

Sports Leadership Level 3 QualificationThis is a nationally recognised qualification which preparesstudents to lead groups of children and adults in sport andrecreational activities as well as teaching leadership skills suchas organisation, planning, communication and teamwork.

Home Cooking Skills (BTEC Level 1)This is a single unit BTEC qualification designed by JamieOliver in conjunction with Pearson. It is a hands-on coursethat helps students to develop the knowledge,understanding and confidence they need to cook simple,nutritious meals at home and how to economise whenplanning a meal.

Visits and Open MorningsIndividual visits can be arranged at any time. Families are alsoencouraged to come to an open morning. Seewww.pocklingtonschool.com for up-to-date information onour Open Events which are generally held each term inOctober, March and June.

RegistrationRegistration of a prospective pupil means that the schooladmissions office will, at the appropriate time for each stage,proceed with arrangements for entry. It also means that theschool will stay in touch with your family, sending outinformation about open mornings, entrance exams and otherschool events. Parents can register a son or daughter bycompleting and submitting the registration form enclosedwith this brochure.

AdmissionsAdmissions PolicySubject to the entry criteria given below, we seek to admitcandidates who will benefit from what the school has to offerand whom it will be able to support. Children with mildlearning difficulties can be supported, as can those who willin due course seek entry to the most demanding universitycourses. We uphold a non-discriminatory admissions policy inrespect of disability, gender, race or any factor which isunlawful or unreasonable.

Years of EntryThe most common entry points are at Reception and SchoolYear 3 at Pocklington Prep School and the 1st Year (SchoolYear 7), 3rd Year (School Year 9) or the Sixth Form inPocklington School. Pupils can however be accepted for allschool years, subject to vacancy.

Entry Criteria for Offer of PlacesOffers of places at Pocklington School and at PocklingtonPrep are subject to vacancy and to a satisfactory entry examresult and school report. All pupils will be interviewed as partof the admissions process. Entry Examinations at the variousstages are:

Pocklington Prep SchoolPre-School and Pre-Prep Entry AssessmentsPupils are assessed on an individual basis. Applicants areinvited to join the appropriate class at a convenient time.

Pocklington Prep Entry ExaminationPocklington Prep School Year 2 pupils normally progress toYear 3.

Details are given in the booklet ‘Entrance to Pocklington PrepSchool’ which gives information for all year groups andincludes sample questions. For entry in September 2020 theentry examination will be held on 18th January 2020. Detailsof Pocklington Prep School Scholarships are given in the nextsection.

Pocklington SchoolEntry ExaminationsLower School1st and 2nd Year (School Years 7 and 8)

Pocklington Prep School Year 6 pupils will automaticallyprogress to Year 7, provided there are no concerns about achild’s behaviour or ability, which have been previouslycommunicated to parents. In order to be awarded ascholarship or exhibition, pupils are required to sit theentrance exam. Pupils joining Prep School in Year 6 may alsobe required to sit the entrance exam. Details are given in thebooklet ‘Entry Procedures for the Lower School for September2020’. This is available on request, and is also sent to all thosewho register for Lower School entry. The entranceexamination will be held on 18th January 2020.

Middle School3rd and 4th Year (School Years 9 and 10)

Arrangements for entry into the Middle School are similar tothose into the Lower School. Details are given in the booklet‘Entry Procedures for the Middle School for September 2020’sent to families after registration. The entrance examinationwill be held on 18th January 2020. The scholarshipexamination will be held on 1st February 2020.

Preparatory School CandidatesCandidates joining the Middle School (3rd Year, SchoolYear 9) from preparatory schools either sit Common Entranceor Pocklington School entry/scholarship examinations on thedates given in the section above entitled Middle School.Advice about examinations is available from the school orfrom the head of your preparatory school.

Sixth FormThere is no separate entry examination for the Sixth Form.Internal candidates must achieve the required GCSE gradesto progress into the Sixth Form. Means tested bursariesand scholarships are available (See page 12).

Year 9 Pocklington School (3rd Year entry) entry examination or Common Entrance

Year 12 GCSE grades to include a (Sixth Form) minimum of 4 grade 6, and 2 grade 4.


