Hurricane Sandy Forces Reroute of

Delhigh’s 17th Annual Road Rally

Preceded by a night with friends, dinner and cocktails (not necessarily in that order),

we head off for the start of another Road Rally. When we arrived at the diner for breakfast

(the traditional starting point), we were hoping Michael and his committee would announce

we were now at the halfway point, given we already spent ½ hour in the car, but that was not

to be.

As participants continued to arrive we noted quickly the vast number of D5 squad-

rons represented. Alphabetically, they included Absecon Island, Annapolis, Delaware River,

Delhigh, Dundalk, Kent Narrows, Kingsway, Main Line and last, but certainly not least, Rock-

ville.

In addition to squadron members were past coworkers of Michael’s from Verizon, as

well as other family members and friends. Fifty-six in all, charioted by 12 vehicles.

For the first time in recent history, Michael completed the route weeks in advance,

rather than the usual 11th hour dash. Route was set, rally instructions printed, pictures taken

and printed; ready, set, go. Then along came Sandy! Low and behold, Sandy’s destruction left

debris lying across many of the roads built into the route, closing some roads and leaving

many others just too dangerous to attempt to traverse. The route was now a rout! It’s back

to the drawing board.

Many, (both participants and those who did not), might not understand just how a

route is developed. First you acquire a detailed road map of the area you want to run, you

sketch out a couple different options, trying to your best to keep the route within your desired

total distance. Then you go out and drive your options, make your choices, compose the

questions, take pictures (noting the locations), print out the route instructions, go back over

the route, tweak it, then print out the final multiple copies for the participants. Now parts had

to be redrawn. And Michael and his committee couldn’t just sit and draw changes, they had

to go out and check each proposed change to make sure the route is clear.

What started out to be 50 miles is now 63.8. Yup, 63.8 miles;

and talk about a trip to Grandma’s house, over the river(s) and

through the woods, on some roads only wide enough for one and a

half cars (YIKES) and inclines that rolled your eyes to the back of your

head, or plopped them out into your lap… in Bucks County, PA, across

4 covered bridges… totally redone in a couple of days! GREAT JOB

MICHAEL AND CREW!

Oh, and the destruction! Looking at pictures in the newspaper and on

TV just doesn’t compare to what it looks like up close and personal!

Mature trees uprooted or snapped in ½ like dead twigs, lying atop of

houses and out-buildings!

Ah yes, and for the second consecutive year I had to fire my

navigator (for missing TURN # 6). We’re not talking about turn 50

here, no – TURN 6! I’m not going to tell you who that person was

(See Mel, I told you I wouldn’t name the culprit). Anyway, that was

our only mistake.

The rally ended at the Plumsteadville Inn (circa 1751), lo-

cated in (you guessed it) Plumsteadville, PA. T’was quite a unique

place and oh, was the food ever so good (not to mention the dirty

martinis).

This article would be incomplete without listing the winners

(and consolation prize recipients):

1st Place -- Chris & Ginny Brown, Joe and Rosa Gibson from

Delhigh and Rockville Squadrons and Ginny’s daughter, Kim (they

cheated – too many sets of eyes).

2nd Place – Cindy Ebner, Paula Small, Robert & Kelly Cavall –

all form Verizon (they must have cheated too – friends of Michael’s –

probably had insider information).

3rd Place – Al & Marianne Ponzio and John & Kathy Nash,

from Annapolis Squadron (they must have cheated too, but I haven’t

figured out how yet).

Consolation Prize – Rolf Stuenes and Bobby Blaker from Dun-

dalk Squadron.

Looking again at the diverse squadron participation and how

this Road Rally has grown – maybe it’s time for this to become a D/5,

not a Delhigh event. Michael?

In light of the Fall Conference being cancelled due to

hurricane Sandy, webinars were held to share infor-

mation that was to be announced in Gettysburg for

D5. Delhigh gathered at the Nowroozani household

on 16 Nov. to attend the video conference. We had a

potluck at 1800 and the webinar began at 1900.

Those who represented Delhigh were: Joe Stemrich,

Camilla Stemrich, L.Chris Brown, Ginny Brown, Gary

Corcoran, Fernando Botelho, Michelle Botelho, Doug

McKenzie, Kathy McKenzie, Kathleen Nowroozani,

and Cyrus Nowroozani. Our boys Vince and Oliver,

plus our three dogs attended, yet were not as excited

as the rest of the crowd when Delhigh was men-

tioned for recognition:

he District 5 Commander’s Trophy for USPS® elec-tive courses award is presented to the District 5 squadron showing the greatest percentage increase in completion of the Elective Courses taught during the previous year. The elective courses include: Weather, Sail, Engine Maintenance, Marine Electron-ics, Marine Communication Systems, Cruise Plan-ning and Instructor Development. Co-Op Charting Honor Roll (Beverly Strothers) Certificate of Appreciation for Distinction in Civic Service.

