After  the  inauguration  ceremony  Dr.  Pattanayak  visited  the centre of excellence on  value addition on  sorghum and mil‐lets. Dr. Pattanayak tasted the millet recipes and appreciated the efforts of IIMR  in developing, popularizing and marketing of  sorghum  and millet  products  under NAIP/INSIMP/ NFSM programme. He also addressed the IIMR staff and appreciated the excellent efforts put by the scientific fraternity  in the re‐cent  past  and  called  upon  the  IIMR  staff  for  dedication  to work to achieve the set goals on a given timeline. Training Programmes on Entrepreneurship Develop-ment of Dry land Farmers through Income Genera-tion Activities in Millets, Poultry and Sheep Farm-ing. ICAR‐Indian Institute of Millets Research organized a one‐day training cum exposure visits to beneficiaries of Farmers FIRST project. The project  is being  implemented  in Sangareddy Dis‐trict of Telangana. As a part of this project, Integrated Training programme  entitled  “Entrepreneurship  Development  of  Dry land Farmers through Income Generation Activities in Millets, Poultry  and  Sheep  Farming”  was  organized  on  10  March, 2017. A total of 50 participants from Shamshaddinpur village 

of  Raikode  Mandal,  Sangareddy  District  have  received  the benefit  of  training  cum  exposure  visits.  Trainees  visited  the millets demonstration  fields, Food Processing Lab. They  liked the  various  value  added  products  prepared  from  millets. Women  farmers  shown  interest  to  start millet  based  enter‐prises. As a part of training programmes, trainees visited the ICAR‐ DPR  to know  the scientific method of poultry  farming. Trainees were also given the knowledge on sheep farming. Dr Sangappa, Scientist, IIMR presented the overview of sorghum value  chain  project  and  experiences  and  its  impact.  Post‐Harvest and Product development, Demonstration and opera‐tion of primary processing equipment,  preparation of recipes from millets was done by Mrs. Vishala Devender, Ms. Sudha, Ms. Kiranmai, Ms. Laxmi and other staff demonstrated the Dr. Sangappa  and Mr.  P. Mukesh,  Scientists were  the  coordina‐tors for this event.  Sorghum Germplasm Field Day & One-day Training on Digitalization of Sorghum Genetic Resources Management ICAR‐Indian  Institute  of Millets  Research  successfully  organ‐ized  the “Sorghum Germplasm Field Day” on 24 March 2017

to  facilitate  the  sorghum  researchers  to  familiarize with  the new  sorghum  germplasm  diversity  collected  under  CRP  – Agrobiodiversity  project  for  sorghum.  A  total  of  70  partici‐pants attended this field visit which included 30 from All India Coordinated  Sorghum  Improvement  Centres  (AICSIP),  2 NBPGR  Scientists, and 20  IIMR  scientists. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director,  IIMR  chaired  the  inaugural  session  and  briefed 

achievements of  sorghum genetic  resources management at IIMR. The field day was inaugurated by the chief guest Dr.  RK Tyagi, Head Germplasm Conservation Division, NBPGR.  

