INDEPENDENT LIVING FEBRUARY 20184

In January the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin (ADRC-CW) said goodbye and good luck to a retiring resource specialist. After more than 30 years of service to older adults and the disabled, Denise Tritz took some time to reflect on her service.

A few years back in college, Denise Tritz took on a task to help someone stay in school. A student from New York came to Arizona for school but needed an aide to stay. This student with Muscular Dystrophy enrolled in school hoping she and her mother could find a live-in aide before her mother had to return to New York. Denise had previously worked at a camp that catered to youth with disabilities so the arrangement was a good fit.

Denise left Arizona and came to Central Wisconsin. She trained in a CNA class at Edgewater Haven Nursing Home. This class was a one-time event where only five people were hired and trained to work in the nursing home. Denise worked several years for the nursing home and enjoyed the company of the residents. She says older people are more interesting, “they have the best stories.”

After several years in the nursing home, Denise served Wood County in the aging department as a benefit specialist. She continued serving the community when Wood and Marathon Counties merged to form the ADRC-CW. At this time, she made the move from benefit specialist to resource specialist serving older adults and adults with disabilities.

With the ADRC-CW, Denise served older adults in a new way and long-term care took on a new look. Denise’s experience in the nursing home gave her one view of how care is provided; the ADRC-CW options counseling shows care being provided in a

number of ways. When asked, “What sorts of trends did you see?” Denise said, “Your choice was home or nursing home 35 years ago.” Older adults have more choices now as to how they choose to live.

Denise reflected on the feisty individuals who just want to maintain independence. Change is difficult for everyone. Denise wishes people would come to the ADRC-CW sooner rather than later. Her experience with clients who agree to a little bit of help and to change just a small thing to stay independent have expressed appreciation. Some clients even comment that the change was so helpful, it could have been made sooner.

The ADRC-CW will miss the compassion Denise brought to the office each day and her dedication to the clients. She enjoyed meeting with people and talking about plans and options for long-term care. Denise believes she “learned more from them than they ever learned from me.”

It is only February and Cindy, a D.C. Everest student, has plans for after graduation. Her Teacher/Case Manager referred her to the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central WI (ADRC-CW). A resource specialist at the ADRC-CW provided Cindy and her family information and explained the options she could choose from for life after high school. Cindy, like all graduating seniors, can choose between traditional colleges, technical or trade schools, or entering the workforce. Cindy has siblings who went on to college after they graduated and she really wanted to do that too.

The resource specialist provided Cindy with information on the Stepping Stones Transition Education Program (SSTeP), which focuses on preparing young adults with disabilities for life after high school graduation. It is important to find the right post-secondary option with the right supports in place for students with disabilities.

Several four year colleges in the area have programs to support students with disabilities: Bethel University has Inclusive Learning and Development, Edgewood College has Cutting-Edge, and UW-Oshkosh has Project Success to name just a few. The two year UW Marathon and Wood County colleges have the Solution Center to provide students with support. Even the technical schools have programs and supports in place to assist in the success of students with disabilities. Midstate and Northcentral Technical Colleges have disability services and Nicolet has the Jump! Start program. Some of these college programs specialize in assisting individuals with dyslexia, autism, and cognitive disabilities.

Some students choose to work after graduation. Cindy and her family were also given information to help her decide if working would be the next step

for her. The WI Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) provides information and services to help students with disabilities find employment. After meeting with a resource specialist and hearing about all the options available, Cindy and her family decided on the Blackwell Job Corps: Career Technical Training program.

Cindy and her mother attended a local presentation about Blackwell Job Corps Center in Laona, Wisconsin. Cindy toured the campus with her mother and was very interested in the CNA program. Cindy completed the tour and submitted her application. She was accepted and is looking forward to her future and new experiences! Cindy will live in the dorms and Blackwell will provide individual attention and support to Cindy as needed for her success.

If you or someone you know is interested in exploring the options available to students with disabilities after high school, either currently in high school or already graduated, contact the ADRC-CW: 888-486-9545. There are offices with resource specialists to help you in Antigo, Marshfield, Merrill, Wausau, and Wisconsin Rapids.

INDEPENDENT LIVING FEBRUARY 20186

What do you think of when you hear the word Caregiver? Many think of the person who provides hands on daily care for a frail adult, usually involving help with dressing, feeding, bathing, and mobility. While this person certainly is a caregiver; I’d like to challenge you to think about other possibilities of what caregiving might be. What about the middle-aged son who stops for groceries on the way home from work for his mother? The daughter who schedules and takes her dad to his many doctor appointments? The husband in charge of cooking and cleaning since his wife is no longer able? The woman who must take her husband with her to her hair appointment for fear his confusion would endanger him if left home alone?

