1. Overview

1.1. Creative Industry Green criteria

Creative Industry Green provides organisations with an annual environmental impact report, which assesses an organisation across four criteria: Commitment, Communication, Understanding, and Improvement. Organisations are awarded an IG certification of 1-3 stars reflecting their performance across all four of the listed criteria. The Creative Industry Green overall rating requires consistent rating across all four criteria i.e. to be awarded 2 stars, an organisation must have been awarded 2 stars in all four criteria. Find out who else is Creative Industry Green certified. Commitment

• Having an environmental/sustainability policy • Assigning roles and responsibilities • Stakeholder engagement

Communication

• Communicating environmental initiatives and performance with stakeholders • Communicating Creative Industry Green results with stakeholders (where applicable)

Understanding

• Understanding the organisation’s environmental and carbon impacts • Prioritising main environmental impacts

Improvement

• Managing the organisation’s main environmental impacts • Achieving reductions • Having an environmental action plan

In order to achieve 2* and 3* ratings, requirements relating to 1* and 2* must also have been satisfied.

1.2. Organisational overview

Lyric Hammersmith is a medium sized theatre, with a seating capacity of 631. In the 2013-14 financial year, it sold 61,827 tickets, and put on 374 performances across 2 performance spaces. The theatre is currently part way through an ambitious capital project that will add drama, dance, film and TV recording studios, a 60-seat cinema, and a new bar and café. It is due to open in spring 2015. This project has impacted on the operational floor area of the building, which was 3,823.5m2 but reduced to 1,958.74 m2 in January 2014, and then to 781m2 in February 2014. During the 2013-14 financial year, Lyric Hammersmith theatre opened for an average of 76 hours per week, and 311 days of the year. The on-site café had a capacity of 200 until February 2014 when it was reduced to 50. The theatre employs an average of 44 full-time equivalent staff.

2. The criteria

2.1. Commitment

Commitment refers to having a formalised organisational commitment to environmental sustainability i.e. having an environmental sustainability policy in place and agreed environmental roles and responsibilities. Commitment also refers to leading by example and sharing best practice by engaging with stakeholder groups.

Creative Industry Green Commitment rating

To achieve 3 stars in Commitment, organisations must satisfy the following criteria: Demonstrate best practice by embedding environmental sustainability in: • Key roles and responsibilities across the organisation and/or • Within your core business mission, strategy and planning

And engage and actively involve at least three stakeholder groups (from the following list) in taking environmental action: Staff & crew, Supply chain organisations, Incoming artists, Incoming events, Community, Audience, Other

Assessment Lyric Hammersmith are embedding environmental sustainability into every part of the business. It has an Environmental Policy that has recently been updated and shared amongst staff. Staff and board members are engaged through meetings, sharing reports, and regular reminders regarding behaviour and actions that will support the lowering of environmental impact. Supply chain organisations are chosen based in part on their locality to the theatre and on their environmental credentials; and where possible, lower impact goods are purchased, such as recycled paper and notebooks. Incoming touring companies are asked to agree to a contractual commitment to environmental sustainability. The audience is engaged through the website and through on-site recycling facilities. As such, Lyric Hammersmith is awarded 3 stars for Commitment. Responsibility Overall responsibility for environmental performance at Lyric Hammersmith lies with Kim Grant, Director of Finance, Administration and Operations, and Green Champion. She is supported in this work by Katie Shahatit, Finance Officer, and by other members of the Green Team from across the business. Lyric Hammersmith has embedded environmental sustainability into its core business mission, strategy and planning. This includes working at all levels of the business to consider environmental impacts, as evidenced by designing the new extension in order to achieve the BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’. Environmental Policy Lyric Hammersmith has recently updated its Environmental Policy. It sets out the aims as follows:

• To continue to reduce carbon emissions by 10% year on year until the LED replacement programme is complete (with the exception of 2015-16, when baseline emissions are expected to rise on completion of the capital project, which will increase the size of the building by 64%);