Fees 2019 – 2020

FeesFees are averaged over the entire course of learning atPocklington Prep and Pocklington Schools. Fees arecalculated with reference to the expected pupil cost over thewhole academic year: costs are fixed for that year whether ornot a pupil is present or on leave preparing for GCSE, or A level examinations. Fees are charged termly in advance inthree equal instalments. A rebate is made for meals not takenby day pupils during exam leave. GCSE and A level studentsdo not return to school after their last examination – we feelthey have earned the reward of a good rest – but they can doso if they wish to participate in sport and other schoolactivities. Pupils may also attend to use study facilities duringperiods of exam leave: staff are available to help with exampreparation with individual advice or by means of tutorialsand revision sessions.

Governors reserve the right to alter the amount of any fee orcharge with one term’s notice. A full term’s notice must begiven, in writing, before the withdrawal of a pupil or a changeof status from boarding to day. In default of such notice oneterm’s fees are chargeable.Payment of FeesTerms applying to payment of fees are given in theparent/school agreement. The following should however benoted:All fees are charged termly in advance and accounts arepayable on or before the first day of term. Optional extras arecharged to the account for the term following thatin which the charges are incurred.Parents can elect to use the Pocklington Monthly PaymentPlan to pay by direct debit. The fees for the year includingoptional extras can be paid in 10 monthly instalments.Payments begin in the July before the start of the AcademicYear in question and those wishing to use this service shouldcontact the Bursar before that date.Fees can also be paid monthly by direct debit via third partyproviders including School Fee Plan and Close Brothers. Thisenables the Foundation to collect the full fee at the beginningof term and parents pay the provider via a monthly directdebit. A service charge is made by the companies and there isno long term commitment to the scheme.It may be possible to arrange for lump sum payments to meetfees over periods in excess of 6 terms.Further details of any of these methods of payment areavailable from the Deputy Bursar.

Fee Discounts (including Sibling and Forces)Sibling discounts are offered to families with threeor more children concurrently attending Pocklingtonand Pocklington Prep schools. The annual discount rates are:

10% reduction for the third child

12.5% reduction for the fourth child

20% reduction for the fifth child

Discounts are only available to parent(s) with full financialresponsibility for the children. Discounts cannot becombined except in cases where academic awards have beenmade.

Forces DiscountA 10% discount is offered to boarding pupils whose parentsare members of the Armed Forces. Pocklington School is asenior school from the age of 11 for the purposes of CEA.Further details are available from the Bursar and from unitadministrative offices.

Optional Extras and Additional ChargesSome items are provided at additional cost: these includeMusic Tuition; fees for extra tuition; bus charges; OldPocklingtonian Association subscription; House charges;clothing and equipment; some educational visits;photographs and other items ordered by parents or pupils.

Boarding for day pupils £70 per night


Boarding FeesBoarding fees for pupils up to age 13 include all weekendoutings and activities as these are compulsory for all juniorboarders. Boarders from senior houses (Faircote House andFenwick-Smith House) can choose whether or not toparticipate in an outing or activity away from school and arecharged extra for these trips.Occasional Boarding for day pupils is subject to availabilty ofbeds in the appropriate boarding house. Stays must beagreed and booked in advance with the relevantHousemaster or Housemistress. Fees for this service will bebilled at the end of the term in which the stay occurs.

Boarding CategoriesFull BoardingPupils live in school for 7 days a week during term time. Onlygoing home or to guardians for holidays and other specialoccasions. Pupils may choose to go home (or to a guardian)or stay at school at Exeat weekends.

5-Night (Weekly) BoardingPupils live in school Monday to Friday going home atweekends after Saturday games for Pocklington Schoolpupils or after school on Fridays for Pocklington Prep pupils.Boarders may return either on Sunday night (by arrangementwith the Housemaster/Mistress) or Monday morning. Full andweekly boarders have preference over casual boardingapplicants.

Flexible BoardersPupils elect to regularly spend the same 2 to 4 weekdaynights as boarders. This option is subject to availability ofbeds in the appropriate boarding house.

Casual BoardersPupils board on an occasional/ad-hoc basis at a frequencybelow that of a Flexible Boarder not necessarily on the sameweekday nights each time. This option is subject toavailability of bedspace in the appropriate house.

Extended Day Boarding for Day PupilsThis allows pupils to stay beyond 5.45 pm and can bearranged on a flexible or casual basis.Pupils are assigned to the age appropriate boarding houseand may join boarders for breakfast before school starts andalso join boarders for meals, study and boarding activitiesbefore going home by 8 pm. Casual options of between 2and 4 nights per week are also available for Extended DayBoarders.

