The network of ministers and ministers that you have gathered at ICCUSA is a key part of the resourcefulness, vision and impetus of the local Nigerian community at St Francis. The Church of San Jose and the Parish of St Francis congratulate you on your work and I support your effort. Congratulations!. By your presence, you have given glory to God. 13Igbo Catholic Community USA - 2014 Convention

The idea of the formation of Nigerian Catholic Community in the United States of America came as a result of the creation of the African/Caribbean Apostolate in the Office for the Pastoral Care of Migrant and Refugees (PCMR) under the auspices of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in Washington D.C. in 1996.

The initial idea was proposed by Fr. Aniedi Okure, O.P. who was appointed as the first Coordinator for the African/Caribbean Apostolate with Dr. Paul Amuchie appointed as the National Consultant for the Nigerian Apostolate. Both were charged with organizing and seeking out African Catholics in the USA. This initial effort did not yield much fruit, because there were very few organized African Catholic Communities during this period. However, this initial effort set the stage for future development. After the tenure of Fr. Aniedi, Sr. Mary Paul Asoegwu, DDL was appointed as the next Coordinator. Working with the National Consultant, Paul Amuchie, she started an aggressive campaign to reach out to African Catholics in the USA in general and the Nigerian Catholics in particular. She saw the need to organize Nigerian Catholics on the same model of other ethnic communities in

the USCCB such as the Filipino, Vietnamese, Chinese, etc. so that their voices can be heard in matters concerning their faith in the church. The opportunity in this endeavor presented itself with the Ten Year Anniversary Celebration of the Igbo Catholic Community in the Los Angeles Archdiocese which had also invited Francis Cardinal Arinze, the then Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worships and Discipline of Sacraments in the Vatican as their Chief Celebrant in July 2003.

Both Sr. Mary Paul and Dr. Amuchie started diligently to use Cardinal Arinze’s visit to Los Angeles as a forum to invite all various or-ganized Nigerian Catholic groups to meet in Los Angeles. There were strong outreach efforts to invite as many groups as possible including the clergy and the religious. In or-der to ensure the success of this meeting and in order to encourage good attendance, Sr. Mary Paul , through her office , sponsored all the delegates who committed to attend by paying for their air fares and hotel ac-commodation. Each invited group was re-quested to send two official delegates. The meeting lasted from July 18 to July 20, 2003.

The first meeting of the delegates was held on Friday, July 18, 2003 at the residence of Mr. Anthony and Mrs. Imma Ikebudu in the city of Carson, California, County of Los An-geles. Mr. Ikebudu at that time was and still is the President of the Igbo Catholic Community of Los Angeles. The following chapters were represent-ed: Igbo Catholic Community, Bal-timore, MD; Igbo Catholic Commu-nity, Houston, TX; Igbo Catholic Community, Los Angeles, CA; Igbo Catholic Community, Queens, NY; Nigerian Igbo Catholic Com-munity, San Bernardino, CA; Nigeria Catholic Community, Washington, D.C.

The delegates showed a lot of enthusiasm and interest during the meeting. Sr. Mary Paul and Amuchie moderated the meeting. The delegates were requested to give an over-view of their different chapters in the areas of structure, policy, demographics, person-nel, activities and language. Mr. Malachy Okoro ( NY) and Mr. Victor Ume-ukeje (San Francisco) volunteered to serve as recorders. The next day’s meeting on Saturday July 19, 2003 was held at St. Cecilia Catho-lic Church – center of worship for the Igbo Catholic Community, Los Angeles. The second day meeting dwelt mainly on the formation, membership and structure of the proposed organiza-tion. After several debates on these areas, there was a consensus among the par-ticipants that the need to form a national Catholic or-ganization was imperative. Most contentious argument was on the name of the or-ganization. Majority of the attendants voted to name the organization “Igbo Catholic Communities, USA” (ICCUSA) with the understanding to form a Nigerian National Catholic Organization when the other Nigeri-an ethnic communities in the diaspora form their own communities. There was, however, an objection to this decision by the Nigerian Catholic Community, Washington, D.C. dele-gates. At the end of the second day meeting, a Steering Committee consisting of Anthony Ikebudu (L.A.), Chief Goddy Ogor (Houston), Malachy Okoro (N.Y.), Fred Olawoye (Wash-ington, D.C.), Rev. Fr. Clifford Aniefuna (Wash-ington, D.C.), Sonny Offorjebe (San Francis-co), and Aloy Ibe (Baltimore) was appointed with Dr. Amuchie and Sr. Mary Paul as consult-ants. The committee was charged with work-ing on the structure and guidelines for the for-mation of the organization. It could be said here that the first ICCUSA Convention was held in Los Angeles. Houston delegates vol-unteered to host the next convention of 2004.

