Letter from the Chair

2013 has been a significant year for Beagles, we’ve seen the affiliation of the Beagle Association to

KUSA and Beagles numbers at shows across the country have been on the increase, we sincerely hope

that this trend continues in the forthcoming year. Sadly for the sport there have been a few isolated

incidences where the integrity of some of the exhibitors, and more importantly of a few judges, has

not been beyond reproach. It is important to keep this behaviour in perspective however as it is very

much minority behaviour and at the end of the day the only people who are fooled by it are the

perpetrators themselves. South Africa also hosted the agility world championships and yes Beagle(s)

were involved, more on this elsewhere.

Again on the negative side there have been a number of reports of registered breeders not supplying

registration papers for registered puppies they have sold, thus preventing potential exhibitors from

entering shows, apart from being dishonest & fraudulent. If this occurs purchasers of puppies do have

recourse through the KUSA complaints procedures and should not hesitate to contact the KUSA as this

is the only way to eliminate this practice. Additionally please contact us to check whether they are

members of the Association. Also most alarmingly there has been of report of a scam by a so-called

breeder in Alberton selling non-existent puppies, a family in Kwazulu Natal lost a substantial amount

of money. Both practices highlight the need for purchasers only to purchase from KUSA registered and

Beagle Association recommended breeders, that way you do have some comeback.

Membership subscriptions are now due and membership application packs have been sent out. While

there is a steady trickle of subscriptions coming in, this is a reminder to existing members to renew and

enthusiasts wishing to join, to fill in and return the membership application form together with

subscription. Anyone wanting a pack who has not received one should contact a member of the

committee, see page 1 for contact details.

Congratulations to all the winners of the various categories of the Beagle of the Year competition. We

have winners from three provinces. Trophies and prizes will be handed out at the Beagle Association

first Open Show to be held on the 26th January 2014 at Goldfields Showgrounds, country members will

receive theirs just as soon as we can get them to you. There are 15 prize categories plus the Chairman’s

special award. We currently have two trophies only, Beagle of the Year and Puppy of the Year, anybody

wishing to donate a trophy should contact the committee. Additionally anyone, members or exhibitors,

wishing to propose changes to the Beagle of the Year competition should submit their proposals to the

committee for consideration, not later than the 31st January 2014.

Our Open Show as stated above will be held on the 26th January 2014. A date for your diary, schedules

will be sent out this month. Subject to confirmation from KUSA we will have a Beagle specialist as a

judge for this our first Open Show, so please support our show.

The Beagle Association under the auspices of Northern Areas Provincial Council will be holding a breed

seminar also at Goldfields Showgrounds on the 16th June 2014. This seminar will be of interest to all

owners, breeders, exhibitors, judges as well as anyone wishing to join the judges training scheme.

Our AGM will be held at Goldfields in February. Members will be notified of the exact date.

With effect from 2014 we will be featuring Rogues Gallery, this is a photo/caption competition. Please

submit your Beagle photos with a suitably apt caption, the winning photo /caption from all entries

received will be selected by a guest judge at the year end and the winner will receive a fabulous hamper

from our sponsors. Please do not include names of dogs, people or owners. Entries will be displayed in

the newsletter and also on the website. Our website is under construction but is live, and improving all

the time so visit it occasionally. http://thebeagleassociation.co.za

What to look for in a breeder

Why you should only ever buy from registered breeders? Registered breeders are members of KUSA and

as such are bound by their rules, regulations and ethics regarding the breeding of pure bred dogs.

Unregistered breeders are unnecessarily adding to the already large pool of unwanted mongrel dogs

which frequently end up at rescue centres around the country. However you need to be aware of puppy

mills/farmers as these exist amongst registered breeders as well as amongst unregistered breeders.

Puppy farmers are volume breeders who have little regard or consideration for the basic needs & care

of their breeding bitches and puppies and who breed purely for financial gain and not for the

betterment of the breed. Breeders, like potential puppy purchasers, need to supply references.

References can be sought from specialist Breed Clubs, Veterinarians, neighbours, as well as satisfied

puppy purchasers.

Reputable registered breeders breed only to improve the breed and have a researched breeding

program based on sound breeding principles working within the existing breed standard. Reputable

registered breeders do not seek to experiment with or change the breed according to their own

personal preferences for colour, size, shape, temperament, etc. Dogs that are registered with KUSA have

a traceable and verifiable pedigree and are indeed what they say they are . Any papers that are supplied

with unregistered dogs are worthless as they cannot be authenticated.

Chose a breeder who is quite happy for you to visit their premises and view their breeding stock, which

should be happy, healthy and sound. Kennels and runs should be clean, free from excrement, have a

plentiful water supply, be light and airy, shaded, of sufficient size to allow the dogs to exercise freely,

with undercover and sheltered sleeping areas. Many of the smaller breeders house their breeding stock

within their homes thus ensuring that their dogs and puppies are well socialised.

