IEEE Student Branch at Poornima University, Jaipur

The IEEE Student Branch has been opened under Advanced Studies & Research Center (ASRC) of the

Poornima University vide welcome letter dated 22 June 2016 having Student Branch

code STB1014 and School Code is 60108724. The basic objective of opening this branch under ASRC

has been to further open different Society Chapters in various departments of the University thereby

involving all Bachelor, Master and Doctoral students and faculty in IEEE activities and awareness

through conduction of Technical Seminars, Workshops, Conferences and other technical & cultural

activities leading to promotion of IEEE and advancement of technology in right perspective. At present

there are more than 90 IEEE Student Members and more than 15 Professional members under the

branch.

Welcome Address by Head, ASRC

The function began with a welcome speech by the Dean (R & D) Dr. Mahesh Bundele , Professor & head

Dept of ASRC, PU. He welcomed - Dr. Rachana Garg, Secretary, IEEE Delhi Section, Immediate past

Chair PES Chapter, Delhi Section, Student Activities Chair ( Delhi, NCR) Delhi Section, Associate

Professor Delhi Technological University, Delhi, Dr. K. K. S. Bhatia, President Poornima University, Dr.

Manoj Gupta, Dean (SET & SOM) and Provost, Poornima University, Dr. Arun Dev Dhar Dwivedi,

Student Branch Counselor, Mr. Devendra Somwanshi Chair Student Branch & his team of Office bearers,

Mr. Ashish Raj, Chair, PES Chapter of the University, Mr. Devendra Doda, Advisor, PES Chapter, Deans

& heads of Poornima University, Participants across Jaipur, other guests and delegates. He told that this is

13th Technical activity of the Student Branch since its inception in June 2016. He said that we have opened

four IEEE Society Chapters under the branch and submitted petition for Women in Engineering Affinity

Group. He also discussed the benefits of IEEE Membership and facilities of Power & Energy Society. He




told that Poornima University IEEE student branch website was created as provided by the headquarter and

it is being maintained. He also requested Dr. Rachana Garg to extend her cooperation and support in

organizing activities in Poornima University and in Rajasthan. He expressed his special thanks to

management of Poornima University for extending financial support in organizing various activities.

Lastly, he thanked to Dr. KKS Bhatia and Dr. Manoj Gupta for their cooperation and support from

planning to execution of the activities under the student branch.

Introduction of the Program by Branch Counselor:

Dr. Arun Dev Dhar Dwivedi, Professor, Branch Counselor, IEEEE student Branch did welcome of to all

the dignitaries on the dais, guests & participants of the function. He briefly introduced the IEEE Student

Branch Poornima University that a petition has been filed in the month of March 2016 and it has been

approved by IEEE head quarter during the last week of June 2016. He stated the vision and mission which




one should have for the growth of all activities in the branch. He briefed about the activities conducted by

the branch during June 2016 to March 2017 and further said, PES Chapter will conduct short courses,

student seminars and conferences, mini projects and ethics competitions and many more. He also briefed

the participants about the objectives of the student branch/ chapter including their encouragement in

Research projects and IEEE- PES funding / award to the best projects. He enlightened the audience about

IEEE and IEEE PES Chapter, its functions and services it renders to the society. He told that currently

more than 90 members are there in the IEEE students Branch Poornima University which includes

bachelors, masters, doctoral students and faculty members. Lastly he expressed his best wishes for success

of the seminar.

The Provost Dr. Manoj Gupta congratulated to Prof. Dr. Mahesh Bundele & his team for their

successful attempt to establish an IEEE Student Branch at the university and wished them the best for

the further events. He said, Poornima University is committed for providing quality education to the

students. Our faculty members are highly qualified and they are utilizing their best potentials for the

improvements of curricular and co-curricular activities. In this regard, IEEE PES will provide a platform

for improving the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA’s) of both student’s professionals and the

students of the electrical engineering. He told that Power System Planning, Operation and Control,

Renewable Energy Systems are important areas for Electrical engineering students to do their research

work. He further said, Poornima University will provide full support in terms of resources and university

facilities for newly inaugurated society chapters.

