‘Consolidated Swachhta Report’ of Activities undertaken on occasion of
“Swachhta Pakhwada” (16-31 December 2018)
The Director and staff members of ICAR-Indian Institute of Water Management, Bhubaneswar
have actively participated in different swachhta activities organized at premises of the Institute on
the occasion of celebration of “Swachhta Pakhwada” during 16-31 December 2018). Day to day
swachhta activities undertaken are summarized as follows:

16.12.2018
Director, ICAR-IIWM administered
‘Swachhta Shapath’ to all the officers and
officials of the Institute. The banners on
‘Swachhta Pakhwada’ were displayed at
entrance of Institute main gate and in front of
Institute main building. The staff were briefed
about various swachhta activities (as per
prescribed schedule given by Council)
planned to be organized during the period of
‘Swachhta Pakhwada’ (16-31 December
2018.
17.12.2018
The old files of bill and establishment section
have been sorted out and some files have been
weeded out. Second phase of clearance of E-
waste of the Institute was initiated. The
cleanliness drive was organized at premises
and rear gate of the Institute and unwanted
weeds were removed. The non bio-degradable
materials such as plastic and polythene were
also cleared.
18.12.2018
The cleanliness cum sanitation drive was
performed in front of Staff residential quarters
of the Institute. The drains were cleaned and
the unwanted grass and broad leaf weeds were
eradicated. The non bio-degradable materials
such as plastic and polythene were also
removed. The awareness was created among
staff on utilization of domestic waste in
compost making.
19.12.2018
The cleanliness cum sanitation drive was
performed at the entry point of Chandpalla
(MGMG village), Kendrapara district, Odisha
An awareness campaign on “Importance of
Swachhta in keeping healthy society” was
organized before cleanliness cum sanitation
drive. The pond embankment was cleaned and
the unwanted grass and broad leaf weeds
including Parthenium were eradicated. The
non bio-degradable materials such as plastic
and polythene were also removed from the
village road.
20.12.2018
An awareness campaign on “Importance of
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan for nation building”
was organized at Vivekananda Siksha
Kendra, BDA Colony, Bhubaneswar. The
teachers were made aware about the
philosophy of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ and
‘Swachhta Pakhwada’ and the techniques of
solid waste management and compost
making. The children would be encouraged
by the teachers to take part in the swachhta
activities and to make science projects aiming
at swachhta concept. Later, the ‘cleanliness
cum sanitation drive’ was organized. The
general cleaning was done and the non bio-
degradable materials such as plastic and
polythene were removed from the school
premises.
21.12.2018
The door to door campaign was organized at
Nalco Nagar Santal Basti, Bhubaneswar to
make the residents aware about the
“Importance of ‘Swachhta’ activities in health
safety and concept of recycling of waste
water”. The residents were made aware about
the cleaning of sewerage and water lines and
techniques of kitchen gardening in residential
colonies. They were motivated to remove the
obnoxious weed ‘Parthenium’ from the
surroundings to prevent respiratory and skin
diseases. Later, the ‘cleanliness cum
sanitation drive’ was organized and the weeds
like Parthenium sp. and Ipomea sp. were
removed.
22.12.2018
The redundant files of various sections of the
Institute have been weeded out. A seminar on
“Conversion of waste to wealth under Swachh
Bharat Abhiyan” (by Dr. P.S. Brahmanand,
Nodal Officer, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan) was
organized to sensitize the staff members about
the background, objectives and progress of
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Group discussion
was held on various issues such as segregation
of bio-degradable and non bio-degradable
wastes at home level and utilization of kitchen
waste in compost making and principles of
solid waste management. Later, a short film
on “Family is the backbone of Swachh Bharat
Abhiyan” was displayed to staff members.
This film received certificate of appreciation
from Ministry of Information and
Broadcasting, Government of India.
23.12.2018
An awareness campaign on “Importance of
cleanliness in keeping healthy society” was
organized in Sri Mukundpur, Puri district,
Odisha. The farmers were briefed about the
background and objectives of ‘Swachh Bharat
Abhiyan’ and importance of ‘Kisan Diwas’.
