Instead, we remember people and times of importance in church history. We give glory to God and praise Him for those who have pointed us to Christ through the ages. In October alone, there are 11 people that we remember (some of them combined on the same day) as well as remembering Hymn writers on a certain day. Near the end of October, we also celebrate Reformation day. While Reformation day is historically remembered on Oct 31st, well celebrate it as a congregation on Oct 27th (the Sunday before). We talk about the Reformation all of the time, but its important to remember why we do so. The Reformation is not about Martin Luther. Its about Jesus. Its not about Germans. Its about Jesus. Its not about the greatness of various men. Its about the mercy of Christ. Even though there were men before Luther who had tried to get the attention of the church to look back to Christ, Luther was in the right place at the right time to be used by God to get the churchs attention. Too often, we remember that the Reformation has to do with Jesus, but we get distracted by Martin Luther...Martin Luther...and if I forgot to mention him. ...Martin Luther. That was the farthest thing from Luthers desire and yet, if were not careful, our attention may be misplaced. When we think of the Reformation we give thanks to God that the false Gospel that had been so prevalent was exposed for the lie that it was. Man cannot buy or work his way into heaven. Instead, our only hope or peace is in the grace and mercy of Christ. Apart from the unmerited favor of Christ we only have sin, death, and the devil looking us in the face. Praise God that he used simple, sinful human beings to point the rest of us simple sinful human beings back to Christ. Every day we fix our eyes upon Him and upon His promises of forgiveness and eternal life. While we remember the event in church history when the church was being re-formed around the Word of Jesus, we remember that Jesus gives Himself to us still to mold us and shape us as we walk in this life (Rom. 8:29). Blessings on your day!

From Our Administrative Pastor…

Greetings in Christ, It’s hard to believe it’s already October! It always seems that October is when the year starts to kick into high gear. June, July, August, and September all have various activities going on, but October is when we start the busy time of year. The city has a variety of “Fests,” people are working their way out of “summer vacation mode” and the church year starts to fill up with various bigger holidays. If you look in the front of your hymnal you’ll see a list of names and events that the church commemorates throughout the year. We don’t pray to these various people or worship these various events. While Reformation day is historically remembered on Oct 31st, we’ll celebrate it as a congregation on Oct 27th (the Sunday before). We talk about the Reformation all of the time, but it’s important to remember why we do so. The Reformation is not about Martin Luther. It’s about Jesus. It’s not about Germans. It’s about Jesus. It’s not about the greatness of various men. It’s about the mercy of Christ. Too often, we remember that the Reformation has to do with Jesus, but we get distracted by Martin Luther...Martin Luther...and if I forgot to mention him. ...Martin Luther. That was the farthest thing from Luther’s desire and yet, if we’re not careful, our attention may be misplaced. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:10, NIV

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Immanuel, As we get closer to Reformation Day (Oct. 31), we thank God for blessing his Church with his precious Word and the truths found there. One of the great truths of God’s Word rediscovered by Martin Luther during the Reformation period is that being made right with God is God’s work entirely. Luther was taught that heaven and eternal life with God were bestowed on the person who did enough good works. According to this teaching, even with a fair amount of good works, the average person wouldn’t go straight to heaven. He’d spend a considerable amount of time working off his sins in purgatory. Salvation was something you did and earned. Yet through his study of God’s Word, Luther discovered that salvation is a free gift of God brought about by Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection. This gift is received when a person trusts in Jesus as his Savior (justification by grace through faith in Christ). What’s more, trust or faith in Jesus is also a gift created by the Holy Spirit using God’s Word and Baptism. It’s like you and I are sheep. Sheep that wandered away from the safety of the flock and the shepherd. Sheep stuck in the desert and about to die from the elements and our own stupidity. But the devotion and love of our Good Shepherd Jesus compelled him to come to our rescue. He gave his all to save us. The sheep couldn’t come to the shepherd, so the shepherd came to them and brought them into the shelter of his fold. The entire distance between God and man was covered by God. The combined efforts of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit were used to bridge the gap between sinner and salvation. The Father gave his Son; the Son atoned for all our sins; the Holy Spirit opened the eyes of our minds to see and trust the Savior. So, brothers and sisters, when you’re tempted to doubt God’s love for you, when you’re tempted to doubt your salvation, remember John’s powerful words in 1 John 4:10: “This is love. Not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” Remember these words, take them to heart, and rejoice in the salvation God has given you as a free gift. Happy Reformation Day! Love in Christ,

From Our Associate Pastor… A Note from Our Music Director...

Reformation Music...

Sunday, October 27th will find us celebrating Reformation at Immanuel. “A Mighty Fortress” will be one of the congregational hymns sung during the service. Along with the organ accompaniment, instrumentalists will add much to the beauty and depth of this familiar hymn. I look forward to hearing the congregation boldly sing the words to each of the verses. The early service on that Sunday will have both the Adult Choir and Agape Ringers singing/ringing. The choir will be singing “For Faith, We Praise You, Lord” by Starke and Hildebrand. This piece was commissioned for the 150th anniversary of Concordia Publishing House. The tune for this piece is "VERITY" and the word “verity” is also used in the selection.

