THE INDIAN
The Second Edition of the Indian Intentional Model United Nations, Asia’s largest Youth Conference.
The Indian, IIMUN’s official Newsletter August 12-16 2013
If I had to, I‘d describe the last
three days with the words
‗busy‘ and ‗tired‘. There have
been things I‘ve loved and
well… not-so-loved , about the
IIMUN 2013.
Among the th ings I‘ve loved
are my brilliant team, and how
well they‘ve handled
themselves, the levels of debate
that go on in most committees,
how everyone is usually
dressed so well, and how
fantastic all the Chairs are.
There have been several
glitches along the way, but
we‘re young and foolish and
it‘s okay for us to make
mistakes because that‘s how
we‘re supposed to learn.
During the Opening
Ceremony, Rishabh Shah, the
President of the IIMUN 2013,
told us how we should
remember that we‘re all under
the age of 21
and it‘s going to be just fine if
It has been a
wonderful journey
since 2012, though we
have faced lots of
highs and lows,
IIMUN has always
been close to my heart.
Organizing the second
ed ition of IIMUN in
Mumbai, the city I
grew up in was
overwhelming. Since
2012, we have
traversed and travelled
across various cities
and I am proud to
announce that IIMUN
will be present in 10
d ifferent cities across
India by the end of this
year. It has truly been a
fantastic journey. I
would like to thank
every stakeholder—
parents, schools, the
government and other
officials, and the
delegates without
whom the conference
things are not perfect all the time.
I‘d like to tip my metaphorical hat
to him.
So here‘s to all the writing, the
photographs, the arguing, the
long lunches, the sneaking off
whenever one could manage, the
Chairs, and the Organising
Committee for doing such a great
job and being so warm.
And here‘s to getting lost while
trying to locate Expo and waiting
forever for the elevators to take
you to your floor at Centre One.
Here‘s to wittily titled Working
Papers, deadlines, and not
meeting them. Here‘s also to
Unmoderated Caucuses and
passing chits about random
things in Committee, and
Resolutions, and Emergencies,
and Crisis which you know
would never actually happen.
Here‘s to Social Night and how it
will be the topic of d iscussion
forever after.
Here‘s to all I‘ve learnt and all the
difference it makes.
-Isha Maniar
P.S. A special shout out goes to
Binaisha D‘Souza who‘s helped
so much with everything from
coffee to flash drives to bandaids.
I will forever be in awe of how
nice you are.
The President‘s Address
From the Editor-in-Chief‘s Desk
wouldn't have been
possible. I would like to
thank each and every
person involved in the
making of Asia‘s
Largest Youth
Conference—The
Indian International
Model United Nation.

The Opening
Ceremony ' You know I'm going to
remember tonight?' - Leslie Lewis,
the Mascot of IIMUN during a
performance of Hum Rahe Ya Na
Rahe Kal, as the auditorium was
on its feet.
The evening began after a wait
of about 45 minutes with
Cyrus Broacha complaining
about the traffic outside
Sophia's Bhabha Hall. He
made way for Ad itya
Thackeray who addressed the
MUNers about some much
needed change in Indian
society, especially the
government. We thought it
was a bit sneaky of him to
campaign for elections at the
opening ceremony, but we
take what we get.
Suresh Menon joined Cyrus,
and both proceeded to act like
they knew everything there
was to know about Indian
dances, before the ethnic dance
troop actually came on.
Later Rakeysh Omprakash
Mehra, who gets my vote for
being the most chilled out
person ever, took questions
from the delegates. He
criticised jingoism, rhetorics
and religion, which he claimed
cheeses him off. He also talked
about how movies don't
change nations, and how it's
people who do the actual
changing.
Leslie Lewis came on after,
and had everyone on their feet,
cheering him on as he belted
out 'Mehbooba' and 'Yaaron
Dosti...'And that's how the
beginning of the IIMUN
ended.

