Hello and welcome on board!July is one of the busiest months for us. With over 160 weekly flights to around 50 destinations this

summer, we are planning to carry 1.2 million passengers. With this schedule running till October, we are

operating 26 scheduled services, whilst 23 are charter flights.

A number of changes to last year’s summer schedule were to maximise opportunities, increase efficiency and

make flights more attractive, both for Maltese citizens as well as for the tourists visiting the islands.

We have now finalised our Winter 2015/16 schedule, and we are happy to announce that we will be

increasing operations and carrying more passengers on our Malta-based routes. In this edition you can

read more about this together with other interesting features about the airline’s celebrations relating to 40

years of operations at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. You will also find an interview with Patrick Caruana,

our Head of Contract Management, who explains the importance of his new role within the airline.

Summer has kicked off and for those of us who live in the Mediterranean this can only mean one

thing; life is about to get better. You see, to us summer isn’t merely a season, a number of days

within the calendar month, it’s a lifestyle – and one we look forward to welcoming all year round.

Apart from the obvious sun and sea bonus that comes with living on an island, Malta is literally

bursting with events during this season which gives us the added opportunity to spend time with

Becoming a Maltese Resident

Malta has been a natural hub for relocation ever

since the 1994 Malta Permanent Residence

Scheme was launched and, more recently,

the more advantageous schemes such as the

Global Residence Regulation Scheme 2014.

The country has seen a steady interest from EU

and Non- EU nationals purchasing or leasing

Favourite spot It's a tie between Café Elia in Hamrun - as comforting as a favourite aunt's sitting room - and the stretch of coast from Marsamxett to Ras iż-Żiemel under Valletta's bastions.

Personal recommendation I recommend staying in Valletta if possible. It's a wonderful place to live - currently buzzing with cultural activities, laid back bars and an increasingly greater variety of restaurants. Make time to get pleasantly lost there.

Favourite spot I would suggest exploring the magnificent Limits of Rabat (pack your backpacks and make a hike out of it) as well as rural areas such as Dingli, Baħrija, Landrijiet and Mtaħleb, the last of which, being the spot from where you will get to experience absolutely magical sunsets over an expansive Mediterranean sea view.

Favourite spot I absolutely love Gozo, and even though it’s been mentioned before, Għasri Valley is definitely one of the most beautiful sites there. Whether you’re into snorkelling, trekking, rock climbing or simply taking it easy, this breathtaking narrow creek is definitely one to visit.

Personal recommendation Explore the flavours of Malta during your stay, starting off from the casual pastizzi and mqaret on the street, to the more traditional fenkata (rabbit) or majjalata (roast pork) events organised in various locations.

Driving or walking around Malta you will probably notice little vans parked on the roadside with

a sign saying 'Imqaret' [Im-ahh-ret]. More often than not, this van will have a trickle of people leading to it as well as a few cars parked nearby, as peckish travellers pause for a sweet snack. Imqaret are little fried pastries filled with dates; they are best bought warm and eaten straight away. You bite into the soft, but slightly crispy, pastry to find a date filling that literally melts in your mouth. Bliss.

Imqaret are found all year round, although, come summer, when the feast season begins, the vans are more numerous as they set up shop at whichever village is celebrating. These treats are just one of the various types of street food found in Malta.

Food plays a huge part in the local village feasts, celebrated from after Easter through to the end of summer. While the feasts are a religious celebration, food is arguably sometimes even more important than the patron saint celebrated him or herself. In addition to the decorative festoons and party lights, the streets are populated by small kiosks, stalls and vans selling their culinary wares. Typical food here includes Pastizzi (triangular shaped ricotta- or pea-filled filo pastry cakes) and Timpana, which is quite literally a pasta pie: pasta mixed with meat and eggs and baked in a pastry case. As you amble through the streets, you can pick up a slab of this traditional meal and dig in.

Other foods served on the street include the traditional Ħobż biż-żejt [Hobz-biz-zeyt]. This is probably one of the

simplest meals imaginable, consisting, at its most minimalist, of bread, oil and tomatoes. It is essentially a variant of pizza but with the bread being cooked before the ingredients are added, and is one of the most delicious, and probably lightest, street delights. Ħobż biż-żejt is sold on the street in the form of a stuffed ftira (a small bread bun with a hard crust). Other savoury delights include Bigilla. This is essentially a dip made of mashed beans, oil, garlic and parsley. It is sometimes spread on bread as well as served as a dip alongside carrot and celery sticks.

Moving on to sweet things, one finds nougat, which is not exclusive to Malta but which has its own name here - Qubbajd - and is made from a mixture of sugar and/or honey and roasted nuts.