Fun was had by all and we look forward to

participating in the next conference face to face, weather permitting. Congratulations to all who were recognized for their hard work, and thank you for tak-ing an active part in our squadron.

Vessel Safety Check Corner

I would like to start by thanking Delhigh’s Vessel Safety Examin-

ers for another great year.

We have six VSE’s who have completed 61 vessel safety checks.

To give you an idea of their dedication, they have logged in ap-

proximately 64 man hours collectively. The knowledge and ex-

perience of each of them has helped to educate the boater thus

making a difference in the way people look at law enforcement,

the regulations created to help keep us safe and hopefully have

helped them to understand why they need to take other boating

courses.

The season has come to an end and almost all the vessels have

been stowed for the long winter’s nap. Hopefully this will give

you the opportunity to correct any problems you may have had

and to look over your equipment; Life Jackets, flares, paperwork,

replenish your first aid kit, check your fire extinguishers, and a lot

more.

Where is He????????

By Michael Lebeduik, III I’ve done a lot of driving in all parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland,

Delaware, New Jersey and I still have not heard from or seen

The Lamp Master, creator of “Swinging the Lamp.”

I sure hope he’s OK!

It may be time for our membership to consider organizing a

search party to find the old salt. It’s starting to get awfully cold

out there and I would hate to see anything happen to the Old

Man!

I will gladly take your e-mail indicating that you miss him, too,

and want him back. Just contact me at tja.ml3@verizon.net. If

you care about the old salt as much as I do, please let me know.

I’m sure you miss the old man, too.

The last piece of information I received was the old salt was on

the back roads and woods in Bucks County. He may be trying to

find his way home!

The Oktoberfest covered dish social at the Lebeduik’s house Saturday 13 October 2012 at 1700 hours was well

received by the members who were present.

The ever popular Road Rally held 10 November, 2012 proved the land navigational skills of P/D/C L. Chris Brown

are unmatched as he navigated his team to victory. P/C Mike Lebeduik always puts together an exciting Land Navigation

Contest and it gets more popular and larger every year. This year we had participants from nine (9) squadrons and District

Executive Officer D/Lt/Cdr Marty Lafferty suggested that during his watch as D5 Commander we promote our Land Naviga-

tion Contest as a District Event. Nice job P/C Michael Lebeduik in promoting Delhigh and the Lehigh Valley at the district

level.

Our Holiday Party is just a week away and subject to cancellation because of a lack of participants, so get your

reservations to AO Lt/C Kathleen Nowroozani or contact her directly at 610-351-5192. More information and the registration

form can be found in the last issue of Delhighlights. This party will have a DJ, gift exchange, great food and good friends.

It’s time for our members who have missed the last few events to get involved. Remember we will give you a chance to win

that 32” flat screen LCD TV at the Change-Of-Watch just for attending Delhigh events.

On 16 November 2012 Delhigh Power Squadron participated in the first ever D5 Webinar via Gotomeeting.com

at the Nowroozani’s home. We made a pot-luck dinner party out of this exciting event as thirteen members who are always

looking for a reason to get together participated.

Start planning now to extend your holiday season by traveling with us to the Longwood Gardens on 5 January,

2013 and the Atlantic City Boat show 2 February 2013.

I’d like to take this opportunity to remind the Past Commanders that your duties on the Nominating Committee,

Budget and Finance Committee, and Audit Reports are due for our Founders Day meeting 6 February 2013. Committee

Chairs and responsibilities can be found in our squadron 2007 Delhigh Job Descriptions and our squadron Bylaws. Also the

Rules Committee report is due at the 2013 Change-Of-Watch. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact

Unfortunately the D5 Fall Conference in Gettysburg was cancelled due to the devastation created by Hurricane

Sandy or Superstorm Sandy or Frankenstorm. Whatever you called her, she sure did bring some havoc to the Mid-Atlantic

Region. I sincerely hope that you and your family remain safe after the storm. If you need help with recovery efforts or you

would like to volunteer to help someone who needs you please contact me and I can direct you to where you can help or

get help. Delhigh members want to help you and your family.

Finally I’d like to wish everyone a happy and safe Holliday Season. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy

Co-op Charting: (Article by Nora Parish, AP) For many years USPS–and District 5 led the way in Cooperative Charting efforts –serving recrea-tional boaters by maintaining and updating Navigation Charts. Now, with the increasing usage of electronic charts and GPS many squadrons no longer participate in the Cooperative Charting Pro-grams.

This year, more than any other in recent history, D5 has reason to man the oars, check out our wa-ters and do some valuable recruiting at the same time.

