COMMENT: Just when we thought it might be safe to go back in the water... ..........Page 4

In line with IDN and ACEMpredictions, 2014 finally sawmotorcycle sales in Europestart to increase again

following continuous decline thathas seen them fall by more than 50percent from 1.524m in 2007 tounder 740k in 2013.

Last year the market bounced by 7.9percent to see 798,328 newmotorcycles sold and registered in the21 of the 28 markets of the EuropeanUnion for which data was availablewhen Brussels based ACEM concludedtheir provisional research for Europeanmarket data at the end of January.

There will be a mid-year update, andhistoric data and current trends suggestthat a further 9,000 to 10,000 newmotorcycles will be reported as sold atthat time. This data doesn't include EFTAnations such as Norway, where 4,128motorcycles are reported as sold lastyear (up from 3,979 in 2013) and theimpressive Swiss market where saleswere up 5 percent to 39,847.Switzerland reputedly has the highestownership of motorcycles per head of

population in Europe and is the 6thlargest market in Europe overall.

While a lot of comparisons betweenNational trade association data inEurope can be inconsistent because ofvarying classification and reportingpractices, ACEM's monthly, quarterly

and annual data does give a reasonablyuniform like-for-like comparison andtrend.

The ACEM data places Italy asEurope's largest motorcycle market in2014 with 156,431 new units reportedas registered (+1.62 percent, and 19.59percent of the total EU number); withFrance second, 153,324 units (+3.66

percent, and 19.21 percent of the EUtotal); Germany third, 141,623 units(+9.27 percent, and 17.74 percent ofthe EU total); the fast recovering Spanishmarket 4th, 111,460 units (+20.27percent, and 13.96 percent of the EUtotal); with the UK 5th, 91,492 units (+ 13.02 percent, and 11.46 percent ofthe EU total) - see chart on page 6 of thisedition of International Dealer News.

These five markets between themaccount for 82 percent of motorcyclesales in the EU (a total of 654,331motorcycles).

Altogether 16 of the 20 EU marketsfor which comparable year-on-year datais available are showing increases inregistrations.

In total Powered Two Wheeler (PTW)terms the European market is basicallyflat, having dropped by just 11,645units/1.49 percent from 2013 to1,099,018 units in 2014 (a 55 percentdecline from the high of 2,437,928 unitsseen in 2007) due to the still depressed'Moped' market in Europe, which sawregistrations in the EU fall by

SOMETIMES I hate being right. Last year, in the June/July 2014edition of International Dealer News, when I forecast that therewere new potential problems ahead for the EuroZoneeconomies in Europe, even I didn't anticipate just how quickly

the spectre of deflation would start to threaten all the hard work thathas gone into getting the motorcycle industry headed in the rightdirection.

Just as all of Europe's "Big Five" motorcycle markets finally report 12 monthsof new registrations growth (modest growth in some cases, but growthnonetheless) along comes an economic issue that could see the Euro currencyeconomies stalled by a similarimpasse to the one that has hauntedthe Japanese economy since theearly 1990s.

Originally referred to as Japan's"Lost Decade", in reality failure todeal convincingly with its burst assetbubble has cost the Japaneseeconomy at least twenty years ofgrowth. Indeed escaping the gravitational pull of that overheated anduncontrolled investment cycle is still driving Japanese economic policy today andis likely to continue to do so for years to come.

In Europe's case the causes, timings and circumstances have been different, but the bitter aftertaste of a moribund economy driven backwards by its inabilityto move forwards or even sideways is similar and familiar.

In a massive outbreak of "too little, to late" the EBC is now seeking to substitutelow interest rates and as a patently failed stand-alone alternate to the mechanismof quantitative easing in dealing with the 2007-2009 banking crisis by having tostart printing money after all - just at the time when the two economies thatheavily promoted doing so as a viable route to recovery (The United States andthe United Kingdom) are emerging into a position of relative economic stabilityand health.

Quite how the deflationary cycle and prospects of a 'Grexit/Grecstay' styleimpact on currency confidence will impact on specialty markets such as ours isdifficult to predict, but impact it certainly will.