TH E SECU RITY
CO U N CIL The UNSC members all looked really
comfortable with their big leather chairs
and the table, like a real board of
d irectors, but what followed was
successful debate similar to an op en mic
night paying homage to ―Yo mamma‖.
There was a time where the committee
was evenly split right down the midd le,
out of the 18 delegates present in
committee, 9 of them wanted to table the
first agenda. After great persuasion from
the delegate of Russia, the committee just
about steered away from it, much to the
d ismay of the delegate of China and
Saudi Arabia. This started a series of
challenges against China, Saudi Arabia
and even Germany. Apparently, being on
the brink of nuclear war wasn‘t worth the
time of some delegates who wanted to
d iscuss terrorism.
Finally, the committee agreed that the
situation in the South and East China Sea
was deserving of their attention. After an
extremely intense challenge between
Russia and Saud i Arabia, about nothing
in particu lar, one of the delegates of
Russia needed to excuse himself.
―Delegate of Russia, d id the delegate of
Saudi Arabia make you piss your pants?‖
said the Moderator. With a sheepish look
on his face, and a room fu ll of laughing
delegates around him, the delegate was
excused . ―The delegate of Saud i Arabia is
definitely passionate, and knows what
he‘s talking about‖, stated a delegate from
the UNSC.
The Chair speaks highly of the two most
prominent delegates, Russia and Saudi
Arabia. Both formed their own blocs,
while working on working papers.
During a brief gap where the working
papers were being printed , there was an
even briefer motion for entertainment.
The delegates of Russia were ordered to
say 5 nice things about the delegates of
Saudi Arabia, and vice versa. ―We‘re not
having trouble thinking of compliments, we‘re
just thinking of which to choose from. This
ended any and all d isputes between these two
delegates.
The UNSC is by far the most important
committee in the entire conference and it lives
up to the hype. We will keep a close eye on
this committee (hopefully), and hopefu lly it
will be as entertaining was it was today.
Nishaant
United Nations‘ Children‘s Fund
UNICEF was a p leasantly surprising
committee for the Press to be a part of.
The delegate of Iraq apparently feels that the
chair is ―cheating‖, well delegate that is not a
statement you make to the chair (or to the
press) and also you cannot call the delegate of
Palestine the ―fake delegate of Palestine‖, but
that‘s just my opinion.
The delegate of Congo you need to control
your hunger pangs as the only question you
ask in committee is ―When are we getting
food?‖ and you ate a piece of the sandwich the
Chair was eating, bu t again maybe that‘s just
me.
The use of personal pronouns was increasing
with every moment when the Vice Chair had
to threaten the delegates to refrain from using
personal pronouns or their lunch break would
be delayed . However, it seems the delegate of
Cuba prefers using personal pronouns rather
than getting a lunch break after which she was
barred from the committee.
In other news, we have a CID officer in the
making, as the delegate of Belgium prefers
solving the case of the mysterious chit rather
than paying attention to the proceed ings of
committee.
The resolution passed was like ―Spongebob as
it had many holes in it‖, as put by the Chair. A
chit passed to the chair by the delegate of
Portugal was intercepted . The chit read , ―I
want fu ll worth of my money but do not wish
to speak‖.
Also, the delegate of Sweden how do you
expect the committee to go on smoothly if you
want the Vice Chair to be barred from the
committee! The delegate of USA seems to
have figured out how it is that one can stay in
shape even after taking two-hour long lunch
breaks. The committee doesn‘t have a lot of
hid ing places as we found the delegate of
Vietnam sitting beneath the table. Delegate of
USA is a true lad ies man as he danced with a
number of girls in committee and also asked
the Chair to dance. A good 1 hour of Motion
of Entertainment showed us the delegate of
South Korea do the Gangnam Style, and also
the delegate of Venezuela tell the chair ―I
don‘t care and you will have to dance‖, the
delegates of Iraq and Congo had a ―bum
fight‖ and in the end special thanks to the
Chair and Co-Chair of the Arab League for
spicing up the committee. Well done Chairs of
UNICEF your committee is on the right track.
Highlight: The Chair was quoted as saying,
―The delegate of Vietnam is apparently
speaking nonsense‖.