Some sweets are made or sold for specific occasions. These include sweets such as

Żeppoli for the feast of St Joseph, which falls on the 19 March. Żeppoli are a form of doughnut: a light, deep-fried ball of dough that is topped with powdered sugar and filled with sweet ricotta. A savoury version of these sweets exist, called Sfineġ, which have an anchovy filling instead.

Come Easter time some special sweets become available too. These include Kwarezimal, a delightful ‘cheat’ for those abstaining from sweets during the lenten weeks and which are a form of oblong biscuit made with ground almonds, cloves, cinnamon and rose water and then topped with honey and pistachio nuts. Once Lent is over, you can enjoy Figolli, another biscuit this time filled with marzipan and decorated with icing and little easter eggs.

The Maltese love their food and put a great deal of passion into making these treats. But, of course, as they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

A Case scenario

A young woman in her early 40s books an appointment for a consultation. She arrives at the clinic and is looking nervous but determined to go through with it. She first talks about her family. Venice The capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region is built on over 100 small islands, spread over a marshy lagoon in the Adriatic Sea.

What to See: Known for its lack of cars and roadways, Venice’s transport relies entirely on boats and canals that snake through the city and lead to innumerable narrow alleys and intimate squares. Visit St Mark’s Basilica, found in the stunning Piazza San Marco, take a boat ride down the Grand Canal, and witness the impressive Doge’s Palace first hand. Discover the colourful Murano known for its artisanal glasswork and snap a picture underneath the Bridge of Sighs.

What to Eat: If seafood’s your thing, you’ve come to the right place. Try the Folpeti (baby octopus boiled with bayleaves and lemon, and served in a sandwich), sarde in saor (fried sardines flavoured with onions, vinegar, raisins and pine nuts) or spaghetti al nero di seppia (spaghetti with cuttlefish ink). What to Eat: Take time to savour the traditional risotto alla Milanese – a world-famous dish that includes creamy Arborio rice, saffron, grated cheese, white wine and butter. Jellyfish, or better still, gelatinous plankton (since some gelatinous species are actually not jellyfish), have become an indelible component

of our seas - the uninvited guests of several bathing areas each summer. Such primitive creatures, which are considered veritable living fossils since they first appeared over 600 million years ago (way before the dinosaurs), are inflicting all sorts of socio-economic impacts on coastal zones around the world. The stings inflicted to bathers each summer, and the consequent impact on the touristic amenity of an area, are just the tip of the iceberg. Some gelatinous species are capable of much worse. For instance, the nomadic jellyfish, a species

native of the Indian Ocean which has entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal in the early 1970’s, and which can reach the size of a large football, regularly shuts down electrical power stations in Israel by clogging the cooling water intake pipes, and closes down beaches in view of its nasty sting. The warty comb jelly (also known as the sea walnut) has crippled the anchovy and sardine fisheries in the Black Sea ever since its inadvertent introduction, through shipping, from North American waters.

It’s a given that scientists cannot be everywhere all the time… this would be ideal to monitor the occurrence of

jellyfish blooms. One way to achieve such ubiquity is through citizen science, which involves the formal or informal training of the general public to collect scientific data in the field on behalf of scientists. This cost-effective protocol is very popular, being deployed by scientists worldwide for different scopes, from the monitoring of bird populations to those of jellyfish, or even to alert scientists about the levels of atmospheric pollution through their smart phone.

The Spot the Jellyfish campaign has been conducted since 2010 by the Physical Oceanography Unit based at the University of Malta, being led by the

to date, since its inception, almost 1,500 jellyfish reports have been submitted by the public.

undersigned and colleagues within the same institute, on the back of seed funding received from the International Ocean Institiute (IOI), an international NGO. Through financial support from the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), a series of informative seaside panels have been installed on the most popular local beaches, soliciting the public to submit reports of any jellyfish individuals they encounter whilst bathing. The same artwork as the seaside panel has been printed in the form of posters and leaflets distributed among all local scuba diving clubs and other stakeholders, including the Malta National Aquarium.

To-date, since its inception, almost 1,500 jellyfish reports have been submitted by the public and 10 species of gelatinous

plankton previously unknown in our waters have been recorded, including stingers like the nomadic jellyfish, the compass jellyfish and the stunning hula skirt siphonophore, but also a variety of non-stingers, including the blue button, the crystal jellyfish and an array of comb jellies, bringing the total of jellyfish species known from our waters to around 30. Perhaps the most charismatic of all jellyfish species is the by-the-wind sailor, a veritable miniature living sailing boat which normally blooms during summer.

A growing technological arsenal is supporting the scientific effort to collect more information about jellyfish. A smart phone app (MED JELLY) was launched in the summer of 2014, giving users indispensable

information on how to treat the stings of specific jellyfish species as well as useful logistical information on every local beach, including a list of amenities present on the same beach, accessibility and local weather conditions. Users can also submit reports of jellyfish encountered on local beaches, along with accompanying photos, through the same application, which is available for free download on both Android and iPhone platforms.

