IntentionsIntentions
I am proving that students from poorer backgrounds are lesslikely to go university compared to those students who are
financially stable. I am proving that students from poorer
backgrounds who deserve to go university will not be able to get
the degree and career which they would like. Also because of the
rise in fees students are being put of, they are confused as it is
hard for students to make up their mind. Majority of students
think that it is not worth going any more, not sure what path to
take as they thought that going university was they only way tosucceed.
I am proving
I am exploring
I am exploring on the number of students
who will and not be going university next
year. Looking at students who will be taking
gap years because they feel that it is a huge
sum of money and need to work on order to
pay for their education. As well as looking at
students who will not be going universityanymore and have chosen to go straight into
jobs and apprenticeships as they feel there
is no point of going university anymore.
My ANGLE of my documentary is
what affects the increase in university
fees will have on students. I will be
informing my audience on the affectsof going university now that they have
risen. To also het them prepared as
well as for them to make the right
decision.
I am challenging
I will be mostly be showing the
affects and disadvantages students
will have to face when they go
university in 2012..
I am investigatingI am going to be investigating in the increase in tuition fees ,
I will be looking at different opinions and views to find outwhy they have risen. As well as finding out what affect this
will have on the younger generation. I will be comparing
opinions of students of different socio economic groups to
find out their opinions on the increase in fees.

Content of idea My topic is on increase on university fees and my angle is how this will have an affect on students.
It is a current recent topic which everyone knows about and want more information on as it will be
changing from next year as they will be the first to be affected. The unique selling point of my
documentary is that there are no other documentaries talking about the disadvantages on the increase in
tuition fees, other than being discussed on the news. My documentary will be unique as I will not only be
getting opinions form students but also specialists to balance out the topic to get different feedback. From
students and professionals points of view.
The angle of my documentary is to show that there are negatives for the rise in fees as I will be mainly
looking at the negative side.

Key questions my documentary will answer:
What are the affects of increase in tuition fees?

Can the tuition fees be reduced to a certain amount in the UK?
I will be getting opinions from professionals and students about the topic.
I will be showing images of students during the protest To show that they are angry as well as footage
of students in university.

Profile of target audience and appeal
of your idea
My documentary is aimed between the range of 16-24 year olds as mainly youths aretargeted in going to university. Therefore in order to appeal to young people I will beusing young people around the age group in order to meet the brief. I will be usingolder people in my documentary such as specialists giving advice to youths. Thereforeagain appealing to my target audience. An example for this is a shots of studentssocialising with their friends, they will be around the same age group as my target
audience.
My documentary will be targeted towards both males and females this suggests mydocumentary can be generalised and appeal to both genders as both have equalopportunities to go into further education for higher qualifications.
My target audiences hobbies consist of reading magazines, keeping updated with thenews and sports. This suggests that my audience are intelligent, sociable and take
interest in updating themselves about the latest information in the society throughnews. They find out about the news by several ways such as Facebook, newspapers, online websites, radio and BBC news. They also like to watch programmes which arelinked to university fees and politics.
The socio economic group of my target audience is D to E there education status ishaving GSCEs and A-Levels. This shows that some of my target audience are ineducation in school or college, majority of them have part time jobs , and whilst other
are unemployed.

Profile of target audience and appeal
of your idea My documentary appeals to all cultures and backgrounds that people are from, as everyone has the right
to education and no one should be ignored and should be treated fairly. In order to meet the brief my
documentary will include different ethnicities such as vox pops opinions from the public as well as
interviews with professionals to make my documentary appealing for everyone to watch as it is important
for all ethnicities.
The monthly disposable spending power of my audience is between 60-120. This is because they arelikely to spend less as they are students and now that EMA has been scrapped they are even likely to
spend less. This suggests that student budget is tight and reflects why some are unable to go to university
because of their decrease in disposable income. This suggests that people from lower economic groups
such as students have less spending power.
My documentary is aimed towards a niche target audience it does not appeal to all students only those
who want to go university. It is aimed towards mainly students from poorer backgrounds who are less
privileged to go university and will be taking their views into consideration and why they cannot go. As
this documentary will help them make a choice as well as giving them advice and information which would
be right for them.

Explanation of Research and Key
Findings
For focus groups
All the feedback I received from the group all consisted of positive feedback. They thought that it was an interesting
topic and said there is not much information out their for students to know about. The group agreed that 27,000
will have a huge impact on students as they will have a massive debt. Further more they added that there are still
other ways to be successful such as through apprenticeships and training schemes.
This made it easier for me to choose this topic as it is not only effective but appeals to both genders . The topic does
not focus on one particular gender as everyone has the right to study.
The research included qualitative, I had to write up what my focus group thought about my topic after finishing
discussing about it.