The
Historic
Security
Council
Historical Security
Council had quite an
eventful day. The
Chairs were highly
impressed by the
delegates in the
second day's session.
A special mention
must be given to the
delegates of
Netherlands for their
d istinct attitude that
set them apart from
the rest of the
delegation.
The highlight of the
day was probably the
heated tension
between the delegates
of USA and Russia.
USA would not stop
until her point was
accepted . However,
Russia had her at a
loss of words with his
funny yet firm
comments on USA's
interference with
other countries'
policies and her
unstoppable love for
oil resources.
A pre-notion set by
the delegates on the
first day turned
around as they
started to actively
participate. Overall,
the Chairs were
pleased with their as
a good sense of
humor always
lingered during
session along with a
progress in the
agenda.
The HSC had the
Chair of the UN ODC
come in as a
representative of
Saddam Hussein 's
government and he
gave the delegates an
ultimatum that he has
captured 20
Australian Nationals
who have conducted
unwarranted military
inspections on Iraq
and each one these
nationals were going
to be executed every
hour. The committee
moved into several
moderated & un-
moderated caucuses
to address the issue...

The
African Union
The African Union chaired by Gandhgar
Suryavanshi barely managed to move over
two agendas on the first day of the IIMUN
2013.
The first session saw the delegates of various
African countries trying to decode the
conflicts arising between Sudan and South
Sudan over the d istribution of oil and
agricu ltural products. In the second session,
the delegates d iscussed the ambitious p lan to
create a buffer zone between the two
countries and created two extremely similar
working papers.
While a d isorientated Delegate of Cameroon
whiled away time over the two days,
Delegates of Madagascar, Sudan, Algeria and
Somalia showcased their vast knowledge in
these d iscussions. Delegates of Ivory Coast,
Mozambique and USA seemed to agree with
every motion passed .
Day two, however, saw the Union facing
two crisis, both of which they handled
deftly. In a controversial move, USA offered
its assistance to South Sudan to curb its
humanitarian issues and even build an oil
p ipeline through Kenya. The delegate of
Sudan was visibly surprised at the
repercussions it would have on the economy
of the two countries.
The Committee also faced a guest delegate
representing South Sudan accusing North
Sudan of send ing in three armed men within
the boundary of South Sudan. With a heated
monologue, the Delegate of Sudan
convinced the Committee that unless proper
proof is not handed over, they should not
rile ou t fou l p lay or external attempts to
spoil relations between the two countries.
All in all, this made com mittees stick to the
agenda. They barely passed any chits around
and proposed no Motion of Entertainment.
Pretty much what a Session at the United
Nations would be!

THE IAEA
The Committee of IAEA proceeded with
the ongoing agenda on the second day, for
those who don‘t know what it is: too bad .
The most noteworthy part of my day was
the controversy created by the United
Kingdom. During the session, the Delegate
of UK sent a rather threatening message to
the delegate of DPRK, which said
something along the lines of ―We will w ipe
you off the map‖. Later, the Delegate of
UK was asked to apologise to the delegate
of DPRK; and he d id so, grudgingly.
The second day proved to be remarkably
effective as two resolutions were made,
one made by the USA and Japan, which
was rejected due to lack of support from
the other countries. The other resolution,
Resolu tion 1.0 was considered and carried
ahead; Angola and Turkey made it.
Amendments were made in order to add
some clauses or delete some from the draft.
And finally a draft was made considering
all necessary points. It included main
clauses such as DPRK to halt its Nuclear
Weapons‘ Program in a completely
irreversible manner; complete
d isarmament, participating more in 6 party
talks, Iran and Iraq to indulge in bilateral
talks with each other so as to maintain
peace and order.
As the session continued further, the
delegate of South Korea from the Legal
Committee intervened to apologise to the
delegate of DPRK of the IAEA because he
called DPRK a ‗filthy country‘.
At the end of the first half of the session,
the resolution received majority vote and
was approved by the Chair, and peace and
order was maintained in committee.
There was an Emergency that occurred
during the session; a reported drone attack
took p lace on Iran; the drone was
unmanned and named Zephyr.
Further investigations are going on.
Currently there is very little information on
the matter. Follow up is taking p lace. And I
cannot wait to see how things turn out.