They were made aware about the negative
effects of obnoxious weed ‘Parthenium sp.’ in
the form of respiratory and skin diseases and
were motivated to remove this weed from the
village surroundings. The seed of crops like
greengram, sunflower, brinjal, okra,
ridgegourd and cucumber and mango saplings
were distributed to beneficiary farmers under
ICAR-IWMI collaborative project (Index
Based Flood Insurance) on the occasion of
Kisan Diwas and Swachhta Pakhwada.
24.12.2018
The door to door campaign was organized at
Xavier’s road, Chandrasekharpur,
Bhubaneswar to make the residents aware
about the “Importance of ‘Swachhta’
activities in health safety and concept of better
sanitation”. The local youth and students of
Maharshi Women’s College, Bhubaneswar
were made aware about the cleaning of
sewerage and water lines and techniques of
sanitation. They were made aware about
removal of the obnoxious weed ‘Parthenium’
from the surroundings to prevent respiratory
and skin diseases.
25.12.2018
The door to door campaign was organized at
Saliasahi, Bhubaneswar to make the residents
aware about the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and
its role in healthy society”. They were made
aware about negative effects of the obnoxious
weed ‘Parthenium’ in the form of respiratory
and skin diseases in human beings and
motivated them to remove this weed from
surroundings. They were also explained
about the techniques of compost making and
kitchen gardening.
26.12.2018
The staff members of ICAR-Indian Institute
of Water Management, Bhubaneswar and
teachers and students have actively
participated in ‘Swachhta’ activities
organized at Vivekananda Siksha Kendra,
BDA colony, Bhubaneswar on the occasion of
celebration of “Swachhta Pakhwada” on 26th
December 2018 (9.30-10.30 AM). The school
children were made aware about the
“Importance of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in
nation building”. They were taught about
negative effects of the obnoxious weed
‘Parthenium’ in the form of respiratory
diseases in human beings and the techniques
of compost making and kitchen gardening.
Quiz competition on “Swachh Bharat
Abhiyan” was held and winners were awarded
with prizes. Banner on ‘Swachhta Pakhwada’
was displayed during the swachhta awareness
campaign.
27.12.2018
The non-biodegradable materials specifically
the polythene bags and other plastic materials
were collected from the institute campus and
dumped in separate pits. Polythene items were
also separated and removed from the dumping
pits in which day to day waste of the institutes
are keeping. Categorically, the non-uses of
polythene bags and plastic items were
discouraged among staffs. The general
cleaning was also done. At the end of the
drive, hazardous affects on use of plastic and
polythene bags in our daily activities were
discussed.
28.12.2018
The cleanliness drive was organized at
approach road to residential quarters of
ICAR-IIWM, Sailashree Vihar, Bhubaneswar
and unwanted weeds were removed. The non
bio-degradable materials such as plastic and
polythene were also cleared. The drainage
line was cleaned and the residents were made
sensitized about the ‘Swachh Bharat
Abhiyan’ and its significant role in making
healthy society. They were encouraged to take
active role in utilization of kitchen waste in
compost making and kitchen gardening. They
were also made aware about the cleaning of
sewerage and water lines and recycling of
waste water.
29.12.2018
The door to door campaign was organized at

make the residents aware about the “Swachhta
Pakhwada and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”.
They were sensitized about the separation of
biodegradable and non biodegradable waste
and its safe disposal. They were also made
aware about eradication of the obnoxious
weed ‘Parthenium’ from the surroundings to
prevent respiratory and skin diseases. Later,
the ‘cleanliness cum sanitation drive’ was
organized and the weeds like Parthenium sp.
was removed.
30.12.2018
The cleanliness drive was organized at avenue
plantation zone of the institute and unwanted
weeds were removed. The general cleanliness
was also done infront of main building and the
non bio-degradable materials such as plastic
and polythene were cleared.
31.12.2018
The door to door awareness cum cleanliness
campaign was organized at XIMB Square,
Chandrasekharpur, Bhubaneswar to make the
residents and shop keepers aware about the
“Swachhta Pakhwada and Swachh Bharat
Abhiyan”. They were explained about the
need for eradication of the obnoxious weed
‘Parthenium’ from the surroundings to reduce
the incidence of respiratory and skin diseases.
They were also made aware about the
techniques of separation of biodegradable and
non biodegradable waste and its safe disposal
and recycling of waste water followed by the
‘cleanliness cum sanitation drive’.
