Regula ons on Fas ng and Abs nence

The dual disciplines of fas ng and abs nence have a long history in the Catholic

Church. Going back to the early Church, the purpose behind the custom of self

denial is not punishment; it is to simplify our lifestyles so that we create a certain

emp ness. In this way, freed from all distrac ons, we are able to hear and respond

to God’s con nued call to conversion and holiness.

† Fas ng is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics

between the ages of 18 to 59 years (inclusive). On days of fas ng, one full meal is

allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken

according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal.

Ea ng between meals is not permi ed, but liquids are allowed.

† Abs nence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age

and older. Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday are days of

abs nence.

Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regula ons due to ill health or

other serious reasons, they are urged to prac ce other forms of self denial that are

suitable to their condi on. Fas ng, almsgiving, and prayer are the three tradi onal

disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these prac ces

seriously in a spirit of penance and of prepara on for bap sm or of renewal of

bap sm at Easter.

Lent, a Preparation for Resurrection Have you decided what you are going to do for Lent this year? Instead of giving up something you enjoy, consider doing something to help someone else. Help in a food pantry, donate to a clothes closet, visit someone who is ill, write letters to someone who has fallen out of touch, give someone a ride to church or to the doctor. Get involved in the parish outreach projects. See what you can do to make life better or easier for some-one, or work on improving relationships. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Today, in the streets of Rio and New Orleans and in the ca-nals of Venice, Carnival reaches its height. We stand on the brink of Lenten discipline and order, of sacrifice and prayer, and like a diver for pearls, we take a deep breath of life’s abundance before immers-ing ourselves. Literally “Good-bye to the Flesh,” these once were days for clearing out the barnyard and having one last good roast before turning to fish, to eggs and cheese and porridges. In some

places, masks and disguises are worn as a reminder that all falsehood must be stripped away in Lent and our true identity as the baptized must prosper. In others, the green, purple, and gold beads tossed in playful salute have their origins not only in the gifts of the magi, but also entwine the liturgical colors of Ordinary Time, Lent, and Easter. The message, sadly missed by many, is: embrace the Lenten journey, and find your life transformed. Dedicate the next few days to savoring life’s wonders, to the abundance of tables laden with great food and surrounded by the laughter of dear friends. It is I, I, who wipe out, for my own sake, your offenses; your sins I remember no more. — Isaiah 43:25

FORGIVENESS OF SINS Isaiah announced the word of the Lord: “[S]ee, I am doing something new!” (Isaiah 43:19). And what was this new thing? A promise for a people who “did not call upon me” and “grew weary of me” (43:22); a promise of forgiveness. “It is I, I, who wipe out . . . your offens-es; / your sins I remember no more” (43:25). Paul told the Corinthians—and tells us—that Jesus is God’s “yes,” and that all God’s promises are fulfilled in Jesus. Does that include God’s promise to forgive sins? Mark gives the answer when he relates how some people lowered a paralytic through a hole in the roof, seeking a cure. As far as we can tell, no one requested forgiving the man’s sins. But that’s what Jesus did, exactly as Isaiah had announced. Then, lest anyone doubt his authority on earth to forgive sins, Jesus said, “[P]ick up your mat, and go home” (Mark 2:11). INCARNATION CATHOLIC SCHOOL celebrated the 2012 Cath-olic Schools Week with a full slate of activities: -Monday January 30: WELLNESS - 5th to 8th Grade stu-dents organized a mini field day for the younger grades. -Tuesday January 31: ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE - The 2012 ICS Spelling Bee was won by 1st Grader Marissa Mat-tingly (Lower Division) and 7th Grader Teresa Manipadam (Upper Division). -Wednesday February 1: DIVERSITY - ICS celebrated its rich cultural diversity by having an International Spotlight. Pre-K to Grade 4 presented information about Puerto Rico, Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, the Philippines, and Vietnam to our upper grades. -Thursday February 2: FAITH - ICS attended Mass for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Students engaged in different forms of prayer every hour until the end of the day! -Friday February 3: COMMUNITY - ICS welcomed Coach Sharon Slowey back to its campus to address the stu-dent body during its First Friday Morning Assembly. Stu-dents prayed a decade of the Rosary, and received the St. Blaise blessing of throats. Mrs. Laura Schillo and 7th Grad-er Rafael Cruz were the winners in the ICS Nook Raffle! *The ICS community donated over 100 pairs of shoes to the Dominican Republic during Catholic Schools Week. It also donated sporting goods to a local elementary school in need of PE equipment. Finally, in honor of our 100th day of school, our class of 13 Pre-K students collected over 100 canned goods and made a donation to a local shelter!

