ur gingerbread men…
Our future bakers are hard at work!
The Preparatory Year One students went on their first learning journey - a trip to the 6 Senses Cooking Studio to make gingerbread cookies! When we arrived at the studio, we were greeted by the aroma of freshly baked cookies and the children could not wait to get started. First things first, they had to wash their hands with soap. Then they were organised according to their colour groups, with each table being assisted by a teacher or a parent helper.
The children were involved in a cooperative effort of putting sugar, butter and eggs into the mixing bowl, taking turns to beat the mixture and having a go at being “bakers” for the day.For safety reasons, the children prepared the dough for baking but the real bakers took over the baking process, leaving the children with the best part - decorating about 15 big and small gingerbread m e n w i t h i c i n g , M & M s a n d chocolate spr inkles . Many “dressed” their gingerbread men with clothes and boots using icing!T h r o u g h t h i s b a k i n g class, our children learnt important mathematical skills of estimation and m e a s u r e m e n t , p l u s skills related to language, observation and experimentation. All in all, it was a fun-filled dayfor our PY1 students!

It’s been 6 months since the secondary section moved to Wanchai. For the first time our curriculum features Chinese Culture & Literature and a language arts approach to the teaching of English. Periods were also given to Study Skills and Self Study. We hope that these will enable our students to become effective learners. C om mu n it y se r v ic e c on t i n ue s to b e a n important part of our school programme. Special activit ies have been planned for the festive season, in addition to the usual service activities. Service learning is also a key component of our new student leadership framework. On 6th January we had our first Staff-Student Games. It was a great opportunity for the students to see the usually serious staff in a different l ight, and brought the school community closer. We visited the primary school campus to speak about life in the secondary school to P5 and P6 students. In early February the P6 students visited the Wanchai campus to get a first-hand feel of life in secondary school. Regarding IB authorisation, SIS was accorded ‘Candidate School’ status by the IB Organisation in Dec 2009. We are now halfway through the authorisation process, and should be granted the status of ‘IB World School’ in 2011, in time for the implementation of the Diploma Programme in Aug later that year. Our secondary school building project is on track and we look forward to moving into the new campus for the start of the 2011/12 academic year. The secondar y school st i l l has room to grow, and with the support of staff, parents and students we will attain the same good reputation as the primary school and establish a name for ourselves in Hong Kong. Success Inspires Success!

S3L cheered on their TTTS students
A wonderful day ended with a wonderful feast
The TTTS students impressed us with a choreographed version of Do Re Mi
Everyone enjoyed a round of musical chairs
The Christmas CIP was a fun day for all!
SIS students shared their musical talents with the TTTS students
Students from S1H and TTTS worked together to create beautiful Christmas ornaments
The TTTS students enjoyed their surprise gift hampers
Last December, the Secondary Section invited 50 students from a local special education school, Tsui Tsin Tong School (TTTS), to join us for a very different Christmas celebration. The event was organised as part of the school’s efforts to contribute to the local community. It also provided our students the opportunity to interact with and gain a better understanding of teenagers with
special needs. Before the event, an assembly talk by TTTS staff was conducted to educate our
students on the characteristics and needs of special education teenagers. After a month of planning and preparation, our students sang, danced and performed for the
guests. They also organised activities for the TTTS students such as a game of frisbee and the making of Christmas ornaments. At the end of the event, the TTTS students were
treated to tasty goodies and presented with gift hampers. The TTTS students were delighted by the warmth and kindness of our students. Likewise,
we enjoyed the concert items presented by the TTTS students showcasing their talents. It was a memorable Christmas celebration for both TTTS and SIS students.
“The TTTS students are just like us. They play hard and know how to have fun. I feel contented that I could share the joy of Christmas with the TTTS students and that they have enjoyed the celebrations.” Ching Tze Lam, S3B
“I felt very nervous at first when I explained the game as they did not seem to understand me. So I spoke more slowly and clearly. When I saw them nodding with understanding, I felt very encouraged and happy.” Justin Chan, S2G
“I was a chaperon and helped to take care of the TTTS students. We had a great time together, playing games and talking. I feel that the event was very meaningful.” Yap Melissa, S1T

