Dear Family and Friends
A warm welcome to this new year of education here at OLSH! It has been an excellent
beginning and we certainly look forward to celebrating our 80th anniversary year in so
many ways. There will be a number of events and activities that form part of our yearly
calendar where we will celebrate with joy and gratitude the great place that is OLSH
College Bentleigh.
Congratulations to all students and staff on the wondeful start to the year – it is an
absolute privilege to be a part of such a vibrant and dynamic school community filled
with our Heart spirit. In a special way we welcome our new Year 7 students and their
families as well as new students across Years 8-12. Every blessing to our new staff
members for 2018: Ms Annie McGuire (Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching); Mr
Gary Minihan (Business Manager); Mrs Angela Burke, Mrs Julie Freeman-Smith; Ms
Christine Lucas-Pannam; Mr Gary McDonagh; Ms Kylie Shepherd; Ms Melanie Travis.
Welcome back to Ms Jo Bradley and Ms Kellie Mentlikowski.
A constant theme of our life here is our belief that OLSH girls can do anything! May this
be our truth knowing that in the words of Jesus.
I have come that you may have life and have it to the full.

The VCE High Achievers were recognised at the Ceremony of Excellence on 12
February at OLSH College Bentleigh. Members of the College Board were joined by the
Principal, staff, students, the Class of 2017 students and their families. Maria Farag was
awarded Dux of the College. Maria achieved a 97.20 ATAR score and she spoke about
setting goals and being assertive. Sophie Nash who achieved a score of 93.70 spoke
about her secondary school journey and she told the audience it was never too late to
apply yourself and do your best. All students who achieved a score over 90 were also
congratulated. Families then enjoyed morning tea with the staff. We wish the VCE high
achievers and the entire OLSH College Bentleigh Class of 2017 all the very best with
their future studies.
Congratulations to OLSH College Class of 2017 student, Felicia Didulo, whose work
was selected for the Top Designs Exhibition. Hundreds of entries were received and just
18 artworks are chosen for the exhibition which is part of the VCAA’s Season of
Excellence and showcases the best visual communication and design work from
Victoria. Felicia created a range of promotional items for King Candy confectionary
including a logo, a poster, an invitation to the opening and the packaging design. Well
done Felicia, a great achievement.

The opening of the 2018 school year was celebrated with a Mass on 2 February. The
new Year 7 students were welcomed by the Year 12 girls who blessed them with holy oil
and presented them with their House badges. The 2018 student leaders were inducted
and they recited the pledge to lead with distinction. It was a very moving Eucharist and a
fitting way to start the 80th year of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College.
On Tuesday 12 February Sherry Balcombe from the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry visited
OLSH to induct two new FIRE Carriers.
Since 2011 OLSH College has been committed to the promotion of reconciliation with
our indigenous brother and sisters through our involvement as a FIRE Carrier school.
FIRE stands for ‘Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education.’ The Year 8 classes
participated in the ceremony facilitated by Sherry and the senior FIRE Carriers.
Congratulations to our two new College FIRE Carriers, Aditi Talwar and Lauren Rossi.
Thank you girls for what you will do to promote reconciliation in our College community.

We congratulate all students who have been elected for a leadership position in 2018.
These students received their leadership badge at the Opening School Mass. This year
we have been blessed to have 40 students on our Student Leadership Team with
students from Years 7-12. This year we hope to bring you an insight into who they are
and what they see are important facets of our OLSH community. Here are a few of their
hopes for the community for 2018.
Georgia Sheppard - Year 12 I'm Georgia Sheppard, College Captain for the year, and a proud Xavier girl! This year, I hope that the community has a fantastic celebration for the 80 year milestone, and that we can add some new twists to our annual events. For new students to the College and our Year 7s, I recommend that you give everything a go – you'll never know about hidden passion or talent if you never take a risk!
Maria Blassis – Issoudun
Hi my name is Maria Blassis and I’m the Issoudun Sweeney House Captain for 2018.
My hopes for the OLSH school community for 2018
is that by the end of the year everyone has a new friend in every single year level in their House.
My advice for new students and Year 7s, is to really
embrace the OLSH spirit at house events, PAS, Masses and every day at school.
Ashley Vinci - Year 8 My name is Ashley Vinci. I am currently in Year 8 and in Sweeney House. OLSH is such a close community; you could even call us a family. As a student I am honoured to attend a school in which we are so close. I would like to broaden friendships and encourage events within the school that help to strengthen friendships to the fullest. My advice for the Year 7s and students that have recently joined the OLSH community is to pursue activities that individually represent and interest you.
Nickila De Silva - Year 11 My name is Nickila De Silva. I'm in Xavier House and in Year 11. My hopes for the OLSH community for 2018 is that we grow closer together as a community, by helping not only one another, but the greater OLSH community, with all of the fundraisers and events we organise. I hope that all new students embrace all the opportunities and programs OLSH offers whether it be debating, robotics, or sports. There is something for everyone to try.
The year has started with a renewed House spirit with the new pastoral system. The
senior students have certainly taken on more of a leadership role in looking out for the
girls in the junior classes and it has been wonderful to see the way that all students have
responded and embraced something new.
Research tells us that if students are well known and feel a great sense of belonging
that this impacts learning. Our girls will now not only meet and have conversations with
peers horizontally, at their year level, but also vertically in Houses, leading to greater
interconnectedness across year levels. As Peter Bernard (2010) states this enables
confidence, trust and leadership to grow and allows the students to be responsible for
each other. As confidence
and self- esteem
increases this in turn
leads to “students
becoming better
learners”- Peter Bernard
(2010).
A number of students
across all year levels
have volunteered to be a
part of the student voice
group. We thank them for
their time and for the input
that they have given so
far this year.
The House System will also enhance parent relationships within the school community.
If you have questions regarding your daughter please ensure that you contact her
Learning Mentor (Homeroom Teacher) or her Head of House.