Given the nature of Sandy and other events of nature our coastlines, streams and other navigable waters have changed. There are hidden dangers not previously charted.

While we strive to recruit new members, are we missing opportunities to recruit from new sources? The Cooperative Charting Community believes so. There are many high school and college stu-dents that are interested in paddle boats and in the environment. Cooperative Charting has become the leading contender to join membership, environment and service. Sandy denied us the opportunity to present a project where those individuals who take advantage of this opportunity are given special recognition at Summer Council –Cape Charles, VA in 2013. Colonial Sail and Power has been successful in recruiting student participants in projects to support Virginia Institute of Marine Science. Those students come to participate in Poker Runs and other ac-tivities because of the Environmental aspects of the projects while spending time on the water.

Every squadron in District 5 is within reasonable travel distance of navigable waters –and near large populations of students. Cooperative Charting and V.I.M.S will be inviting those squadrons most successful in increasing participation in cooperative charting work and in recruiting new member’s participation with a special tour of the new V.I.M.S. Research Facility on the Eastern Shore. Lunch will be provided. More details will be available at the Winter Training Session and the Cooperative Charting Workshop in Portsmouth.

Ahoy Mates! USPS has many classes and seminars we teach to help all of us enjoy our boating experiences more and more, but none is more important than the ABC class offered to new boaters to teach the basics of safe boating! We are offering the ABC class on Sat., 16 March & 23 March, and another class on 6 April & 13 April, both to be held at Peters Marine in Allentown. Please encourage your family and friends to take advantage of these classes!

We will finally be teaching Seamanship starting in late

January and continuing for 8 weeks. This class has been

delayed a few times and we are very excited to be finally

running this class!

Delhigh hasn’t offered the Navigation class in a few years

so I’m really happy that we will be starting a new Naviga-

tion class on Tuesday, 20 November. We don’t have a

certified instructor for this class so Rich Norris, Chris

Brown, Kathleen Nowroozani, and Doug Mckenzie will be

teaching ourselves! We ask for your prayers!

We are still trying to find time to run the Cruise Planning

class this winter, date TBD!

I want to encourage you all to get your friends together

and take some classes this year! It’s a great way to learn

about our favorite pastime and have some fun at the

same time!

October and November were great months for activities in Delhigh! I

would like to thank Michael and Nikki Lebeduik for hosting our Octo-

berfest potluck! It was, as always, a fun gathering! Thanks to all at-

tending members for the delicious food and wonderful company.

November brought the Road Rally, the 9th annual Road Rally run by P/

C Michael Lebeduik. This year’s was said to have been the best yet

and with our very own P/D/C Chris Brown’s car coming in 1st place out

of 12 cars, I think it might have been a member of his car who had

mentioned that! Thank you to Michael and Nikki and the Road Rally

committee for another successful and fun year. Rumor has it that

someone got Michael to agree to do another year, so if you missed this

year’s festivities remember to come out next year and join the fun!

The Holiday Party is just about upon us but there are still a few more

days to get your reservation in if you would like to attend. This is our

last chance of the year to get dressed up and get together with our

boating buddies! There will be dinner, dancing, and our Pollyanna gift

exchange will be done in the fashion of the game, ”Let’s Make a Deal!”

E-mail me if you would like to get your reservation in on time!

In January, right after our first meeting of the year, we are heading

down to Longwood Gardens to see the sights and the lights! Their

indoor conservatory and gardens are open year round and their Christ-

mas display will still be up when we arrive, so it should be a great trip

with lots to see! You can also go to LongwoodGardens.org to see

what is in bloom this season! After a few hours in the cold we will be

heading back toward home and stopping at Doc Magrogan’s Oyster

House for dinner and a nice warm up! We have our own room and a

nice plated dinner all set up if you are interested, but please feel free to

skip the dinner and continue on at Longwood Gardens as long as you

like if you think that you would enjoy a longer stay.

Don’t forget our Founders Day Meeting in February is when we offi-

cially vote in next year’s bridge and discuss, then (hopefully) accept

the previous year’s budget. This coming February we will be meeting

and dining at The Brass Rail in Allentown, which has served us very

well in the past.

GERALD A. WERTMAN

Gerald died Saturday, 20 Octo-

ber 2012. He was 77.

Gerald was born in Allentown

and received a B.S. in Civil En-

gineering from the University of

Cincinnati. He was employed by

Bethlehem Steel and later by

Sungard Pentamation. He

served in the US Army for 28

years until retiring in 1987 as

Colonel. Gerry was a member

of the Honorary First Defenders

of the Lehigh Valley and was an

instructor for the US Coast Aux-

iliary and Delhigh Power Squad-

ron. He is survived by his wife,

Phyllis, 1 son, 2 daughters, 2

step-daughters and 9 grandchil-

dren.