Problem Solving activities at the Leadership Camp
“It’s hard to lead a cavalry charge if you think you look funny on a horse.” Adlai Stephenson
Sixty-eight students are currently involved in the Leadership Programme at SIS. We know them as ‘Prefects’ and they are seen around the school performing their daily duties. The aim of the Leadership Programme is to prepare all our Prefects for their role and to give them an insight into the nature of leadership. In order to achieve this aim, the P5 and P6 Prefects began the year by attending a weekly training programme for four weeks. This included a visit from a highly respected writer and Leadership Trainer, who
encouraged all to see leadership as a means of “making other people better”. Positive conflict resolution and effective communication were the
other key elements of this. Additionally, there was
a n o v e r n i g h t t r a i n i n g camp led by the Student
Council members from the SIS Secondar y School. The
problem-solving activities allowed the participants an insight into the collaborative and creative nature of effective problem-solving.The Prefects’ Investiture in late October was an opportunity for parents, pupils and teachers alike to recognise and celebrate the value of the prefects to the school community. Since then, the Prefects have been gradually raising their prof i le whi le developing their leadership skills further. At the PTA Christmas Fair, they were able to test their collaborative and organisational skills. The two stalls run by the Prefects proved to be very popular and it was particularly pleasing to see how all logistical problems were solved efficiently and without any significant adult intervention. Although we are only half way through the year, all the Prefects have faced a number of challenges so far. They are finding out what t h e y p o s s e s s a f l a i r f o r a n d identifying areas in which they need to develop their skills further. Whatever it is, they are all finding out how they look on a horse.

This year was the first time for me to be a prefect. I think that being a prefect is a challenge to many of us, one of the reasons being that some of us rarely speak up in class. It is hard for us to tell other students what to do and what not to do, especially if you do not know them. On the other hand, I think being a prefect is quite fun, as there are many activities that we get to experience, such as the prefects’ writing competition, the prefects’ training sessions and the prefects’ camp. Being a prefect this year has taught me a lot of important things, such as respecting others as well as yourself and caring for others and their feelings. For example, when you need to talk to others you should not be proud and talk to them in a proud voice just because you are prefect. It is important to talk to them respectfully so that you will be respected by them for being a good role model. Being a prefect is not just about being a leader, but also about learning to be humble.

Sylvain Gilbert, a hidden child who survived the Holocaust, said that the responsibility of remembering the Holocaust is being passed down to the next generation. It will be their job to stand up for what is right. The next generation that Sylvain speaks of includes our students at SIS, and we are preparing them for this role through education. With a cross-curricular unit of study in Secondary 2 history and English spanning twelve weeks, guest speakers, and a display of featured books in the library, we are offering a multifaceted view of the Holocaust.Beyond studying the horrifying facts of the Holocaust, the Secondary 2 students also analysed pr imar y sources that focused o n G e r m a n p r o p a g a n d a . T h i s e x e r c i s e opened their eyes to the manipulation and dangers of stereotyping. It also helped them critically assess the actions of the common German people. In their English classes, the Secondary 2 students added to their understanding of the Holocaust through the fictional account of one girl who finds herself being rounded up for “relocation,” a euphemism for being sent to a concentration camp. The Devil’s Arithmetic allowed the students to empathize with a character their own age and made the study of the Holocaust more tangible. The entire Secondary school gathered to listen to Fumiko Ishioka talk about Hana’s Suitcase on 25 November 2009. Fumiko recounted her
quest to discover more information about Hana Brady, the name on a suitcase that was loaned to her Tokyo Holocaust Research Center by the Auschwitz Museum. After many months of sending letters, making phone calls, and a visit to the Theresienstadt prison camp, Fumiko was able to locate Jorge Brady, Hana’s older brother, who had survived the camps. Through this event, the students were able to connect with one individual child and see how the loss of her life affected so many other people. On 27 January 2010, the officially designated United Nations Holocaust Memorial Day, six Secondary 2 students led the school in a simple ceremony during morning assembly, remembering the victims of the Holocaust and other 20th centur y genocides. Later that afternoon, the students listened to a talk given by Sara Pecenac. She told how her Muslim family rescued a Jewish family in Sarajevo during World War II . Almost fifty years later, that same Jewish family helped Sara and her family escape the Bosnian ethnic cleansing. The guest speakers and the focus of the lessons in class not only helped the SIS students to understand the Holocaust and ensure it never happens again but also helped to get them to think for themselves and stand up for what is right in any situation. In the process, we hope to prepare them to become leaders who can guide our world toward a more peaceful and just future. “We have to learn about the past so that in the future we will not make the same mistakes again. Our actions shape our future.” Nikki Wei (S2W)