• Maintain the 3* Industry Green rating and work in partnership with Julie’s Bicycle to adapt the criteria to reflect progress;

• Go paperless in finance and administration; • Achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ for the building following completion of the Capital Project; • Plant a green sedum roof, which will increase bio-diversity, improving a site which currently has limited value

to wildlife, contribute to pollution control in a busy urban area, help reduce surface water run off and

Page 6: IG 3 Stars Lyric report 2013

contribute to the London Plan’s aim to increase green cover in central London by 5% by 2030 and by 10% by 2050;

• Complete the LED lighting in the main auditorium and invest in Solar PV panels on the main theatre roof, working in partnership with the Mayor’s Office GLA RE:FIT Programme;

• Investigate changing show related lighting to LED wherever possible; • Ensure that the new Lyric catering and bars operation is as green as possible.

The Policy also sets out the means of achieving these aims, including the central role of the Green Team (see below). Board and Staff The board are engaged in supporting the environmental sustainability initiatives, and they are kept informed with progress and successes. The Green Team has representatives from across the business. The team meet monthly to report on measurements and progress, set targets on the Green Action Plan, assign responsibilities, and to discuss future projects and initiatives. Employees receive regular updates on progress from the Green Team in the form of emails. These aim to engage employees in a range of issues and behaviours, including turning off computers/monitors at night, using the stairs not the lift, switching off lights, and implementing energy-saving behaviours at home etc. Some of these topics have also been covered in posters and aim to engage staff in lowering environmental impact through their behaviours (Images 1 and 2). Each new employee at Lyric Hammersmith receive a Green Induction so that they are aware of the activities and behaviours related to environmental sustainability that are undertaken and expected at Lyric Hammersmith. All employees are issued with the Green Policy.

Audience and Other Building Users Engagement and Initiatives Lyric Hammersmith engages with other building users by including a contractual commitment to environmental sustainability in all tour and visiting company contracts. The audience is encouraged to travel to the theatre by public transport, and this is the only travel information that is provided on the website. Once at Lyric Hammersmith, audience members and other building users have access to a roof garden, and are engaged in recycling their waste through recycling bins, which are marked “we recycle everything”. At one show during 2013-14, the audience was engaged in an innovative way to think about growing their own food/plants by children in the audience being provided with seeds to grow beans. Supply Chain Organisations Lyric Hammersmith is making environmental sustainability a core part of decisions regarding suppliers and purchases; many suppliers are local to the theatre, suppliers are also chosen based to their green credentials, and the good purchased are chosen for their reduced environmental impact. For example, recycled paper and notebooks are purchased from a company with strong credentials; unwanted stationary/furniture were recycled; a green paper shredding company turn confidential waste into recycled paper; and the waste contractor was chosen for their excellent recycling rates.

Sharing Best Practice and Collaborations Lyric Hammersmith is a key member of the London Theatre Consortium sustainability group, and has also hosted other theatre members interested in its approach to sustainability. The theatre is also working with the Mayor’s Office in regards to their GLA REFIT Programme, and works with the Borough’s Carbon Reduction Manager to disseminate good practice. The theatre has joined the Arts Basket, a consortium of arts venues who are purchasing energy together. Recommendations To maintain 3 stars for Commitment, Lyric Hammersmith will need to continue demonstrating best practice by embedding environmental sustainability in key roles and responsibilities across the organisation and/or within the core business mission, strategy and planning, The theatre must continue to engage and actively involve at least three stakeholder groups (from the following list) in taking environmental action: employees, supply chain organisations, incoming artists, incoming events, community, audience, and the general public. Julie’s Bicycle would further recommend that Lyric Hammersmith:

• Ensures that its Environmental Policy is signed and dated, and is shared on the website for interested parties to see and download;

• Routinely shares its Environmental Policy with supplier organisations and insist on seeing their Environmental Policy;

• Ensures that all employees job descriptions include compliance with all environmental initiatives and activities; • Set up an easy way for staff to provide ideas to the Green Team for new initiatives in their part of the

business.

