4. INTERVIEW ( LAr, FAIROUZ CHE ANI) - Q&A Session

Before we start the design, we landscape architect have to do

some research first on the design. There is a few guide lines,

restriction like CPTED which Is Crime Prevention through Envi-

ronmental Design. And we also have to fulfil the client and the

Dato Bandar wish lists.

Q: So you guys supposed to think of something like for ex-

ample the lighting in the township?

A: Yes, more lighting is necessary but what about the costing? So we

have to think out of the box to solve this problem. We have to think of

what kind of lighting is suitable for this situation. The distant of the light

and what happen after and before the lighting, where should we put the

fencing, housing area, parks and many more. A lots of research has

been done by the oversea architect especially form Australia. We Ma-

laysian L.A. have

to talk with them

and get some

reference form

A: There is one project we are doing now is the Elmina township

in Selangor. Township means the whole new development in a

certain undeveloped area. So we have to start from scratch as

the whole place is a palm tree estate. Then the planner come in

and we discuss with the planner about how the road should go,

where is the location of the parks and the other facilities. After

that we start to design the main road, all the infrastructure, all

the parks

and pocket

parks and

the connec-

tion flow in

the township.

Q: What is your role and responsibility in this project?

A: Our role and responsibility is to make sure that we provide the

right convenient to the user. We don’t simply build something

which is practical. Our strategy is to build something which is practical, usable and convenient, safety precaution and also easy

to use for the user.

Then we continue to assist the client in prequalifying contrac-

tors for work designed by the consultant, issue Bid documents,

review substitutions and alternatives are requested by the bid-

ders and we LA has to attend meetings with the low bidders on

items designed by consultant to review bids and understanding

of the project scope. After that, we will have to make periodic

visits to the site to become familiar with the progress and quali-

ty of construction and to determine if the construction of the

landscape work is proceeding in accordance with the design in-

tent and contract documents. And our Final task is to provide a

program for professional landscape maintenance.

Q: Can you explain to us the one of the specific

project which were still working on?

Page 5: Ici

Q: So every time after the plans is done you guys have to

meet the client to get his approval?

A: Yes we have to. This is to make sure that we are up to the cli-

ent Requirement as some of them will change their mind and al-

so to fulfil their wish list. The relationship with the client is very

important. And after the client had approved the schematic de-

sign and probable site construction cost, we then proceed the

design development drawings. In the drawing, there will be the

site grading and drainage for all side of the building footprint in-

cluding contouring,

retaining struc-

tures, swales, flow

lines and drainage

devices. Beside we

This conceptual design plan also include illustrative sections

and elevations for presentation purposes. We also have to pre-

pare the image character boards or bound booklets in order to

generate discussion and to convey the landscape design intent.

Soon after everything is done, we have to attend a meeting

with the client and other consultant to review the work.

Q: That sound like a lot of work.

A: Yes, it is. That’s why we have to start as early as possible. After

the client had approve on the site plan based on the footprint provid-

ed by us. We then produce the Schematic Landscape Design plans. In

this plan we have to think of the conceptual site grading and drainage

system in the site, the pedestrian and automobile paved area, the

identification of tree, shrub, groundcover and many more and also

the concept landscape lighting for all major landscape area. Soon af-

ter the plans is done, the project manager and project designer will

attend the project meetings with the clients.

INTERVIEW

LAr. FAIROUZ CHE ANI

Q: Is there any stages of drawing you LA going to pro-

duce like for example the tender drawing, Concept

drawing, final drawing and so on?

A: Not really. But yes, we have stages of tasks that we have to

do. For example we have to produce the conceptual design,

schematic landscape design, design development, construc-

tion doc, bidding and negotiation, construction observation

and our final task is to produce the landscape guidelines.

Q: Would you mind to explain to us in more details about

the six task you told us just now if that doesn’t bother

you?

A: The first task we have to prepare a conceptual design

plan for the client and other consultants. Before we start

the conceptual design plan, we have to review all the perti-nent codes, current entitlements, and conditions of approv-

al which may give impact to the site development concepts.