All this just as the slew of positive motorcycle sales news at this time fromEurope's trade associations is mirrored by the fiscals emerging from the motorcyclemanufacturers themselves.

As more and more motorcycle brand market-share remains in, or falls whollyor partially into, the grip of auto makers or (in the case of the Indian giants inparticular) into the hands of mixed transport portfolio producers, the pressuresthat would normally emerge to squeeze access to capital should not after all bequite as serious a concern as it would usually be.

As manufacturers prepare themselves for a whole range of brave new worlds(ITS, eCall and e-mobility among them), access to capital is going to be crucial, especially once money ceases to be as cheap as it has been.

The reason why such businesses are attracted to PTW investments is becauseof the short-term potential for ROI elsewhere in their operations, and long-termpotential for a bolt-hole once the cities really are too crowded for four wheels, once hydrocarbon burning really does become economically and environmentallyunsustainable, and once the challenges that have historically challenged PTW usehave been addressed in the wider public consciousness.

Creature comforts such as automatic transmissions, connectivity, and safetysystems have reinvented our wheels, and having an "offer" that will be fit for mid21st century purpose will give us a compelling story.

The motorcycle industry has always been in a fantastic position to become awell equipped future-facing endeavour, one where enterprise and innovation arethe Siamese Twins of the progress weneed to make. Progress that will allow usto position PTWs to define how thetransport challenges of the future aremet, so we finally have control of theagenda in meeting the challenges of thefuture.

However, the recovery is still so fragile, and the balance sheet calculations thenew breed of the industry's owners and investors are making themselves so finelybalanced that if the continuing improvement in consumer confidence so much asskips a single heartbeat, then what may start out as the beat of a butterfly's wings, could hit our industry with hurricane force winds - destroying everything that hasbeen achieved so far and denying us of another decade or more of potential.

The list of motorcycle manufacturers and brands whose corporate ownershipis either wholly or in part in the hands of businesses whose primary activities orprofits are derived from transport or powersports industry solutions involving morethan two wheels is already impressive ... Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, BMW, Ducati,Peugeot Scooters, MV Agusta, KTM/Husqvarna, Indian, Victory, EBR, and RoyalEnfield - to say nothing of the involvements of the Chinese PTW sector.

With rumours continuing to circulate about possible 'Detroit' or mixed-portfolioAsian manufacturer bids for at least two of the other top twenty motorcycle brandsnot mentioned here, and Piaggio still having to work hard to exorcise its demons, the vulnerability of our manufacturing sector to impacts from outside of ouralready fragile core European markets and activities just cannot be overstated.

If consumer confidence doesn't trip us up, we have licensing, training, andsafety waiting to do so. If deflation doesn't get us, then the potential fall-out fromthe current cycle of mergers and acquisitions frenzy could - just ask long-term"traditional style" MV Agusta dealers what they think about being a part of"BenzWorld"!

According to the latest data released by themotorcycle industry trade association in Italy(ANCMA), the total PTW market in Italy finished+6.7 percent in January (9,214 units), having beennearly 8 percent down in January 2014, and over 23percent down at the same period in January 2013.In motorcycle terms, the month was +7.4 percent

at 3,806 units. For the full year 2014, the PTW market in Italy

finished at 1.4 percent (156,046 units) after monthlyfluctuations that made it uncertain right up toDecember as to whether or not the Italian marketwould emerge with growth after seeing registrationscollapse dramatically since the start of the globaleconomic downturn. Having shown a decline of -16.1 percent (5,723

units) in November 2014, the Italian market trendrecovered to be up 8.8 percent in December (4,294units). As reported by Ducati, 2014 was a disappointing

year for the Italian brand in its home market, despiteposting record sales worldwide - not a single Ducatimodel made it into the Top 20 sellers in Italy last year. Indeed, 16 of the top 20 sellers were scooter

models, with Honda's SH 150, 300 and 125 in first, second and third place respectively (with 8,457,6,498 and 5,632 units).BMW's R 1200 GS was the seventh best selling

model in Italy last year (3,521 units) with the HondaNC 700/750 X tenth (2,590 units); BMW's R 1200GS Adventure 19th (1,852 units): Yamaha's MT-0720th (1,776 units).Motorcycles did better than small cc machines in

market, which was +3.7 percent at 38,510 units; thesub-125cc market was second largest at 37,388units (+1.3 percent). In terms of motorcycle styles, the biggest winner

was the naked bike sector at +16.6 percent (18,008units) and the Enduro bike market at +7.3 percent(18,786 units). The Custom market was level at5,868 units for the year, but the big losers were theSportbike sector at -24 percent (3,388 units) and theSupermotard market at -22 percent (2,591 units).