During  Rabi  2016‐17season,  7000  accessions  of  sorghum germplasm  are being multiplied  at Hyderabad.  These  acces‐sions are now at flowering to maturity stage.  In continuation of the field day, one‐day Training on Digitalization of Sorghum Genetic  Resources  Management  was  also  conducted  on 25March 2017 at IIMR‐Hyderabad. This programme facilitated the sorghum researchers to familiarize with the available sor‐ghum germplasm at  IIMR and enabled them to know the ba‐sics of digitization  and digitalization  to  record data with  the help of an Application through a smart phone and make desir‐able  trait  specific  selection  of  germ  plasm  for  utilization  in their crop improvement program. This event was coordinated by Drs. M Elangovan and Avinash Singode and  facilitated by Mrs. A Annapurna.  Workshop-cum-training on awareness on plant vari-ety protection and digitalization of DUS characters in agricultural crops The  workshop‐cum‐training  on  awareness  on  plant  variety protection and digitalization of DUS characters  in agricultural crops  is organized on 31 March 2017  to  facilitate  the  scien‐tists,  technical assistants,  research scholars, skilled assistants to  familiarize with  the  use  of  Field  Book  for  collecting  field related  data  especially  the  DUS  characterization  data.  The programme was  inaugurated by Dr Vilas A  Tonapi, Director, Indian  Institute  of Millets  Research  (IIMR).  He  outlined  the important provisions of PPV&FRA and  the use of Field Book. There were 100 participants from IIMR, NBPGR (RS), IIRR, IIOR and  PJTSAU.   Dr  AK  Vyas,  Assistant  Director  General  (HRM) has distributed the certificates during the valedictory function and addressed  the participants. He  felt happy and congratu‐lated  IIMR  for  implementing  the Honorable  Prime Ministers vision on Digital  India. He also requested all other  ICAR  insti‐tutes to organize such Digitalization training programme using the  field book. He  appreciated  the  efforts of  IIMR  in  imple‐

menting the vision of Digital India into reality in collecting the field data using the mobile app without using the paper field book.  He  highlighted  the  importance  of  transforming  data from hard copy to soft copy through digital means. This pro‐

gramme of  IIMRs  is  complementing  the National Mission on digital  India  and  willing  to  support  similar  kind  of  training module in future. Drs. M Elangovan and Avinash Singode were the Course Coordinators of the training programme. This pro‐gramme  is  sponsored by  the Protection of Plant Varieties & Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPV&FRA).        

Hindi Workshop on Unicode Activation on computers Indian  Institute of Millets Research organized one day Hindi Workshop on Unicode Activation on computers on 30 March, 2017. All staff of  IIMR participated  in  this programme where the  implementation of Hindi  in day  to day office  correspon‐dences through the applications of Unicode activation in exist‐ing  computers. Dr. Mahesh Kumar, TO  (Hindi) explained  the tips to operate this application.  Breeder seed monitoring and farmer’s interactive meet A Team of scientists  from  IIMR‐Hyderabad monitored Breed‐ers seed production plots of sorghum parental  line C 43 at J.

groups cultivating sorghum  in rice fallow areas  in and around Sitanagaram village, East Godavari District and Attota village in Guntur  district  on  14  ‐15 March,  2017.  Overall  farmers  ex‐pressed  their  satisfaction  about  the  cultivation  of  sorghum instead  of  pulses  and  preferred  short  statured  hybrids with long panicles.  Release of Millet calendar -2017 Indian  Institute of Millets Research  in association with Sahaja Samrudha,  voluntary millets promoting   organization, Banga‐lore and NABARD  published Millet calendar ‐2017 in Hindi and 

English  languages  and  was  released  during  First  National Agripreneurs Convention organized by MANAGE, at Necklace road, Hyderabad on 7 March, 2017. Dr. SK Pattanayak, Secre‐tary Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture, GoI, released this cal‐endar along with other dignitaries on the dais.  Sorghum Farmer’s days organized at Rice fallows At Rapaaka, East Godavari District. A  Sorghum  farmer’s  day was  organized  by  ICAR‐Indian  Insti‐tute of Millets Research, Hyderabad on 2 March, 2017 at Rapa‐aka village, in Sitanagaram Mandal, East Godavari District, An‐dhra Pradesh, in collaboration with Department of Agriculture, Andhra Pradesh, Krishi Vignan Kendra of Central Tobacco Re‐search Institute, Rajahmundry at Kalavacherla village and M/s Rahi Seeds, Rajahmundry.   