The breeder you select should be knowledgeable about their selected breed, the breed standard, its

history, function, needs, both psychological and physical, of the dogs, pros and cons of the breed,

genetic heritage, testing available and most importantly temperament.

Never buy a puppy that has not been seen at least once by a qualified veterinarian, that does not have a

veterinary record and microchip identification papers. Due to administration delays, registration papers

are usually not yet available when the puppy is 8 weeks old, but ask for proof that they have been

submitted to the KUSA. The average registration delay thereafter is four weeks.

Some breeders impose breeding restrictions and insist on purchase contracts, ensure you understand

the implications of these. Shop around and speak to as many breeders as possible and be discerning and

sift the wheat from the chaff.

FCI World Agility Championships 2013

Submitted by Carolyn Chelchinsky

The World Agility Championships (AWC) are organised annually in Europe and the winners gain the title

‘World Agility Champion’. This was the first time in the history of the event that it left the European

continent. South Africa was honoured to host the event but unfortunately due to the distance, the costs

involved and a number of other factors the teams attending were much smaller than usual. The

countries that attended were Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, USA, Norway and

South Africa. The event was held 11-13 October at The Dome in Northgate, JHB.

Dog agility is a dog sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both

time and accuracy. Dogs run off-leash with no food or toys as incentives, and the handler can touch

neither dog nor obstacles. Consequently the handler's controls are limited to voice, movement, and

various body signals, requiring exceptional training of the animal and coordination of the handler.

In its simplest form, an agility course consists of a set of standard obstacles laid out by a judge in a

design of his or her own choosing in an area of a specified size. Depending on the type of competition,

the obstacles may be marked with numbers indicating the order in which they must be completed.

There can be jumps, tubes, as well as contact obstacles like the A-frame, See-Saw and Dog walk. Courses

are complicated enough that a dog could not complete them correctly without human direction. In

competition, the handler must assess the course, decide on handling strategies, and direct the dog

through the course, with precision and speed equally important. Many strategies exist to compensate

for the inherent difference in human and dog speeds and the strengths and weaknesses of the various

dogs and handlers. Agility caters for many breeds and sizes of dogs but working breeds like Border

Collies excel at the sport. There are very few beagles that compete in agility, because of the obedience

and focus on handler that it requires, however it is possible.

As this is a beagle newsletter I thought I would give you feedback on the wonderful beagle that

competed at the AWC. Piet (registered name-Beauty Succession’s Parker Jones) is a

beautiful tan and white, male beagle from Germany and was born 13 Jan 2009. When

asked whether he travelled well to SA, his owner Johanna Mueller said that he was

perfectly calm and slept in his crate the whole time.

Page 10: IN FULL CRY NO 3 - The Beagle Association.co.zathebeagleassociation.co.za/data/documents/In-Full-Cry-no-3-docx.pdf · Audrey Hauptfleisch audreyhauptfleisch@royal-canin.co.za 082

9

Piet performed excellently at the event finishing 6th in the

Individual agility (contact)

round, 9th in the individual

jumping round and 5th overall

Individual Medium dog. He also

assisted the German team in

coming 2nd in the Medium

category. He was not the fastest dog but was very consistent and ran

a number of excellent clear rounds. Like most beagles he is very

food driven and that is what Johanna uses to train him.

The South African teams did us proud, finishing on the podium in each category. They finished 2nd in the

Large, 3rd in the Medium and Small categories. A special mention goes to Annaret Meintjies! She was in

the Medium team with her Kooikerhondjie and in the Large team with her Border Collie but the

fantastic thing is that she started agility with her 2 beagles, Emma and Levi.

On the first day of the event there was a KUSA affiliated show, The SA Cup, in

which 2 beagles competed, Zoe and Bernie. These 2 beagles are in their first

year of competing and did really well for their first time at such an event.

Neither dog was placed but ran well despite the new surface underfoot, the

lights, cameras and crowds.

So you see, it is possible to do agility with

beagles! It just takes a lot of work and patience.

National Beagle of the Year Competition

The National Beagle of the Year is a competition to determine the Beagle that has won the most Best of

Breeds & Reserve Best of Breeds during the course of any one show year, it is not a competition to

determine the dog that has beaten the most other dogs and differs from other competitions in that it

takes into account Reserve Best of Breeds. In addition to the Beagle of the Year there are various other

categories which are validated by other KUSA recognised awards, eg Veteran, Junior, Puppy, Baby

Puppy, Neutered Dog, as well as recognition given to Sires, Dams & Breeders of the top dogs. The Beagle

of the Year is free and all Beagles exhibited at Championship Shows throughout South Africa

automatically qualify

The points allocation can be obtained from the Chairman by interested parties

Please note that an unauthorised version of these leaderboards is being displayed on another

website. Any discrepancies between the two is of no concern of the Beagle Association. The Beagle

Association does an internal audit to ensure accuracy of these leaderboards according to the points

allocation, and based on these results the awards will be made at the year end, however should any

exhibitor have a query about their dogs points please contact us and we will check that no error has

occurred.
