I have been a student of the impact of personal leadership since my days as anofficer in the US Army. Fixed/Stagnant Mindset3. Actively Sharpen Your SkillsSince we are in the opening weeks of MajorLeague Baseball, here is a fascinating article for your enjoyment and inspiration.

Several years ago the New York Times ran an article about Baseball Hall of FamerTed Williams, the self-proclaimed “greatesthitter who ever lived.” Williams was the lasthitter in major league baseball to break the.400 batting average barrier, recording a.406 batting average for the Boston RedSox in 1941. The article recounted thatamazing season, and the methodical wayWilliams approached his craft.“After many games he took extra battingpractice,” the article mentioned, almost asan afterthought. But imagine: Here wasone of the greatest hitters of all time, takingextra batting practice, night after night,sharpening his skills. Is it any wonder thathe accomplished something that no hitterhas since—or ever may again? So letʼs look at a bit more of the mindsetof Ted Williams:• Williams was a passionate student ofhitting and a strategic thinker regarding his craft. • He actually used a lighter bat than mostsluggers, because he said that it generateda faster swing and bat head speed at theplate. David Halberstamʼs Summer of ʼ49recalls him warning teammates not toleave their bats on the ground as they wouldabsorb moisture and become heavier.(The lighter bat was a different approach.)• He was never satisfied, always lookingfor an edge. • He had a passion to hit for power and

batting average while being amazingly disciplined in the batterʼs box.• He was known to share his insights andskills developed over his 19 years as amember of the Boston Red Sox with manyactive players.We can all learn a lesson from these keyelements of his success. Despite the levelof excellence he had achieved, and wouldcontinue to achieve throughout his career,Williams knew enough to focus on thebasics. He got in the batterʼs box againand again, and took his cuts, as they say. In 1970 he wrote a book on the subject,The Science of Hitting (revised 1986),which is still read by numerous activemajor league baseball players today. How about you? Are you working on thebasics in your business, always looking to move forward by sharpening yourskills? Do you require the same of your colleagues? As the saying goes, itʼs thelittle things that matter. For Ted Williams,the little things added up over time, and cemented his status as one of the legendary athletes of our time.If youʼre looking for legendary results, why not focus on the basics first? Doingso might just provide the foundation for the breakthrough youʼre looking for—for yourself and your organization. It startswith a Learning/Active Mindset and thepassion and commitment for excellencethrough action and personal accountability.

A Star Is BornProgressive Auto Group has broken ground on Northeast Ohioʼs premier state-of-the-artcar wash—Star Wash, where the customerʼscar is the star. It is located on 2030 WalesAvenue N.E. in Massillon on the site of the

former Friendlyʼs restaurant.“We are excited to offer this amazing

service to all car and truck owners” said CraigSanders, president of the Progressive Auto Group. “My brother Timand I represent the fourth generation of our family-owned business,which was founded in 1937 by our great-grandfather, and we look forward to continued growth.”John Dunn, director of service operations at Progressive Auto Groupsays, “We sell great cars, and we take great pride in repairing our customersʼ vehicles in both our service centers and body shop. Now,we will be able to provide an amazing car wash. This facility will beable to wash over 100 vehicles an hour and even give customersaccess to free vacuums.”The timeline for completion of this project is August 1, according toFred Oliveri Construction, the general contractor. Huntington Bank is the financial partner in this enterprise.

The Workforce Initiative Association, operator of the OhioMeansJobsCenters in Stark and Tuscarawas Counties, has been awarded a$41,065 technical assistance planning grant from the AppalachianRegional Commission for the Coal Business United Resource NetworkReal-Time Insights for Real-Time Actions project. The grant will resultin the implementation of a formal multi-state planning process to obtaina better understanding of current and future workforce opportunities incoal-impacted communities in parts of Ohio, West Virginia, andPennsylvania.