WTO WTO starts on a very serious note early in
the morning. But, the seriousness just ends
right away as there are chits being passed
by the delegates of Russia and Egypt, w ith
their countries in a bilateral relationship in
reality.
Later, the Chair made a statement to the
delegate of Switzerland about his
cellphone being on silent, contrary to
yesterday where it continued to d isturb the
committee. And then the debate proceeds.
In the middle of the intense d iscu ssion
comes the Chair of the Legal Committee
along with the delegates of North and
South Korea to apologize to the delegates
of the same countries in WTO, since they
said some bitter things in their Motion of
Entertainment. It was a bit sad to watch.
Suddenly after some time the delegates
started leaving Committee and the Chair
had to leave in search of them so as to pass
the Working Paper. When the lost
delegates (Yemen and a few others) were
finally found, a Motion of Entertainment
was in the process of being passed on
suggestion of the Vice-Chairman. And
finally the fun began.
The delegates of France and Switzerland
grooved to Subah Hone Na De, with a lot
of hooting pouring in.
Later, it was time for confessions about
asking other delegates out for the
Ballroom, which resulted in the delegates
of Japan and Afghanistan voted as the
most popular couple.
All in all, a very eventful day.
P.S.: Delegate of Ethiopia, would you
please start d ressing in formals of some
sort? Soon.
-Nishi
Organization of
American States Abhishek Pillai chaired the OAS, and was
the youngest person in committee. The
agendas d iscussed were illicit d rug
trafficking, illicit arms trade, and terrorism
and border control.
The General Speakers List exhausted itself
four times over as none of the delegates
were ready to speak except the few
delegates making their statement at the
various moderated caucuses. Only after
extensive persuasion from the Chair, the
delegates added their names to the List.
The Chair had to deviate from the normal
procedure of the sessions several times
because of the repeated exhaustion of the
List and brief the delegates on what they
can pass motions on and the other various
ways of functioning of the sessions.
The delegate of Argentina had strong
opinions and spoke for most of the
motions (what a refreshing breath of fresh
air) w ith great confidence and kept calling
for motions, which kept failing because of
lack of votes.
Many delegates opposed to the statement
of legalization of drugs made by another
delegate. When an un-moderated caucus
was held , chaos stuck as all the delegates
were trying to over-power each others‘
voices, which resu lted in a lot of
d isagreements between them, lead ing to an
unresolved solution and the delegate of
Ecuador scream ing at everyone to ―shut
the hell up‖. Subtle.
The delegates of Chile and Bolivia both
stated to the press that they were falling
asleep in the respective chit conversations
that they had with us.
Two working papers were formed and
both were d iscussed in an oddly
synchronized manner, with most of the
delegates agreeing to the statements on the
working paper.
Overall, the sessions of the OAS proved to
be highly productive as all the delegates
worked effectively.

