IMPORTANCE OF JUNCTION BOXES IN WEIGH BRIDGES AND THE BENEFITS OF INTELLIGENT JUNCTION BOXES IMPORTANCE OF JUNCTION BOXES The time and tested approach to the wiring of the load cells in a weighbridge is to use a junction box from which a cable runs to each load cell. Certain manufacturers have more recently come out with a “new innovation” of junction-less load cells with each load cell having a cable in and a cable out linking all load cells in a circular circuit. This “innovation” is in fact a cost saving strategy with the following negative effects on reliability and down time: • Cable connections are the place where moisture and dirt can enter a load cell. Double cables mean double connectors and double trouble. • Because the load cells are connected in a circular circuit, when one load cell goes down the whole system goes down. • Fault-finding is a lengthy process as each load cell has to be tested to find out which one is bringing the system down, something that is avoided by having a junction box. INTELLIGENT JUNCTION BOXES The only intelligent junction box approved for trade use in South Africa is the Bilanciai D-Link junction box. The Bilanciai D-Link “intelligent” junction box is used to convert standard analogue load cell system to digital out put while at the same time storing calibrations so that load cells can be changed out rapidly and reverse calibrated without having to have a test truck on site. This reduces down time significantly.
