Application

ALSTOM traction instruments aredesigned to operate under the mostsevere conditions of shock,vibration and atmospheric changesand are ideally suited for use inlocomotives for both main line andshunting operations. They areincluded as standard equipment onmany types of locomotive and theirreliability has been proven overmany years’ service on all regionsof British Railways and on overseasrailways including India, Canadaand France.

Two basic types are available.Moving coil instruments are used tomonitor such parameters as trainspeed and motor load from suitableshunts and transducers. In additionsimplex and duplex pressuregauges, utilising Bourdon tube typemovements, are available tomonitor braking systems.

In addition to the basic pointer typeof moving coil instrument, a specialversion is available with LEDs atmajor scale markings and 3character dot-matrix display. Thesefeatures are used for driverinformation and signallingpurposes.

Construction

A strong clear polycarbonatemoulded case housing is used witha bezel moulded in ABS plastic,with flame retardency to UL94VO,supporting a laminated safety glasswindow. The groundplatesupporting the instrument movementand terminals is moulded in Norylglass filled polyphenoloxide.

Particular attention has been givento providing even, non-glareillumination on the instrument dial.The clear polycarbonate instrumenthousing admits light to theengraved dial from a light sourcemounted behind the panel. The lightis reflected by the pointer and bythe white engraved and filledmarkings on the dial which are thenclearly visible against the blackbackground.

Optional built-in illumination can beprovided in the form of an LED ringof lights attached to the rear of theinstrument and powered by anauxiliary supply. This option isavailable with either one or twobrightness levels, the two leveloption requiring a switch to befitted by the customer.

Moving coil typeinstruments

These instruments are usually currentor voltage rated and operated fromsuitable transducers and shunts.Typical scalings are ‘mph’ for trainspeed and ‘A’ for train motor loadcurrent. Subtitles and red lines areavailable as optional extras.

A standard black bezel is suppliedwith four corner fixing holes. Thepitch circle diameter (PCD) of theseholes is determined by thespecification applied. The followingbezel fixings are available.

Illumination

Built-in illumination can be providedfor both moving coil typeinstruments and pressure gauges.This is in the form of a ring of LEDsattached to the rear of theinstrument, powered by an auxiliarysupply. Table 5 gives details ofvoltages and LED colours that areavailable.
