2nd SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 6, 2015
Last week, we asked Christ to come to our aid; this
week, we ask Him to move us to action, so that we can prepare ourselves for His coming at Christmas.
Advent Wreath Prayer for the Second Week of
Advent
Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to prepare the ways of Thine only-begotten Son, that through His coming we may be worthy to serve Thee with
purified minds. Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.
The Fruits of Our Lives
To help you determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that
comes through Jesus Christ…Philippians 1:10-11
What counts in your life and mine is not successes but fruits. The fruits of our life are born often in our pain and in our vulnerability and in our
losses. The fruits of our life come only after the plow has carved through our land. God wants us to be fruitful.
The question is not, “How much can I prepare myself for total surrender so my life can be fruitful?
Our little lives are small, human lives. But in the eyes of the One who calls us the beloved, we are great-greater than the years we have. We will bear
fruit, fruit that you and I will not see on this earth but whose reality we can trust.
Solitude, community, ministry-these disciplines help us live a fruitful life. Remain in Jesus, he remains in you. You will bear many fruits, you will
have great joy, and your joy will be complete. ~A Spiritual Living
Novena in Honor of The Immaculate Conception
November 30th to December 8th The Novena Prayers will be offered at all of the
daily masses.
Mary Immaculate is the patroness of our country and of the Oblates who serve here at
the Shrine, Prepare for the Feast of Mary Immaculate on December 8th
Pray for our nation, for the Oblates, and your own special intentions in these 9 days.
491 Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, “full of grace” through God,134 was redeemed from the
moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in
1854 Taken from the Catechism of the Catholic Church
Novena in Honor of the Immaculate Conception
Immaculate Virgin Mary, conceived without sin! We remember
that you were miraculously preserved from even the shadow of sin because you were destined to become not only the Mother of God,
but also the mother, the refuge and the advocate of humankind. Holding a lively confidence in your never-failing intercession, we ask you to look with favor upon the intentions of this novena, and
to obtain for us the graces we request. (pause)
Holy Mary, you know how often our hearts are the sanctuaries of God who abhors iniquity.
Obtain for us, then that angelic purity which was your favorite virtue; that purity of heart that will attach us to God alone and that
purity of intention which will consecrate every thought, word and action to His greater glory.
Obtain for us a constant spirit of prayer and self-denial so that we may recover by penance that innocence which we have lost by sin
and so come safely to that blessed abode of the saints, where nothing defiled can enter.
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY DECEMBER 8, 2015-NOVEMBER 20, 2016
“The church must be a place of mercy freely given,
where everyone can feel welcomed, loved, forgiven and encouraged to live the good life of the
Gospel.” Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel, 114
Like other previous jubilees, it will be a special, holy year of remission of sins and universal pardon, in this occasion
focusing particularly on God's forgiveness and mercy. It is an extraordinary Jubilee because it had not been predetermined long before; usually ordinary jubilees take place every 25 or 50
years. In fact, the 2016 Jubilee was first announced by Pope Francis on March 13, 2015. It is the 27th Holy Year in history, following the ordinary 2000 Jubilee during John Paul II papacy.
The opening day will also be the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council. In prior months it was stressed that the Pontiff wishes the Jubilee to be celebrated not only in Rome but in all local churches around the world: for the first time holy doors will be open in single dioceses, either in the main cathedral or in local historical churches. It was also announced that all priests
will be allowed to grant absolution forabortion, which outside North America, is reserved to bishops.

Gospel - Luke 21:25-28, 34-36 Christ the Friend
St. Luke begins this chapter of his Gospel curiously; with a list of
names and places that seem irrelevant at first glance. Twenty centuries after the fact, we are interested in Jesus, not in tetrarchs
and obsolete geography. But these details reveal something crucial about Jesus: he is not an abstract God. He weaves his action and presence into the fabric of our day-to-day lives; he takes up his
stance on the crossroads of everyone’s personal history and addresses us there. And he does it because he wants to. Jesus Christ is a God who is our friend, not a faceless, aloof divine
architect.

Further Reflection: Catechism of The Catholic Church
2567 God calls man first. Man may forget his Creator or hide far from his face; he may run after idols or accuse the deity of having
abandoned him; yet the living and true God tirelessly calls each
person to that mysterious encounter known as prayer. In prayer, the faithful God's initiative of love always comes first; our own first
step is always a response. As God gradually reveals himself and reveals man to himself, prayer appears as a reciprocal call, a
covenant drama. Through words and actions, this drama engages the heart. It unfolds throughout the whole history of salvation.

2nd Sunday of Advent Admit it! We’ve all faked the words to a song—or hymn—that everyone else seemed to know. We hum along, or make up words and try not to be noticed, but sometimes make disastrous mistakes. For example, an exchange student was listening to the radio, intent on learning a holiday song. Instead of singing “giddy-up, giddy-up, giddy-up, let’s go,” she sang “idiot, idiot, idiot, let’s go!” Right melody, wrong words. People listened to the prophets, teachers and preachers for years. The message was often very similar: reform, change, grow in holiness, observe the law, and live your life to please God. Sacrifice, discipline and service were necessary to the spiritual life. Somewhere along the way, the message was changed and now people hear a message of a Gospel of prosperity, financial blessings and that enough faith will make you great. There is no substitute for truth. We have to get the message right, to hear the words of the prophets, of the martyrs and saints, of the Church, indeed, the words of Jesus Himself. We cannot fake faith, nor just play along as though we know what it’s all about. John the Baptist reminds us to hear the words of the Gospel and proclaim it in word and in deed. It’s a melody that carried life and grace.

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is
Prayed Monday through Saturday at
the Shrine
at 3 pm, the hour of mercy.
2nd Sunday of Advent In a writing course, students had to write an essay in which they were to define love. It proved to be a difficult challenge. Everyone had used the word, and knew what it referred to. But to actually define it, make it precise and understandable, took a lot of time and effort. Most of the students did not do well. They knew what it meant, but had difficulty explaining it. It raises a good question for us in Advent. What do we really believe? We use religious words like faith, belief, grace and salvation, Savior and Lord. But what do the words mean to us? How do they change our way of looking at the world, and how we act and what we think? Time and time again, the Church calls us to be renewed, to strengthen our faith, to deepen our prayer, to be more apostolic and to offer a better example to others. Our faith is meant to be one of action, change, and transformation. During Advent, we recall God’s plan of salvation, and how we are the beneficiaries and the missionaries of His work and love. We know the whole story of our redemption. With God’s presence—His grace—in our lives, we are changed. Our celebration and our actions will tell the world how.