NATO
With a Chair as notorious, yet well informed and entertaining as Jay Guradia,
even serious sessions in NATO are forced to lighten up with his perfectly timed
innuendos.
Over the two days, this experienced Chair has addressed three working papers
covering and innumerable motions. Most of the sessions touched upon the
various issues Afghanistan is currently facing. With talks bordering around topics
like the illicit production of opium, equality of the sexes, awareness of the
elections and deployment of troops in the country, to the interpretations of the
Sashia Laws and Taliban rule, it was evident that all the delegates were up to date
with different situations in the world and were there to impress the Chair.
Discussions aside, the committee had its fair share of entertainment too. Starting
with a Motion of Entertainment that was passed by the Legal Committee,
Delegates of North and South Korea were made to apologise to the Delegates of
Russia and USA for a make-believe disruption in session.
Before breaking for lunch, the Chair of NATO and the Chairs of WTO entertained
the Delegates with jokes and games. In one such game to judge the best looking
boy and girl, Jay and OC Member, Nikita won with clear and majorities. When
asked whom she would like to take to the dance, the delegate of a certain country
almost instantly mentioned the Chair. (We love it when love blossoms.)
It was no surprise that NATO's first challenge got the Chair so excited. But
unfortunately, it did not live up to his expectations!
They concluded their light, yet extremely productive morning session with a mix
of serious talks and sarcastic digs at other with the delegates of Russia, Japan and
Denmark proposing the most motions and delegates of Germany and Bolivia
occasionally adding to the discussion.

LOK SABHA
The day began with an inspiring speech by
Rajeev Chandran, who also conveyed to the
young minds sitting before him a message
from the Secretary General of the UN,
followed by an interactive session. This pu t
the nervous first time MUN-ers at ease.
The firstsession the LokSabha began with
the explanation of the procedures by the
chairs. Here after the voting for article took
place where the 1st agenda d iscussing article
370 dealing with the history of Kashmir
slaughtered the 2nd
agenda of the left using
extremist with a majority of votes. During
the session all the commendable speeches
were rewarded by the throwing of
chocolates to the delegates who were
addressed as parliamentarians, being the
LokSabha by the chairs.
The first session of the LokSabha was rather
slow paced with not many working papers
being passed . But on the entertainment
front, this session had much to offer.
Especially during the Motion of
Entertainment when the volunteers and
parliamentarians danced on Harlem Shake
and on ChikniChameli.
During this the opposition was asked to be
more aggressive in their approach towards
the ruling party.
This is how the day ended for the LokSabha
– entertaining, productive and conclusive.
ASEAN
Words cannot do justice to describe what
happened in committee, or how delegates
from South East Asia arrived at their
various conclusions about the Cambodia-
Thailand border. It is a well-known fact that
the border that Cambodia and Thailand
share is a very controversial topic. The
d ispute is essentially about 4.6 km2 of land
of the The Preah Vihear temple that lies on
the Cambodia-Thailand border.
Several delegates opposed the delegate of
Russia‘s view about international aid , which
led to 4 challenges, by Indonesia, Thailand
and 2 by the delegate of China. These
challenges were futile as neither delegate
were ready to change their views. A lot of
solutions were thrown around committee.
Then the committee broke for lunch, and a
long lunch at that; during which the chair
was reported MIA by his delegates. The
hour and a half lunch break served as a vital
strategizing session for the 2 unofficial bu t
still very prominent blocs formed .
I had the opportunity to talk to some
delegates from this committee and realized
that some delegates cannot be reasoned
with, and are just p lain obnoxious. With a
topic like the Cambodia-Thailand border
one would expect the delegates of
Cambodia and maybe Thailand to take lead
on this agenda, bu t that wasn‘t the case in
ASEAN.
China and Russia seem to have some
vendetta against each other and have
emerged as the 2 prominent members of
this committee. Many have said that
ASEAN was the most ―happening‖
committee on the first day of IIMUN and I
hope that the committee lives up to its
name.