The meeting on the third day of Sunday, July 20, 2003 was with His Eminence, Francis Cardinal Arinze at the headquarters of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He addressed the delegates and expressed his delight about the decision to form a national organi-zation and stressed the importance of includ-ing our language and culture in our liturgy. It is important to note here that the name of the organization changed from Igbo Catholic Communities, USA to Igbo Catholic Community, USA at the 2008 Annu-al Convention in Baltimore, MD. There is no formalized method of selecting convention

venues. Chapters volun-teer through their dele-gates to host conventions. Prior to the election of the National Executive Council (NEC) at the 2007 Conven-tion in Houston there were no elected officers for the organization. Convention hosting chapters were re-quired to provide conven-tion chairperson, secretary

and publicity secretary for each convention. Annual conventions have been held by the following chapters in the following years: Hou-ston (2004, 2007), Washington, D.C. (2005), San Francisco/San Jose (2006), Baltimore, MD (2008) and Philadelphia (2009). With the ex-ception of the Philadelphia convention, these conventions have been coordinated and supported financially by the PCMR with under the able leadership of Sr.Mary Francis Aman-fo, DDL (2005) and the current Ethnic Program Coordinator, Sr. Joanna Okereke, HHJC (2006 – present) who has contributed so much to the growth and development of ICCUSA. PCMR is now restructured as a Sub –commit-tee on Pastoral Care of Migrants, Refugees and Travelers (PCMRT) within the Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church (ACDC). ICCUSA currently has fourteen mem-bership chapters namely: Atlanta, GA, Balti-more, MD, Houston, TX, Kansas City, Kansas

Secretary), Nick Muoneke (Treasurer), Prince Onyebuchi (Financial Secretary), Clement Anyadike (Publicity Secretary) and Rev. Fr. Joe Okoye (National Chaplain). ICCUSA headquarters is currently in Houston and is registered as a Texas non-profit organization.

ICCUSA Presidents and their Legacy: 1st President - 2007-2009 SIR. ANTHONY IKEBUDU, KSJ.

The early foundation and the founding father of ICCUSA is Sir Anthony Ikebudu. Under his leadership, the first ICCUSA delegate meeting was held in his house in Los Angeles, the drafting and adoption of ICCUSA constitution, establishing ICCUSA website, and successful coordination with founding member chapters in hosting 7 ICCUSA conventions. Mr. Ikebudu is a true Igbo advocate as he continued to push that Sunday readings are translated into Igbo language and available at the ICCUSA website. The following officers served in his administration: Mr. Sunny Offorjebe (Vice President), Dr. Paul Amuchie, KSJ (Secretary),

Dr. Frank Okechukwu, K of C (Asst. Secretary), Prof. Nick Muoneke (Treasurer), Mr. Prince Onyebuchi (Financial Secretary), Mr. Clement Anyadike (Publicity Secretary). With a successful election in the 2009 convention in Philadelphia, Mr. Ikebudu handed the leadership of ICCUSA to his successor Dr. Jude Iheoma.

2nd President –2009-2011 Dr. Jude Iheoma, K of C.