2.2. Communication

Communication refers to how well an organisation communicates its environmental initiatives and Creative Industry Green results with its stakeholders.

Creative Industry Green Communication rating

To achieve 3 stars in Understanding, organisations must satisfy the following criteria: Demonstrate best practice through • Innovative and tailored stakeholder communications e.g.

visualising environmental impacts, targeted awareness-raising campaigns AND/OR • Address environmental sustainability through artistic content

And communicating environmental impacts and improvements and Industry Green certification – report, results, logo etc. with at least three stakeholder groups: Staff & crew, Supply chain organisations, Incoming artists, Incoming events, Community, Audience, Other

Assessment Lyric Hammersmith is communicating its environmental impacts and improvements and the last Industry Green results and logo with employee and board members, and communicates through the website and social media for other interested stakeholders. The communications with staff are tailored, and aim to raise awareness of staff behaviour that can contribute to lowering environmental impact at work and at home. As such Lyric Hammersmith is awarded 3 stars Industry Green for Communication. Communicating with Staff and Board Lyric Hammersmith staff and board members are regularly updated via meetings and emails on a range of environmental sustainability-related achievements and updates. Many email examples have been supplied as evidence, and include the polar bear mascot used as reminders in emails and in the building to comply with actions and behaviours that can lower environmental impact (Image 3). The communications are written to be accessible and tailored to staff.

Image 3 The Polar Bear Mascot

Communicating with Audience Members and Other Building Users Lyric Hammersmith communicates with its audience and other building users through its website, through signage and displays at the theatre itself, and also through social media. The website contains some information about the theatre’s Green activities, and blog posts regularly mention green achievements and activities. For example, Image 4 shows a blog post letting interested readers know about the energy achievements.

Communicating with Other Arts Organisations and The Press Lyric Hammersmith communicates best practice and shares its knowledge of implementing environmental sustainable initiatives and activities with other arts organisations, and with collaborative teams when appropriate. Lyric Hammersmith has communicated with the press (through press releases and interviews) regarding their environmental achievements and initiatives. Communicating the Last Industry Green Certification The Creative IG Report from 2012-13 was disseminated around employees and board members by email. The Creative IG Certificate was displayed in the building for all building users to see. And there is a download of the report on the website for any interested person to read. In celebration of achieving 3 stars Industry Green, Lyric Hammersmith held an employee ‘Green Fancy Piece’. Lyric Hammersmith are intending to implement the following communications over the coming year:

• Development of a Green sub-brand that can be launched at the time of re-opening; • Creating a Green video; • Generating a dedicated page on the website for communicating Green activities; • Locating an area of the building that can be used for a Green display of activities and aspirations.

Recommendations To maintain 3 stars Lyric Hammersmith will need to continue demonstrating best practice through innovative and tailored stakeholder communications e.g. visualising environmental impacts, targeted awareness-raising campaigns and/or address environmental sustainability through artistic content. Lyric Hammersmith will need to continue communicating environmental impacts and improvements and Industry Green certification – report, results, logo etc. with at least three stakeholder groups: employees, supply chain organisations, incoming artists, incoming events, community, audience, and the general public. Julie’s Bicycle would further recommend that Lyric Hammersmith:

• Formulate a specific communications campaign, with tailored communications going to each stakeholder group.

2.3. Understanding

Understanding refers to an organisation’s awareness of its main environmental impacts; as evidenced by monitoring and analysing qualitative and quantitative information, and using this analysis to inform environmental action setting.

Creative Industry Green Understanding rating

To achieve 3 stars in Understanding, organisations must satisfy the following criteria: Monitor and measure at least one further source of impact (beyond energy, water and waste) for at least one year: Business travel, Production travel, Audience travel, Production, Touring, Commuting, Other relevant key sources of impact such as materials use, merchandise, food/catering And demonstrate best practice by establishing more in depth understanding of one or more areas of impacts e.g. Energy end use audits, Building user audits, Regular water monitoring and measurement, Waste audits, Audience travel surveys, and using data to inform and prioritise actions.

