STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE Parents are reminded that the school and the Education Department does not provide personal accident insurance for students. Parents and guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs. Student accident insurance policies are available from some commercial insurers. These cover a range of medical expenses not covered by Medicare or private health insurance. The school cannot advise parents/guardians on whether to purchase a student accident policy or which policy to purchase. It is recommended that they seek assistance in this matter with their insurance broker or find a suitable personal accident insurer in the Yellow Pages or online. PERSONAL GOODS BROUGHT TO SCHOOL Personal property is sometimes brought to school by students, staff and visitors. This can include mobile phones, electronic games, sporting equipment and cars parked on school premises. Neither the school nor the Education Department holds insurance for personal property brought to schools and have no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property. All members of the school community are reminded that they should not bring any unnecessary items to school.
NAMING YOUR BELONGINGS We remind parents that all items of clothing should be labelled so the items can be returned to the rightful owner if they are found. Text books and all items of uniform should also be labelled with the student’s name and Home Group. NEWLOOK PFA! (PARENTS AND FRIENDS ASSOCIATION) If you have a student at the College you are automatically a member of our parent community, also called the PFA (Parents and Friends Association). We are a parent-run group of people who support the school and each other for the benefit of the students. Our first meeting for the year is on Thursday 14
th March at 7.00pm in the school staff room.
We have lots of ideas for this year and would love to have you and your ideas as well. You may be part of a committee or attend just for interest. It’s fun and informative. Come and see! Meetings finish at approximately 8.30pm. Contact person is: Jen Riley, Mobile 0421 315 935. SCHOOL PHOTOS School photos are being taken on Tuesday 26
th February. Payment on the day is
through filling out the Credit Card Section or with cash to the photographer. These are the only payment options. All students received the envelopes for their school photographs last week. Students should ensure they bring the photo envelopes with their order on the day. Correct money is required by the photographers and the school is not able to provide change. Orders may also be made online with the company www.schoolphoto.com.au. Jumpers will not be worn in the photo. All students will leave their jumpers in the classroom when they are called to the gym for their class photo. Please ensure that jumpers and all other items of school uniform are labelled with the student’s name. Students in Year 7A - 7G who are timetabled for Sport Ed on Tuesday afternoon will have their photos taken in their PE uniform.
LEADERSHIP ASSEMBLY 2013
On Wednesday 20th
February, Gleneagles broke an all
time record comfortably accommodating over 1300
students and staff in the Gym for our first whole School
Assembly in honour of Student Leadership in 2013.
All students applying for College Captain positions had to
respond to a number of selection criteria and when
shortlisted were interviewed by panels made up of two
staff and two students. It is confronting for anybody,
students and adults, to negotiate a formal interview
process and candidates also had to get a teacher who
knew them well, to respond to a number of questions as
their referee.
It takes courage and effort to give these things a go! You
are judged by staff and your peers and a number of
students obviously miss out on a position and are left
feeling disappointed and hurt. It’s important to learn
how to deal with these situations, as in life we are all
confronted with missing out, so learning how to process
these feelings and then bounce back is an essential and
valuable skill to have! Students apply for leadership roles
for a range of reasons, the real challenge is how they
successfully manage themselves once in the role.
It is much easier to criticise and do nothing than it is to
speak up and be involved even if it means making
mistakes. At the Assembly we acknowledged the
appointments of all our School and House Captains and
presented them with badges and blazers.
Student Leaders have a significant presence in many
aspects of school life, they present regularly at
assemblies, play a valuable role in the organisation of
many school events and activities and most importantly
represent Gleneagles in the community.
Other leadership opportunities are available in SAC -
Student Activity Committee and Student Voice. Recently
students were invited to apply for either of these
committees and were presented with badges at the
assembly. We have over 40 students involved across
both committees, which is a wonderful reflection of
student involvement!
Being involved in any of these roles, develops skills that
you can successfully use throughout your life and we
congratulate all students who were selected for a
leadership position for 2013.

ART CLUB
The Gleneagles Art Club is a lunchtime program that provides students with the opportunity to engage in sharing and creating their own art. Students are welcome to bring their own sketch books/work from home as well as participate in creative skill/craft based activities beyond those offered in regular art classes. The new program offers a space to be creative as well as range of activities to improve student’s skills, a chance for them to express their creativity and gain inspiration from other students. The club is open to students of any year level, as well as providing a space for VCE students to work on folio tasks or gain some guidance in their work. The club is starting on Wednesday, 27
th February and
runs weekly. Encourage your children to come and give it a go!

MUSICAL NOTES On Tuesday, 19
th February, Gleneagles students were
treated to a fantastic performance by the ensemble ‘Shrewd Brass’ organised through Musica Viva. Below is a student’s account of the demonstration. “Today a brass band came in and demonstrated some instruments such as the trumpet, french horn, trombone and tuba. They played songs like the ‘Pink Panther’ and ‘Star Wars’ but what I liked most was how they showed us the instruments. They made it educational but funny so it didn’t get boring at all. My favourite part was when the guy with the trombone put a boxing glove on his instrument and punched (lightly) at the guy next to me. Altogether it was a great experience”.
By Cooper Barrientos, 7H The aim of the incursion was to introduce Year 7 students to a variety of brass instruments and show the value in learning instruments throughout the school life. While many students have now opted to enrol in the Music Program this year, there are still vacancies for brass instruments. Students wishing to learn a brass instrument are urged to either see Mrs Schueler at school or parents can contact the school on 9708 1319. The school can provide instruments for hire at very reasonable rates.

VALENTINE’S DAY POETRY COMPETITION The winner of the 2013 Valentine’s Day poetry writing competition is Aria Sunga with her wonderful “Teddy Bear” poem.
“…..It listens but doesn’t understand. Eyes wide open, but can’t see. It’s all she’s got, It’s not a lot, it’s her Teddy Bear”
Fiona Ku wrote about her love for dance, and Sue Tominiko wrote about the love and the loss felt after her father’s death. Both students received an honourable mention. I would like to thank all those students who contributed their pieces of writing this year. We had some fantastic poems and it was a hard job picking out a winner. Lynne Moller, Library Coordinator