To sum it up, you don’t have to be providing 24/7 care to be considered a caregiver. Anyone who helps someone with something he/she used to do by him/herself is considered a caregiver. Let me give you a few examples:

• If you feel it is necessary to regularly check on your elderly neighbor and help with little jobs, then you are a caregiver. Without your help, your neighbor may not be able to live independently.

• When you find yourself spending time making appointments for your mother and stopping at the pharmacy or grocery store for her amidst running your own errands, you are caregiving.

• If you have stopped going to your weekly card club because you don’t feel you can leave your spouse at home alone, you are a caregiver.

• When you spend time making phone calls to help your sister find an assisted living facility or to set up home care services, you are a caregiver.

Caregiving is often a role you do not anticipate and one that brings new challenges and responsibilities to your life. Recognizing yourself as a caregiver is an important first step to handling the extra stress you may be feeling. Attending a caregiver support group, reading information on caregiver health or talking to a trusted friend or professional about your situation are all good ways to help cope with stress and gain support in this role.

Identifying yourself as a caregiver also helps you connect with community resources that can assist you. Getting help from a home care agency, adult day care, home delivered meals, or volunteer drivers are some of the ways to reduce your stress as a caregiver. Information about these services is available at the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin.

Finally, defining yourself as a caregiver helps you take your role more seriously and to look for even more ways to assist the person you care for and possibly, involve more people to help! Sharing duties with other family members, friends or neighbors will take some of the responsibility off of you and will be positive for the person receiving help too.

No matter what your caregiving looks like, the assistance you provide is vitally important to the life of the person you are helping. It is often the difference between the person living in his/her own home and living in a care facility. If you are a caregiver, call the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin at 1-888-486-9545 and see how we can help!

Bill and Nancy, both in their early eighties, live in the little ranch style home that was purchased when their children were in elementary school. The neighborhood has changed slightly over the years, which is to be expected. A nice mixture of older and younger families, which Bill and Nancy both enjoy. They love their neighborhood! They appreciate the lasting relationships they have developed over the years; they also relish the energy the young families bring to the area.

Tim, Bill and Nancy’s son lives with his wife, Heather and two children in a home not far from Bill and Nancy. Over the years, Tim has noticed a slight change in his parents. Mom is starting to have a difficult time cooking and cleaning like she used to. Cooking was always a forte of Nancy’s. She was a fabulous cook and loved to host parties over the holidays. Now, as much as mom loves to cook, it’s become difficult for her to stand for long periods of time in the kitchen. Tim often wonders if his mom and dad are always eating a well-balanced meal during the day and will occasionally bring them something to eat over the dinner hour.

Tim has also found that yard work has become more and more of a challenge for his parents. Bill and Nancy were avid gardeners, who maintained beds of beautiful flowers that bloom throughout the year. Planting, mulching and grass cutting have become much too difficult, so Tim has been helping to mow and maintain the yard as much as possible.

Nancy also struggles with laundry, as the laundry room is located on the basement level of the home. Nancy has felt her balance change over the years and fears falling with a heavy load of laundry in her arms. Tim’s wife, Heather has been a wonderful help to Nancy and Bill. Once a week Heather throws in a load of laundry, folds it and helps Nancy put it away.

Bill and Nancy are both active and independent people and would love the opportunity to stay in their quaint little neighborhood, where they can continue to sit on the front porch and visit with neighbors and friends during the warm summer months. Tim and Heather equally enjoy having Tim’s parents so close by and enjoy helping out as much as they can. Bill and Nancy know that they could use a little extra help with cooking, cleaning, yard work, and laundry. Tim and Heather also realize that with a busy family of their own, getting some extra support for Bill and Nancy would be helpful for everyone!

NOW--- Where do they begin? What options are out there for Bill and Nancy to stay in their home? What if they don’t’ have the funds to privately pay for services long term? What are their options?

The good news is The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin can help Bill and Nancy identify what options are available so they can continue to stay in their home for many years to come.

Whether you are an individual, a concerned family member, a friend, or a professional working with the aging or disabled, we can connect you to the support you need. Please contact us at 1-888-486-9545 for more information or visit our website: www.adrc-cw.org to find out more about Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin.

