It’s a great privilege to be able to program a theatre season. You get to see the best new shows in development and work with

some of the great arts companies. From this I get to decide what to share with the people of Wagga. What do I want them to feel when they walk through the door? Does this show excite me? Is it exceptional? Does it say something particularly new or does it capture the zeitgeist? I think about the kind of show that I would take my kids to and the kind of show that has ideas that are likely to set the cat amongst the pigeons. I always look for shows that surprise me, shows that question the nature of theatre and I love shows that are huge and dazzling.

In 2015 we have, in many ways, a classic season; the symphony, the circus, Shakespeare, musicals, dance, theatre – but all with a twist. So that is how I would describe this year - classics with a twist.

The 2015 Civic Theatre Season has a bit of everything that drew me to the theatre. I hope it draws you in too.

from the rousing ‘Lone Ranger’ tune in Rossini’s William Tell overture to the seductive sound of cello and strings in

Piazzolla’s great tango, this is a concert that will have you smiling and tapping your toes. Ravel tells classic fairytales in orchestral Technicolor: Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb, Beauty and the Beast – they’re all there.

For the main event of the evening the SSO plays Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony, composed at the end of World War II.

This was meant to be a victory symphony by the Soviets’ celebrity composer. But don’t expect anything ponderous or grandiose: this symphony is like one big sigh of relief – good-humoured and a delight from beginning to end.

ed Kelly sits in his prison cell. Tomorrow he is going to hang. A wounded beast in a cage, defiant till the end. A priest enters

to give him his last rites and it is revealed to be Dan Kelly - Ned’s younger brother believed burnt to death at Glenrowan. Dan is desperate and needs one last thing from his older brother and Ned stands firmly against him.

History tells us that Dan and Ned never saw eye to eye and there is also myth that Dan escaped the fire and disappeared to Queensland. This makes for a brilliantly charged premise, explored beautifully on stage in 80 gripping minutes, weaving Kelly fact, theory and myth while exploring masculinity, brotherhood and the dangerous dynamic of mateship.

Kelly boasts a brilliant cast of three of Brisbane’s finest actors - led by the Matilda Award winning Steven Rooke who plays Ned Kelly in a powerhouse performance with humour, heart and depth.

This new Australian play, Kelly, written by young Queensland playwright Matthew Ryan, was produced by QTC for their 2012 mainstage season. Intimate and compact in design yet a theatrically ambitious drama, which is both contemporary and accessible as it wrestles with themes surrounding one of our country’s greatest historic icons.

he Annual Alice Springs Beanie Festival is fast approaching and Tilly Napuljari is running out of time to finish her new

creation and enter it for judging. Nessa Tavistock, a Sydneysider, has run away to the Red Centre to escape her own problems back in the big smoke.

With time and talk, they realise that despite their differences in language, surroundings and upbringing, they are not so different after all. In making their beanie together, Tilly and Nessa’s stories become entwined and made into a thing of beauty - row by row, colour by colour, yarn by yarn.

Head Full of Love is the story of these two remarkable women and the unlikely but inspiring friendship which forms between them. It invites you to look differently at the possibilities of the humble beanie: a much-loved everyday item, and an extension of ourselves and the everyday lives we wear.

Wesley Enoch directs this intricate, warm and wisely told tale by Australian playwright Alana Valentine (Run Rabbit Run, Parramatta Girls).

Created by award winning company Side Pony Productions (The Pride; The Wives of Hemingway; The Manic Pony), director Zoe Pepper brings you a new interactive audio experience, placing the audience at the centre of the action.

Equipped with masks and headsets, six audience members navigate the space, experiencing the show in the first person. Those who prefer to watch can survey the action from the perimeter, and choose who they want to follow using a personal console to toggle between the audio of different characters.

The Confidence Man is Dogville meets Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt – a morally complex tale complete with goodies, baddies, and a dose of good old fashioned psychotic menace. ey were you there when those fantastic outdoor shows like “Wind in the Willows” and “Toad of Toad Hall” played to huge

audiences down at the Wollundry Lagoon a few years back? Well don’t miss the next hilarious new outdoor show for kids and families coming to the Lagoon in January next year.

The Lizard of Oz is another fantastic locally written, produced and directed outdoor family production. The show has been created by the makers of Backyard Ashes, Mark Grentell and Peter Cox with original songs by Peter J Casey and will be staged outdoors at the Wagga Wollundry Lagoon Foreshore and open as part of the 2015 Australia Day weekend festivities.

In The Lizard of Oz, Dotty and her pet Blue Heeler Dodo are mysteriously transported (via Cyclone Matilda) to the highly bizarre town of Wiggle Waggle just out of Woop Woop! It is one silly place populated by a crazy concoction of characters.

Join Dotty and Dodo as they travel with their hilarious animal friends PC Kookaburra, Bitza the Platypus and the crazy Leonardo De Emu as they make their way to see the wonderful Lizard of Oz.

It is definitely a show for all the family!

A few years ago Rich and Matt decided to shake up the world of kids comedy, and The Listies were born. Since then

they have become Australia’s most sought after family comedians. Hilarious, messy and decidedly insane The Listies sold out shows all over Australia, NZ and the UK, delighting audiences and critics alike.

Imagine The Young Ones hosting Play School – if The Young Ones had downloaded two gigabytes of fart noises. IER In 2014 Monkey Baa Theatre Company created a play and workshop series exploring the themes around The Unknown

Soldier. Who is he, what is he and what does he represent to Australians today?

Set on the battlefields of WW1 and in 21st century Australia, our play follows the dual journeys of a 16 year-old soldier fighting for King and Country, and a modern-day 11 year-old boy who questions how anyone can simply just disappear.

The common thread weaving through all Monkey Baa’s work is the belief that young people’s interests are valued and respected. They strive to ensure that young people, wherever they are located and whatever their economic circumstances, have the opportunity to share in fantastic theatre experiences that reflect their own experience of life in this country.
