Changing Images Brightens up the Clubhouse

The second floor of our Clubhouse is busy. Each day, 100 or more members attend support groups in one of four designated rooms, and children and teens utilize the pan-try area, known as Gilda’s Study Corner, to do their homework with a trained volunteer. It had become a very tired and well-worn space.

Thanks to Changing Images Art Foundation, this heavily trafficked area recently received a bright and colorful make-over.

Because we strive to provide a warm and welcoming space to anyone

who walks through our Red Door, this is a welcomed change.

Red Door Society Reception held on February 7th

This annual reception is held each year to honor our most outstanding donors from the previous year. Gifts of $2,500 or more are considered for the Red Door Society. We are thrilled to announce that 70 donors qualified for the 2016 year, and 34 new plaques with the donor’s in-scriptions have been placed on the Red Door Society Wall.

Lily Safani, CEO and Migdalia Torres, Executive Director of Program & Offsite Expansion discussed goals and program updates for the 2017 year with Board members, Associate Board members, other special guests and donors, who attended the event. Member Joseph Bolton spoke of his cancer experience at Gilda’s Club and then revealed a beautiful painting of the Clubhouse.

Actress Emma Stone Screens La La Land for Teens and their Families

Emma Stone, in collaboration with Lionsgate Films, hosted a special preview screening in November of her Oscar winning movie, La La Land, in which she plays Mia, an aspiring actress living in Los Angeles who falls in love with an aspiring jazz musician.

The screening was held for teens from our program and their families. Emma, who recently won an Oscar Award for Actress in a Leading Role for La La Land, happily chatted with each teen in attendance and graciously posed for photos and signed autographs.

We are very grateful for Emma’s sincere commitment to our youth and for taking the time to do something special for our younger members.

The John Lennon® Real Love ProjectSpotlight

IN THE

We are excited to welcome back to Gilda’s Club, The John Lennon® Real Love Project workshop, a program of Theatre Within.

The John Lennon® Real Love Project is a songwriting and music workshop that teaches basic guitar and song writing techniques using John Lennon’s music and message as an inspiration. It is a program of Theatre Within, the grassroots non-profit behind the Annual John Lennon Tribute, whose mission is to foster individual growth and social good through the

performing arts and creative expression.

In the fall of 2016, the workshop was modified to fit with our Bereavement Noogie Night program for a 4-week series of music workshops. The children learned tips, tricks and smooth skills to put any feeling or thought into a song. Each child was given the opportunity to play a percussive instrument, sing, and write their own lyrics,

as well as to explore the music of John Lennon. Fifteen children participated in this special program.

This month, the program returns with acclaimed artists

Pete and Maura Kennedy leading the series for our adult members. “The program is based upon such an inspiring premise of love and creativity, we were excited to extend the workshop to our adult population,” says Emily Riordan, Program & Education Coordinator.

The four series workshop will teach Gilda’s Club members to play the guitar and ukulele, as well as write music. Each session will build upon the last session so in the end, members will be able to walk away with a finished product.

“No need to be alone. It’s real love, it’s real. Yes it’s real love, it’s real.”

Changing Images Brightens up the Clubhouse

Many years ago, we invited Changing Images to create a design for Noogieland. Arlene recounts the experience:

“We came up with a giant Noogieland banner and also an idea for a tree filled with giant, red hearts that had Gilda peeking around from behind the tree trunk. We organized a painting event during the course of an evening, where people were invited to join us and add their personal brushstroke on the pre-drawn paintings.

There were so many people in attendance that we soon were taking ceiling tiles down to draw and paint brightly colored butterflies on those as well. It was a magical night for all.”

In reconnecting with their past

sites, they struck up a conversation with Deborah Wilson, Director of Development and Lily Safani, CEO, who informed Changing Images of the unfortunate pipe burst that happened 3 years ago that ruined Noogieland, including a lot of the original artwork. However, through the generosity of donors, the room was restored.

Arlene asked us if we needed any other work done at the Clubhouse. After some thought, the second floor pantry area came to mind.

And just like that, Changing Images came through with transforming the area into an indoor gazebo with brightly colored flowers, butterflies and hot air balloons flying in cloud filled skies.

Says Sullivan, “It was an honor and privilege to be able to take on this project. We hope this newly finished area will bring a sense of calm to all who pass through, for many years to come. We certainly look forward to working with Gilda’s Club in the future.”

Many thanks to Arlene and Changing Images for the beautiful mural which has undoubtedly brought a positive and uplifting change to our space and to our members.
