APÓSTOL DE CALIFORNIA XVII [Apostle of California] On June 22, I had occasion to pray at the tomb of the “Apóstol de California,” as the inscription reads on his tomb, in front of the altar at the Carmel Mission. The inscription goes back to his burial and the recognition early on of his heroic work. Within a year, Fr. Palou wrote the first biography, and it has been said that there have been more words written about Serra than any other person in California history. His statue graces the Capitol building in Washington DC [along with Ronald Reagan, they are the two representatives from California]. Years ago I found an inscription on the exterior wall of Carmel Mission in the cemetery. Someone scratched it into the stone and it reads: “Alebemos santo Dios loque estan y seran loque somos” It is also found on a commemoration of the many Indians who have been buried at the mission and of whom we have no knowledge. It is also painted on the interior wall of the Church. So far no one has been able to explain how it got there or even what it means. Translating literally it means: “We praise the holy God, that which they are and they shall be, that which we are.” It suggests to me the doctrine of Theosis, as the Greeks call it, that is divinization, reflecting the frequent phrase from the Fathers of the Church “Christ became a man that man might become God.” It recognizes that in God who is now and will be, we also are. In the communion of Saints, we partake of the Divine Nature and, thereby, are given immortality. Saint Junipero Serra embodies that truth and that hope. St. Junipero, pray for us.

Birthright Baby Bottle Fundraiser

Birthright of Brentwood is a Pro-Life crises pregnancy counseling and support center

located across the street from Liberty H.S. in downtown Brentwood . We are an all-volunteer

organization that helps approximately 500 women and families annually. We provide free

confidential pregnancy testing, counseling, family mediation, assistance with medical, legal and housing needs, and baby clothing and other

supplies for women and families in need. On the weekend of January 23 and 24 we will be

handing out baby bottles after each mass at IHM. We ask that you take one (or more), fill it with coins, bills or checks and return it to IHM at

a mass during the month of February. You may also drop off full bottles at the church office.

For several years this fund raiser has made our continued operation possible. We would like to thank the parishioners of IHM for your

past contributions and hope that you will once again support our Pro-Life mission in the East County. If you know anyone in need of our services, or would like to explore volunteering for Birthright, please call Rose Deitz at (925)634.1275.