In my Year 12 English class we were completing a practice text response for the
Hitchcock suspense film ‘Rear Window’. Before I collected the essays I asked the girls
to provide me with some insight into their perceptions of how they went – using the
WWW (not world wide web) strategy – What Went Well. Knowing a few of the girls
struggled with this task I was hoping to drive their thinking away from gloom and doom
and towards the positives. The next bit of feedback I asked for was using the acronym
EBI – Even Better If – meaning for next time it would be even better if I…and
encouraging the thinking towards where to next rather than a bottom line. I also asked
my students for feedback on their processes in preparing, effort and how they will
improve. I hope you noticed as you are reading this – I am trying to place the children in
the driver’s seat of their development rather than them being the passenger.
Carol Dweck a world renowned educational researcher and author is a great advocate
of growth mindset. Her research spans thirty years and overwhelmingly supports
mindset being the biggest indicator for success. Many of our girls due to the stage of
adolescence seek approval from their peers and from the adults in their life and see
failure as a final outcome. Many will only participate in activities where they are sure to
shine and avoid those experiences where the outcome is too risky or the potential for
failure is too great. Our role as the adults in their lives is to guide their thinking towards
setting goals, expecting setbacks and being open to learning from each setback.
Occasionally I will bring in my family’s giant rubber band ball and my youngest child’s
Rubix Cube. I attempt to draw the conversation to the Rubix Cube being a fixed
outcome – all colours sorted together – outcome based aka fixed mindset.
We then turn our attention to the rubber band ball. It is multi-coloured with many rubber
bands of varying width and strength. I describe to the girls that every band is a new bit
of learning – and with every added band the ball becomes more bouncy and more fun
aka growth mindset. We need our children to understand how much they are capable of
and to see the roadblocks, failures and sideways steps as adding value to their learning
journey in life.
My group of Year 12 girls have let me know they are open to growing. They have let me
know they will embrace collaboration rather than simply being cooperative. They will
share their learning with others and they will accept feedback with an open heart. The
girls have informed me they want to become great communicators and will endeavour to
start creating their own rubber band balls which by the end of Year 12 will be colourful
and incredibly bouncy. OLSH girls can do anything.
Thank you all who attended the VCE Excellence Ceremony. It was wonderful to hear
from Maria Farag, the DUX of 2017 and from Sophie Nash a High Achiever. A great
celebration of what is possible with an OLSH education.
Correction
In the Summer 2017 issue of Flame magazine the Year 7 winner of the Glen Eira City
Council Award was incorrectly listed. Emily Collins was the winner of this award. We
apologise for the inaccuracy and congratulate Emily on such a great achievement.

Suzy Pask, Head of Mathematics at OLSH College, presented a session at the
Mathematics Association Victoria (MAV) conference in December 2017. The conference
was titled “Achieving Excellence”.
Suzy has studied many authors who write on how to teach mathematics in today’s
classrooms. Professor Jo Boaler (Stanford University) is a mathematician who talks
about the importance of ensuring all students can achieve in Mathematics. Suzy has
used much of her work as a basis for her teaching in the classroom.
Suzy’s presentation was titled “Using formative feedback – make it useful, make it
quick!”
She talked about the importance of measuring student progress during units of work and
recording this in excel files. Her presentation demonstrated how to use excel to record
the skills that students have or need to master,
and then how to report on these. The
Mathematics Department at OLSH have
discussed this reporting method and many of
Suzy’s ideas as ways to improve our teaching of
Mathematics.
Maths Hub is available to all students from Years 7 – 12 on a Monday afternoon in the
Library 3:30 – 4:30pm. A Mathematics teacher is available for tuition and support at
every session. Students sign in at the library desk and registration is not mandatory.
The Language Faculty started 2018 with a bang.
This week marks the end of Carnevale in Italy, bringing in the Lenten period and on
Saturday Chinese New Year will be celebrated with this the year of the Dog.
By way of acknowledgement of these two festivals, there is a display in the Library
which highlights some significant elements.
For example: Did you know that Carnevale marks the period before Easter and is a time
of feasting and celebration?
Did you know that Carnevale ends with “martedì grasso” (Shrove Tuesday)?
Did you know that the traditional Italian Easter cake is the Colomba and is in the shape
of a dove?
Did you know that, according to Asian astrology, your year of birth and the animal
represented by it, determines a great deal about your personality?
On another note, we are pleased to welcome Mr Wei Liu to the Languages teaching
team. He will be teaching Year 7 Chinese.
We wish all the Chinese families in our community a very happy New Year.

“Being in the musical has been a great opportunity. We have progressed so well in
rehearsals and are flying through the show. I have had so much fun learning the dances
and singing all the awesome songs. Another great addition to rehearsals is that I’ve
been able to meet so many new people from all different year levels. Being a lead has
also given me a new outlook on rehearsals and has made me work even harder.”