8 THE INTERNATIONAL PRESS
DISEC The best part of the day for the
delegates was when the
working paper was being
produced . This is the only time
when the know-it-all delegate
of China or the super
enthusiastic delegate of DPRK
does not dominate the
committee. On the first d ay,
the delegate of Ukraine
introduced a working paper,
followed by a paper by USA
and South Korea. These papers
get shot down as DPRK and
China had no benefit from the
paper. With an easy end to the
day, the first paper was
passed .
A fresh day started off with
fresh energy with the same
agenda but this time with a
twist. An emergency situation
where the vice president of US
was kidnapped by Laos and
demanded that DPRK keeps
their nukes, Dalai Lama is
returned to China and
Arunachal Pradesh is given to
China. This was dealt with in
the first d irective itself.
Followed by a working paper
for the d ispute between south
and North Korea. Well of
course the delegate of North
Korea was not happy with it
but it certainly got its votes.
As sincere and committed the
DISEC team was, there still
were unmods turning into
intense conversations on one
side and a sleepy bunch more
interested in mobile games in
the other.
Although, our fellow delegates
do have a life outside DISEC
topics such as the excitement
that rose in the blood of the
delegate of Brazil about a chit
he got questioning his
sexuality making him wanting
to 'Frame' it and kept as a
souvenir.
It seems like the resolution is
still to be found to this agenda.

ECOSOS C.S.W. With a surprisingly even male
to female ratio, the
Commission on the Status of
Women should be heaven on
Earth for any feminist! But the
repetitive arguments and the
small number of familiar faces,
Russia, USA, Kuwait and
Indonesia being a few, make
the debate lethargic and
mundane. The debate lacks the
zest and emotion that debate
in a specialized country should
hold . The Chair‘s have
provided the delegates with
plenty of information
injections in forms of updates
and even blatantly pointing
out the details left ou t that
were d iscussed in the
committee‘s background
guide! But of course, as
always, there was a silver
lining! The Chair‘s were sure
to comment on how they are
impressed with certain
delegates who were first time
MUN-ers and were taking an
active part in debate and
provid ing statements filled
with substance and purpose!
They also encouraged the shy
delegate of Congo, who was a
little apprehensive about
delivering her speech; but w ith
encouragement and guidance,
she delivered it through
stutters and a barely audible
voice, bu t sat down with a
smile! So if we were to sum up
the progress of CSW today, we
would say it was a two-steps-
forward-one-step-backwards
kind of approach. But
something is always better
than nothing!

Planning Commission With the delegates d ressed in ind ian
formals and evn few draped in gorgeous
sarres, the planning commission commenced
on a pleasant note. They d iscussed intensely
on the partition of Andhra Pradesh. An
éclair was given by the chair to every
delegate who spoke impressively. In the
middle of a serious motion going on a
delegate proposed for a one on one
challenge. It turned out interesting and also
cheezy. Later on it became much more
exciting with an emergency introduced on
the partition of acids in Gujarat between
hindus and muslims. Several delegates were
barred from the com mittee with great insult
and almost wripped of their identities. At
the end a motion for entertainment was
accepted by the chair and it turned over the
entire mood. A delegate was asked to woo a
girl of his choice, bu t too shy to do so the
chair had to choose one for him.The
committee expected the deligate to ask her
out or something else but he d irectly jumped
on to ‗will you marry me.‘ A sporting
deligate volunteered to dance on the Harlem
shake and was awarded ‗two eclairs‘ for that
wonderful performance. Furthermore two
young deligates wrapped on mnm‘s
breathtaking wrap and also won themselves
―two eclairs‖ each. So with a few jokes and
eclairs d istributed the committee ended and
d ispersed with a satisfying day.

