It’s All About the Kids!As I write my last Illeiowan article as the I-I District Governor I am challenged with the many topics from which to choose. Do I write that we opened 4 New Clubs? That coming into September District membership was up almost by almost 200? That each District Club continues to make a difference in its community through its service? How well we delivered on the District’s I-Plan? How many children’s lives we touched through our efforts?

Those that attended the District Convention in August heard all of those statistics and more. Instead, I want to reflect on what was mentioned by a contestant that participated in the DuPage County’s Mexican Cultural Center’s Miss Mexican Heritage Scholarship Pageant just a few weeks ago. We attended the pageant as it was held in West Chicago, the home of the district’s newest Kiwanis club.

This particular candidate stated that she was not participating because of the title but instead to help communicate her message. Her message was one of wanting to better identify both leadership and service opportunities within her community and then capitalize on these opportunities. This of course helped me reflect on this past year of Kiwanis service. Although Kiwanis “Governor” is a nice title, what it really offers is the opportunity to work and serve with the leaders of our clubs, divisions, districts and Kiwanis International. Certainly I was occasionally “pulled” off course as some felt their priorities were more important than another’s but I always found it critical to come back and focus on what Kiwanis is all about... the Kids.

I thank you for the opportunity to serve and work with so many of my fellow Kiwanians. I truly believe that we individually and

Bottom: 2016-17 I-I District Kiwanis Governor Rick Poulton presided over the evening’s formalities.

It is hard to believe that convention weekend has already come and gone, but we sure did make the most out of it! Starting Thursday with a rather warm golf outing and cooling off at the new Desthil Brewery, we had a chance to share in some much needed fellowship before the big weekend ahead. I could not even count the number of catfish fritters that were eaten and beers that were drank, it was the perfect way to kick off a busy weekend.

I don’t know about you, but Friday is always my favorite day of convention! We celebrated all of the great accomplishments of our mighty clubs and then got to raise money for a good cause with our Trivia night. I have never seen a group of Kiwanians more excited than I did that night answering questions about Monopoly and buying stickers. And who could forget the photo booth!

Saturday brought us a jampacked day between the business session where we heard all about our great SLP programs and election of new leadership, to the evening

comedy show. Kiwanians came to learn about what they can do to better their clubs and the community around them while attending forums. Big news was also announced that the name of the Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation would be changing to the Kiwanis Neuroscience Research Foundation.

Sunday we ended with a great breakfast on all the progress that has been made with the Eliminate project. Great things have happened these past 100 years for the mighty II Kiwanis!

The clubs and members in Division 22 worked tirelessly to put on a great 100th convention for all of us, and I would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication. A very wise past CKI governor once told me that Kiwanis to him means family, and I am so happy to be a part of this extended family. We have celebrated 100 years together as a family— and now on to the next 100!

21 Illeiowan 2017 CONVENTION REVIEW iikiwanis.org

At the 100th Illinois-Eastern Iowa District Convention, the name of our District’s medical research foundation was formally announced as the “Kiwanis Neuroscience Research Foundation” (KNRF). Still and always our I-I District’s “FINEST PROJECT” the new name replaces the Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation, which has been the name of the medical research foundation since its inception in 1952. “The idea to change the name of the Foundation was supported by the researchers themselves,” explains Executive Director Ken Whitmore. “The term ‘Spastic’ is at best antiquated – each of our researchers is pursuing topics that are

more accurately described as ‘neuroscience’, including Alzheimer’s, spina bifida, tinnitus, strokes, and many others.

We polled the researchers and asked for their suggestions for name changes, and they agreed on Kiwanis Neuroscience Research Foundation.” The KNRF remains a 501(c)3 charitable organization as described by the Internal Revenue Service and any contributions

remain tax deductible. Support for KNRF comes primarily from the Kiwanis family in the I-I District, including Kiwanis clubs and Service Leadership Program (SLP) clubs.