Within the same project, a jellyfish dispersion model is being developed by the same university institute, using the rationale behind an oil spill mode, forecasting the trajectory being taken by a jellyfish bloom once it’s spotted. In so doing, the model gives three-to-four days notice of the beaches where the bloom is most likely to hit and thus providing coastal managers with welcome foresight on the same issue.

The University’s participation within this project has made possible the publication of a diverse array of popular science tools, including waterproof factsheets and sting treatment booklets, indispensable tools for the beach buff in the advent

of a jellyfish bloom. The treatment advised on the published booklets is based on the latest scientific evidence emerging within different studies and is specific to each jellyfish species. This debunks the myth that one-treatment-fits-all where jellyfish stings are concerned, with a dose of vinegar being a panacea for all sorts of stings, when in actual fact, the chemical might even exacerbate matters for such stings, such as those of the common mauve stinger species.

The latest related contraption to be developed is a jellyfish dispersion model, again publicly available through the MED-JELLYRISK project website, which gives users a three-day forecast of the anticipated trajectory to be taken by a jellyfish bloom once its sighted within our waters, thus providing sorely-needed foresight to our beach managers by underscoring the most likely beaches where the bloom will make landfall. Such a model is being validated through the use of surface drifters, devices which communicate their position continuously through satellite tracking. The monitoring of jellyfish blooms has just become a tad more sophisticated it seems.

An interesting and reasonably recent addition to the local culinary scene is Gululu, styled a “Casual Maltese Diner”, in Spinola Bay, St Julian's. This unassuming restaurant located by the water’s edge in one of Malta’s prime locations cooks Maltese food.

This must seem very normal to travellers visiting the Maltese islands for the first time, yet until not too long ago the eateries where one

could sample Maltese food were far and few between. Even then most were very traditional and focused more often than not on preparing the traditional fenkata – spaghetti with rabbit sauce, followed either by fried or stewed rabbit and fried potatoes. Why? “Possibly because of an inferiority complex” explains Julian Sammut, proprietor of Gululu, “many countries, especially small ones, which have been colonised and ruled over for centuries and have in many ways emulated and aspired to be like their foreign rulers tend to be ashamed of their national food. This is also what happened along the Spanish Costas when mass tourism descended upon them in the early 1960s. To make matters worse many of the chefs who worked in Malta’s first hotels were British Navy trained and whilst they were hard to beat when it came to a good roast or pudding, most were often at a loss as to how to handle and present typical local ingredients.”

Gululu offers a varied menu which includes both traditional and modern dishes, as in food which is made, as much as possible, using only typical ingredients and produce grown in Malta. This means

that one can savour the more common dishes like rabbit, baked pasta and fish soup, yet also enjoy a variety of fritters, fresh salads and of course fish. During July a Festa tat-Tonn, Tuna Feast, is held with specially concocted dishes using fresh tuna. “In my eyes hospitality is all about ensuring that whoever crosses our thresh hold is served well and leaves happy and satisfied. In my books this means that wherever possible we cater for many different needs and expectations whether our patrons are after a tasty snack accompanied by a beer or a full meal with a bottle of Malta’s exquisite wine.” Two years ago Gululu built a traditional

stone oven similar to the ones which bake Malta’s unrivalled bread in villages across the island. With this came the renaissance of the ftira was very popular yet now rarely found outside Gozo, Malta’s smaller sister island. The ftira is, simply explained, similar to the Neapolitan pizza, a dough base with different toppings baked at a very high temperature. The pastry of the ftira is more rustic than that of the pizza and crunchier. Its origins are similar to the Arab fatira, the word, of Semitic roots, literally means to “break the fast”. Last month to couple the ftajjarija – after extending the premises by taking over the place next door – Gululu has launched a

Pulpetterija. Pulpetti are to the Maltese what Polpette are to the Italians, Boulettes to the French and Burgers to the Germans and the rest of the world.

“Pulpetti have been a favourite food for Maltese families for decades if not centuries. The thrifty mother would make these little cakes with her left overs or cheap cuts of meat or fish, and when cooked up in a moist sauce or gravy, and accompanied with fresh, crusty bread, they certainly bring a big, broad smile to the hungry family’s faces,” explains Julian excitedly, “Pulpetti offer a cook so many opportunities to create, so many flavours to combine. Of course at Gululu we do not use left overs, rest assured,” chuckles Julian, “on the contrary we seek to use the best and the freshest to guarantee a moist succulent bite, which is the secret behind a good pulpetta.”