Explanation of Research and Key
FindingsFacts and statistics
The type of research used was secondary, none of the research was my own it already exists.
The facts and statistics included of both qualitative and quantitative an example for facts are parents
cannot afford the fees. An example for statistics is 52,321 applicants have applied from within the UK,
compared with 59,413 this time last year.
The facts and figures has given me a clear understanding about the topic as I have gained more new
knowledge which I can include in my documentary.

13/22
Explanation of Research and Key
FindingsFor questionnaires
The type of research I used was Primary. I carried it out myself the research did not exist.
It consisted of both qualitative and quantitative questions. Example for this are I found out what myaudience like doing in their spare time. In this case they like to go out shopping and socialise with
their friends., I also found out their monthly disposal which is 60-120.
For textual analysis
They type of research I used was Primary, I analysed the documentaries my self it did not exist.
I found out that the pace was slow and boring as it did not consist of fast editing and fast cuts.
The type of conventions which were used in the documentary was a female voice over to informthe audience what was happening through out. As well as few archive footage and images whichwere related to the topic so that they audience do not get bored with a lot of talking.

14/22
Explanation of Research and KeyFindings
What I found from Facts and figures
From the facts and statistics I found out that the number of students willing to go university compared to last year
has decreased. This shows that universities will have less students and less people will have higher qualifications.
A high number of students are put of completely of going university, whist other students are having second
thoughts. This shows that students are confused and dont know what to do with their lives any more. Shows that
less students will now have degrees in the UK.
I have also found out that 14% from poorer backgrounds are less likely to go compared to 9% who are privileged.
This shows that students from privileged backgrounds have more of a chance of going university. However those
students who are bright and are less privileged are being neglected. This shows me that more people would want to
watch my documentary for advice.
What I found from questionnaires
I found out whether my audience are even in part time or full time education, the responses I received showed methat majority of my audience are still in full time education in school. Whilst a small number of people are in part
time education in college.
For social matters mostly everyone from the questionnaires said that they are worried about the rise in tuition fees
and want more information in depth. My audience said all the information is repeated also there are not any other
programmes or documentaries linked to the topic which they would like to watch. They would not want to make the
wrong decision and be in a huge debt of 27,000 which they would struggle to pay off.
I found out that they thought that this idea is useful and appealing as they want to find out new information not on
information which is constantly repeated and informed on.

Explanation of Research and KeyFindings
What I found from textual analysis
I found out that the old documentary appealed to mostly men as it only included views and opinions on what
men thought. It did not take on to board on women's opinions as it did not include any vox pops and interviews
from women.
The documentary appealed to a much older audience as it was old fashioned , it consisted of interviews from
older people which did not in any way appeal to a younger target audience.
Not much archive footage was used so the documentary d id not entertain the audience. This made it boring
and long to watch as also because it did not consist of background music.
What I found out from the focus groupI found out that the topic appealed to the focus group as majority of the people I asked , said they
will be going university soon whilst a small number of students said no, they would rather prefer do
apprenticeships and courses instead. They are interested in the topic as they watched the news
when the protest started. They also thought that it was a wrong decision for the government to
make as everyone will now be affected, especially those who will not be able to pay for their
education. They all agreed and thought because the fees will be increasing in 2012 this will have an
huge impact on students especially those from poorer backgrounds as they may not be able to
carry on with their education and look for jobs.

Practical Viability
I will be using archive footage of students protesting from YOU TUBE which I will be needing permission to use
before hand using it for my documentary.
Professor- This interview will be with a
professor Robert Kagawa from
Roehampton University. The interview
will be filmed in his office, in order to
film I will be needing a camera, tripod,
tape and batteries. I have already asked
for permission for this interview.
Lee Scott- This interview will be with
Lee Scott a governmental minister.
The interview will be filmed in his
office. In order to film I will be
needing a camera, tripod, tape and
batteries. I have already asked for
permission.
Head of sixth form- This interview will
be with Miss Myford. The interview
will be filmed in her office. In order to
film I will needing a camera, tripod,
tape and batteries. I still need to ask
for permission.
Mike Gapes- This interview
will be with an MP in his
office, I will be needing a
camera, tape, tripod and
batteries. I have already asked
for permission.

DefamationI cannot criticize the views and opinions of anyone taking part in my documentary such as
the professor, Lee Scott the governmental minister, Connexions, miss Myford and
students. Without having the correct information to support what I have to say. If the
information is false an example for this is if I lied and said that the governmental minister
does not care about students paying a huge amount of fees, I would get into trouble as I
will have to go court, this would mislead my audience and set a bad image on a innocent
person who has been excused for something which they have not done.
Media Law
Privacy and confidenceAs my documentary will include interviews from specialists, an example for this is a
governmental minister. I will need to ask his permission as it will consist of
confidential information. If I do not ask for permission and make his information
public I will get in trouble for releasing his information without his approval. However
in this case I have asked for permission beforehand and will be able to release the
footage.
Copy RightMajority of the sources which I will be using for my documentary will be
secondary, such as archive footage and images of students protesting, as
well as up beat music for the background. All of the materials which I will be
using will not be my own and will have to get permission from the owner
before using any of them for my work. This is because I do not have the right
to use someone elses resources without authorisation.

