• DEWS has ongoing collaborations with multinational companies such as Selex ES (a Finmeccanica Company), Thales Communications, Thales Alenia Space, Lfoundry, Terna, Telecom Italia, etc.
• DEWS has been very active in preparing a successful proposal for the foundation of the Innovation District “Polo ICT Abruzzo”. ICT Abruzzo includes about 50 companies (among those LFoundry, Selex ES, Fastweb, Intecs and several SMEs), University of L'Aquila and other research centers (e.g. Radiolabs and CNIT).
• As enabling and complementary efforts for promoting innovation and technology transfer, the Center of Excellence DEWS has joined new initiatives targeted to support the creation of high-tech start-ups (see RICOSTRUIRE and SMILING projects).
A3: Advanced monitoring and control
4
A3 investigates the following application areas: • Environmental monitoring and control
• Home automation
• Structural health monitoring
• Homeland security
• Support to education and art
• Intelligent Transport Systems

6
Home automation – Smiling (RIDITT)
• National project, funded by the Ministry of Economic Development in 2012, aiming at innovating the home automation context, entitled SMILING (SMart In home LIviNG: Innovative technologies for sensing and automation in Home Automation).
• Introducing new elements in the context of home automation through a wise insertion of wireless components.
• The project aims at creating a "laboratory" for the transfer from research to the industries involved in developing technologies of advanced automation and sensors, in the field of home automation.
• These technologies allow the development of innovative products and the delivering of new services to improve housing quality and energy efficiency.

Home automation – Smiling (RIDITT)
• The laboratory consists of three operating units distributed in south-central Italy.
• The coordinator is in the Marche Region (Fabriano, AN), while other places involved are located in Abruzzo (L'Aquila) and in Campania (Napoli) Regions.
• The two involved universities, Università Politecnica delle Marche (as leader) and Università degli Studi dell'Aquila (DEWS), provide their expertise and research in order to upgrade the product offerings of many SMEs in those territories that are currently operating in the fields of mechanics, electronics, mechatronics, information technology, furniture and systems for energy production and management.

Structural Health Monitoring – rICosTruire (RIDITT)
• One of the project aims is the acivation of a laboratory on
Structural Health Monitoring techniques and methodologies. • The lab offers serivices to public and private operators
aiming at guaranteeing pro-actively seismic security in a Smart City context.

Support to education and arts
• The contamination between scientific knowledge and artistic
components is too often limited to chance, mainly stemming from the convergence on the same research group of technical and
artistic interests.
• In this scenario, one of the main interests has been the integration
of wireless communications and audio waves.
• Moreover, the use of technology as an effective support for
learning has been explored.

Support to education and art RF Sounding • RF Sounding is an open space installation that comprises both
artistic and technological innovations: its aim is to provide the user, while entering a specifically defined area, with awareness of radio frequency signals (e.g. the cellular networks radio signals).
• Radio signals are shifted, with proper elaboration, to the audible band and the result is spread all over the specific area through a certain number of loudspeakers.
• The aim of this project is twofold, from one side we want to increase end users awareness of the strength of the electromagnetic fields actually present in the frequency spectrum, on the other hand we want to provide for an artistic and interactive installation that can also be remotely joined through a web interface.

• Infotainment – Multimedia contents available on the bus trough mobile devices such as
smartphones and tablet • Sensing & Tracking
– WSN able to collect environment data according to variable configurations managed by system administrator
– GPS Tracking of public transportation – Automatic people counting on buses – RFID Tracking of pupils going in and out of the school to ensure their safety
• Data collection & Elaboration – Design and deploy all the software needed to collect, store and manage
data. • Communication & and interaction of systems

• Some of the proposed solutions are now part of the daily living of 12 persons affected by Down syndrome.
• Some families requested to export this solutions at home.
• The technological and educational model is going to be extended to Rome in order to stress the proposed solution in a challenging urban scenario.
• The Italian Vodafone Foundation is evaluating the re-funding of the project.