Assessment Lyric has an advanced understanding of its environmental impacts and has provided data on energy use, water use, wastewater, waste and audience travel for five consecutive years, and business travel and touring for the previous two years. Lyric is therefore awarded 3 stars for Understanding. Lyric Hammersmith has been measuring electricity, water, wastewater, waste and business travel for five consecutive years, since 2009-10. It has also gone beyond Industry Green scope to measure touring travel (reported as part of business travel), and for 2013-14 has also undertaken an audience travel survey and has measured staff commuting although this survey has not been incorporated in the analysis of this report as the average distance was missing. Lyric Hammersmith also receives a monthly emissions report from their suppliers, and receive a monthly report from the building contractor regarding the recycling of materials. Lyric Hammersmith is therefore awarded 3 stars for Understanding. See Annex 1 for all data submitted by Lyric Hammersmith to Julie’s bicycle for Industry Green certification (Table 1). Annex 2 provides the calculated emissions for all submitted data for years relating to the Industry Green assessment i.e. the baseline year (the first year Lyric Hammersmith submitted data to Julie’s Bicycle), the current year (2013-14) and the previous year (2012-13).

In 2013-14, Lyric Hammersmith theatre activities generated 373 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent; which corresponds to 2,253.7 kg per performance. These impacts are from energy, water, wastewater, waste, audience travel and business travel, as shown in Graph 1.

Graph 1. Lyric Hammersmith theatre’s emission sources 2013-14 Context for carbon emissions In 2013-14, Lyric Hammersmith Theatre emitted 373 tonnes CO2, which are equivalent to driving a car around the world 48 times. Recommendations To maintain 3 stars, Lyric Hammersmith theatre will need to continue monitoring and measuring at least one further source of impact (beyond energy, water and waste) for at least one year: business travel, production travel, audience travel, production, touring, commuting and other relevant key sources of impact such as materials use, merchandise, food/catering. The theatre will need to continue demonstrating best practice by establishing more in depth understanding of one or more areas of impacts e.g. energy end use audits, building user audits, regular water monitoring and measurement, waste audits, audience travel surveys and using data to inform and prioritise actions. Julie’s Bicycle would further recommend that Lyric Hammersmith:

• Gather information about the average distance staff commute in order to calculate staff commuting footprint; • Measures environmental impacts for other business activities and resources use such as, paper consumption,

printer and photocopier cartridges, merchandising, and staff commuting.

2.4. Improvement

Improvement refers to the reduction of environmental impacts and improvement of environmental performance e.g. through emissions reductions, as well as the management of environmental impacts through strategic action plans. For the purposes of this report, improvements are always calculated in relative terms, i.e. per performance. Annex 2 provides the absolute emissions for reference only; it also provides the emissions per performance that are used in this section for assessing improvement overall, relative to the baseline year and the previous year.

Creative Industry Green Improvement rating

To achieve 3 stars in Improvement, organisations must satisfy the following criteria: A decrease of "6% in energy-related carbon emissions as compared to the previous year, providing the energy-related emissions are lower than the baseline year (i.e. first year of data) and, in addition, achieving at least one of the following: • A decrease in total tonnes of waste going to landfill or an increase in percentage of waste to recycling as compared to the previous year and baseline year • A decrease in total litres of water and wastewater as compared to the previous year and baseline year • Being below the Julie's Bicycle benchmark for Venues and Cultural Buildings • A decrease in any other relevant sources of impacts as applicable, compared to the previous year and baseline year (e.g. business travel, production etc.)

