SUCCESS STORY

I still remember my first meeting with Mr. Joe

Eshwar the heart and soul of Kunthapura the movie. I was sure after that meeting this man is going to make history in film making. I salute his passion towards film making. Today his dream Kunthapura the movie become reality. This movie

is going to brake all traditional myths of film mak-ing. Joe went through a totally different path of traditional film making and break all the thumb rules and added new rules for film making. He standing in front of us as a symbol of success who struggled and struggled to get in to this suc-cess. He bring Kunthapura the movie to reality with out the help of any "God fathers" in industry.

The story of survival: Kunthapura the movie

20 Imaginations

In his words "What I have is tiny. I set sail with what I have. The road to Kunthapura has always been tough. Slopes, bypaths and hillocks. The Journey started over a decade ago. I see the vil-lage from far, I see Moorthy, Vasundhara, Lalitha, I see Malliyappa, Radhakka and Little Krishnappa. Arise birds, trees and Hiriseve hills, bear witness. Help me to paint this picture well. I remember Ra-

ja Rao, the man who took me by hand through out this journey. I thank the useful notes provided by Rasipuram Krishna Swamy Narayan in the form of 'Malgudi Days', above all I thank the almighty for having given me the confidence to make this film." The story of Kunthapura and the story of how it was made will be an answer for all those who say 'It's out of question'. Nothing in this world is im-possible if your intentions are genuine. This film is also a story of the struggles a group of men en-dured, to fight against time to make this film. It's a victory of all struggling filmmakers in the world.

SUCCESS STORY It was paramount to remember the humble begin-nings of Kunthapura which dates back to 2001. Sit-

ting in our favorite adda Shiny Hotel Joe and his film loving friends de-cided on making this film. It took another 3 years to arrange neces-sary funds to start the pilot version of it. ( It w a s n a m e d a s "Bogady"). N Bala Subramaniam wrote in

his blog in 2005, the updates of the shoot of the On the 18th of March, 2004, 'Kunthapura' sparked off to life. The team, Joe ( Director), Viju , Sudeep, Prashanth and Vinod, actors and Christian John-son both an actor and cinematographer of the film left for Pollachi, a lush terrain in Tamil Nadu, the neighboring state of Kerala. Pious Sebastian, a common friend’s van was used by the team to trav-el. The first day of the shoot in Pollachi was as illu-

sive as a dream. The cinematographer took a long time to get adjust-ed with the locale and to shoot the film in the natural light. The actors were also a bit camera conscious and that made the whole day

dry. By evening Joe was found shouting at every-one, a behavior then whole team was used to dur-ing discussion of the film. The next day Joe took over the camera and slowly ‘Bogady’ rose to life. On the second day three scenes were shot with

some fillers. The same evening they returned to Kerala and the first promo was cut. With leg-endary musician Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan’s music as the background score the promo simply looked great. This energized the entire team. All the members resolved to invest in the film the way they could. The first schedule was a terrific experience to all the members of the team as they all had the opportunity to work both in front of the camera and behind.

In 2011 Joe and his team successfully complet-ed his all time dream Kunthapura the movie by Recreating History. This success is the symbol of dedication, hard work and the passion. The common man is the majority in the world. On his behalf is this movie made. For many years what the common man was made to believe collapsed like a pack of cards and he made his confession. This is a confession made by peo-ple when a they just miss the ferry .... and nev-er the confessions of the ones who reached ashore or let's say whom providence took where they wanted

Joe want to dedicate his success to his team members. In his words "Stars like Biyon Gemini and Mishal Nazdn stood in 40 degrees of scorching heat through out. Dasappan fainted due to heat. Cinematog-rapher Navas Ismail never left the camera even for a personal talk. Sometimes even the food was served in a cattle shed. What made Kun-thapura an everlasting memory was the goodness of a number of peo-ple on set. I salute them." This dedication is what we miss in film indus-try now. Biyon a promising talent with a great caliber !!You may have seen him in many movies as a young Mammooty /young Suresh Gopi. But Kuntha-pura is going to bring out the Real Performer hidden in Biyon as Murthy the Hero of Kunthapura will be a different experience for you from this dedicated performer. Priyalal an upcoming actress performed a promis-ing role as Vasundhara. It was a challenging role for a new actress but she outperforms the role beyond the directors imagination. This film also bring many new talented actors to the silver screen. Mishal Nazdn a known name in stages as Singer done a wonderful performance in this movie. Nelson performed a lead supporting role made a remarkable en-try to silver screen. At Kunthapura many dreams come true. Dear Friends Kunthapura needs your support. It needs your encourage-ment. Speak about it. Write about it. Above all love it so as we can to-gether create history. Without each one of you there is nothing called KUNTHAPURA