Gululu’s pulpetti menu includes beef, pork, rabbit, lamb, salt cod, chicken, and Maltese sausage, all served in a crispy ftira bun or just with a salad, and hand-cut local potato chips.

They were taken on a private viewing of an apartment at Ta’ Monita, and as they say; the rest is history. “It was a tough tussle but Malta was the best place with its history, culture, hospitable and English-speaking people,” Jeremy recalls.

Life at Ta’ Monita is a real dream come true for the Masons. To them the views, the vistas of endless sea, the peace that reigns, the quality of the restaurants just round the corner, the abundant fish, the shops, are all bonuses to the quality of the development. They also look forward to many happy days when their children and grandchildren come to visit.

Life and its beauty and enjoyment can be missed in our madly hectic lives. To the Masons bliss came just when they planned. I left their idyll with them sitting on their terrace overlooking the limpid sea at Marsascala Bay. My reaction to their choice mirrored that of their friends: pure green jealousy.

T his is not a developer’s dream or a writer wined and dined enough to imagine or stretch the truth just a trifle beyond

belief. This is reality as related to me by the Masons, a most charming couple who have just purchased an apartment at Ta’ Monita and think that this place in Marsascala beats Madeira, Sicily, Portugal and has many more attributes than Norfolk. For the moment, the Masons will not be permanent residents at Ta’ Monita but they hope to be there often before they retire there.

Jeremy and Nadia Mason are both academics with very scientific backgrounds. Both worked at King’s in London for many years and enjoyed life to the fullest, but as the years went by they both decided that they needed to slow down.

Life in London was great, social life very hectic and theatre land and concerts within easy reach. But they felt this was

too hectic and they hardly had time to enjoy relaxing and feeling fulfilled.

They bought a house in Norfolk in a rustic beautiful village with a population of just a few hundreds. They started visiting at weekends and enjoying the quiet and the lovely garden.

Then five years ago Nadia retired completely from academia and Jeremy semi-retired. And they realised that one big thing was missing in their life still—sun, glorious sunshine, life-giving light most days of the year. And the search was on from Spain to Morocco via Sicily.

They were seriously considering Madeira for their idyllic home and attended an ex-pat fair which should have had Madeira as its main focus, however following an uncanny turn of events they happened to meet a man from Malta instead who invited them to visit our sunny isles.

A repeat information session by Belair Property – in collaboration with Mazars Malta – for owners who rent out their property, was held recently, following the first session held some months ago and which was oversubscribed.

The information session – for which attendance was free – covered various topics of relevance for these owners and addressed issues such as taxation and licensing when renting out property. The session acted as a tutorial for those present with real life examples of different scenarios, such as when is Value Added Tax (VAT) is to be levied and at what rate and the available options of how one is to declare income.

Commenting after the event, Belair Property managing director, Ian Casolani said that the idea of this information session came about as part of the feedback their letting team gets from property owners. “Undoubtedly, one can get lost in the myriad of administrative processes, and we felt we should give added value to our clients by providing a free information session on these subjects. An Expat in Malta

Online GamingJohn Dawson may very well be a fictional character, but the benefits enjoyed in Malta are nothing other than real.

It is three o’clock in the afternoon. John Dawson is strolling round the Departure Lounge of the Malta

International Airport. He is excited to get back to his office and embark on his new project. He had heard that Malta is a popular jurisdiction with respect to online gaming, but never in his wildest dreams did he imagine that this little island is the leading European jurisdiction in this industry.

It was by pure coincidence that John ended up at one of the country’s yearly online gaming expos and conferences. He had walked into the lobby of his hotel, which was buzzing with all sorts of entrepreneurs involved in the online

gaming business. Indeed, the hotel in which he was staying was hosting the conference and was choc-a-block with the most influential people in Europe’s online gaming industry.

Whilst doing his last minute window shopping before boarding his plane, John fondly recalls meeting the owners of some of these global online gaming companies, all of which have their operations based in Malta for a multitude of reasons that make Malta, without a doubt, the best jurisdiction in which to set up business. Many of these companies have, in the matter of a decade, grown from fledgling companies into world leaders in the industry. Together they

have trained thousands of programmers, web designers and other specialised staff. They have opened customer care centres with representatives communicating with their clients in a multitude of languages, developed the highest levels of due diligence and anti-money laundering practices and, all of this, locally. John recalls having left the seminar overwhelmed by the sheer concentration of highly-trained specialists present on the island and knowing that, should his investors be willing to embark on this project, he would not be short of staff.