Assessment When comparing 2013-14 with 2012-13, Lyric Hammersmith theatre has increased its carbon emissions per performance from energy by 3.1%. When comparing 2013-14 with the baseline year, the theatre has also increased its energy carbon related emissions by 13.4%. Based on the exceptional circumstances that the theatre has been closed for the first quarter of 2014 for refurbishment and fewer performances have taken place, which has a large impact in the metric, it has been considered to focus the assessment on the absolute figures and not to consider the relative carbon emissions per performance. Table 2 shows the results in relative figures. Table 3 shows the results in absolute figures and in the case of electricity, water and landfill, the theatre has been able to reduce all of them not just when comparing 2013-14 with 2012-13 but also when comparing 2013-14 with the baseline year (2009-2010) As such Lyric Theatre is awarded 3 stars for improvement because the theatre has been able to reduce its energy consumption in comparison with last year (2012-13) and since the baseline year (2009-2010). The same circumstances applies to water, which has increased emissions per performance by 13.4% when comparing relative figures from 2013-14 with the baseline year but it stills shows a reduction of 10.4% when comparing 2013-14 with 2012-13. In absolute figures, water has decreased by 36.4% when comparing 2013-14 with 2012-13 and by 33.6% when comparing 2013-14 with the baseline year. In the case of emissions from audience travel, there has been a reduction of 18.5% when comparing 2013-14 with 2012-13 and when comparing 2013-14 with the baseline year but this may be due to the fact that 2013-14 is the first time that real figures from an audience travel survey have been used as in past reports, this figure was calculated based on default figures. Business travel has increased by 25.1% when comparing 2013-14 with 2012-13, which is mainly due to more short-haul flights in 2013-14 and by 1,063% when comparing 2013-14 with the baseline year.

Graph 5. Percentage change in proportion of waste going to landfill and recycling Improvement strategy/action plan: 2013-14

In 2013-14, Lyric Hammersmith Theatre was able to achieve the following objectives from its strategic plan: • Joining the Arts Basket, 100% renewable energy so mostly wind generated; • Ensuring the new Café has local, London, suppliers and uses organic and recyclable products; • Completion of the LED conversion programme in the studio, the creative space and the café; • Recycling the unwanted office furniture to a charity; • Continuing the ‘turn off’ campaign using polar bear images as a reminder.

Recommendations To maintain 3 stars for Improvement, Lyric Hammersmith theatre will need to achieve a decrease of "6% in energy-related carbon emissions as compared to the previous year, providing the energy-related emissions are lower than the baseline year (i.e. first year of data) and, in addition, achieving at least one of the following:

• A decrease in total tonnes of waste going to landfill or an increase in percentage of waste to recycling as compared to the previous year and baseline year;

• A decrease in total litres of water and wastewater as compared to the previous year and baseline year • Being below the Julie's Bicycle benchmark for Venues and Cultural Buildings; • A decrease in any other relevant sources of impacts as applicable, compared to the previous year and

3. Industry benchmarks

Julie's Bicycle has developed a set of benchmarks to help organisations compare their environmental performance against the industry average for venues/cultural buildings, offices and outdoor events. All benchmarks have been developed using data collected by Julie's Bicycle through Creative Industry Green certifications, Creative IG Tools accounts, and partner organisations from across the cultural sector. This collection of benchmarks is the second edition (March 2014) released by Julie's Bicycle, and builds on the first edition (April 2012), which was relevant to venues/cultural buildings and outdoor events. The benchmarks have been created using appropriate ‘relative’ metrics to make them more easily comparable to an organisation whatever its size and scale; the metric is per m2 per year for buildings. Comparing environmental performance against these benchmarks gives organisations an understanding of their indicative energy and resource efficiency, as compared to the sector average. The Creative IG Tools also includes a table, which allows organisations to compare their impacts to the Julie's Bicycle benchmarks automatically (found in the View Results tab). The benchmark median (shown by the dotted line) is the average efficiency across all venues included in the Julie’s Bicycle benchmarking calculation. There is a large variation in the size, design and age of buildings, and achieving this level of efficiency is likely to be very difficult for some venues without major capital investment.
