Please note that we cannot disclose personal information about a person who has been deceased less than 20 years. An exception can be made in some cases (to execute a will or obtain certain benefits, for example). You must provide a detailed account of your situation, as well as proof of death, so that we can determine whether an exception can be made. A death certificate, an obituary or a photograph of the person's headstone constitutes proof of death. If you are making a request for information about another individual whose consent you do not have, the request will be considered individually to determine whether the information can be released in accordance with paragraph 19(2) of the Access to Information Act. SECTION B - INFORMATION REQUESTED Provide the name, aliases and date of birth of the person whose information you wish to obtain. If you are requesting information for an entire family, you are only required to submit one request form to obtain an immigration file; but be sure to include the appropriate consents from each person over the age of 18. Select the types of records that you are seeking. For the record(s) requested, please provide your file number and/or client identification number and location. Choose from the following options: (1) Electronic files: Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) uses three electronic systems (abroad and in-Canada) to process applications for citizenship and immigration services. To obtain the status of a file, the electronic files may be sufficient. Requests for electronic files can be processed more quickly than requests for physical files that are held at missions abroad, which can increase the processing time. Remember that processing times vary from case to case. (2) Physical files: Physical files include all files located in Canada or abroad that pertain to an immigration process. If you wish to obtain a medical file, be sure to check the appropriate box on the form. X-rays will not be provided with the medical file. If you wish to obtain the permanent resident card application, be sure to check the appropriate box on the form. The permanent resident card application does not include the actual permanent resident application form. If you wish to obtain the citizenship and naturalization files, be sure to check the appropriate box on the form. Note: Most file numbers found in visa files and electronic files have seven digits, preceded by a B, V, W, S, E, or F.