English as an Additional LanguageEnglish lessons are available to pupils whose first language isnot English. The frequency of lessons depends on thefluency of the student. The termly cost ranges from £255 fora weekly lesson to £1,006 for 5 lessons per week. Chargesare added to the end of term bill.

Old Pocklingtonian Association Lifetime MembershipThe Old Pocklingtonian Association was established over100 years ago for former pupils, and has traditionallyprovided a link to the school once pupils have left throughregular sporting and social events as well as offering careerand mentoring support for current and former pupils.Membership is open to all former pupils of PocklingtonSchool. Lifetime membership is currently £390. This is paidvia the school bill in equal termly instalments from Y7 untilthe end of Y11 or over two years in the Sixth form for thosepupils who enter the school for the Sixth Form.Further details about the Association and membershipbenefits are available from Mrs Rachel Dare, OP LiaisonOfficer. Supporting Families Beyond the Normal School DayPocklington Prep School After School CareParents of Pocklington Prep School pupils who would liketheir children to stay in school after normal closing time canmake use of the After School Care facility either on a regularbasis or on a drop in basis. There are separate supervisedsessions for Prep and Pre-prep pupils. After School Care atPocklington Prep starts at 4.00 pm and ends at 5.45 pm.After School Care is charged at £2.85 per half hour.

Lower School Prep RoomThis provides a supervised quiet room for Lower Schoolpupils until 5.00 pm. Attendance is compulsory for all lowerschool pupils who cannot be collected at 3.45 pm and whoare not participating in after school activities. Pupils whoneed to stay later can work in the library provided parentsregister with the Librarian, Mrs Edwards in advance.

Middle School and Sixth FormMiddle School pupils (ages 13+ to 15+) and Sixth Formpupils who cannot be collected at 5.00 pm must report tothe library. Parents must register in advance with the Librarian, Mrs Edwards.


Scholarships and exhibitionsFurther Notes on Awards for Pocklington SchoolDolman Awards for Lower SchoolDolman awards are open to all pupils entering the 1st Year(School Year 7) in September 2020. Awards will be made tothe best performing pupils in the entrance examination.

Gruggen Awards for Middle SchoolGruggen awards are open to pupils entering the 3rd Year(School Year 9) in September 2020. Awards will be made tothe best performing pupils in the 13+ scholarshipexamination.

Hutton Awards for Sixth FormHutton awards are offered to high performing GCSEcandidates, both external and internal. Normally awards aremade to those achieving in the region of 8 A* or 8 grade 8 to9 and above.

Awards HeldPupils may not hold more than one Dolman, Gruggen orHutton Award at any one time. It is, however, possible forholders of exhibitions to advance to become a scholar at asubsequent award (e.g. a Dolman exhibitioner would notbecome a Gruggen exhibitioner but could become aGruggen scholar).

Sixth Form BursariesA limited number of Sixth Form Bursaries, worth up to 100%of the day fee, are available to Sixth Form applicants forSeptember 2020. Bursary applications must be madeby the end of February 2020 and bursaries will be awarded onmerit as a result of examination, recital, performance or trial inMarch 2020 and after assessment of the means of parents orguardians. The candidate must also achieve the GCSE gradesrequired for Sixth Form entry i.e. a minimum of 4 grade 6,and 2 grade 4. Full details are available from the Bursar.

Bursarial AssistanceIf funding is available after supporting the Sixth formbursary scheme, bursaries are available on a means-testedbasis and are primarily intended to support scholars andexhibitioners who would not otherwise be able to attend theschools.It may be possible to provide support to current pupils whenfinancial circumstances change at an important stage of thepupil’s school career. It is also possible for parents toapproach external trusts for additional support.

Academic AwardsAcademic scholarships and exhibitions are offered tocandidates for Pocklington Prep and to candidates for the1st Year, 3rd Year and Sixth Form of Pocklington School.Awards are available to both internal and externalcandidates. The aim of the awards is to recognise andpromote academic excellence.

TenurePocklington School awards are tenable for the duration of thepupil’s time at Pocklington. Pocklington Prep awards aretenable for the pupil’s time at Pocklington Prep. Tenure of allawards is subject to continued satisfactory performance andbehaviour.
