WELCOME TO CALVARY “The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God!”

Thank you for worshipping with us today. You are always welcome at Calvary!

500th Anniversary Of The Reformation - October 29, 2017 Traditional Worship Bulletin: Page 7, Contemporary Worship Bulletin: Page 16

On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the gospel of Christ—the good news—that makes us free!

We pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to unite the church today in its proclamation and witness to the world. In the waters of baptism we are made one body;

we pray for the day that all Christians will also be one at the Lord’s table.

Commemorations for this week… Reformation Day Tuesday, October 31, 2017 By the end of the seventeenth century, many Lutheran churches celebrated a festival commemorating Martin Luther's posting of the Ninety-five Theses, a summary of abuses in the church of his time. At the heart of the reform movement was the gospel, the good news that it is by grace through faith that we are justified and set free. All Saints Day Wednesday, November 1, 2017 The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saints Day celebrates the baptized people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. On this day or the following Sunday, many congregations will remember the faithful who have died during the past year. Martín de Porres, renewer of society, died 1639 Friday, November 3, 2017 Martín was the son of a Spanish knight and a freed black slave from Panama. As a lay brother in the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), he engaged in many charitable works in Lima, Peru. He founded an orphanage, a hospital, and a clinic for cats and dogs.

Greeting, Announcements & Sharing of Joys & Concerns … Pastor

Prelude … “How Great Thou Art” … Boberg/Nevue

Drama 1: Two Christians from Luther’s day are on their way to church, discussing the current

unrest due to Luther’s presenting of his 95 Theses. The date is soon after October 31, 1517.

*Opening Prayer...Pastor with Congregation

P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

C I thank thee, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, thy dear Son, that thou hast

kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray thee that thou wouldst keep

me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings in life may please thee. For

into thy hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let thy holy angel

be with me, that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen.

*The Hymn is sung by the congregation to the tune Erhalt Uns, Herr LM:

Lord, keep us steadfast in your Word; curb those who by deceit or sword;

Would wrest the kingdom from your Son and bring to nought all he has done.

Lord Jesus Christ, your pow’r make known, for you are Lord of lords alone;

Defend your holy Church that we may sing your praise triumphantly.

O Comforter of priceless worth, send peace and unity on earth;

Support us in our final strife and lead us out of death to life.

Drama 2: Luther, in the monastery, struggles with his faith

The Anthem…Calvary’s Adult Choir… “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”… Arr. By David Johnson

The Old Testament Lesson … Jeremiah 31:31-34 … Lay Reader

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the

house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on

the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant

that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. For this is the covenant that I

will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law with-

in them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my peo-

ple. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the

Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord.

For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Drama 3: Luther’s awareness of the importance of God’s Word.

The Second Lesson … Romans 3:19-28 … Lay Reader

Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that

every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For by

works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes

knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law,

although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through

faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and

fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption

that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received

Vs. 1-Choir & Congregation

A mighty fortress is our God,

A bulwark never failing:

Our helper he amid the flood

Of mortal ills prevailing;

For still our ancient foe

Doth seek to work us woe;

His craft and power are great,

And, armed with cruel hate,

On earth is not his equal.

Vs. 2-Choir

Vs. 3-Choir & Congregation

And though this world,

with devils filled,

Should threaten to undo us;

We will not fear,

for God hast willed

His truth to triumph through us;

The prince of darkness grim,

We tremble not for him:

His rage we can endure,

For lo, his doom is sure,

One little word shall fell him.

Vs. 4-Choir & Congregation

That word above all earthly

powers,

No thanks to them, abideth;

The spirit and the gifts are ours

Through him who with us sideth:

Let goods and kindred go,

This mortal life also;

The body they may kill:

by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had

passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might

be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of our boast-

ing? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. For

we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

Drama 4: Luther’s realization of salvation by faith in Jesus.

The Gospel Lesson … John 8:31-36… Pastor

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my

disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him,

“We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you

say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone

who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son

remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Drama 5: Luther’s reliance of God’s grace above all else, as he stands before the church

authorities at the Diet of Worms and says, “I cannot, and will not, recant.”

Creedal Hymn sung by the congregation to the tune Wir Glauben All (metrical) 87 77

(you may remain seated)

We all believe in one true God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, Ever-present help in need,

praised by all the heav’nly host; All he made his love enfolds, all creation he upholds.

We all believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Mary’s son, Who descended from his

throne and for us salvation won; By whose cross and death are we rescued from all misery.

We all confess the Holy Ghost, who from both in truth proceeds, Who sustains and

comforts us in all trials, fears and needs. Blessed, holy Trinity, praise forever be to thee!

