¶ 7
DO a pre-shift inspection
¶ 8
If the fuel system leaks FIX IT
¶ 9
Drive at a safe, reasonable speed. Follow traffic regulations. When following
another lift, use the 3-second rule.
¶ 10
Do not pass at dangerous locations.
¶ 11
Drivers shall slow down and sound their horns where visibility is obstructed.
If you cannot see forward, drive backwards.
¶ 12 Look in the direction of travel, do not move unless it is clear.
¶ 13 Make sure no one is between the forklift and a fixed object where they could be crushed

¶ 14
On grades over 10% loaded trucks should drive with the load uphill, the load low
and tilted back.
¶ 15
Forks shall be kept low, consistent with safe operations.
¶ 16
An unattended forklift is one that is 25 feet away or out of sight of the driver.
You will need to lower the forks to the ground, set the brake, controls in neutral and
turn off the power.
¶ 17
On an attended forklift, when the driver is off the machine, you need to lower the
forks, set the brakes, and put the control in neutral.
42” EXCEPTION:
forks can be up to 42” high for loading and unloading by hand BUT the power must
be turned off.

¶ 20
Drive only on sufaces that will support the forklift.
¶ 21-22
Loading dock guidelines:
Check the trailer floor
Block the trailer wheels
Secure the dock plate
Place jacks under the front of the trailer if needed
¶ 24
Keep away from the edge of an elevated docks, platform, etc. the width of one tire.
¶ 26
Stay within the truck’s load capacity.
¶ 27
Do not move until the load is secure.

¶ 28
Care should be taken when tilting a load. Do not tilt raised forks except when
picking up a load. Elevated loads shall not be tilted forward except when over the
deposit site.
¶ 30
Know how to use different attachments
¶ 32
If two or more forklifts are lifting the same load stay within their combined load
capacity.
In addition to the Cal-OSHA regulations you need to check with your supervisor
to see if they have any forklift policies that you need to follow.

• The first step to operating a forklift safely is the pre-operational inspection. The purpose
of this inspection is to ensure the proper operation of the vehicle.
• The pre-operational inspection must be done at least once a day. If the truck is used
continuously, it should be inspected after each shift.
• The inspection should test the function of the steering, operation of the controls and the
forward and backward braking functions.
• Tire condition and tread, seatbelt condition and the condition of fork pins or other
attachments that may be worn or broken should also be checked.
•• Any defect found in these critical systems, including a missing ID plate, requires the truck
to be tagged out of service.
Be sure to remove the key and report the defect immediately.
• Failing to conduct a complete inspection leaves the vehicle susceptible to a serious
malfunction.