After a weekend of intensive training about the online gaming industry, John now knows that Malta was the first European country to regulate online gaming and that, since its inception into the EU in 2004, like a modern version of David vs Goliath, Malta has battled the largest European jurisdictions. The latter have waged wars in the European Courts of Justice to retain their monopolies in their respective countries and postpone the introduction of free movement of online gaming. Despite this, Malta is committed to remaining the leading jurisdiction in the industry. Both the Government and the industry have invested heavily in bringing the IT infrastructure to the highest international standard. Indeed, while it is a small island, Malta is extensively connected to the international internet grid through a number of submarine cables and satellite systems. Coupled

"What an interesting weekend!" John thinks whilst calling his legal advisor to thank him for all the introductions made over the weekend. Although he was not so surprised to see him moderate a discussion on the legal benefits enjoyed by Maltese gaming companies, John was impressed when his advocate explained the spectacular low gaming

tax and license fees applicable to such companies. Combined with Europe’s best net effective tax rate applicable to non-resident shareholders of companies established in Malta, there is no doubt in John’s mind that Malta is the place to be if someone wants to succeed in the online gaming industry. After a friendly chat with his advocate and assuring him that John will soon be back in Malta to discuss all the legal matters involved in establishing an online gaming company, it is time to switch off his phone and head back home. On his next visit he will definitely bring Anna and the kids, and maybe do some house hunting.

Fossilised remains that complement the petrified riverbed at the Maqlaq Fault were also found within the area.

Unique dwarf elephant fossilised finds located in the vicinity of the Neolithic temples of Mnajdra (Ġgantija Phase 3600 – 3000 BC), Ħagar Qim (Tarxien Phase 2500 – 1500 BC) and the Misqa Water Wells, all formerly believed to be of Phoenician origins (Circa 1200 -1000 BC), truly give the locality a special mention in history. The ancient prehistory water wells as known as 'il-Misqa', the watering hole, are believed to have quenched the thirst of the temple builders as also found mid way between these two majestic temples.

Neolithic ruins that complement, Malta’s largest free-standing dolmen, are located but a mere few kilometers away at Misraħ is-Sinjura.

Phoenician and Palo Christian rock graves and catacombs are found in abundance within the neighboring locality of San Niklaw, also the site of RAF Krendi, (a former British WWII airfield), and where the sea caverns beneath these sites add a mystical sensation to these spiritual surroundings.

Grandmaster De Redin's coastal tower and Governor General Sir Water Norris' Congreve memorial, evidence of past military rule, overlook and impose onto the natural pristine environment beneath.

In 1618, il-Qrendi was proclaimed a parish by Maltese Bishop Baldassare Cagliares, after having served for many a year as the Zurrieq vice parish, and where, in the year 1620 parish priest Rev John Mary Camilleri started the building of his church, completed in 1655, some 30 years later.

Hardly had a few years elapsed from the church’s completion, when in the year 1677 AD, the Very Rev parish priest Domnic Formosa once again opted to enlarge his parish church. Work was started in 1685 on the designs of the very well known architect of the time, Lorenzo Gafa’, and were completed in 1712, some 27 years later.

The Qrendi parish church was to be consecrated to the Assumption Into Heaven of Santa Marija, Mother of God (Qrendi’s Parton) on 13th October 1782, 70 years after its completion by Bishop Labini.

The Santa Marija feast is celebrated annually on 15th August, whilst that of Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated in the first week in July. Village feasts serve to blend religious devotion, pyrotechnics abilities, band marches and street decorations, together with joyful manifestations.

With both Qrendi band societies being accredited as the 2015 Malta Champions competing in the IX Malta Mechanised Ground Firework Festival (St Mary, BC) and the 2015 Malta and International Champions

competing in the Malta International Fireworks Festival for aerial pyrotechnics (Lourdes, BC), a visit to the village feast, both on the eve and day of its celebration, are opportunities not to be missed.

With the rich religious heritage found in the locality, the Madonna tal-Ħniena (Our Lady of Mercy) sanctuary, the Santa Katerina (St Catherine), Salvatur (Our Saviour), Sant’ Anna (Saint Anne) and Madonna tal Grazzja (Our Lady of Grace) chapels and the San Mattew Chapel and crypt, are evidence of the village’s rich religious devotion found within the locality.

Life within the Qrendi confines has been recorded as far back as the Early to Later Pleistocene times (circa 2.588 million to 11.700 years ago) and where dwarf elephants, hippopotami, bears, stags, foxes and giant dormouse fossilised bones had in 1858, been excavated from the 'bones caves' at the nearby hard coralline limestone quarries in Wied il-Magħlaq during the excavation of materials required for the construction of the Dock Yards in the Valletta harbour.

Medieval Knights of Malta fortified houses, formerly occupied by Italian Knight Guarena and the German knight Guttenberg, are evidence of their love for the village of Qrendi, and where many of their donations of religious work of art still adorn the village’s places of worship.

