Illuminated Manuscripts

Medieval Cards Quiz 3

• 1. What is feudalism?

• 2. What is manorialism?

• Read the handout on the Roman Catholic Church.

Illuminated Manuscripts

• Illuminations defined a time in history when the ability to read was sacred and reserved for religious leaders or those born of royal blood.

• The Manuscripts were elaborately decorated and hand copied by monks

Illuminated Manuscripts

An illumination is a colorful, or additional decoration that enhances the pages of a written, or manuscript page.

Scribes

• A scribe copied exactly the text of an existing manuscript.

• The scribe worked in a special room called a scriptorium that was set aside for the writing of manuscripts.

• Scribes were copyists, not writers, who composed works of literature, and they trained for many years to develop graceful and uniform handwriting.

Illuminated Manuscripts

Illuminated Manuscripts

• An illuminated letter was usually the first letter of a page or paragraph. It was always enlarged and in color with gold applied in areas, while the rest of the text remained black.

Manuscripts

Illuminated Manuscripts • An artist or illuminator

painted small pictures, or miniatures, plus borders and capital letters with elaborate and intricate designs that had practical functions.

• The decorated letters announced the beginning of a new section or paragraph while the miniatures illustrated the text.

• This was important because many of the medieval people who owned manuscripts were barely able to read.
