Topic 3 - Smart services and applications for a Smarter Society:

To support the deployment of interoperable infrastructures exploiting new trends on future internet and open data (namely from sensors and social networks) to create context aware services and applications of relevance for citizens in domains such as management and monitoring of large crowds at large scale events, emergency situations, mobility, etc.

Details of area activities• (Topic 1) EU and Brazilian researchers will join forces to deploy

cloud computing solutions to address scientific challenges in fields such as environment modelling, bio diversity and life sciences.

• (Topic 2) They will work together to exploit sustainable technologies solutions (including microsystems and microelectronics) for smart cities

• (Topic 3) They will deploy interoperable Internet infrastructures looking at how new trends on data (e.g. from sensors) and social networking can be applied to domains such as the management and monitoring of large crowds at large scale events, emergency situations and mobility.

• (Topic 4) Europe and Brazil will work together towards the development of a new generation of hybrid broadcast-broadband TV applications and services, which take advantage of widespread internet connectivity, both for commercial use and for educational or public purposes.

IBE meeting outcomeIBE will make 4 proposal one in each area:•Topic 1 (Cloud computing for science)

– ERASMUS UNIVERSITY GIVES ITS CANCER DATABASE– PUSP (Brazilian coordinator), Brunel (European coordinator), ERASMUS U , OSLO,

KARLSTAD, EUKNOW, PORTO, NOVA, ULB, MINERVA (for dissemination), PUSP will set up an email reflector for the above group.

•Topic 2 (Sustainable technologies)– At this time is only possible to identify potentially interested parties, namely: Brunel,

MINERVA (Dissemination), PUSP, ROME, UBL, NOVA, UNOCONSULTING– IBE will therefore need to monitor the situation with respect to the development of the call

text for this area.•Topic 3 (Smart Crowd Management)

– ROME (European coordinator), PUSP (Brazilian coordinator), BRUNEL (if London/Rio Olympics link to be made), EUKNOW, KARLSTAD, MINERVA,(dissemination) PORTO, UFSC, UBL, UNOCONSULTING

– Prof Martucci will discuss this idea with University of Brasilia PUSP will set up an email reflector for the above group.

•Topic 4 (Hybrid broadcasting)– The existing consortium appears well established and PUSP will continue developing this

proposal on its current basis. IBE participants include Brunel and Santa Catarina.

IBE meeting outcome - other• The group also Erasmus Mundus (EU) discussed the programs Science

Without Borders (BRA), and Marie Curie (EU).• Erasmus Mundus:

– It was agreed at the meeting that Erasmus Mundus was not a vehicle to be pursued by IBE.

• Marie Curie: – It was also agreed that Marie Curie was not a vehicle that IBE should directly engage with.

• Science Without Borders:– Prof. Martucci explained that the main Brazilian Universities had received extensive funding

for fellowships for the SWB program and were charged of the selection of the fellows.– There is still some lack of clarity about the operation of the SWB programme but it is only in

its early days so IBE will monitor its development and keep its participants updated on any significant developments.

– Professor Martucci emphasized that Brazil is open to working with European partners and suggested all the partners who are interested be aware of the regulations of doctoral programs of the Brazilian universities.