Torri Cavalier (the octagonal tower) located within the village core, with its imposing 'drop balconies' aimed at the buildings' defence, together with Torri Sciutu and the WWII machine gun post (Kamra it-Tonda) in Wied iż-Żurrieq, are the strongest of evidence that il-Qrendi played in the defense of our mother land throughout its history.

But Qrendi’s beauty is not solely evolved around its heritage and history, but is complemented by a country side rich in flora and fauna, with an abundance of Carob trees, potato and onion fields, and the legendary Maqluba doline, where Malta’s national tree, the Sandarac Gum Tree (Għargħar) grows to its heart’s content.

“We’ve rigged the line to a rock and it stretches 12m out like a bridge to the other side of the cave. Harness on. Shoes off. As I step onto the wobbling highline, I feel like a beginner again. My heartbeat accelerates. “Breathe. Calm your mind. Let go of fear. Find balance. It’s like meditation. Once you’re on the edge of survival you push yourself further than before. I have to be better than myself!” [01]

Cortizo left his hometown in Salvador, Brazil, over four years ago, to travel around Europe and he took his slackline wherever he went.

“I lived in Spain, Portugal and Italy, meeting up with different slacklining enthusiasts by contacting them through social media. I’ve practiced the sport with the best slackliners in Europe. It’s incredible to experience different cultures, make friends with locals, learn new languages and connect with people who have the same passion for the sport as I do,” says Cortizo.

Slacklining is a balance sport, where a flat stretchy band is tied between two points and walked across. The line moves, its dynamic unlike a tight rope.

“I usually practice tricklining, where stunts like backflips are performed on the line. This requires a lot of practice and perfecting your technique. A highline is more extreme and is set up several meters above the ground,” he explains. [04]

Security and respect are of utmost importance to any slackliner. “We are respectful towards the environment and the people where we set up the lines. This is an extreme sport and demands experience and caution,” says his companion, Alain Barbet.

Alain is a French slackliner who, along with his partner Emanuelle, joined Jorge for a 10-day expedition scouting epic slackline setups tucked away around the Maltese islands. Alain and Manue, as she’s more colloquially known, researched the ‘Slackliner Malta’ community Facebook page, which is run by Jorge and his dedicated slackliner crew, before coming to Malta. They used Google Maps to discover Malta’s picturesque coves, creeks and bays scattered along the craggy coastline.

They rigged up creative slacklines and indulged in the combination of hidden

spots, the local culture’s fresh, healthy food, rich underwater wildlife and friendly scenes.

The turquoise waters, white sand and lush surroundings of Comino’s Blue Lagoon were a perfect backdrop for them to rig up and zone out. “The environment impacts the extent to which you are able to prepare yourself mentally to walk the line,” explains Cortizo. The slackliners were careful not to disturb others enjoying

Comino’s pristine shoreline and only rigged up at quieter times of the day. [03]

Another adventure saw the crew scaling down the side of rocky slopes to discover a stunning 300m long, narrow cliff-bound inlet of the Għasri Valley in Gozo. “I felt intimidated by the beauty of the surroundings,” says Barbet. “I had seen pictures of the place and I was determined to explore it. It was beyond expectation.” They set up two lines

Jorge is determined to motivate people to take up this sport and bring together an association of slackliners in Malta. He was one of the first to practice slackline in his hometown in Salvador, Brazil, and now the association has reached close to 4,000 followers with around 2,000 practicing slackliners.

To anyone considering this sport, Jorge advises, “Look up the slacklining community in your area and ask them for help when just starting out. Don’t give up! Once you get a taste of the thrill it’s just a matter of time till you master the sport! [02]

“My favourite slackline was L-Aħrax cave in Mellieħa,” says Cortizo. This unique spot is a spectacular crater with a blow hole, where sea water drifts in and out of a small natural stone arch. A streak of light seeps into the cave that reflects off the deep crystal clear blue waters. As one can imagine, the exquisite setting heightens the slacklining experience, taking it to another level.

“A mishmash of fear and excitement has some of them pacing in circles, while others are relaxed and confident as they anchor their equipment. Luiz Talavera,

down from Paris, joins the tour, crosses the line singing, and dares to pull stunts. It’s exhilarating!” Jorge recalls. [01]

Whenever Jorge and his friends rig up a slackline in areas like Valletta, people gather to watch them out of curiosity. Jorge encourages spectators to take the plunge and give it a shot.

We recommend packing sun block and swimming gear at all times – just in case.

Try to get back in time to shower and change to enjoy the evening – a lot of the hotels on the island offer various entertainment with regards to nightclubs and in-house restaurants, but if you feel up to it and are in the mood to party, then why not head out to the heart of Malta’s nightlife? – Paceville. Heavily populated with nightclubs, bars, pubs and restaurants it is considered to be Malta’s nightlife capital.