UKRAINIAN EGG-DYEING: A Tradition of Easter February 23, 6:30-9 pm With Carol Mitchell, PhD Come learn the Eastern European art of wax-resist egg dyeing (or pysanky in Polish) and take a new Easter tradition home with you. You will have the opportunity to make two to three eggs that are yours to keep, plus learn the spirituality of this art form, which has long been considered a form of prayer in many Eastern European countries and cultures. Each participant will receive a personal pysanky egg-dyeing kit, which includes egg dyes, bees’ wax and a stylus used for decorating the eggs. Fee: $25 (includes pysanky kit)

Servicios Litúrgicos durante la Cuaresma

� Durante la Cuaresma tendremos el Vía Crucis en español todos los viernes a las 6:00pm en la Iglesia.

AYUNO Y ABSTINENCIA DURANTE LA CUARESMA Se les anima a todos los miembros de la Iglesia a cumplir con el ayuno durante la Cuaresma. Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo son días de ayuno y de abstinencia de comer carne. Todos los viernes de Cuaresma son días de penitencia y de abstinencia de comer carne. Todos los Católicos desde 14 años están comprendidos bajo la ley de abstinencia. Todos los Católicos de 18 a 59 años están obligados al ayuno. Si alguna persona debido a una enfermedad o cualquiera otra razón no puede seguir estas regulaciones se le pide que practique cualquier otro sacrificio según su condición. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE La cuaresma tiene sus raíces en la preparación para el bautismo de adultos y en el arrepentimiento de pecadores públicos. Ambas se concentran en la conversión y en especial en los tres pilares de la misma. La cuaresma nos da la oportunidad de encontrarnos de manera fuerte y vital con estos tres pilares: ayunar, ayudar y orar. Éstas son las prácticas cuaresmales que la iglesia ha ido proclamando y practicando desde tiempos antiguos. Son prácticas que los cristianos deberíamos emplear todos los días de nuestra vida, pero con mayor fervor durante la cuaresma para poder celebrar dignamente las fiestas de la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. La conversión es un proceso por el cual regresamos a participar de la vida divina que recibimos en el bautismo. Dios Padre mandó a su Hijo para salvarnos. He allí el por qué, el ayuno, el altruismo y la oración es colaborar con Dios. Dios mismo colabora con nosotros derramando su Espíritu en nuestros corazones. SAN POLICARPO (c. 60-155) 23 de febrero San Policarpo fue discípulo del apóstol Juan y conoció a Jesús por medio de él. Fue el mismo Juan quien lo consagró obispo de Esmirna (Turquía). Ahí predicó valientemente la fe y dirigió a su comunidad en tiempos de persecución, pues se les culpó de que “traían

mala suerte” a la ciudad por adorar a Jesús y no a los dioses romanos. Dado que era el líder de la comunidad fue apresado y llevado ante las multitudes reunidas en la arena pública quienes pedían su muerte. Una vez ante la gente y el gobernador, éste le pidió que hablara en contra de Jesús, prometiéndole la libertad. Policarpo respondió: “Ochenta y seis años he servido al Señor Jesús y él no ha hecho nada malo. ¿Cómo crees que voy a blasfemar contra mi Señor y redentor? Soy cristiano”. Fue sentenciado a ser devorado por los leones, pero estos se apartaron de él. Posteriormente, el gobernador ordenó que se le quemara vivo, pero el fuego no le hizo daño.
