About the ECSWWe are part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA),and part of the East Central Synod of WI which consists of 85,000 Lutherans in 125 congregations.

Leadership:The Synod is led by Bishop who oversees the ministry of the pastors and the congregations. The Bishop carries out the work of the Synod along with the Synod Council, Synod staff and the committees of the Synod. Together they seek to help congregations discern what God is up to in their context and communities.

Territory: The Synod is divided into six conferences: Appleton, Green Bay, Oshkosh, Shawano, Tomorrow River, and Wisconsin River Valley. These conferences are made up of 20 Counties in East Central Wisconsin which are: Door, Kewaunee, Brown, Manitowoc, Fond du Lac, Calumet, Winnebago, Outagamie, Shawano, Oconto, Menominee, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Wood, Portage, Waupaca, Waushara, Marquette and Green Lake.

Stewardship: 50% of our annual budget is given to support mission around the world through the work of the ELCA. An additional 8% of our budget fuels mission partnerships such as seminaries, Wisconsin Council of Churches, and Young Adult Ministries. The ECSW is one of the top contributors among all the synods to the World Hunger program of the ELCA. Our synod is diverse, rich in tradition, and growing in faith. Our people give boldly to help those who are in need across the world.

Join Bishop Mansholt on a trip to the Holy Land!March 23-31 2020

Join Bishop Gerald Mansholt - and your fellow ECSW Lutherans - for a special synodical group pilgrimage to the Holy Land! Planned stops include Nazareth, Capernaum, the Sea of Galilee, Jordan River Baptismal Site, Dome of the Rock, Western Wall, Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Mount of Olives, and Bethlehem with optional homestay, and more. We’ll also break bread with local religious and community leaders, peace-builders, and community members, including from partner ministries of the Evangelical Church in Jordan and the Holy Land and Lutheran World Federation. And for three days, we’ll experience MEJDI’s UN award winning Dual Narrative touring program, with Israeli and Palestinian guide in dialogue on contested issues and sites. More information can be found on ecsw.org website.

WELCA Fall RetreatSeptember 20 - September 21

September 20-21 at Imago Dei Village. Kay Zastrow will speak on the Power of Unity and Mary Jo Mettler will give an update on the Current for Curran Hospital in Liberia Project. Contact Carol Cleveland ([email protected]) for more information.

Dear Partners in Ministry,

Please be advised that the Eastern Lay School will not be offering classes during the 2019-2020 academic year. This decision was difficult and was made only after consulting with the Bishop and Synod staff.

Over the past several years the number of students enrolling has continued to decline, despite having made adjustments to the program. In each of the past two years, there have only been 4 new students.

During the coming year, alumni from the program (who have been acting as the Coordinating Team) along with Synod staff (and hopefully some interested pastors), will consult with stakeholders throughout the synod and other lay ministry programs in order to re-tool our Lay School to better meet the needs of individuals, pastors and congregations.

The Central Lay School, which holds classes in Wausau, will continue to meet and anyone in the ECSW is welcome to participate.

The Central Lay School of Ministry meets at Saint Andrew Lutheran Church in Wausau (3200 North Mountain Rd, Wausau, WI 54401) It is a ministry of the East Central Synod of Wisconsin.

You can find information about that program on the Synod website.

Please remember both Lay School programs in your prayers. Sincerely,

The Eastern Lay School Coordinating Team

Did you or your child attend summer camp or Confirmation Camp?

If so, you can remember what a great time you had and what a wonderful experience it can be for most individuals. Please read the flyer from Crossways located at the Connection Desk regarding the shortage of leadership in the ELCA and how congregations are looking for a partner in ministry - like Crossways. Crossways can provide faith formation opportunities that many congregations cannot offer. If you have any questions please speak with our member Kathy Stockhaus, Calvary’s Crossways representative.

Woodchucks Game 2019Calvary had 19 people attend the Woodchucks Game on Sunday, June 23. What a fun event! The first few innings were a little iffy on weather – but it turned out to be a great day. Sorry we don’t have pictures of everyone. Gene & Shirley Mackey’s grandson, Ivar (age 8) and granddaughter, Eden (age 5) were chosen to participate in the “Mustard and Ketchup Race”. . . they were adorable as little bottles of ketchup and mustard . . .but their big thrill was the ride in the golf cart around the bases. Dan Young’s granddaughter, Amelia Vaughn, won a race as the Little Bee. . . and Lucky Row #2 won a slice of pizza for everyone in the row, thanks to Dan Young’s son-in-law, Bill Vaughn, who answered the trivia questions correctly.
