Introduction
to
Integrated Mathematics, Books 1–3 © 2002
The Integrated Mathematics series provides students with an excellent preparation forcollege studies and for future careers. The mathematical development builds a strongfoundation for more advanced courses such as Precalculus and Calculus.
Over a three-year period, Integrated Mathematics teaches the same mathematical topics as acontemporary Algebra 1/Geometry/Algebra 2 sequence. The content is organized so thatalgebra and geometry are taught in each of the three levels. In addition, topics from logicalreasoning, measurement, probability, statistics, discrete mathematics, and functions areinterwoven throughout each level.
The algebra topics in Integrated Mathematics, Book 1 include expressions, equations, inequalities, and systems of equations. Students solve and graph linear and quadraticequations. Students use examples from geometry in their study of algebraic topics, andvice versa. Topics from geometry that are introduced include coordinate geometry, transformations, similarity, area, solid geometry, and the trigonometric ratios sine, cosine, and tangent. Students use inductive reasoning to investigate patterns and createmathematical models for real-world situations. Students also study experimental, theoretical, and geometric probability, and statistical measures and graphs.
Integrated Mathematics, Book 2 has a strong geometry and logical reasoning strand. Thisstrand includes such topics as inductive versus deductive reasoning, coordinate geometry intwo-and three-dimensions, implications, arguments, and postulates in algebra. Studentswrite two-column proofs, paragraph proofs, and flow proofs about similar and congruenttriangles. New algebra topics include indirect variation, complex numbers, the binomialtheorem, and rational and cubic equations. Students continue to study linear and quadraticmodels. Matrices are introduced and used to represent transformations and systems ofequations. Other topics include special right triangles, counting techniques, probability andodds, Pascal’s triangle, and binomial experiments.
An emphasis is placed on functions in Integrated Mathematics, Book 3. The types offunctions discussed include radical, piecewise, exponential, logarithmic, inverse, andtrigonometric functions. Students also study sequences and series. The geometry topicsare an extension of the topics covered previously. An emphasis is placed on the geometryof circles. Also studied are indirect proofs, polar coordinates, vectors, and parametricequations. The probability and statistics topics include standard deviation, normaldistributions, linear and quadratic regression, conditional probability, and expected value.Topics from discrete mathematics include algorithms, finite graphs, and linearprogramming.
