• The ‘green revolution’ of agricultural and medical advances has lead to a massive population boom in India.

• Large youthful population of reproductive age.• People are beginning to live longer due to

increases in medicine and care. This means there is a lower death rate.

• One of the main reasons there is an uncharacteristically low birth rate and population growth in Kerala is government policies.

• Government policies of showing the benefits of few children have had an effect upon the mentality towards having children.

• Large proportion of country are Hindi, many Hindus believe it is their dharma (duty) to reproduce. This will mean people are pressured through religion to have children.

• In Kerala there is a high literacy rate (94%) meaning people are educated enough to get higher paid jobs and not rely on their children to support them.

• Emancipation and education of women has had a massive effect where women are beginning to look at careers for themselves rather than just being a mother and housewife.

• Every year 900,000 Indians die of lack of clean water and breathing polluted air. This will affect the death rate and the natural increase.

for a few rather than a poor one for many.