Dr. Rachna Garg Secretary IEEE Delhi section, Secretary, Immediate past Chair PES Chapter, Delhi

Section, Student Activities Chair ( Delhi, NCR) Delhi Section delivered inaugural address. She said that

the Power & Energy Society (PES) provides the world's largest forum for sharing the latest in




technological developments in the electric power industry, for developing standards that guide the

development and construction of equipment and systems, and for educating members of the industry and

the general public. She apprised students about the objectives of IEEE PES. She told the pros and cons

of being an IEEE member and informed about resources available for students. Some specific benefits of

Membership in the IEEE Power & Energy Society such as; Free subscription to PES award-winning

Power & Energy magazine, Free membership in your local PES chapter, Discounts at dozens of PES

sponsored or co-sponsored conferences and meetings in the area and around the world were also

informed. She also threw a light upon some of the trending technologies in the field of Electrical

Engineering. She shared her own experience in the IEEE and PES and motivated the audience. She

wished Power & Energy Society Poornima University the very best in all its endeavors.

Then President, Dr. K.K.S Bhatia did welcome of all the guests and participants. He said that IEEE

PES Chapter will benefit the students in their academics. He discussed about the conventional sources

of energy in the present world where the fossil fuels are being depleted at an alarming rate. Also




elaborated benefits of non conventional energy sources such as solar and wind. He also talked about

personality development requirements expected from the new engineers. He further through a specific

case in Shool Movie and stated the misunderstanding of the people in old days about tidel power. In the

movie, it was shown that building of a certain dam over the river on the grounds and drawing electricity

from water will result in loss of qualities of water useful for agriculture and thereby loss to the farmers.

He appreciated the efforts of IEEE Student branch members for organizing the event.

In the end, Mr. Ashish Raj offered a vote of thanks to Chief Guest of the Inaugural program and

distinguished speaker Dr. Rachna Garg for sparing her valuable time and motivating the participants. He

expressed gratitude and thanks to Dr. K.K.S. Bhatia, President Poornima University for his gracious

presence and motivational speech in the program. Further expressed obligations to Dr. Mahesh Bundele,

& Dr. Manoj Gupta for their presence and guidance for conduction of the program. He thanked all the

participants without whom the program could not have been a success. He thanked all office bearers of




IEEE student branch, PES chapter and student members of PU Student branch for their efforts in

conducting the program. He also thanked Poornima University management for providing all kinds of

facilities for the inaugural ceremony of PES student chapter.

Technical Seminar

Title: Overview of Micro-grids: Concepts, Issues and Challenges

Talk Delivered:

Dr. Rachna Gupta started the session with the overview of Micro-grid including motivation, need of

micro-grid, basic concepts, definitions, types and examples of Micro-grid. She also discussed about

objectives, classification, types and terminologies of distribution generation. She explained some

technical issues of micro grid like Integration with the existing utility network, Role of power electronics,

Impact on power quality, Impact on reliability, Impact on environment and DR modeling for improved

stability of operation. She also discussed the Role of Energy Storage in Micro-Grids and its technologies.

She told that micro grids are termed as loads by conventional grids. Micro grid can draw power from main

grid or feed when having excess power generation. When it feeds the power it is considered as negative

load and when it draws, it is positive load. Also talked about the presence of generation in the distribution

system, protection schemes designed for unidirectional power flow may become ineffective. It may results

in false tripping, undesirable network islanding, prevention of automatic and asynchronous re-closing. She

discussed about islanding of micro grids and issues considered related to islanding. Finally, she concluded

the session that the Micro-grids is the need of the day and can be very useful in making use of renewable

resources for electricity generation also they can provide electricity at reasonable cost to remote, isolated

communities.
