N ovember marks the Month of Thanksgiving. Consid-

ering that our theme this Fraternal Year is to

“Give Thanks”, it is a great month to do just that.

First, I would like to express my utmost gratitude to Isaac

and all of the Brother Knights who were able to partici-

pate in the Church Festival. We had over 20 Brother

Knights working the Festival, including a large number

that grilled and cooked on Saturday, calling out the Bingo

competition, and cooking spaghetti on Friday. If you vol-

unteered, please make sure you signed the SE worksheet.

Second, I would like give thanks to Brother Joel for coor-

dinating this year’s Clergy Appreciation Dinner. All three

of our priests were able to attend along with our 4th De-

gree Assembly Chaplain, Father Morris. This was Joel’s

9th and final year coordinating this event. It was his best

effort, yet. Thank you, Joel.

Finally, I want to thank our Columbian Squires for the

hard work they put in with helping at both the Clergy Ap-

preciation Dinner and Church Festival. It was their sup-

port and youthful leadership which helped make the

events supported by the Knights a complete success.

Thank you again!

October was a very busy month for our Council and as the

calendar year comes to a close, I ask all Brother Knights

to submit their stories of thanks to this Newsletter to share

how and why you are thankful.

P rayer: Lord, during this month of thanksgiving,

let our hearts be open and ready to give you

thanks, for your blessings (although not always

seen right away) are bountiful and given freely, with no

expectations to receive anything in return. The least we

can do is be thankful and glad for your Fatherly love, for

it is right and just. We humbly ask this in the name of

your Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.

T his year, our parish will

begin a series of Nove-

nas during the weekly

Eucharistic Adoration.

The Women’s Guild and Knights

are responsible for the Immacu-

late Conception Novena. This is

most welcome, since we are a

Brotherhood devoted to our Lady

and the Holy Rosary.

Unlike a normal novena which is

said over a 9 day period, this spe-

cific novena will take place over a

9 week period on Mondays when the Eucharist is exposed

after the 6 p.m. mass.

As we share this novena with the Women’s Guild, our

days will be November10, and 24, and December 8, 22,

and 29. Yes, there are 10 weeks, so the same prayer will

be used on Weeks 9 and 10.

If you would like to participate and lead a week, please

instructions and prayers needed for this novena.

A t the last Business meeting, two representa-

tives of Good Samaritans, Jim Griffin and

Pam Swendig, gave an overview of that or-

ganization’s ministry. The organization was

formed over 30 years ago from the individual charity ef-

forts of three local churches, including ours. Father Juan

Carlos Marin and Grand Knight Adrian Rodriquez pre-

sented them with a check for $1,850 from donations col-

lected during the weekend in September. $3,700 was col-

lected in the “Food for the Poor” drive.

Kevin Conway nominated Mikel Nunley as a new mem-

ber of Council #8954. Welcome Mikel.

Congratulations to recent awardees. Knight of the Month

Award for September was given to Ad Cometa. Father

Dankasa has been awarded the 4th Degree.

Isaac Sandoval has completed his initial 3 year term as

Financial Secretary. Reapplication has been submitted to

Supreme for another three year term.

The Council currently has 268 members. The goal for this

year is 18 new members. We have one, so far. The insur-

ance goal is seven new members. We have 2, so far. You

might want to review the new term insurance policies that

are offered. Term insurance can now be bought up to 85

years of age. Term insurance is still the best way of pro-

tecting an insurable asset. Eleven per cent of our members

attended the last meeting.

Council #8954 visits the VA Hospital every 3rd Wednes-

day of each month. We play Bingo for 20-25 minutes,

have a snack break, and then play final Bingo for another

20-25 minutes. We meet at Jupiter-side St. Joseph’s Flag

Pole at 5:30pm. Leave St. Joseph’s at 6pm and normally

return about 9pm. The Council provides $40 in quarters

for Bingo prizes. Now we only fill one vehicle with

Council volunteers. Consider attending every 3rd Wednes-

day. Especially if you’re a Vet! The Veterans take care

of their own.

Casino Night is coming. Put January 31 on your calen-

dar. Roger Flesch and Linda Scott are organizing the

event. Joe Horan will do the Silent Auction. Paul Sine

will train the Dealers. We save $3K by providing our

own Dealers. This is the biggest Council #8954 Fund

Raiser. Get involved. Be a part of the action.

Roger Flesch and Br. Don O’Bryan have been assigned

by Fr. Tim to form a new “Parish Archive Committee” in

preparation for St. Joseph’s 50th Anniversary (12 years

away). They will gather information from St. Joseph’s

Day one existence into a book to be published.

Three North Texas Councils, Numbers 1200 from St. An-

thony and 12321 from St. Paul, and 8954 combined their

resources sponsoring the annual Hike For Life in

Breckenridge Park in Richardson.

A large turnout enjoyed the beautiful day walking through

the park working up an appetite for the hamburgers and

hot dogs provided by the Councils. Walkers from the

Wylie Council earned over $800 in pledges in support of

the programs of the Hike for Life. Each paid participant

was given a T-shirt to commemorate the event.

The T shirt this year had the most unusual design. The

logo depicted the first hike taken by the Holy Family on

its trek to Bethlehem. That was truly the first Hike for

Life. Congratulations to the person whose idea created the

uniquely designed T-shirt.

Admiraldo is well deserved,

as there is not an activity of

the Council in which Admi-

raldo is not involved.

Whether it is selling burritos

on Sunday or setting up for

the garage sale, the help of

Admiraldo is always cheer-

fully available. Congratula-

tions to Brother Cometa for

his well deserved award and many thanks for his assis-

tance and dedication.

I n our commitment to Pro-Life, our Council has com-

mitted to a 9-day novena to St. Joseph to pray for

men participating in the one day Project Joseph re-

treat on November 8.

Project Joseph is a one-day retreat for men who have ex-

perienced abortion in some way. Perhaps, they encour-

aged it, fought against it, or simply said nothing.

It has been found that abortion deeply affects men. The

natural instincts inherent in males is to protect, and de-

fend their own. When a baby dies, men tend to stuff their

pain deep inside. This pain surfaces and is exhibited in

many ways. It surfaces as problems within their families.

There are parenting issues, addictions, rage and other dys-

functional behaviors.

Project Joseph is the only Catholic retreat in the South

which is geared to men to assist them to overcome the

remorse associated with abortion. It is for men, led and

served by men. This is the first time it will be offered in

Spanish. Please contact Adrian Rodriguez at