Hymn of Justification sung by the congregation to the tune Nun Freut Euch 87 87 887:

(you may remain seated)

Dear Christians, one and all, rejoice, with exultation springing, And, with united heart

and voice and holy rapture singing, Proclaim the wonders God hath done, how his right

arm the vict’ry won; Right dearly it hath cost him.

Fast bound in Satan’s chains I lay, death brooded darkly o’er me, Sin was my torment

night and day, in sin my mother bore me; Yea, deep and deeper still I fell, life had become

a living hell, So firmly sin possessed me.

My own good works availed me naught, no merit they attaining; Free will against God’s

judgment fought, dead to all good remaining. My fears increased till sheer despair left

naught but death to be my share; The pangs of hell I suffered.

But God beheld my wretched state before the world’s foundation, And, mindful of his

mercies great, he planned my soul’s salvation. A Father’s heart he turned to me, sought

my redemption fervently: He gave his dearest Treasure.

He spoke to his beloved Son: “’Tis time to have compassion. Then go, bright Jewel of my

crown, and bring to man salvation; From sin and sorrow set him free, slay bitter death for

him that he May live with thee forever.”

*Proper Preface… Pastor We praise you, all-holy God, our Covenant Lord, our Redeemer, the Strength of Truth, for the water of Wittenberg and for flowers in this place, for our ancestors and godparents from around the globe, for seminaries and missions and fellowship halls, for Jeremiah and the psalmists, for Luther, Melanchthon, Muhlenberg and Fedde, for Katie Luther and Cranach, Bach and Nicolai, Nommensen and Kierkegaard, Bonhoeffer and Hammarskjold, for all serv-ants of the Reformation. We praise you O God, for Jesus Christ, embodying forgiveness, granting us grace, setting us free, who on the night before he died, took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat: this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. And so we remember your Word, his presence in this meal around the world, you law, your grace, your freedom. Bless this meal and all those who share it; continue the reformation of your church-es; with the joy of life in your household, mighty Fortress, victorious Champion, powerful Shield, today, tomorrow and forever we praise your name and join their unending hymn: *Sanctus… “Holy, Holy, Holy…” … In Unison … ELW Page 153

Communion Hymn … “For By Grace You Have Been Saved” … ELW # 598

The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you

and keep you in His grace. Amen.

*The Prayers are spoken responsively by the worship assistant and the congregation:

P We give thanks to you, almighty Father, as we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Refor-

mation. Help us to see anew this day what an monumental impact Martin Luther’s nailing of

the 95 Theses has had on our faith today. Help us to continue to live in the faith grounded in

your grace uncovered for us so long ago. O Mighty Fortress, strong Defender,

C Give us grace to continue in your Word.

P Stir in us a desire to know you more and know your Word on a deeper and deeper level, as

Martin Luther sought to do. Fill us with the urge to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest all

you have to say to us through your Holy Scriptures, and let us never turn away from your

messages of undeserved forgiveness and love. O Mighty Fortress, strong Defender,

C Give us grace to continue in your Word.

P Your Word continues to guide and direct us in our relationships with other. Grant us true

knowledge from your Word to share with those who are hurting or doubting, that they may

find the rest and reassurance they need that you are always with them and you will always

care for them. O Mighty Fortress, strong Defender,

C Give us grace to continue in your Word.

P We praise you for the long line of reformers who followed Martin Luther and remained faith-

and love. Amen.

“A Mighty Fortress” … Nockels, Nockels, Brown & Robertson

Drama 2: Luther, in the monastery, struggles with his faith

Special Music… Crossroads

“Mighty to Save” … Fielding & Morgan

For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and

fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption

that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received

by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had

passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he

might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of our

boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of

Page 18: Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church Of Dover PA · 2017. 11. 1. · Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church Of Dover PA Building On 500 Years of Lutheran Heritage The Rev. John M. Woods,

18

faith. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

How is it that you

say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who

practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains

forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Drama 5: Luther’s reliance of God’s grace above all else, as he stands before the church

authorities at the Diet of Worms and says, “I cannot, and will not, recant.”

I see you In the sunrise;

I see you In the rain.

I see you In the laughter;

I feel you through the pain.

Everything that you have made is beautiful.

Oh my God, I can’t believe my eyes.

But in all of this to think that you would think of me

Makes my heart come alive.

Your love is like a mighty fire deep inside my bones.

I feel like I could climb a thousand Mountains all at once.

And I never have to wonder if somebody cares for me.

I love the Maker,

And the Maker loves me.

Oh whoa, oh, oh whoa, oh oh oh

I see you In the sunrise;

I see you In the rain.

I see you In the laughter;

Your love is like a mighty fire deep inside my bones.

I feel like I could climb a thousand Mountains all at once.

And I never have to wonder if somebody cares for me.

I love the Maker,

And the Maker loves me.

Oh whoa, oh, oh whoa, oh oh oh

And, the Maker loves me.

And, the Maker loves me.