Għajn Tuffieha Bay, more commonly known as Golden Bay, is quite remarkable scenery-wise as it has clay slopes and cliffs, and can be accessed by a flight of stairs directly from the car park. This bay is a trendy spot and popular during the peak months of summer. Numerous facilities are available, such as umbrellas and sun beds – and, if you’re feeling adventurous, you will also find water sports facilities and trekking opportunities all around.

Take a leisurely walk outside Mdina’s fortified walls and head to the Domvs Romana. The current museum building does not only preserve some of the most precious Roman remains, but also allows visitors to get a glimpse of life in a Roman domestic household, including the various aspects of a Roman family ranging from the actual division of roles in a family, to fashion, education, entertainment, food and drink.

Day 2I personally enjoy visiting museums or historical buildings and, believe me, Malta has its fair share… so why not dedicate the next day of your holiday to a bit of sightseeing?

Mdina – The Silent City. This is Malta’s medieval, walled ex-capital and is easily spotted sitting majestically on a hill towards the centre of the island. The views are magnificent, and just walking through the narrow streets, you can easily see why silence reigns supreme there. Mdina is home to the Natural History Museum, the Mdina Cathedral, as well as several palazzos which have now been opened to the public.

Day 3Why not spend a day in Valletta? If you try to get there early there would be ample time for a delicious cappuccino and a couple of Maltese pastizzi. These are diamond shaped pies which are filled with ricotta or a spicy pea filling, and baked to golden brown crispy perfection.

A visit to St John’s Co Cathedral is definitely a must. Designed by the Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar, this was the convent church of the Knights of the Order of St John and today houses ‘The Beheading of St John’ by Caravaggio. The church has some fascinating features, like the three clocks on its façade; one face displaying the time, one showing the day of the week and the third indicating the date. Once inside, the superb extravagance and baroque style is simply breathtaking.

Ms Said, a rising star in the opera world, is currently studying at one of the world’s top

conservatories, Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Malta International Airport plc will be helping her invest in her education as part of a sponsorship agreement.

The Malta Airport Foundation was set up last November to invest in cultural, touristic and environmental projects that enhance Malta, improve the tourism product and give back to the local community.

The Malta Airport Foundation is part of the company’s strategic decision to

Ms Said was among five young Maltese opera singers nominated by tenor Joseph Calleja in 2013 to join a prestigious summer academy in Salzburg - an initiative that was sponsored by the Malta International Airport and the Austrian Embassy.

Most recently, Ms Said performed with Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja at a Christmas concert last December.

IS IT A SPIDER OR A CRAB?They are not as quick as terrestrial spiders, nor do they build webs, however they do have long legs like spiders which gives them their common name 'spider crabs'. They are not classified as spiders though, they are marine crustaceans and are actually the largest arthropods in the world, reaching 3.8m from claw to claw.

As all crustaceans, their body is covered with an exoskeleton which allows them to protect their internal soft body from predators.

This limits the growth of such animals and so in order for the animal to grow, it must moult its exoskeleton and build a new one through the growing phase.

During the last two months, our female spider crab (let's call her Brenda) lost her appetite, which indicated that it was her time to moult. We isolated her from her other tank mates to protect her

during this vulnerable phase. Within just two days, she moulted her entire old skeleton and grew a considerably bigger, brand new exoskeleton. Isolation is imperative, since their new exoskeleton

is extremely soft at the beginning of the growing phase and would therefore be harmed by even the smallest fish. In the wild, these crabs are required to find a safe hiding place for this process to take place naturally.

Two weeks later, Brenda has been put back into her previous display tank and is happily greeting her friends with her new exoskeleton.

Our male spider crab (let's call him Chris) is about to undergo the same process, however is taking slightly longer than Brenda... procrastination is definitely a 'male thing'.

Spider crabs are known as living fossils since they have managed to survive almost identically from their ancestors hundreds of millions of years ago. Not only have they not evolved, but they can live up to 100 years. They tend to move to the depths of over 50m especially during migration, and can therefore tolerate low water temperatures.

AIR MALTA INCREASING FLIGHTS TO MALTA THIS WINTER (NOV-MAR’16)

Air Malta will be increasing operations on its Malta based routes this winter and is planning to carry more tourists to the islands whilst utilising fewer aircraft.

A ircraft are there to fly, and seeing opportunities in this area, the management has drafted plans to

increase aircraft utilisation hours this winter and operate the same amount of 4,452 flight sectors with seven, instead of eight, aircraft.

Air Malta’s ultimate aim is to do more with less and increase the productivity of its assets. Various initiatives are being taken, such as operating more night flights, carrying out more maintenance during the night, improving aircraft turnaround times and modifying flight departure times. Air Malta reviews the profitability of all flights routes and optimises its capacity accordingly.