Understanding the One-to-One Laptop Programme at Wanchai campus
Educational Software on sale
Acquiring the light-weight Macbooks
In December 2009, SIS launched a Macbook School Purchasing Scheme that enabled parents to purchase Macbooks at significant discounts. The Macbooks are pre-installed with relevant software applications bought at school bulk purchase prices. This scheme was initiated because SIS plans to become a One-to-One Laptop School by the 2011/12 academic year. This means that all secondary students will use their own laptops in school each day as their personal learning device.By launching the purchasing scheme now, parents who have children entering Secondary One in 2011/12 will make a more informed choice when they buy laptops for their children. This scheme will guide parents to buy a suitable laptop for school purposes. SIS has chosen to work with Apple to offer a One-to-One Laptop Programme at the Secondary level for a number of reasons:
Apple offers the school a total solution which includes: hardware, software and additional services which include planning, implementation, professional training, curriculum design and technical support.
Apple is committed to advancing teaching and learning for K-12 education with 30 years of research and development.
Apple’s iLife suite is designed to unleash our learners’ creativity and develop their critical thinking skills.
Mac OS X is stable and more secure than other operating systems, and is also free from viruses and spyware.
Mac OS X can run applications such as Microsoft Office and is compatible with most Windows files and applications.
The first batch of students who had made their orders collected their laptops on 28 January at the Wanchai campus. The second wave of this school purchasing scheme will be launched in December 2010 and the third will be in July 2011.

Limited space, unlimited possibilities… This is the theme we are focusing on for the next one and a half years at Wanchai
campus. For PE lessons, new and modified games and activities will be taught, and students will be given opportunities to collaborate and work in teams
as they begin to appreciate the value of integrity, sportsmanship and perseverance. New CCAs which promote active participation have
been started in order to maximize the space available and to cater to students’ interest. These include Outdoor
Education and Aikido.
Aikido provides a platform for students who wish to develop a strong character, perseverance and a desire to overcome challenges.

Introducing the New Subject Head for Science and Health Education by Mr Chin Joong Fui
I have had an enjoyable time teaching Mathematics and Science at SIS for the past two and a half years. During this time I have coordinated a number of programmes for the Science Department including:
Lower Primary Science Programme (for P1 and 2) Life Education Activity Programme (LEAP) Science Project Work (for P5 students) Drug Awareness Programme (for P6 students)
Knowledge and technology are growing exponentially in the twenty-first century. To prepare our students for the challenges of the future, it is imperative for them to become scientifically literate. This means that the Science education that students receive should go beyond that of acquiring scientific facts. It has to include the cultivation of the Scientific Method, curiosity for the unknown and the development of an inquiring mind.Over the years, the Science Department at SIS has put in place many initiatives to develop inquiry-based learning in our students. I seek to work with all stakeholders to inspire our students with the wonderment that comes through the learning of Science.
