March 2007N6
Icopal Roof Safety Systems Compliance with all current roof safety regulations plus guaranteed roof waterproofing, all from a single source.
Modern Health & Safety legislation refers to ‘dutyholders’ – those responsible for ensuring
adequate fall protection. Dutyholders can include designers, architects, H&S managers,
facilities managers, planning supervisors, contractors, sub-contractors and building owners.
Any of these could be individually liable in the event of an accident.
Icopal offers you a complete service from initial system selection through specification and
drawings to installation and future inspection and certification by registered contractors. It’s
your assurance of real peace of mind in an increasingly onerous regulatory area.
Guaranteed roof waterproofing
Icopal’s approach to providing a guaranteed
waterproofing solution is to include specially
designed components to ensure absolute
waterproofing integrity and compatibility. This
reduces the need for on-site fabrication of
vulnerable details which may become a weak
point in the installation. You can be confident
with an Icopal specification that both your
investment and personnel are protected.
Quality in partnership with Latchways
Icopal has developed its roof safety systems
range in partnership with Latchways plc, the
market leader in the design and manufacture
of cable-based fall protection systems.
Latchways is acknowledged as the first
company to successfully develop and market
engineered cable based fall protection systems.
The Latchways design team and registered
installers have a total understanding of how to
control loads during a fall to protect both the
worker and the roof structure. Independent
testing verifies the systems’ ability to meet
and exceed all current legislation.

Choosing the right Roof Safety system
All roofs require safe access for general
maintenance, plant servicing or renewal, or
general inspection and therefore it is important
to consider safe access to the roof. There are
several key design considerations to help you
decide which safety system is best suited to
minimise anticipated risk:
■ The competancy of workers using
the system.
■ The number of workers likely to use
the system at any time.
■ The amount of time workers will spend
connected to the system.
■ The frequency of use of the system.
■ Those parts of the roof which need to
be accessed e.g. gutters, plant and
equipment etc.
■ What parts of the roof should be
avoided e.g. rooflights, roof edges.
■ Where are the roof exit and entry
points.
■ Does the roof have a slope.
■ What signage is required.
Efficiency as well as safety
All Icopal systems allow continuous hands-free
movement enabling the operative to be
attached at all time.
Safety for any roof
A range of system anchors are available to suit
virtually all building structures and fabrics,
whilst remaining unobtrusive to protect building
aesthetics.
Icopal gives you total support in Roof Safety
■ Risk Assessment
We can assess a new or existing property
and provide recommendations to ensure
compliance through to certification.
■ Design
Our team can provide a complete roof
safety design service free of charge.
Engineered fall protection systems are

■ Annual Inspection and Certification
European legislation requires fall protection
equipment to be inspected and certified
annually by persons trained by the
manufacturer. Continuous annual inspection
and certification is also necessary in order to
maintain any guarantee offered on the
system. There is a charge for this service.

Best practice
In most cases, unless specialist rope access is
required it’s best to assume that workers have
minimal experience in the use of fall protection
systems. The Icopal Technical Team will be
pleased to give you specific guidance on
system design – on page 5 you’ll find a broad
guide to the options available.
Icopal Roof Safety Systems How the Law is tightening up roof safety
Construction (Design & Management)Regulations – CDM
‘It is the responsibility of the employer to
ensure that any employee required to work at
height must be suitably protected from any
potential fall hazards. In the event of a fall the
equipment used must be of sufficient strength
to arrest a worker’s fall.’ HSE research shows
that as many as one third of building designers
are still unclear about their responsibilities
under CDM.
‘Falls from height remain the biggest cause ofworkplace death and one of the causes of major injury’Work at Height Regulations 2005
BS EN 795
Personal protective equipment against falls
from a height. Anchor devices requirements
and testing.
All elements of the Icopal Constant Force®* fall
protection systems comply with the relevant
standards and have the appropriate CE marking.
European Standard BS EN 13374
Temporary edge protection systems.
This standard applies to temporary edge
protection for flat and inclined surfaces.
This defines three classes of protection:
■ Class A – flat surfaces.
■ Class B – shallow inclines.
■ Class C – steeply sloping roofs.
BS 8437: 2005
A code of practice for selection, use and
maintenance of fall protection systems and
equipment for use in the workplace.
Work at Height Regulations 2005
There is a duty placed on employers, the self
employed and anyone who controls the work
of others at height to provide a safe method
of work.
A place is ‘at height’ if a person could be
injured falling from it, even if it is at or below
ground level.
The Hierarchy for workers is:
■ Avoid work at height where they can.
■ Use equipment or other measures to
prevent falls where they cannot avoid
working at height.
■ Where they cannot eliminate the risk
of a fall, use work equipment or other
measures to minimise the distance
and consequences of a fall should
one occur.