Some people around me surprise me with their talents. Sreejith is one among them. I

surprise of his silence and I want to break it. That is the reason I want to write about him. At first I was impressed with his singing talents. After some time I found that he can sketch pictures which turn myself from his friend to Fan. He used to walk around with camera. The photos he clicks make me feel that I should use them as a reference for me. I am sure Sreejith will not agree with any of the things I wrote here. For me his talents are at par or above with the known and professionals I know. So I am proud to share some of his sketches and Photos he shared through his facebook account. I wish he will take his talents seriously and work towards enriching them. Please note that these images may be private property so please don't use them without his writ-ten confirmation.

me with his multi talents. I was lucky to work with him in AVT McCormick for about four years. I was always a fan of his photography. Today my pictures were appreciated by many but I want to express my gratitude to him for inviting me to this colorful side of light, frames and passion. That is the reason I want to write about him. For me his talents are at par or above with the known and professionals I know and I use to fill my eyes and heart with his beautiful frozen moments. " Take photographs with Nikon D80, lens 18-135mm Photographer: Maitreya, All rights Unreserved. My works can be reproduced, copied, edited, published, transmitted, printed, uploaded, or used in any way without any permission from me." Friends his photographs are amazing. I fall in love with this gentleman's generosity. That is the reason I want to write about him. So I am proud to share some of his Photos he shared through his facebook account. Please note that these images are open to all as mentioned. Please have a look and have a virtual journey to the beautiful world he created for us.

UPDATES

W hat next after Kunthapura? The team already

started working on the next production. The Story and Screen Play already finalized. Casting for this movie is in progress. Director Joe Eshwar will join the team after completing his project with Rupesh Paul “Saint Draculla-3D” The film is

scheduled to start shooting on First quarter of 2012 and will be in Theaters by mid of 2012. The name of the mov-ie is suggested by Kuthapura facebook group members. We decided to involve the

group members for each part of this production. This film will be produced in Tamil and Malaya-lam at the same time. Both the versions of the

movie may differ little in treatment. This film is producing in Two languages because of some solid reason behind. The story starts in Tamilnadu and ends in Kerala. So there is some sig-nificant reason to pro-

duce this movie in two languages. By this movie the team reveals some hidden dangers and trying

to educate the public who may fall into same situ-ation. This story is inspired by true events. It is the story of Love and care of a father and his daughter. The film may capture your heart for it’s realistic romance. In one word Pattam-Poochi ( Minnaminni in Malayalam) is going to give you a feel good entertainment time. We are not planning to make a film just for the sake of making a film. This film is formulated such a way to break the recent concept of production cost, marketing and tra-ditional myths. The total film including Tamil and Malaya-lam version will be produced wi th 75,00,000. Which is very much less than the remunera-tion of a “super” star in Malayalam or Tamil film Industry. We miss the old time of south Indian movies where we talk about strong stories, quality pro-duction and high technicality. We should not for get the first 3D film in Indian cinema “ My Dear Kuttichathan” is from south India. Pattam Poochi will be produced without any compromise for its technical perfection.

If you have the passion in film making ( I will say with proud like our director Joe Eshwar) and you are not able to start because you don’t have a helping hand in Industry ( Known as godfathers) you can contact us. Tell as about your interest is in what area of film mak-ing. We want to make our own in house team to work in our production house with a real passion from heart. We are here for making our dream. We need to refine it again and again to make gold out of our talents and imaginations. We need talented people to assist the experienced team in all stages of film making. In act-ing to post Production we need your support. We are also planning to make a “preview” group to review the films before it is released. So if you are interested in participate you are welcome.