EVENTS & NEWS about malta's national airline

Aircraft are fundamental but a costly resource to any airline. All 12 Air Malta aircraft are leased in, with each lease costing millions of Euro each year. In the last few years, Air Malta leased out two aircraft to foreign operators in order to recover part of its leasing costs.

Air Malta is in the process of building a sustainable basis so that in future it will be in a position to grow its network and fleet in a methodical manner according to requirements.

All the initiatives have to be understood in the light of the constraints imposed by the Restructuring Plan agreed with the EU Commission. This plan limits Air Malta by the number of flights it can operate on certain profitable routes.

Air Malta will continue to be the backbone of Maltese tourism, assisting the local operators whilst, at the same time, supporting the local community and other business enterprises all year round.

THE REBIRTH OF FORT ST ANGELO

When you want to accommodate the leaders of dozens of countries in a secure environment, where better than a fort? Work is near completion on the renovation of one of the finest historic buildings in Malta, Fort St Angelo, soon to be a host venue for the Commonwealth Summit in November 2015.

The Fort, in its majestic position in the Grand Harbour, has existed since at least the 13th century. It was the seat of the Grand Master

in the 16th century, providing vital defence against Turkish forces during the Great Siege of Malta of 1565.

History seeps from its walls. After Napoloeon’s forces ousted the Knights, the Fort acted as headquarters for the French army, for two years before the British arrived in 1800. The British army presence of the 19th century gave way to the British navy in the 20th century, when the fort was actually re-designated as a ship, known at first as HMS Egmont and later HMS St Angelo.

The impregnability of Fort St Angelo was confirmed once more during the Second World War. It withstood 69 direct hits between 1940 and 1943.

Although the building was to eventually fall into disrepair, there was never any chance of it fading away. With great pride the Maltese are bringing it back to life. A restoration and conservation project is being carried out with €13.4m of support from the European Regional Development Fund.

Eventually, Heritage Malta will open the doors of Fort St Angelo to the public, but that won’t be until it has played host to leaders from every continent.

Fort St Angelo will be used as a retreat during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Malta from 27th to 29th November. The retreat is when the 53 government leaders break away from executive sessions to meet informally.

Both the Queen and the Prince of Wales shall attend CHOGM in Malta, along with the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Cornwall. This is the second time in a decade that Malta has been chosen to host the summit.

For Fort St Angelo it will be both a rebirth and yet another moment in its illustrious history.

Air Malta is the official carrier for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

The leaders of the 53 Commonwealth countries meet every 2 years.

Sri Lanka hosted the last meeting in 2013.

Malta will host the next meeting in November 2015.

The Queen will attend CHOGM in Malta, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

How long have you been working with Air Malta?I have been working with Air Malta for 17 years. I joined the company in 1998 as Head Internal Audit. I remained in that position till October 2014 when I moved to Contract Management which forms part of Corporate Services.

Three words that describe your job?I would describe my job as interesting, complex and varied. What is the biggest challenge of your job?Being a large public company by local standards, procurement and contracting attracts the attention of a number of

stakeholders, including the suppliers themselves. One of the biggest challenges is the transparency of the whole process, from the initial drafting of the RFP and Tender documents, through the evaluation of proposals and the eventual selection of suppliers. Keeping up with sometimes restricted timeframes is always a challenge that cannot be ignored.

Which is your favourite destination and why?My favourite destination remains France. Besides the beautiful landscapes and enchanting cities, I am in love with French food and especially wine.

What are your favourite spots or tips for anyone visiting Malta?Notwithstanding the size of the Maltese Islands, the abundance of cultural and historical placed makes our country one of the most exciting places to visit.

My favourite place to visit remains the Palace Armoury where one can see history unravel as you move from one exhibit to the other.

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTIONAlcohol consumed at high altitude can have a stronger effect than usual. Cabin crew are

legally empowered to refuse serving any alcohol to an intoxicated passenger and to anyone

under the age of 18. In extreme cases, crew may also temporarily confiscate the passenger‘s

own drinks so that the passenger would not become a nuisance to the other passengers and

crew. Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit embarkation

or the carriage of drunken passengers. But once you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight

Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed,

the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event

that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic

beverages in-flight goes against Air Malta policy.

SMOKINGSmoking is prohibited from when you leave the terminal building

until you arrive to the terminal building. Smoking is allowed in

designated areas only. Smoking is not allowed during any phase

of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. Should you be aware

of a passenger who has smoked in the toilet during the flight,

please inform the cabin crew immediately so that they can

check for any undetected fires. The use of electronic cigarettes

(e-cigarettes) is also not allowed on board Air Malta flights.

Similarly, the use of naked flames on and around the aircraft is

also prohibited.