SOCHUM The Social, Cultural & Humanitarian
Committee started with a lu ll in their agenda
on the extensive decline of the significance of
performing & creative arts and the Buddhist
religion in Tibet amounting to ―cultural
genocide‖.
Soon the pace d id p ick up when a crisis
broke out which consisted of protests & self
immolation on the streets of Tibet. The
delegates immediately rose to the situation
to pass a resolution to solve the issue before
it got worse. Just like the Pied Piper & his
little rats, it‘s safe to say that the delega tes
follow the same principle. Delegates of
Brazil, China & Congo teamed up, w ith
Japan & UK as their contenders. While other
delegates just p icked whichever side they
liked better, some even forgetting their
foreign. Each bloc passed their own
resolution for the situation although
obviously both were completely d ifferent in
their views. Eventually, after talk of
incomprehensive & vague resolutions both
parties decided to join forces. A little way
down the line, the delegates realized their
biggest loophole of not having a delegate for
voicing the concerns of Tibet!
Chair Tanya Satija called in the Chair of
NATO, Jai Goradia to be the guest delegate
of Tibet. No sooner d id Jai enter the
committee than he voiced Tibet‘s missing
autonomy, subtly hinting the imminent need
for support from other countries barring
―just a few‖. The delegates of this committee
seemed to be overwhelmed by Gorad ia and
didn‘t know what to say. This event shocked
them in the best way possible to start
working on a merged resolution to pass not
just w ithin the committee but also at the
level of Security Council.
-Mihika
SPECPOL In the SPECPOL committee the delegate of
India and China shared a dance filled
‗bromance‘ to the song ‗Ishq Wala Love‘.
China supported US in spite of having a low
transparency index; it supported US in the
clause that asked all the delegates to provide
militarization in the near future. There was a
heated argument between the countries
where majority of them were against
militarization (for obvious reasons), while
US and China (with the support of few
countries) were in favor of militarization.
The next thing that took place was a
moderated caucus, ―The views of the
countries about Space Militarization‖ this
indeed proved to be an interesting topic of
d iscussion and argument. The committee
had been debating over the first agenda that
was ‗Reforms of UN on peace keeping with
special emphasis on UN stand ing force‘.
After d iscussing the agenda the committee
finally made and passed their working paper
with a majority vote of 41 out of 42 votes.
The un-moderated caucus during the
formation of the working paper was
abnormally quiet and filled with low
enthusiasm. Later when the committee
proceeded towards the second agenda, the
delegates faced an emergency. The
emergency was that China illegally launched
a satellite that posed as a threat to its
surroundings. A notice had been set to clear
the issue within 28 hours.

UNDP
The UNDP i.e. United Nations
Development Programme, was chaired
by Adarsh Mathew and Nayanka Ghosh.
The 1st Agenda was about the
empowerment of women in South East
Asia. The 2nd Agenda was about
promoting democracy in the Middle
East. The 1st Agenda was voted upon by
the delegates. It was described as
repetitive and monotonous by the Chair
and the only point brought up was
education. Later, the delegate of USA
moderated a caucus on the importance of
education and he made it compulsory for
each delegate to speak. The motion
passed and the d iscussion begun. The
delegate of Iran stated that USA‘s
involvement in Iran and Afghanistan
was hampering the development in these
nations.
The delegate of USA was called and I
quote, ―cocky‖ by the Chair itself. A
specific delegate passed an interesting
comment about the delegate of USA‘s
arrogance and how ―he doesn‘t give any
delegate a chance to speak.‖
USA brought up the situation on
contraception, which was a huge
blunder. Due to sexual harassment, lack
of awareness, women have to
unnecessarily
carry pregnancy so the delegate said that
the UN should promote contraceptives
and abortion plans but the US
government does not give any fund ing to
any organization. This was against the
country‘s foreign policy.
Being the favourite, dear USA, was
barred for half an hour. USA, you seem
to be the apple of everyone‘s eye
Session 2 served as another good laugh
as most of the delegates weren‘t aware
that the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights had granted compulsive
education in 1948 and assumed the little
blue book was called the ―book of human
rights!‖
Overall the chairs were not very
impressed with today‘s sessions so
delegates of UNDP, it‘s time to level up!

United Nations FSC For day 1 of IIMUN 2013, the state of the
Futuristic Security Council, chaired by
Aryaman Jalota and Aditya Soni, was
similar to India‘s economy through the
past three years – boring, monotonous
and low but with bouts of very
productive highs! The few delegates that
stuck out like sore thumbs, Ind ia, USA,
Germany, France and UK to name a few,
were the only voices that could be heard
through the cacophony caused by the
mix of voices from the neighboring
committees and lunch hall. In fact, these
delegates were so repetitive in their
speeches; the committee on a whole was
surprised when Singapore wished to add
their name to the GSL. No one knew that
we had a delegate of Singapore! The
monotonous nature of the debate soon
had even the over-enthusiastic delegates
losing interest in the agenda. But to say
that things p icked up after the lunch
break would be the understatement of
the week
The Chairs got more into the debate,
more delegates started speaking, there
were fruitfu l and comprehensive debates
and overall it was a productive and
positive end to a lethargic start to the
day.
Bet the delegates of Australia, who asked
for a transfer of committee, regret their
decision now!

