Over the course of its history, IEL has sought excellence in higher education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. It is recognized in Brazil and abroad as a benchmark both in teaching and in research and publications on language and literature. The Institute has developed strong relationships with universities from all Brazilian regions and from Europe and the USA. IEL has 4 graduate programs with more than 90 participating professors, all with PhD degrees. Three of these programs are ranked in the 2 highest positions of the assessment conducted regularly by the Brazilian government. In areas such as Discourse Analysis, Experimental Phonetics, Indigenous Languages, Neurolinguistics and Syntax, the IEL graduate program is now a Brazilian and international benchmark. With an interdisciplinary dynamic involving researchers from fields such as Physics, Geosciences and the Arts, the Scientific and Cultural Dissemination master’s program is administered in partnership with the Unicamp Laboratory of Advanced Studies in Journalism (Laboratório de Estudos Avançados em Jornalismo - Labjor). At the undergraduate level, IEL offers 4 programs: the Teaching degree in Portuguese Language and Bachelor degrees in Linguistics, Literary Studies and Speech Therapy. Students who pursue the Portuguese Language teaching degree can also opt for training in "Portuguese as a Second Language and Foreign Language” to act in Portuguese education (language, literature and culture) and in the promotion and management of the Portuguese language, both in Brazil and abroad. A strong component of the undergraduate program is the scientific research courses, which provide students with contact with research projects conducted at the Institute. The Speech Therapy program is offered in conjunction with the School of Medical Sciences (Faculdade de Ciências Médicas - FCM) of the university, and its curriculum provides a multidisciplinary education for the promotion, prevention and therapy of changes in oral and written language, oral motor skills, voice and hearing. In the fields of Linguistics and Literary Studies, the IEL library is one of the most complete in the country. Its collection consists of over 100,000 books and thousands of journals, theses and dissertations that can be accessed by the general public. The Institute has also 12 research centers that bring together Unicamp and external researchers from different theoretical lines around the most current and diverse research topics in the fields of Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and Literary Studies. Integrated in the Institute is the Alexandre Eulalio Cultural Documentation Center (Centro de Documentação Cultural “Alexandre Eulalio” - Cedae), which has a collection of 26 personal archives of writers, artists and intellectuals, 5 institutional archives related to the major Brazilian and Latin American linguistic associations, and 23 document collections on topics related to Brazilian literature and linguistics.