Dr. Iheoma was elected on a fourth ballot at the ICCUSA convention hosted by the Philadelphia chapter in 2009. One major function of the President is to appoint his executive and set ICCUSA agenda for the next two years. The following appointments were made: Mr. James Ogbonna of Sacramento served as Vice President, Dr./Mrs. Obioma Aguocha of Philadelphia (Secretary), Dr. Emeka Okpala of Atlanta (Assistant Secretary), Dr. Nick Muoneke of Houston (Treasurer), Dr. Frank Okechukwu of Baltimore (Financial Secretary), Mr. Alex Iwumune of Baltimore (Publicity Secretary) and Rev. Msgr. Anselm Nworgu, Ph.D. of Newark New Jersey, served as our Spiritual Director. Building on a strong foundation by his predecessor, Dr. Iheoma and his executive team felt that in other to create a good road map for ICCUSA, critical and analytic thinking was vital in examining how ICCUSA has functioned in the past seven years, and to have the courage and wisdom to make changes that will strengthen the organization.

The Executive reviewed ICCUSA history and the constitution, the convention format, history of member chapters, especially the Washington DC chapter that was banned by the Arch Diocese from concelebrating Mass in Igbo language on the advise of John Cardinal Onaiyekan of Abuja, Nigeria. Based on their review, the following agenda were set for deliberation by the delegates.

Page 16: Iccusa booklet 128 pages final v2

16 Igbo Catholic Community USA - 2014 Convention

1) ICCUSA Convention: There was need to move from Chapter hosting of the convention to a National model and change the format

2) ICCUSA is registered as a not-for-profit organization in Texas without the IRS 501© status and the need to create ICCUSA Board of Trustee (Member make up/constitutional issue)

3) National chaplaincy standard for ICCUSA: (a) Address Washington DC issues and help with standardized format for the formation of new chapters (b) Strengthen ICCUSA Relationship with the United States Conference Of Catholic Bishops. (c) ICCUSA Relationship with Igbo Bishops

4) The role of Women and Youth in ICCUSA governance

5) Need to amend and strengthen the constitution

6) ICCUSA Regional Coordination and Activities.

The 2010 ICCUSA Convention in Sacramento witnessed a change in format, we had a theme for the convention and invited speakers based on the theme of the convention. The theme for that years’ convention was “ Igbo Culture and Catholic faith as the core value of the Igbo family”. The Most Rev. Dr. Callistus Onaga, the Bishop of Enugu was our Keynote speaker. Prof. Msgr. Obiora Ike, the Director of the Catholic Institute for Development Justice and Peace, spoke on “The challenges of living the faith at a time of crisis and value

disorientation with a focus youth and young adults” while our Spiritual Director, Msgr. Dr. Anselm Nwaorgu addressed the “Impact of Immigration on the Igbo Family. hese changes were welcomed with enthusiasm by the delegates and attendees. We also addressed the chaplaincy standards by inviting Rev. Dr. Ifemuonso Izuchi, Csp, who presented a draft of the Chaplaincy standard to the delegates for approval.

Armed with the success of the 2010 convention, the leadership set out to focus on the youths and young adults at the 2011 convention in Newark New Jersey. The theme of the convention: “ First generation Nigerian Igbo Young Adults at crossroads: Challenges and the way forward”. The Rev. Albert Nze was the keynote speaker, there was a debate by young adults moderated by Msgr. Nwaorgu and Dr. Amuchie. The young adults from New York staged a play, with comedy and music. The youth choirs from Baltimore and Philadelphia sang at the Mass and performed traditional Igbo dance at the Saturday gala night. The chaplaincy standard was vigorously debated and was adopted and those who wanted language change to the draft standard were given thirty days to submit changes.

The Leadership also addressed ICCUSA financial issues, as we ware no longer getting any financial assistance from the Pastoral Care of Migrants, Refugees and Travelers (PCMRT) within the Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church. We also wanted to address the issue of ICCUSA hosting the National convention. Through the help of the hosting chapter, we coordinated the first ICCUSA brochure, raised enough money to pay for video, photograph, DJ and deposited the profit in our bank. The 2011 convention ended with the election of Dr. Mrs. Offoha of Raleigh, North Carolina as the next President of ICCUSA.