OLDER, WISER, WORKINGAs a senior seeking employment we can cover our gray hair, but not our wrinkles. How great would it be to change the image of the term ‘senior’ instead of just our hair color? Employers should recognize that today’s older workers are different from those in the past. Seniors today operate computers, smart phones and go to the gym. According to the U. S. Department of Labor our country’s population of those 55+ is expected to hit 97.8 million by 2020. They will make up 28.7 percent of our nation’s population. Imagine almost one third of our nation will be 55 years of age or older.

We are fortunate that in our area of the state there is a national employment program serving lower income seniors. It is called the “Senior Community Service Employment Program” (SCSEP) and offers a hands-on approach to updating or learning new skills. It is funded by the U.S. Dept. of Labor and sponsored nationally by Senior Service America. Since 1977, Curative Connections, Inc. has been the local sponsor for northcentral Wisconsin. Participants must be at least 55 years old, unemployed, and have

a family income of no more than 125 percent (125%) of the federal poverty level. Participants work an average of 20 hours a week, and are paid minimum wage through the program. Workers compensation is also provided through SCSEP. Worksites provide a wide variety of community service activities at non-profit or government facilities, including day-care centers, senior centers, pantries, thrift stores, social service programs and government offices. In Wausau, these include the ADRC-CW, Marathon County Health Department, the Neighbors’ Place, DMV, Goodwill, Forest Park Village, and North Central Health Care.

In Marathon and Lincoln counties, the SCSEP is known as STEP: Senior Training and Employment Program and is based in Green Bay. The service area includes 14 counties. After age 55 there is less of an interest in long term education/ training and sometimes taking a few courses isn’t enough to entice an employer into giving seniors a chance. This program can give seniors that hands-on experience and current references that will spark the interest of area employers. The community service training serves as a bridge to unsubsidized employment opportunities; SCSEP’s goal is to place 30 percent of its authorized positions into unsubsidized employment annually. For information about the program call 920-593-3557 or email Project Director Deborah Buckley at [email protected]

NUTRITIONADRC-CW NUTRITION SURVEY RESULTS:CONGREGATE DINING POTENTIAL

The ADRC-CW is always looking for ways to serve our customers better and make responsible choices with our resources. We reached out to our communities to gain insight on how we can serve people better with our nutrition program.

The ADRC-CW nutrition program’s purpose is to reduce hunger and food insecurity, promote socialization, and promote health and well-being through nutrition. We surveyed participants and non-participants region wide and received a total of 596 responses. Because we want to focus on drawing more participants to our program, we are focusing on the 280 (47%) responses received from non-participants.

The nutrition program is available to individuals who are at least 60 years old. Of those surveyed, a majority of the individuals not participating in the dining program are under the age of 80 (Figure 1). This speaks to the competition for a customer base that is more active than it has been in previous generations. If the ADRC-CW is to attract these customers we will need to recognize these customers have far more options available to them.

The ADRC-CW has 12 congregate dining sites across the region. In eight of these dining sites lunch is served five days a week. Many of the non-participants were not interested in a five day a week option. More than half preferred only a few days a week (Figure 2).

The ADRC-CW has five dining sites located in senior living apartments. This is convenient for the residents of the apartment building but may not serve the community as effectively. Many of the non-participants would prefer a location in the community. Meals provided in a local diner is preferred by more than 25 percent (Figure 3).

Thank you to all those who participated in our nutrition program survey. Your insight helps the ADRC-CW to ensure resources are being used to provide the services needed and used in the communities we serve. The ADRC-CW will use the information gathered from this survey to find a dining site option that will encourage non-participating members of the community to try our offerings.

THE NEW RETIREMENT AND SECRETS OF THE HAPPIEST RETIREES

Most retirement planning focuses only on the financial aspect which is very important, but there is more to consider in having the fulfilling retirement

you may have envisioned. For most people, the transition from work to retirement is one of the most significant and sometimes even difficult transitions in their lives. To help people get their “non-financial portfolio” in order, United Way Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is offering a free program in which we take a look at some important areas in retirement planning that are often overlooked. United Way RSVP invites you to join us on Thursday, February 8 from 9:30 –11:30 a.m. at the United Way for this helpful program. Whether you’re still working, planning to retire, recently retired or have been retired for years, this program has something of value for you. It will provide you with many useful and practical ideas to help you create the retirement you had envisioned. This is part of the Retirement Well-Being series presented by United Way RSVP, a 55+ volunteer service providing personalized placement and support to persons interested in volunteering.