In this event, more than 200 millet farmers from East Godavari district, mainly  from Rapaaka village participated. Drs. B Sub‐barayudu and Ch. Sashidhar Reddy, Scientists from ICAR‐IIMR; Mr. DV Krishna, ADA, Korukonda and Mrs. Raja Rajeswari, Ag‐ricultural Officer;  Korukonda; Mr.    Vijaya  Prasad,  KVK,  CTRI, Kalavacherla addressed the farmers on various issues including ‐ millet  cultivation practices  in uplands and  rice‐fallows, pest and disease management, value‐addition, millet health bene‐fits, promoting popularity and demand generation  for millets in urban and non‐conventional areas. The team also answered all  the  queries  raised  by  the  participants.  Farmers  also  ex‐pressed  their  satisfaction with  the  performance  of  Sorghum hybrid  CSH  16  for  getting  high  grain  yield  in  comparison  to private hybrids.   This programme was widely covered by  local print and electronic media.   Mr. G Arjuna Rao, Managing Di‐rector, M/s Rahi Seeds, Rajahmundry was  the  coordinator of this event.  

At Attota in Guntur district, AP ICAR‐Indian  Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad also or‐ganized a farmer’s day at Attota village of Guntur district on 08 

March 2017, where  IIMR has organized  field demonstration with 10 sorghum cultivars suitable for rice fallows condition. Framer’s preference was for short statured hybrids with long panicle. Dr. Ch. Sashidhar Reddy and Dr. B. Subbarayudu from ICAR‐IIMR, Mr. Srikrishnadevarayalu, ADA, Tenali, Dr. Radha Krishna,  Officer  In‐charge,  AICRP‐  Bapatla  addressed  the farmers about the benefits of sorghum cultivation in rice fal‐lows under zero tillage. Sorghum value added products were also exhibited to the farmers and  local self‐help groups. This programme was well covered by local press. 

Monitoring of DUS Testing trials – Rabi 2016-17 The monitoring of sorghum DUS Testing trial was conducted at  IIMR,  Hyderabad  held  on  20  March  2017.  Dr.  Vilas  A Tonapi, Director, IIMR monitored the trial  in the presence of Dr. Hariprasanna K, Nodal Officer, and Drs. Amasiddha B and Deepika C, Co‐Nodal officers. Dr. Aruna C, Principal Scientist (Plant Breeding) and PI, Grain Sorghum, AICRP‐Sorghum also 

attended the monitoring. Dr. Hariprasanna explained the DUS testing  for different candidate varieties  taken up along with the claimed distinct characteristics and the expression of the same.  Under  1st  year  testing  two  new  candidate  varieties (SYN‐SR‐MLR  1172  and  SYN‐SR‐DJ  4062) were  tested  along with  four  reference  varieties,  and  seven  Farmers’  varieties [Nagavi Maldandi,  Bedra,  Chikni  Lal  (Loose  Panicle), Mothi Mani Juwar, Lahan Mani Juwar, Mothi Safed Juwar and Chikni Lal  Juwar] were  tested along with M 35‐1 as  reference vari‐ety. The overall crop growth and expression of morphological characters were very good in all the candidate and reference varieties.  The Director  appreciated  the  overall  conduct  and quality  of  DUS  testing  trials.  It was  suggested  that  panicle shape  and  density  recorded  during monitoring may  be  fur‐ther confirmed at the time of harvest as that observed in ma‐jority  of  the  plants.  Apart  from  DUS  testing  trials, mainte‐nance  breeding  of  50  reference  varieties  including parental lines was also  taken up. The  report of  the monitoring  team and DUS test proformae for the candidate varieties were pre‐pared by the team.   Primary data collection visit to Almora and Bageswari districts, Uttarakhand Millets primary data collection exploration was undertaken in Almora  and  Bageswari  districts  in  Uttarakhand  during  3‐9 March  2017.  Dr.  Deep  Narayan Mukherjee  visited  the  dis‐tricts, and 120  farmers were  surveyed  for primary data  col‐lected  on  barnyard  and  finger millets.  Information was  col‐lected on various aspects such as millets production and culti‐

