IDM Roadmap:Background

• The Executive User Committee (UserCom) initiated develop of an IDM Roadmap

– Steen Sunesen, NO and Jan Karlshøj, DK made the initial draft which was presented for UserCom in New York, December 2010

– UserCom ask IUG for adoption of the Roadmap• Purpose of the Roadmap

– Identify the most important exchange scenarios during a lifecycle of a facility that should be support by IDMs

– Prioritise which IDMs that should be developed first– Stimulate development and implementation of the top prioritised IDMs– Attract sponsors to financially support the development of the top prioritised

IDMs• Content of the Roadmap

– Only identify overall exchange scenarios– Identified top prioritised IDMs– Indicate if development of the identified IDMs have started or not


IDM Roadmap:Preconditions and methodology

• Prerequisites– Use ISO 22263:2008 *

• Mapped to OmniClass table 31– Define a list of Services

• Services mapped to OmniClass table 32* ISO 22263:2008 specifies a framework for the organization of project information (process-related as well as product-related) in construction projects. Its purpose is to facilitate control, exchange, retrieval and use of relevant information about the project and the construction entity. It is intended for all agents in the project organization in management of the construction process as a whole and in coordination of its sub-processes and activities.

• Layout methodology– Roadmap as a Matrix

• Stages; Pre-lifecycle, Pre-Construction, Construction, Post-construction• Services• There has been identified individual IDMs for each stage/phase.• First and second level of top prioritized IDMs have been identified and in

which areas development already has started • (Parties are not included yet)

IDM Roadmap:Prioritised IDMs

• The main purpose of an Information Delivery Manual is to certify that the relevant data is communicated in such a way that the software at the receiving end can interpret it. It is important point out that in order to make an Information Delivery Manual functional, it has to be supported by software.

• By identifying and focusing on top prioritized IDMs the aim is to gain momentum and profit on already existing results. Several areas have been identified as crucial for the industry as shown in the tables.

• The top prioritized IDMs are subdivided into a primary and secondary group as shown in the following tables.

IDM Roadmap:Existing IDMs

• Current Capabilities– A number of IDM projects were started simultaneously as the methodology was

developed.– Several of the IDM project have lead to specifications that have been tested in

real construction projects or competitions. The concept is today explored and collaborative efforts are being made in order to make IDMs that can be used.

– Despite the progress it is conclusive that it is a challenge to make IDMs in some areas, because there is a lack of structured and well-documented processes. In such cases, it is necessary to agree on the processes and the relevant activities and exchange requirements. In some cases it is necessary to have the IDM development work followed by a software development phase.

– This means that if the software development is nonexistent it will not be possible to get the expected results. It is therefore crucial to make sure that the initiator behind an IDM has a clear strategy on how to get the IDM implemented in software solutions.

IDM Roadmap:Summary

• The IDM development process– Has the objective of understanding business requirements for information

exchange and/or sharing and developing an object model and software implementations that can be used by practitioners within the industry to satisfy those requirements. It is a process that results in a number of components whose interaction is examined in the IDM Technical Architecture section

• The prioritized IDMs– Are characterized by their support of exchange scenarios that frequently occur

and aims at both to ease the job for the involved parties as well as increase the quality of the end product.

• buildingSMART is looking for organizations and sponsors– That whish to participate in developing the prioritized IDMs. By their participation

they will be able to influence the outcome, include their company’s, national or regional requirements into the process in order to make the final result applicable for their own needs.


• A single page document have been produced to encourage organizations to take active part in or sponsor the development of top prioritised Information Delivery Manuals.