For us, O Christ, we pray, That we with clarity. May also in our day Hold fast Your verity-- Look on our world with mercy still; Pour out Your grace, Your peace, good will, And with Your zeal, O Lord, us fill! The bell choir will play a “Meditation on Thaxted” arr. by Sondra Tucker. As you hear this piece, you may find yourself inwardly singing the words to LSB 941 We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God.

We praise You and acknowledge You, O God to be the Lord, The Father everlasting, by all the earth adored. To You all angel powers cry aloud, the heavens sing, The cherubim and seraphim their praises to You bring: "O holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth; Your majesty and glory fill the heavens and the earth!" (vs 1) The late service will find the 3rd through 8th Grade Sunday School Choir singing “Splendor and Honor.” This is one of the hymns found in our hymnal: LSB 950 from the "Liturgical Music" section. Each verse brings to light the praise to be given to our God, the true Lamb, our Savior and with the praise we offer...we are called into His service.

Praised be the true Lamb, slain for our redemption, By whose self off'ring we are made God's people: A priestly kingdom from all tongues and nations, Called to God's service. (vs 2) All of the music which will be provided for this celebratory Sunday will reflect "God's Word" as our heritage and His constant presence in our lives to whom we give HONOR and GLORY! In closing, I share the following quote with you this month: Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. (Martin Luther)

We are settling into the new school year. Students are getting to know one another and learning how to play, work and interact with others. We are learning manners bit by bit. To the surprise of many, sharing and taking turns does not come naturally. Saying, “Excuse me” when trying to cross in someone’s path does not always come with the patience to wait for that person to respond or move out of the way. These skills are a learning process that takes time to master. It seems that we have it all figured out by Friday. But, for some reason we need to start over on Monday. That is the life of a preschooler. We are currently talking about the story of Joseph and dealing with emotions such as jealousy and anger. We have role

played forgiveness and discussed how forgiveness feels for both the forgiver and the forgiven. Pray for us as we continue studying our ABC’s and 123’s. We will soon start up our Student of the Week program. It is always wonderful to have our church family pray for the Student of the Week and his/her family. Thank you for all of your prayers throughout the school year. Thank you to all who have made supply donations for the classroom. You will find the donation box in the narthex, along with a wish list of items needed. We have also set up an Amazon wish list that you may visit.

Peace to all. – Linda Polansky

An Update from Our Missionary Partners

Funke News: That the Works of God Might be Displayed There are some questions we can’t answer: Why must one mother struggle to find resources for two children who are differently-abled, while another mother births children who can see, walk, and play without extra assistance? Why do some have easy access to quality schools, while others walk miles to schools where the teachers may or may not show up? Why are some born into poverty while others are born into privilege? Life seems so unfair sometimes. Yet, this month we were reminded that even in the tough parts of life, or maybe especially in the challenges of life, the works of God are displayed. We give thanks for each and every work of God. New Missionaries to Tanzania We are still on the lookout for more new missionaries to Tanzania. Do you know any teachers (preschool, elementary, or high school), nurses, doctors, chaplains, social workers, DCEs, deaconesses, computer gurus, agricultural specialists, or childcare workers who might be interested in serving in Tanzania? If so, please download the one-page descriptions of these opportunities at www.globallutheranoutreach.com/blog/Funke and/or email us at [email protected]. This is a wonderful place to live and work. :-) Our Sister School in Mwanza On August 14, we had the joy of seeing all of the progress on the new kitchen at Mwanza Lutheran Secondary School. Thank you again to St. John Lutheran Church in Cypress, TX for making this possible! The diocese has now hired a headmaster, accountant, and several teachers, and will fully open in January 2020. The diocese still needs $2,600 to finish the roof of the kitchen. If you are interested in helping this school get off the ground, you can make an online donation by pressing the “GIVE” button at www.globallutheranoutreach.com/blog/MwanzaSchoolProject/and writing the donation amount next to Projects—”Funke: Mwanza School.” Or you can write a check to “Global Lutheran Outreach” and put “Funke: Mwanza School” in the memo line and send it to Global Lutheran Outreach, 6709 Ficus Drive, Miramar, FL, 33023. We continue to pray that God will use this school to bless the lives of many generations of students. New Home for Vulnerable Children We recently received word that our diocese will soon receive funding to build a home for vulnerable children on our school grounds. Praise the Lord! In preparation, Linda traveled on August 23 with our school’s headmaster, assistant headmaster, and two deaconesses to see two family-style children’s homes in the Mwanza area. It was an inspiring trip, and we look forward to sharing more about this exciting new ministry in the months to come! In Other News Eric continues teaching computer classes, assisting in national exam registrations, typing exams, training teachers in how to use his gradebook program, and compiling grades. Linda taught a “Lessons in the Movies” class and continues to homeschool our kids. Linda’s mother brought some new books for the school’s library, and the library now has ceiling board. School will close for a two-week break at the beginning of September, and we look forward to the break. Our car, unfortunately, continues to have problems. We have spent over $2,500 on it since January, and it has been eating away at our family’s budget. Please pray that these most recent repairs last. In happier news, another mother dog has given birth to six adorable puppies on our property. We had no idea we were opening a canine maternity home, but here we are. :-) Life continues to surprise us, and we continue to delight in how God works through it all.