vation  in  these  areas  with  the  help  of  staff  of  ICAR‐Vivekananda  Parvatiya  Krishi  Anusandhan  Sansthan  (VPKAS). The farmers in these two districts revealed that the millets cul‐tivation  in  these areas could be revived  if the problems  faced by the farmers are taken care which were majorly the unavail‐ability  of  irrigation water, wild  boar  attack  and  lack  of  farm level primary processing facilities.  Transfer Indian  Institute of Millets Research offered affectionate  fare‐well  to  Dr.  Sujay  Rakshit,  Principal  Scientist,  at  IIMR  on  23 March,  2017  on  his  selection  as  Director,  Indian  Institute  of 

Maize  Research,  Ludhiana. Dr.  Vilas  A  Tonapi,  Director,  IIMR and other staff wished him a successful career in all his future endeavours. Dr. Sujay was relieved from his duties at  IIMR on 23 March, 2017 afternoon.  

Mr. Saroj Kumar Singh, Administrative Officer has been trans‐ferred  to  ICAR‐Indian  Institute of Water Management,  (IIWR)Bhubaneshwar and was relieved from his duties on 31 March,

Invited lecture Dr. M  Elangovan,  Principal  Scientist  delivered  invited  lecture on “Global Status of Millets Genetic Resources” during the two‐day National Seminar on “Recent Advances  in Plant Sciences” at  Department  of  Botany,  Annamalai  University,  Annamalai Nagar, Tamil Nadu on 22 March 2017.   

IIMR stall at First National Agripreneurs Convention - 2017 A three‐day First National Agripreneurs Convention was organ‐ized  by  National  Institute  of  Agricultural  Extension Manage‐

ment  (MANAGE)  from  7‐  9 March  2017  at  Necklace  road, Hyderabad. The convention aimed to bring all the successful Agripreneurs  from  different  parts  of  the  country  on  single platform, promote business  linkages and also  linkages with other  stakeholders’  namely  GOI,  State  governments, NABARD,  Banks,  Agri‐business  Companies,  Institutions  etc. The  exhibition  had  around  150  stalls,  and  out  of which  7 

were millet  based  stalls, which  showcased millet  technolo‐gies  and  also enabled  sale of  raw  cereals, processed millet products healthy malt powder, vermicelli, biscuits and bak‐ery products. The exhibition was  inauguratedby Dr. SK Pat‐tanayak, Secretary (Agriculture), Ministry of Agriculture, GOI. ICAR‐Indian institute of Millets research,   Hyderabad   organ‐ized eatrite millet stall to showcase processing technology of millets  and  sorghum  and millets  commercialized  products. He visited the eatrite stall, where he appreciated the efforts made by the institute in the creation of the demand for mil‐lets  through various efforts  in  the value chain development and appreciated all  the millet value added products. More‐than 1500 delegates visited our stall during the 3 days exhibi‐tion period. Ms. R. Geetha, Mrs. B. Laxmi, project staff and Dr.  Sangappa,  Scientist  at  IIMR,  Hyderabad  organized  the exhibition stall.  IIMR Stall at Rashtriya Krishi Unnati Mela, New Delhi ICAR – IIMR‐ Hyderabad, organized an exhibition stall during Krishi Unnati Mela 2017 organized at  IARI, New Delhi  from 

