Advances in technology have led to a debate of how we would define an audience. Generally a large group of people reading the same thing at the same time is outdated and audiences are now seen as ‘fragmented.’

New media has enabled writers/producers to collect demographics, which can tell them the age, gender, ethnicity and class of their audiences.

People now have a wider choices of how they view films. Subscription sites such as Netflix have a vast library of films at a pay monthly cost. It is also now possible to watch films illegally online

through streaming websites. This creates problems of copyright breaching and it causes the film to lose money as people are not paying to watch it at a cinema, on DVD, etc.