THE INTERNATIONAL PRESS 11
UNEP
UNEP in the beginning had a mild start but
eventually the comitee session took the
other route as the rain poured harder.
International Press in UNEP found a
sizzling argument between the delegates of
the same committee. The most noticable
thunder was between the delegate of USA
and the delegate of Iceland which have got
nothing to do with eachother in real life ,
practically. Also the ever confident delegate
of USA was attacked and verbally assaulted
by many includ ing the delegate of Saud i
Arabia showering innumerable questions.
The delegate of USA couldn‘t absorb the
humiliation and took her frustration out
through a few drops of tears. The delegate
however showed great courage and
enthusiastically proposed to answer them
back. But the delegate was suppressed by
the attempt of putting her down by he other
delegates who couldn‘t agree to her point.
Furthermore, the applause of the other
delegates to the speech of the delegate of
Saudi Arabia built on to the already
bursting p ile. The press found this session
more interactive than any other committee .

THE EUROPEAN
UNION As the attendance began, we finally knew
the amount of confidence installed in each
person: some too much and some too little.
The top ic of d iscussion was the economic
crisis Europe was facing.
The delegate of Ireland stuttered about the
economy of the USA. The German delegate
swayed his hands making it a little hard to
concentrate on the point he was getting
across. I finally had to stop looking at him,
and only listen. He spoke about the change
in currency and the losses faced by the
European government.
The German delegate's phone d isrupted the
attention on the top ic of d iscussion as he
struggled to turn it on silent.
The Austrian delegate talked about his
country's economy and the technicalities
behind making it better. She talked about
Austria taking not just their well being, but
that of Europe as a whole under
consideration.
The Delegate of Germany passed a motion
d iscussing the implantation of the p egging of
Europe.
The motion was passed and the delegate of
Ireland began speaking; agreeing with what
the delegate of Germany had said . Pegging
the currency low, Ireland stands to gain.
Unsure of his answer, the delegate of
Denmark mixed and matched his way
through to highlight the point he lacked
confidence in making - that pegging of the
Euro would benefit Denmark.
Czech Republic was against the argument
and said that the pegging of the Euro is
illogical, as the countries that are not a part
of the euro zone do not benefit.
The Delegate of Germany d id not seem to
understand what the delegate of Czech
Republic had said and tried to create an
absurd debate, swaying his arms and gravely
embarrassing himself in front of the union.
The dramatic approach of the delegate of UK
confused me. I couldn't make a note of what
she was bringing to the table. But since the
delegate of Romania agreed with her point, I
assume she made sense, until she tried to
correct and educate the delegate of Romania.
The delegate of Luxembourg stood up and
showed some confidence (finally) as she
brought a strong valid point across. She was
supported by the delegates of Belgium and
France, hence by this point, the economic
crisis should have been solved by the
pegging of the euro, so said the delegates of
numerous countries.
I think this just needs to be mentioned here,
during committee delegate of Germany
blows his nose on his placard and what a
sight it was.
These words seem less to describe how one
feels in these sessions when has one not
attended the sessions before. Overall, it was
painfu lly slow, and confusing. To write an
intellectual article on this session one must
be well equipped with the current affairs of
all European states. If it turns out to be an
alien topic, it gets very d ifficu lt to
comprehend and stay updated . It was
interesting to know about the economic
challenges faced by the countries
participating. I was p leasantly surprised
with the level of debate in this committee
and hope it continues.