Page 17: Iccusa booklet 128 pages final v2

17Igbo Catholic Community USA - 2014 Convention

Dr/Mrs. Offoha was elected on the second ballot at the ICCUSA convention hosted by the Igbo Catholic community in Newark. With that election, Dr./Mrs. Offoha became the First ICCUSA Female President. Her first official duty was to appoint the executive that will work with her during her two year tenure. The appointments were as follows: Dr. Sylvester Okonkwo from Sacramento served as Vice President, Mr. Josaphet Ohaeri from Chicago served as Secretary, Dr. Nick Muoneke of Houston, served as the Treasurer, Lady Chinyere Odoemena of Newark served as the Financial Secretary, Dr. Emeka Okpala of Atlanta served as Assistant Secretary, while Mr. Alex Iwumune of Baltimore continued to serve as ICCUSA Publicity Secretary. The 2012 ICCUSA convention in Atlanta was a very successful

as Dr. Offoha continued on the Theme of family and young adults. The convention implemented a breakout session after the Keynote speech in which the Young adults were led by Msgr. Nwaorgu and Rev. Sr. Joan Okereke, while Fr. Albert Nze and Dr. Jude

Iheoma led the couples discussion. The 2013 convention focused on youths and witnessed the largest turnout of our youths and young adults in the history of ICCUSA convention. After the powerful keynote speech by Prof. Peter Ejiofor, the youth session was co-chaired by

Rev. Sr. Joan Okereke and Dr. Iheoma. The administration was challenged as the President accepted a professorial job in Nigeria and had to transfer presidential powers to her Vice president Dr. Sylvester Okonkwo to ensure continued leadership of ICCUSA. This administration formalized the Board of Directors for

ICCUSA and made it possible for ICCUSA to have a 501c 3 status. Armed with the tax ID, they were able to open a maiden account in the name of the organization was able to historically file maiden US income tax for ICCUSA. Under Offoha’s leadership, Young Adults were able to join ICCUSA governance and Igbo Readings hit the website during their 2011 -2013 tenure. The ICCUSA leadership implemented the constitutional change in the electoral process that elected Sir Ugochukwu Duru from Brooklyn, New York to lead ICCUSA for the next two years.

Message from National Chaplain of ICCUSA

As the National Chaplain of ICCUSA, and on behalf of all the Chaplains in various chapters of ICCUSA, I wish to express my heartfelt welcome to all the delegates to the 2014 ICCUSA convention here in San Jose. National convention is a fitting ground for our loving communities who share common linguistic and cultural background to reinforce our solidarity and learn from one another.

God’s love for Ndigbo is indisputable, and it beholds us as individuals and communities scattered all over the United States to respond in kind through praise and thanksgiving to

God, and by reaching out in love to our neighbors, starting with our families and fellow Igbo Catholics.

I urge that peace may reign in all the ICCUSA branches. Let the forces hatred and negativism, of division, selfishness, pride, and lust for power be buried underground, replaced by love, peace, and progress, achieved through honesty and selfless service.

May God abide with us all through the convention, and may he bless, guide and lead us safely home at the end of the convention; in Jesus name we pray.

Fr. Okechukwu R. Muoneke National Chaplain of ICCUSA

19Igbo Catholic Community USA - 2014 Convention

It is with great joy that I welcome the Igbo Catholic Community of USA (ICCUSA) to San Jose for the 12th Annual Convention. As part of sustaining the tremendous growth that San Jose Igbo Catholic Community has witnessed for the nine years of its existence, the community took up the challenge of hosting this year’s convention. The planning of ICCUSA convention has been a great revelation of immense potentialities and endearing qualities of members of San Igbo Catholic Community. The entire community like early Christian community embraced the attitude of “one mind and one heart” (Acts 4:32) by generously sharing their gifts of time, talent, and treasure toward a successful planning and hosting of this year’s ICCUSA convention.