15  to 17 March, 2017.   IIMR  stall was visited by more  than 20000  participants  farmers,  Government  officials,  Women

from self‐help groups, students and entrepreneurs. The visitors were explained about the health benefits of millets, cultivation practices and future of millets  in  Indian food basket and sam‐ples of millet  food products distributed.   The Millet  stall was conducted by Dr. Mahesh Kumar, Technical Officer  (OL) & Sri Sunil Kumar, Senior Technical Assistant under the guidance of Dr.  Vilas  A  Tonapi, Director and Dr.  B Dayakar  Rao,  Principal Scientist, IIMR, Hyderabad.  IIMR stall at Conference on Economic Disruption - 2017 IIMR  organized millets  stall  showcasing millets  based  health foods  at  the  “Conference on  Economic Disruption”.  This pro‐gramme was organized by Confederation of  Indian  Industry  in Hyderabad on 24‐ 25 March, 2017 at HICC, Gachibowli aiming on Evolving Regional Growth Architecture and charting climate change enabling development. The exhibition was inaugurated by  Mr.  Suresh  Prabhu,  Minister  of  Railways,  Govt  of  India; other delegates were Ms Shobana Kamineni, President Desig‐nate, CII; Mr.Sathish Raman, Regional Director, CII–SR; Mr. Vik‐ram Kirloskar, Deputy Chairman, CII‐SR; Mr. Chandrajit Baner‐jee, Director General, CII; and Dr. Naushad Forbes, President, CII. Ms. R. Geetha, Mrs. B.  Laxmi, project  staff organized  the stall  and  Dr.  Sangappa,  Scientist  coordinated  this  exhibition stall.  Distinguished Visitors Dr.  Jana Kholova,  Scientist,  (Physiology),  ICRISAT, Patnacheru visited  IIMR on 24 March, 2017, to discuss the  joint collabora‐tion between ICAR‐IIMR and ICRISAT in the area of crop model‐ling for post rainy sorghum and use of modelling tools to guide the decisions   on the system  interventions. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director,  IIMR  chaired  this meeting  and Drs.CV  Ratnavathi,  S 

Ravi Kumar, R Swarnaand R Venateswarlu other scientists par‐ticipated in the meeting. It was decided let Dr. Swarna and Jana Kholova  to  come out with  a  joint proposal  for  funding  to be explored  from various agencies  like DBT, DST and other  inter‐national  funding  agencies.  Dr.  HS  Talwar,  coordinated  this meeting at IIMR.   Sh. Suhas Gopinath, CEO, Globals  Inc, Bangalore visited  IIMR on 4 March, 2017.  Sh. Suhas Gopinath is a young entrepreneur under his  leadership, Globals  Inc, has drastically grown from a small home office  to a globally  recognized enterprise offering world‐class  quality  solutions  on  Web  and  Cloud,  Enterprise Application Development,  and  Product Development  services for various industries and Government organizations. Sh. Suhas Gopinath  participated  in  millet  entrepreneurship  efforts  of 

IIMR in an interactive session with D. Vilas A Tonapi, Director and  all  the  scientists.  The deliberations were on  collabora‐tion between Globals  Inc, Bangalore and  ICAR‐IIMR. He also visited to Centre of Excellence and other facilities.

Dr AK Vyas, Assistant Director General  (HRM) Visited  IIMR on  31 March,  2017.Dr.  Vilas  A  Tonapi,  Director,  IIMR  ex‐plained him on the  institute’s research activities and on the 

issues  related  to  promotion  of  sorghum  and  millets,  and their alternate uses, Forage and sweet sorghum as a biofuel crop.  Dr.  Vyas  also  visited  Centre  of  Excellence  and  other labs.   Visitors Hands-on training for Dr. MCRHRD institute Trainees Dr. MCR Human Resource Development Institute, Hyderabad

has  organized  a  three  days  training  programme  on  “Drought Management”. As a part of this training, a group of 25 trainees with  officials  visited  the  ICAR‐  Indian  Institute  of Millets  Re‐search on 3 March, 2017  to understand  the production  tech‐nologies of drought tolerant millets. Participants were demon‐