The latest data released by the Britishmotorcycle industry trade association (theMCIA) shows the UK motorcycle market up by+14.7 percent in January 2015 (4,465 units),with total PTW new registrations up by +11.3percent (5,128 units). The UK motorcycle market was up by +11.7percent for 2014 at 90,6734 units (comparedto 81,180 units in 2013). This was the fifthyear that motorcycle sales were up in the UKsince the 94,929 units sold in 2009.In total PTW terms, the UK was +10.2 percentin 2014 at 101,277 units - also its best yearsince 2009 (111,510 units). The fastest growing sectors in the UK in 2014were the 651-1000cc market, at +18.3percent, and the 1,000cc+ market at +13.7percent. Speaking about the year ahead, UKmotorcycle industry association ManagingDirector Steve Kenwood said: “We estimatethat around 110,000 units will be sold in theUK during 2015, which is a similar growthrate to the one we enjoyed in 2014, some+10%.

“We see the long-term trend formotorcycle use in the UK risingsteadily. The latest update to figuresfrom the Government here in the UKshows that the number ofmotorcycles, scooters and mopedson the road [the total 'bike park' inthe UK] is at its highest for five years(1.2m PTWs), with twice as many onthe road as there were in 1994".However, not all the trend data forthe UK is positive yet. The latestavailable data for the total distancetravelled by motorcycles in the UK(2012) shows it at 4.6 billion kmcompared to 5.1 billion km in 2009,and the number of motorcycle test passes areput at 45,000 for 2012/13 compared to70,000 for 2008/09. It is hoped that the 'bikepark' and distance ridden figures will start torise once the increases in new modelregistrations start to trickle down, but theissue of new rider access is as much of aworry in the UK as it is elsewhere. In other UK market news, the MCIA's annual

"Motorcycle Live" expo at the UK's NEC(National Exhibition Centre) near Birminghamin November saw attendance up by 10percent compared to 2013.The MCIA has also announced that the showdate for 2015 will be one week later in thecalendar than usual, from 28th November to6th December. www.motorcyclelive.co.uk

Jaguar Land Rover 'Bike Sense' willdetect motorcycles and bicyclesUK based car manufacturer JaguarLand Rover is developing a range ofnew technologies that would usecolours, sounds and touch, inside thecar, to alert drivers to potential hazardsand prevent accidents involvingbicycles and motorbikes.

Sensors on the car will detect whenanother road user is approaching andidentify it as bicycle or motorbike. BikeSense will then make the driver awareof the potential hazard before thedriver sees it.

But rather than using a genericwarning icon or sound, which takestime for the driver's brain to process,Bike Sense uses lights and sounds thatthe driver will instinctively associatewith the potential danger.

To help the driver understand wherethe bike is in relation to their car, theaudio system will make it sound as if abicycle bell or motorbike horn is

coming through the speaker nearestthe bike, so the driver immediatelyunderstands the direction the cyclist iscoming from.

If a bicycle or motorbike is comingup the road behind the car, Bike Sensewill detect if it is overtaking or comingpast the vehicle on the inside, and thetop of the car seat will extend to 'tap'the driver on the left or right shoulder. The idea is that the driver will theninstinctively look over that shoulder toidentify the potential hazard.

As the cyclist or rider gets closer tothe car, a matrix of LED lights on thewindow sills, dashboard andwindscreen pillars will glow amberand then red as the bike approaches. The movement of these red and amberlights across these surfaces will alsohighlight the direction the bike istaking.

Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of

Research and Technology, Jaguar LandRover, said: "Human beings havedeveloped an instinctive awareness ofdanger over thousands of years.Certain colours like red and yellow willtrigger an immediate response, whileeveryone recognises the sound of abicycle bell.

"Bike Sense takes us beyond thecurrent technologies of hazardindicators and icons in wing mirrors, to

optimising the location of light, soundand touch to enhance this intuition. This creates warnings that allow afaster cognitive reaction as theyengage the brain's instinctiveresponses. If you see the dashboardglowing red in your peripheral vision, you will be drawn to it and understandstraight away that another road user isapproaching that part of yourvehicle".

Increased attendanceat GB Trade Expo CELEBRATING its 20th anniversary, the annual GB Motorcycle Trade Expo(January 18 - 20) saw a 20 per centincrease in visitor numbers on itsreturn to Stoneleigh Park nearCoventry, after seven years at the NEC,Birmingham.

The return to the venue was popularwith visitors and exhibitors, with finalthree day attendance confirmed at

3,794 visitors, representing 1,638companies.

Europe's largest and oldestmotorcycle industry trade/dealer-specific expo, in the past decade theevent has reflected the rise and fall ofthe market in the UK, as the recessionimpacted on new motorcycleregistrations and the parts, accessoryand apparel revenues available tomotorcycle dealers and accessorystores.

However, with the UK markethaving returned to growth strongly inthe past four years, there is nowevidence that the growth in newregistrations is now also beginning tofilter through into increased parts, accessory and apparel revenues, withworkshop revenues and theconsumption of service items havingremained high throughout.

Although the period up to 2012saw a decline in the annual numbersof motorcycle journeys and total ridingdistance recorded in the UK, the nextbatch of Government data available tothe MCIA, the motorcycle industrytrade association in the UK, isexpected to show that a rebound is

underway. It is also significant thatdata also shows that the total numberof motorcycles on the road in the UKhas remained stable at around 1.2mfor several years.

Show attendances are always astrong indicator of underlying marketstrength, and with increased numbersof consumers seen at the MCIA'sBirmingham based Motorcycle Live inNovember, combined with theincrease seen at Stoneleigh in January, the British market definitely appears tobe locked into a long-term growthcycle.

THE storied history of the motorcycleindustry in Catalonia took another turnlast week - probably for the worse.

Gas Gas Motos Chairman Yariv Gilatannounced that, pending bank approvalof a debt restructuring plan, thecompany has had to suspendproduction at its factory near Girona inNorth Eastern Spain.

The company says that it has beenworking on a plan that includes newshareholder investment to support thecompany's growth, but that "the bankshave delayed their answer and forced usto start some legal actions in order toprotect the company and push theprocess forward.

"As part of this process, we had tostop production during the past days, sothere will probably be delays of new

bikes and spare parts".It has been no secret that Gas Gas

has been struggling in recent years, andGilat has been honest enough to admitthat Gas Gas has been "facing manychallenges ... the company hassubstantial financial debts fromprevious years that affected our day today operations in all aspects.

"I am confident that without havinga long-lasting solution we will continueto fail in fulfilling our business plan. Thecompany with its shareholders are

doing the best to close this restructuringagreement as soon as possible in orderto immediately resume our productionactivities".

Last year, the Catalan governmentagreed to provide Gas Gas with €2million to fund the plan, includingacquisition of new technology toimprove their two and four strokeengine production. That decisionfollowed a €4 million investment by aninternational consortium a year earlier.

Last year, it was announced that GasGas would merge with Ossa and re-launch that brand, having previouslyagreed to share production facilities andpersonnel. Ossa was re-launched in2009, three decades after its closure, and were believed to be producingaround 800 trials motorbikes. At this

time it is unclear as to whether or notOssa production has also beensuspended, but it looks very likely that ithas.

Gas Gas itself was founded in 1985,so was hoping to celebrate its 30thanniversary this year. It is estimated thatthe company was producing some9,000 bikes per year as recently as2012/13, exporting to over 50 countriesand generating some 500 direct andindirect jobs in Catalonia. www.gasgasmotos.es