San Jose Igbo Community will continue to be grateful to the Diocese of San Jose, especially the bishop of the diocese- Bishop Patrick J. McGrath for his continuous pastoral support of our community. In his letter to mark his first pastoral visit to San Jose Igbo Community on June 8, 2008, the bishop addressed the community in these words, “You are to be congratulated for all that you are doing at the

local level, not only for your efforts to nurture cultural awareness among children of Igbo Catholics in the community, but also for your obvious desire to share your culture, faith, and traditions with others, thereby enriching the entire Diocese of San Jose.” Our community has continued to grow through these words of encouragement. We remain indebted to the old and new pastors, staff, and entire parishioners of St. Francis of Assisi, San Jose, our home parish, for always making us visible in the life of the parish.

The annual convention of ICCUSA has continued to give different communities opportunity to be enriched by the verse uniqueness of each community, by which at the end of each convention, each participating community is propelled to continue to strive for higher goals that are grounded in promoting a faith that is active and living. My unalloyed gratitude goes to the founding members of ICCUSA for their foresightedness, thoughtfulness, and courage to begin this worthwhile national body. Also to the present executives and members of ICCUSA, please continue to sustain the growth of ICCUSA; do not rest on your oars.

Finally, I believe with the amount of time and resources that have been put in planning for this convention, it will turn out be a unique convention that will leave an indelible experiences to all the participants; and at the same time impel each and every one of us to continue being and doing our best in our various faith communities. I pray that the good Lord out of his benevolence will bless our convention and grant us journey mercies to our homes after the convention. On behalf of the entire Igbo Catholic Community of San Jose, I welcome you all to San Jose, the home of Silicon Valley. Nnonu!

20 Igbo Catholic Community USA - 2014 Convention

His Lordship, Most. Rev. Patrick McGrath, Bishop of the Diocese of San Jose California, Rev. Fr. Romanus Okay Mouneke, ICCUSA National Chaplain, Rev.Sister Joana Okereke, Program Coordinator, Cultural Diversity in the Church, our Keynote speaker, Prof. Christian Nwachukwu Okeke, Priests and Religious, ICCUSA Executive, National Delegates, members of deferent Igbo Catholic Communities in the United State of America, Ndi Eze, Ndi Nze Na Ozo, Ndi Chief, distinguish guest, ladies and gentle men, I am highly honored and humbled to welcome you to the 12th annual ICCUSA convention in San Jose.

We have come once again to continue our discussions on the problems facing Igbo Catholic Community in the United States and to identify possible solutions to them. Many a time, Igbo families have found ourselves in difficult situations while trying to strike a balance between family roles, work, and

studies amidst dual/multi-cultures resulting in family instabilities, separation, devoice delinquency in children just to mention but a few. Many family structures are being compromised as a result and the children are not finding it easy either hence our choice of this year’s convention theme - ‘Empowering Youths and Young Adults through Faith, Culture, and family’.

As we deliberate these issues and inject our culture, faith and family values in our problem-solving process, our children gradually embrace our culture and become able to identify the missing link. Their participation in our previous conventions has gone a long way in drawing them closer to our culture and Catholic faith. Many youth and young adults are now fully involved in so many Igbo activities in their local chapters thereby breaking the language (Igbo) barrier which has been the greatest obstacle they face all these years. They are now very active in local Chapter activities that are conducted in Igbo language. Some of them have joined Igbo Choirs, others are Igbo Lay Readers and Igbo Altar Servers. These activities provide the forum and platform for continuous and sustained interaction in Igbo language. The Choir Masters, Conductors, Clergies and the entire members of the Igbo communities are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that Igbo is the only language of choice in all Igbo gatherings and in their homes.

ICCUSA can now proudly state that the emphasis this body has been laying on Igbo culture and Catholic faith is yielding great dividend, the time and money that parents spend touring different states and cities for the past years since the inception of ICCUSA have not been a waste. The quest to understand, speaks, and write Igbo has started gaining grounds among our children. Growing interest for the next

convention is on the increase. Igbo language, which is the bed rock of our culture, is no longer a big barrier as our youth and young adults are working seriously to overcome it.