All Constant Force post
systems must be installed
strictly in accordance with
Latchways technical data
sheets – available on request.

Below is a broad guide to the options available.
Fall Restraint
This system is located so that a worker on a
fixed-length lanyard cannot reach any fall
hazard. Worker training to control risk is basic.
Icopal Roof Safety Systems A system for every need
Fall Arrest – Fixed Length Lanyard
Here the system location allows access to
areas where the worker is at risk from a fall.
However, the lanyard is not adjustable. Worker
training to control risk is intermediate.
Fall Arrest – Adjustable Lanyard
A typical roof with fall hazards that can be
reached by the worker on a variable length
lanyard. Lanyard adjustment is required and the
worker training required to control risk is
advanced.
Guard Rail
Freestanding edge system to provide collective
protection for workers. There is no training
requirement.

KwikLine Fall Protection Systems
Incorporating Latchways unique Constant Force® Technology
The performance of fall protection systems are based on effective load control. A system must be
able to withstand the force of a person(s) fall and absorb the energy generated.
Traditional issues
Previously it was necessary to attach the
system anchors back to the building structure.
As such, any resulting load would be
dissipated through the structure. The system
location was also restricted as this was
determined by the position of the structural
elements.
System installation was time consuming,
requiring a number of site visits to complete
the overall solution.
These installations also created issues with
warranties, the overall roof integrity and cold
bridging.
Benefits of The Icopal Constant Force Post
■ During a fall the worker is protected by
the post absorbing the load.
■ Waterproofing integrity and guarantee
is protected.
■ The fall load imposed on the roof at
any one post is limited to a maximum
of 10kN.
■ The system is fixed from above and
therefore quick to install by registered
installers.
■ No need to fix to structural steel or
purlins.
■ Posts can be installed on most types of
roof deck which are structurally sound*
■ Suitable for use on sloping roofs up
to 15º.
■ Minimises cold bridging.
■ Marine grade stainless steel used for
key components.
■ The system is tested, certified and
tagged prior to use.
■ Aesthetically pleasing and flexible
design.
■ CE marked, complies with BS EN 795.
■ Only system guaranteed for use within
an Icopal roofing system.
■ Systems designed and tested for up to
3 users at any one time.
* Existing Roof DecksInstallation and design of KwikLine systems for existing roofsare subject to site examinations and testing for resistance topost fixing pull out, by Icopal Technical Services.
The Icopal solution
The Constant Force posts at the heart of the
Icopal system are fixed to the roof deck
giving more freedom for system location
specific to the hazards. In the event of
deployment, the load is absorbed by the
entire system through a pre-tensioned
stainless steel coil inside each post, there
by reducing the impact load to both the
person and the roof structure.
The Constant Force post is omni-
directional further protecting the worker
irrespective of the fall direction.
7
Guaranteed roof waterproofing for the Icopal Constant Force Post
Icopal Roof Safety Systems include unique waterproofing design features that protect the integrity
of the roof assembly under and around the posts where fixings penetrate the roof system.
When the safety system is installed by a registered installer, as part of a complete Icopal roofing
system, the integrity of the waterproofing is covered by an Icopal insurance-backed guarantee –
available up to 20 years.
This is an additional benefit for building owners and removes any potential guarantee issues which
could arise if the roof waterproofing and safety systems are installed by different contractors or at
different times.
WEATHERPROOF CAP
Works in conjunction with the ‘O’
ring seal to prevent water ingress
through rain and snow, and
