Happy 2019 Fairviewers! (Fairview-ites?) I hope everyone had a great holiday break!

In the next 4+ months, there are a number of opportunities for engagement and for you to provide input in the future of Fairview’s de-velopment and to explore different goals. The requests are coming from a couple of sourc-es and will cover multiple topics and we will be asking for community members to come out and share their ideas. Have your voice heard! Please keep an eye on our website (www.fairviewcommunity.ca ) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/FairviewYYC/). Whenever possible with our publishing deadlines, we will include information in this newsletter.

Please check our VP2 Christine Hentschel’s Board Bits update in this edition regarding the arena site.

Avenue Magazine is running their annual “Best Neighbourhoods Survey” and I would like to invite you to take their survey at www.avenue-calgary.com/Calgarys-Best-Neighbourhoods-Survey/ before February 28th.

As always, please connect with the board or a committee if you have any questions and let us know how you can help us ensure Fairview stays a great neighbourhood for decades to come. I look forward to working with everyone for 2019, working on the hopes and ideas of our residents, but also being part of Fairview’s continuing evo-lution.

arena site updateA member of our Board attended the Coordinated Site Project Plan meeting on December 4. The City provided the content for this update:

In January, winterization of the utility room will com-mence, and the slab and ice plant will be deconstructed and removed. The area will then be backfilled and grad-ed. These projects will take about a month, weather-de-pendent, and the chain link fence will remain for now. We anticipate construction noise during this phase.

Upon completion, we move to the “capital planning” and community engagement phase in February/March.

• CapitalPlanningisacoordinatedapproachforplan-ning and delivering civic facilities that evaluates the best use for the site and needs of the surrounding communities and city at large.

• Thisprocesstakesasubstantialamountoftime.Pre-paratory work began this summer and we anticipate thisprogramstartinginQ1of2019.

• Thisprocessandtheassessmentofneighbourhoodand city-wide needs will inform if a rink is an ap-propriate future use for this site. At this time, it has not been determined if a rink will be returned to the site.

• Theworkwilltakeintoconsiderationrequiredservices, needs of partners and the community, and explore possible uses for this site.

• TheCityisengagingwiththeexistingpartnersatthe site to ensure their immediate needs are being met. We will continue to work with them to incorpo-rate their future goals.

Once in a blue moon

Meaning: The phrase refers to something that happens very infrequently.

Origins: Confusingly, a blue moon doesn’t refer to the actual colour of the moon; it re-fers to when we see a full moon twice in one month. This happens every two to three years.

January membership updatemembership Drive - call for volunteersOne of the key ways the Fairview Community Association connects with residents is to sell our annual $15 memberships through a door-to-door Membership Drive each year. Many of you purchase your membership right at your own front door.

In order for our membership drive to be a success, we need a few more volunteers this year, so we are asking if you can help with door to door visits during the Membership drive. Each member of our Board of Directors is also a Membership Drive volunteer as well. We’d love for you to join us as we connect with our entire community!

If you can volunteer, please call our office at 403-252-5424 or send an email to [email protected]. You can also talk to any member of the Board at any time about what is involved in volunteering for this important drive - check our contact infor-mation at the beginning of this newsletter.

memBershipfairview casino 2019The Fairview Community Association has a very important fundraising event coming up in January and we need your help!

When: Wednesday and Thursday, January 23rd and 24thWhere: Deerfoot Inn and CasinoWhat is required?

We require about 40 volunteers, each working roughly 5- or 9-hour shifts. Volunteers must be 18 years or older. No ex-perience is required, and volunteer jobs are extremely easy with lots of down time. A meal is provided for volunteers and reasonable travel and babysitting expenses are also covered. Approximate shifts times are: 11:00am to 7:30pm; 6:45pm to 3:30am; and 11:00pm to 3:30am.

How can you get involved?

Call or email Dave at 403-454-8327 or [email protected].

Why is it so important?

This is by far the biggest fundraising event for this com-munity. We typically receive $65,000-70,000 (!) from this two-day event, requiring only about 40 volunteers. It would be very hard to ever raise this kind of money with lo-cal events. This money is spent on things to make this com-munity a better place!

What have casino funds been spent on?

Since our last casino in the summer of 2017, casino funds have been spent on our Fawn Playground rebuild, previous public skating and shinny hockey ice rental, advertising expenses for our various community events, our Fairview Family Festival and Film Night and a small portion towards operating expenses of the community association includ-ing insurance, office rent, printing and mailing expenses

What are the plans for future casino funds?

The community association is continually evaluating pos-sible projects and events/programs that would be eligible for casino funds. Casino funds will continue to pay for our Hazardous Waste Roundup, Fairview Family Festival & Film Night, Bowling with Santa event, donations to our com-munity partners (e.g. a $10,000 infrastructure donation is earmarked for In-Definite Arts), promotional materials and a maximum of 10% of casino funds go towards operating expenses. Other expenses that are under consideration in-clude redevelopment of the former Flint Park playground site (landscape architect and infrastructure expenses) and a community marker sign.

Special Events: Many events are provided throughout the year

which provides families an opportunity to meet others in the community and have

some fun. Events include stampede breakfasts,

craft fairs, skating parties, recycling days, and many

others.