Furthermore, we cannot deny the fact that we have been greatly enriched by our noble guest speakers. The lessons we learnt from speeches, talks, and lectures from our Speakers these past years have helped and will continue to help in maintaining stability in Igbo marriages, homes, and communities. This then necessitates and becomes a wakeup call to all Igbos in Diaspora to put all hands on deck to promote the evangelization of our catholic faith in Igbo and protect Igbo language and culture from being extinct.

I will like to thank the planning Committee that put this package together for a job well done. Many thanks to the hosting Chapter, ICCUSA San Jose, for working round the clock in making this convention a success especially, Fr. James Okafor, Chief Aidan Ogamba, and Sir Eugene Okafor. Special thanks to Rev. Sister Joana Okereke for her unalloyed support in keeping us moving. To our past Executives whose advice and directions have continued to help in stirring our Organization to the right direction, I say thanks and please continue your good work. To all men and women that contributed in any way in making this convention a success I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

To my wife, Lady Ann Nwannediya Nkechi Duru, thanks for your understanding and support even when the situation is rough and unpleasant. I pray for journey mercies when you all depart to your various destinations. God bless you.

22 Igbo Catholic Community USA - 2014 Convention

It is with great joy and a thankful heart to God that I extend my congratulations to The Nigerian Igbo Catholic Community (NICC), San Jose at St Francis of Assisi Parish for hosting the 2014 Igbo Catholic Community USA (ICCUSA) national convention. The efforts and sacrifices that each and every one of us made towards the success of this convention will be abundantly rewarded by the Almighty God. We recognize and appreciate the involvement and support of our sister communities: Igbo Catholic Foundation-San Francisco, (our parent community)., The Igbo Catholic Community at All Saints in Hayward, Oakland, Diocese, and especially our Chaplains and leadership team. This Tri- Diocesan community has been blessed and we have accomplished so much together by the grace of God who strengthens us.

In the 2005 NICC request letter to the Diocese of San Jose for recognition as an ethnic ministry, we stated that our mission, vision, and goals were to “to foster the propagation of the Igbo culture and language through the Eucharistic celebration and other liturgical services”. The community’s hope is to transfer our cultural richness and encourage Igbo

cultural consciousness among the children of Igbo Catholics in the community. We also aim to share the rich and religious Igbo culture with the rest of the Parish and Diocese of San Jose. Our cornerstone mission is “We work together to enhance and promote the spiritual good of one another and work collectively to promote our catholic culture, tradition, values and religious faith though our liturgy”

On June 12, 2005, our community was inaugurated at St Francis of Assisi Parish, San Jose. On June 8, 2008 we were blessed with the First Pastoral visit of the Bishop of San Jose Diocese, Bishop P. McGrath.

Ever since then we have continued to pursue our purpose of building a community of faith in Jesus Christ guided by our home Parish and embedded in our mission-vision-goals. With our sister communities we have deepened our devotional and liturgical activities: Joint annual retreats for all members, youth and young adults, and for Grandparents. We have joint annual Corpus Christi celebration and procession, joint mother’s and father’s day celebration, a funeral wake-keeping following the Catholic Virgil Liturgy, a joint Fridays Rosary, Parish Stations of the Cross led by our Community during lent, and above all, joint Igbo Mass celebration on first, second, and last Sunday of every month We also include Easter and Christmas day masses. We are sharing our culture by our participation in parish liturgy such as joint ethnic mass at Pentecost. We are on the right track of pursuing our purpose of building a community of faith in Jesus Christ.

at St. Francis of Assisi parish. We three adopted grandmothers

of Fr. James Okafor have appreciated the reverent way

you have taught us to worship our God.We love your music,

the energized dance and your youth who prayerfully and respectfully

present the Prayers of the Faithful. We feel your love at the Kiss of Peace

when we are greeted and hugged by so many.

We extend our prayers for a successful Convention.

Peace of Christ be with you!