strated  the primary and secondary processing  technologies at Centre of Excellence and displayed the value added products of millets. Trainees appreciated the millets value added products and shown keen interest to initiate small enterprises on millets products. Dr. Sangappa, Scientist, IIMR briefed about the insti‐tute mandates and activities. Later the  farmers were taken to field to show the different varieties of crops being grown in the field and their progress. Dr. Laxmi, Ms. Sudha and other Project staff of Centre of Excellence coordinated this event.  Hands-on training for ATMA Officials A hands‐on training‐cum‐visit was organized for 45 agricultural and extension officers from ATMA, Guntur on 8 March, 2017at IIMR,  Hyderabad.  Exposure  to  the  agricultural  and  extension officers on  latest  sorghum production practices  and prepara‐tion of different sorghum  food products was given. Dr. Rajen‐dra R Chapke, Principal Scientist has organized the visit. 

Farmers from Uttar Pradesh A  group  of  26  progressive  farmers  from  Pragya  Seva  Samiti, Fatehpur, and Uttar Pradesh on 18 March, 2017 visited  IIMR, Hyderabad. Dr. Rajendra R Chapke, Principal Scientist explained about research activities on sorghum and millet  improvement and production technologies of kharif sorghum. They were also exposed  to  preparation  and  processing  of  different  sorghum food products in food lab.  Karnataka Farmers A group of 15 farmers from Koppal District of Karnataka state visited  ICAR‐IIMR on 10 March, 2017 as a part of  their  study tour to Hyderabad under Agricultural Technology Management Agency  (ATMA) project of Government of Karnataka. Dr. San‐gappa, Scientist, IIMR gave overview on millets cultivation and demonstrated the primary processing at Centre of Excellence. Farmers appreciated  the efforts made by  IIMR on diversifying millet value added products. Before this, farmers visited dem‐onstration fields of IIMR and exposed to improved millets culti‐vation practices. They purchased improved quality millet seeds and  value  added  products  from  IIMR. Mrs. Vishala Devender Chief Technical Officer,  IIMR and Ms. Sudha Devi, Ms.  Laxmi, Ms.  Kiranmai  and  other  Project  staff  of  Centre  of  Excellence have facilitated this event.  

Visit to sorghum hybrids demonstration The Director,  IIMR Dr. Vilas Tonapi, visited  the research  fields of Vikky’s Agri Sciences Pvt., Ltd., and Hyderabad on 21 March, 

2017  to  perceive  the  performance  of  IIMR  grain  sorghum hybrids  being  demonstrated  by  the  company  at  the  R&D Farm,  Nandigama,  Patancheruvu.  Drs.  Aruna  and  Harip‐rasanna,  Principal  Scientists  (Plant  Breeding)  also  partici‐pated in this field visit.  

Dr. Y Yogeshwar Rao, Research Director, Vikky’s Agri Sciences showed the test hybrids and checks evaluated at the demon‐stration  block.  The  research  programmes  of  the  company with respect to parental  line development for hybrid breed‐ing was  also  explained  to  the Director.  Five  grain  sorghum hybrids (IIMR‐H1, H2, H3, H4 and H5) along with five checks viz., Hytech 3201, Nu Genes NSH‐18, VJH 540, VJH 549 and VJH 575 have been demonstrated. The IIMR hybrids showed very  good  performance  over  the  checks. Dr.  Rao  informed that hybrids with short plant height and short duration are in demand both during  rainy season and summer season. The company is targeting the area of Eastern Marathwada region of Maharashtra where summer sorghum is grown. The com‐pany has developed nearly 100 CMS and restorer  lines, and planning to use the newly developed parental lines for devel‐oping test crosses and evaluation during the ensuing season.   Memorandum of Agreements M/s Armoor Hybrid Seeds, Armoor, A memorandum of agreement between  ICAR‐IIMR and M/s Armoor  Hybrid  Seeds,  Armoor,  Nizamabad  Dt.  Telangana was  signed on 01March, 2017,  to produce and market CSH 24 MF  and  its  parental  lines. Dr Vilas A  Tonapi, Director  – IIMR on behalf of  IIMR and Mr. A Santosh Reddy, Managing