18/22
Legal and Regulatory
Considerations
Media Law this is when producers have to put up with legal rules to prevent criminal offences whilst
filming. The law says that guidance is necessary.
Reconstruction- My documentary cannot consist of interviews with people who are pretending to be a
specialist when they are not. This would not only be misleading but would also cause confusion to myaudience. As I cannot reconstruct something which did not happen, an example for this is an interview
someone who looks similar to a governmental minister. Furthermore I will not only get in trouble but
my audience will not find my documentary reliable to watch as they would think that it consists of false
information.
Criminality- This can affect my documentary as it cannot consist of violence as it will not be suitable for
younger people to view. This is because younger people were also involved in the protest which would
influence them in a negative way. As they would think that there is nothing wrong with the actions tookplace on that day. Examples of some archive footage of a man throwing a fire distinguisher from a roof
who got sentenced for two years and eight months. Also footage of students attacking the police force ,
police vans, smashing shop windows and shouting using abusive language. This would not be
appropriate for children to view.

BBC Editorial Guidelines
BBC Editorial is to keep peoples privacy secure, the BBC has several rules, which the producer has to
take into account, whilst filming.
Serving the public interest This will affect my documentary as it will inform and educate myaudience on the affects of the rise in fees. I have to give new information otherwise my audience will
loose interest and not be interested in my documentary. They are interested in this particular topic
were they want more information to make a decision my documentary will not be misleading as it will
consist of correct information and interviews with professionals on what they think.
Truth and Accuracy This will affect my documentary because I need to make sure that all ofmy sources are correct and does not consist of false incorrect information this is because it will not
only be untrustworthy but will not educate my audience as it will educate them in a wrong way which
will be dishonest. The facts and statistics have to be accurate otherwise will be breaking the media law.

Commercial ViabilityBudgetIn order to create my documentary the budget which I was given was 7,500,000.
I will only need to purchase basic camera equipment.
My budget will be spent on the following:
Camera- I will be buying a camera in order to film my whole documentary. (48.05)
Tripod- I will be buying a tripod for steady shots throughout the documentary. (41.00)
Boom mic- I will have to pay for a boom mic for the documentary. (250)Tapes- I will need tapes for the documentary. (6.00)
Apple mac- To import all the footage for the documentary. (1,361,00)
Final cut pro- Software to edit my documentary. (410)
Voice recorder- To record voice overs. (35.00)
I will not have to pay for any of the locations which I will be filming in as I have already asked for permissionfrom specialists before hand which I will be interviewing. (An example for this is a professor in his office).
I will not have to travel too far as all of my locations I have chosen are local, which means that the costs forpublic transport will be low and will not cost much.
All of the shots are easy, straight forward and simple to film it will not cause any difficulty as they can berecorded by anyone. This is because all of the shots will be basic.

Distribution/Exhibition
My documentary will cover the BBC ethos as it will inform my audience on what my documentary is going
to be based on, in this case I will be introducing the topic by presenting the increase in tuition fees.
It will consist of simple facts and statistics on what impact it is going to have on future students and
problems which they will have to face. Such as the number of students who will and not be going
university this will show my audience that less number of people will be going university compared to
previous years.
My documentary is going to be entertaining as it will include different locations so my audience does not
get bored with only one location. Such as the university and the governmental ministers office. I will be
using a variety of different shots from longshots of me presenting, mid shots and close ups whilst
interviews to get peoples facial expressions and panning of the university to show the whole building as
well as scenery and students walking past to make it look appealing to my audience. It will balance out the
topic as it will consist of getting opinions from both experts as well as students to hear both sides. As wellas vox pops from the public from the street and upbeat music to keep my audience tuned in throughout.

The market
For unique selling point I have not yet seen any documentaries which is on or linked in any way to the
increase in university fees , apart from seeing clips from UTUBE and the BBC NEWS. There are no other
documentaries out their in their market and I feel that my documentary will give my audience an insight on
new important information which will be valuable and helpful for them to view.
A programme which is on the market which targets my target group is Misfits, it is aimed towards both
males and females of all ethnicities. They use people around the same age group which my documentary is
targeted towards. From this I can pick out points from the programme which I can use for my documentary, such as the type of address they use, Which in this case in informal . This is the type of language my audience
would use because my documentary is aimed towards teenagers and young adults. I am able to use this is in
some parts of my documentary an example for this is for vox pops, this is for my audience to connect and
relate to. This is because they are more likely to tune out if its formal through out the whole documentary.
Another point is the type of music they use which is upbeat music, I can use current music which my audience
listens to keep them tuned in.
I will be broadcasting my documentary on Wednesday at 6.00pm An advantage for my documentary is thatthere are no documentaries out there which will be similar to my documentary for my audience to switch
over to or any good programmes which will appeal to my target audience.