H ow costly camera I need to take good pho-

tographes? Often many come across these ques-tions. I done my experiment with Fujifilm point and shoot camera which cost me around INR 4200 (SR 399 with a many free gifts). I was satis-fied with it's result for most of the situations. One thing I would like to comment is it is tiny and easy to handle. If you fed-up with your camera next time, try out some of these improvement tech-niques using your digital point-and-shoot camera. 1. Use the manual modes Make the bold move to switch the camera dial from “Auto” to “Manual.” More point-and-shoot digital cameras these days come with built-in manual modes, depending on price and manufac-turer. Some point-and-shoots cameras include manual features in which users can control aper-ture and shutter speed, features that were once only limited to higher-priced SLRs for advanced users. That isn’t the case anymore. Some point-and-shoots now carry manual functions that give users the benefit to control shooting capabilities in varied lighting and speed situations. The ma-jority of point-and-shoots include controls for ISO speed (usually 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, and sometimes 3200), flash (On, Off, Auto, Red-eye Reduction), and sometimes exposure stops (+/- 2).I recommend to use the lowest ISO in day light and never use ISO more than 400 in your point and shoot camera.

Improve Point-and-Shoot Photography

32 Imaginations

2. Use the flash wisely Point-and-shoots tend to employ a flash-on set-ting as the default mode. In day light, most situa-tions will call for little flash compensation since most vacationers spend their time outdoors that is already well lit. Those with a traveler’s heart, though, should shut off the automatic flash or sup-press the pop-up in situations with plenty of light. You can also turn off the flash for nighttime shoot-ing. To compensate for the lack of light and flash, the camera will boost ISO or slow down the shut-ter speed, usually automatically, unless overrid-den in manual mode by the user. You might want to also use a mini travel tripod or simply set the camera to an automatic timer that is included on almost every camera for the increased time it takes to capture the night picture. Turning off the flash captures the ambient light for more natural-looking pictures. For those outdoors situations, users should consider turning down flash to fill in for overcast or shady conditions. Not all point-and-shoots offer this adjustable feature to increase and decrease flash increments, but if your camer-as does, use it. It can help properly expose your outdoor photos for even lighting. 3. Remember the zoom Do a practice run on your zoom by photographing objects like flower buds and engagement rings. Sometimes, you might notice that your point-and-shoot sets off a ”!” alert that indicates the image might be blurry. Instead of putting the lens too close to the subject, move back and then zoom in

Imaginations 33

PHOTOGRAPHY

using the lens. This technique is also particularly useful for portraiture. Pulling back away from the subject allows the person to feel more relaxed for more natural smiles, but also provides less fore-shortening of noses or foreheads for more realis-tic and prettier faces. 4. Get a new perspective Photograph from below or shoot from above. Try getting down on the ground to spruce up land-scape photography that can make small churches look like cathedrals. You can kneel or simply crouch similar to the way baseman empires do. Point your camera upwards to make things in the foreground appear much bigger than they really are. Look for things like street signs with the city behind it or flowers in the foreground with the grassy knoll in the background. Also consider shooting overhead for a bird’s eye view. Climb to the second level of a shopping mall or other multi-floor venues, and shoot down below. Zoom out, and keep your camera parallel to the ground. This will get the tops of people’s heads, which is interesting for big crowds or people in formal wear. This is particularly effective for wide shots. 5. Night scenes Many offen complains about night photography and low light photography. Tripods are helpful for nighttime and landscape photography. Bolt the point-and-shoot to the camera socket. During nights, turn off the flash for some long exposures. The tripod will steady the camera. Try shooting cars zooming by on a busy city street. The long exposure will make the cars look like streaks and the light posts like starbursts. 34 Imaginations

6. Panorama You can consider using the tripod for landscape shots. Rotate the camera horizontally using the tripod. Take a series of photos at the same level for a 180-degree, panoramic view. If you choose to, you can use this series of photos for a post-processing stitching to create one long, wide pho-to.

7. Creative subject framing To get a little more creative, try framing your sub-jects off center. Try depressing the shutter half-way to focus. Recompose the photo off-center, and take the shot. This should keep the focus on the subject, even if it is not at the center of frame, adding a dynamic element particularly to your por-traiture photography. This should work with most point-and-shoots, but some cameras will default to the center as the point of focus. In that case, change the AF setting to “Spot” or “Tracking AF” via the menu system.

8.Red in Picture Look for interesting points in a landscape or street scene with a flash of red to make subjects stand out from their surroundings. Ask your portrait sub-ject to wear a red scarf or hat or switch shirts to a red color. Just as in car colors, people are more likely to be drawn to red.

Remember that a new environment means a new kind of shooting. Practice these tips prior to the trip, and then use them for live event. You might be surprised at how easy some of the techniques are. It merely requires you getting to know your point-and-shoot better to take advantage of its full feature set of manual modes and customizable settings. Beyond the camera itself, remember to mix it up a bit with varied angles.
