Homily 17th Sunday Year C. (Fr. Seno) (Gn18:20 – 32; Ps138:1 – 3, 6 – 8; Col2:12 – 14; Lk11:1:1 – 13)

My dear children of God, (Gen 18:20-32) Abraham left for us a wonderful example of love of neighbor. He

prayed using the intercessory prayer. We can pray for others and God will hear and answer our prayers. Abraham did not wish to see the people of those cities to be suddenly sent to their grave if only ten innocents’ people had been found in them, the cities and their inhabitants would have been saved by Abraham’s intercession.

From today’s Gospel, (Lk 11:1-13) we gather that patience or perseverance is one of the essential attributes of prayer. In the absence of them means we do not know how to pray. We also have two other attributes of prayer which are faith and “right intention”.

Children of God, when we pray, we must have faith that God will answer us. We must believe that God is able to do what we are asking from Him. When praying, we must also believe that He is willing to do it for us; that is, He cares enough, He has our interest enough to do it for us. The basis of this faith can be seen in the words of Jesus in our Gospel passage: “ask and you will receive… for everyone who asks, receives”. Jesus did not say, “Ask, and it may be given to you.” What he said was, “Ask, and you will receive.” He did not say, “The one who asks sometimes receives.” No! He said, “The one who asks always receives.” Jesus was not given to making frivolous promises, promises that he could not or would not deliver. That is why we have to be convinced that if he said so, then it has to be so. That is why we can and we must pray with faith.

But what we are praying for must be for our own or our neighbor’s good. That is where “right intention” comes in. If what I am praying for is not for my own or my neighbor’s good, God will not do it for me. He will substitute something that is good for me or the neighbor that I am praying for. Yes, no responsible father would hand his son a stone when he asked for bread, or hand him a snake instead of a fish or scorpion instead of an egg. But what responsible father would hand his son a stone if he asked for one, when what he really needed was bread? What responsible father would hand his son a snake or a scorpion even if he asked for either of them? In the same way, God cannot be expected to give us anything that would turn out to be a stone or a snake or a scorpion in our hands, even if we asked him.

The next attribute we must bring to prayers is patience or perseverance. God is absolutely sovereign. He does not take orders from us. He will do what we ask for in prayer in His own time, not our time. Did not we all say that God’s time is the best? How come we do not seem to believe that when it comes to prayer?

My dear children of God let us pray for this world we live in today. Even more for our nation America. We have problem with the way things are in our world today. We have gone past the jet age and space age into computer age and even now to robot age. We seem to be able to do a lot of things at the touch of a button. Now for example you can talk to the remote to change channels you want to watch on your television. As a result, many of us have lost the attribute of patience. If something we want fails to materialize at the time we expected it, we give up. We stop trying. We will cry out and say, “It is of no use. We are just wasting our time.” A well-known adage in days gone by used to be “If once you try and you did not succeed, try, try, try again.” It would seem that many of us today have settled for a modern corruption of that adage, which says, “If once you try and you do not succeed, do not be a fool; and give up!” That is not the right attitude to bring to prayer.

The lesson of today’s gospel passage is: when we pray, it is we who must wait on the Lord, and not the Lord waiting for us. We cannot give God deadline to do what we want or else… That is what we are doing if we lack patience or perseverance when we pray. Please join me to sing:

Prayer is the Key (2wice) Prayer is the master key Jesus started with prayer and ended in praying Prayer is the master key. Alleluia.

Our Lord Jesus is a man of prayer. Even before he died was praying. Only the self-sufficient do not pray, the self-satisfied will not pray, and the self-righteous cannot pray. Otherwise, all of us pray. We pray because we cannot help praying. We must pray in adversity as well as in prosperity. Two things are required of a well: it must not freeze in winter and must not run dry in summer. Two things are required of piety: it must not be chilled by adversity, it must not wither in prosperity.

Pastor’s Corner Here’s the First Reflection on the Third Definition of Evangelization by Pope Paul VI in Evangelii Nuntiandi: “Evangelization… is a complex process made up of varied elements: the renewal of humanity, witness, explicit proclamation, inner adherence, entry into the community, acceptance of signs, apostolic initiative” (Paragraph 24). Beloved, the above definition is clearly an overview of the totality of what it means to be a Christian. Some of the aspects highlighted have been elaborated in our previous Pastor’s Corner reflections. For instance, “the Renewal of Humanity [from within],” where we explained the heart is the target of evangelization; that the purpose of evangelization is precisely “interior change.” It means our heart become reconfigured in the model of Christ’s heart: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matt 11:29). This interior change is a spiritual revolution: expected to affect all the aspects of our life – our thinking, our attitudes and actions, the activities we engage in, and our political, cultural, social, ideological lives. In that way, we are fulfilling the second element: “Witness [of life]” (cf. Rom 2:21-24). It implies our words and actions must correspond together, having inner unity. Nevertheless, such witness is not done in isolation from Christ, but only in Christ; else it would amount to mere self-righteousness: “for apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Gal 2:20). INVITATIONS FOR WORSHIP: Please, in this spirit of the New Evangelization, always be keen to invite family and friends to our parish. Tell them, “Come and see!” (John 1:39, 46). Try and say “Only ONE Positive” Thing about IHM to a friend or neighbor this week. BLESSING OF HOMES AND VISITATION. Do you want to know your Pastor well? Invite him to your house. I am open to any parishioner who wants me to visit or bless their homes. Call the Parish Office: 352–687-4031 and schedule for the visit. It is good to have your priest at your home and you get to know him better that seeing him from afar. We have noticed that donations of can goods and other food items dwindle in the summer months yet, the need of food for our families is still very essential, especially families with children. We ask when you do your grocery shopping to think of our pantry. Even a single can of meat or soup or jar of peanut butter and jelly, or gift card can make a difference. It is only through your generosity that we are able to help so many in need. Thank you for your continued generosity and loving support. Food pantry is open the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month from 10:00am to 12:00pm. We need the following: canned vegetables, tuna & mayo, peanut butter & jelly, instant mashed potatoes, spaghetti sauce, macaroni & cheese, tomatoes products, canned pork & beans/beans, cereal, cookies, crackers and Jell-O.

Did you know…? Your gifts to Our Catholic Appeal help others to encounter Christ. The Diocese of Orlando facilitates the Church’s mission to evangelize– to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28:19). As a result of your gifts to Our Catholic Appeal, our diocese is able to offer catechetical ministry support to parishes with the aim of fostering mature discipleship and promoting vibrant communities of faith. Whether intergenerational or family –based, age-appropriate for adults, adolescents or children, the goal is to help parishes be discipleship learning centers that help people explore the richness of their Catholic faith, deepen their relationship with Christ, and share more fully in the mission of the Church. Please visit www.cfocf.org/OCA/give to make a gift online.
