welcome to this week’s edition of hypersun mirdif. as an extra feature in this issue, we asked you about your plans for celebrating mother's day. the answers are just as moving as you'd expect, and what is especially surprising is how similar the celebrations seem to be from culture to culture. Fascinating - and i promise there won't be a dry eye in the house! we also take this opportunity to focus on the traffic congestion so many of us experience on al rebat street, and what the rta plan to do. meanwhile, you'll find a good selection of local news and events listed here in this issue of hypersun. if there’s a topic that you want to discuss, please contact me on [email protected] and i’ll make sure to answer you personally.

happy Birthday!

mirdif City Centre was one year old this week, celebrating its first birthday on march 16th. as we all know, the mall has been a considerable success and has become one of the flagship components of the mirdif neighbourhood. Located at the junction of emirates road and al rebat, mirdif City Centre was built to capture up to 20 million shoppers a year. the mall has more than 430 stores and was designed from day one to have multiple-access parking and 7000 parking spaces. mirdif City Centre is also the 12th largest mall in the world, in terms of its gross surface area – a massive 289,528 sq.metres! (it’s almost exactly the same size as mall of the emirates). it is also bigger than any mall in europe, africa or australasia. mirdif City Centre was also the first mall to be awarded a Gold medal for Leadership in energy & environmental design - a much coveted international prize.

TRAFFIC

in a jam...

everyone driving up al rebat street towards mirdif City Centre and the interchange with d56 knows all too well the horrific tailbacks that the junction is prone to. those wanting to turn left into d56 (going, for example, to uptown mirdif or u-turning to mirdif CC) often experience delays of up to 20 minutes. plus, the situation isn’t helped by the way that al rebat dramatically changes from being virtually a motorway into a suburban route within a couple of hundred metres. drivers will often need to slow down drastically to avoid piling into the back of the waiting traffic queues. a representative of the rta said: "we are fully aware of this situation, and our plan is to extend the capacity of al rebat street up to and beyond this junction. we advise drivers going to mirdif City Centre to take the first right-hand filter road as marked, turning off before the junction and avoiding the queue.”

top us casual fashion brand Jersey Joe is about to launch here in mirdif. the firm is best-known for its jumpers, cardigans and t-shirts, all reflecting an extremely hip new york style – and known to be worn by top media artists such as sean John and eminem. Jersey Joe was originally founded in tribeca, new york, in 1978 (where brands such as sacoor brothers and soboho started, too). Jersey Joe takes its name from the famous american fighter, Jersey Joe walcott – but despite the catchy name, built its brand relatively slowly, with a few items of top-quality clothing released into key trendy outlets in new york and London’s King’s road. but after 30 years, Jersey Joe stands as one of the foremost knitwear labels, with an international clientele that shortly looks set to include both locals and expats here in mirdif. Launch date? before the spring is out.

pooper-scoopers

there’s dog poo everywhere. residents in mirdif have been complaining about finding heaps of it in and around the community. heaps of fly infested dog waste make it very difficult for the residents to move around on foot. this is a matter of concern because residents can no longer enjoy taking walks either with their kids or even pets for that matter. many people are ignorant about the hazards and think that it serves as a good fertilizer. on the contrary it’s just the opposite! dog waste can be just as toxic as chemicals and oil spills, to the environment. it's hazardous and can spread disease-passing parasites like hookworms, roundworms, etc. to humans. the worms in dog waste can lead to blindness in humans, especially in children - and it's imperative that playgrounds are kept clean at all times.

owners must always 'bag up' their dog's mess while taking the animal for a walk - never leave it by the sidewalk or roadside, even when there is greenery or grass. the near-impossible task of finding a store in mirdif that actually sells self-sealing poo bags does not help the situation either. but let's all keep mirdif free from dog poo hazards. it's imperative and not so difficult.pooper-scooper, anyone?

RESIDEnTIAL

mirdif close to top

Figures just released by the real estate regulatory agency (rera) show that among english-speaking expats - ie, british, americans, australians, Canadians and some south africans - mirdif is now the no. 2 choice when it comes to finding a place to live. Jumeirah came in at no. 1 - and no surprises there, because it has always been favourite, ever since records started. what is perhaps surprising, however, is that mirdif has stormed ahead of the communities of 'new dubai', such as the springs,Greens, Lakes and meadows. not only that, but it seems that mirdif is closing the gap on Jumeriah - proving that value, open space and great new malls are a winning formula.

daLaL aL shamary23, iraqi, sales executive at restonic

i travel to uptown mirdif every morning for work. i travel to work by car, i don’t have my licence yet so it’s either my dad or brother who drop and pick me up.

what appeals to you most about the area?i like uptown mirdif because the environment here is very calm and composed. i don’t like the hustle and bustle in other malls. as a sales executive, my job gives me the chance to meet and speak to all kinds of people, which is really good for me because i was a very shy girl before. i also like visiting mirdif City Centre.

tell us your story. how does life here continue your story?i came to the uae in 2001, after completing my final grade 7 exams back home in iraq. initially we lived in ajman for 2 years and then moved to sharjah. that’s where i live now. i live with my parents and 3 siblings. i am the oldest child in my family.after completing my schooling,

i joined the Computer College in al Garhoud and graduated with a degree in business administration. after my graduation i did a few small courses to help me improve my english language skills. since coming to uae, i have visited iraq only twice. in fact the last time i visited, i could not even last a month there. it is really sad there because of the war and you can no longer enjoy any kind of freedom. i cannot see myself going back.

i started working for restonic in november 2009. i can’t believe i’m already in my second year. i'm very much enjoying working in mirdiff, i have to say - there is something very nice about it here.

what do you think of the facilities here in mirdif – for example, transport?i haven’t really used any modes of public transport enough to know or judge. i would really like to try the metro – i think it would be a great way to get around dubai.as for mirdif itself, at the moment, i depend on getting around in friends’ cars.

randini kaLansoorya36, sri Lankan, sales assistant, mothercare

i came to dubai in February 2009 and i’ve worked in mirdif for more than a year now. before uptown mirdif i had worked at other mothercare branches in ibn battuta and Jumeirah. but i asked to be transferred here because it is closer to where i live, in international City. unfortunately, as soon as i got transferred the route of bus# 365 also changed. so now it takes me 3 hours a day just to commute between home and work, when actually by car it takes only 10 minutes.

what appeals to you most about the area?to be very honest, other than the malls that i’ve worked in, i haven’t been out much, at all. i came to dubai to earn a better living for my family and i restrict myself from indulging in too many unnecessary expenses. i’m homesick and i miss my little boys. i would like to see the dubai mall though, hopefully soon (smiles). i really like what i've seen of mirdif, though.

tell us your story. how does life here continue your story?i used to teach economics to a level students of grades 12 and 13, in sri Lanka. i enjoyed teaching economics because it is a subject based on pure logic and can be applied to almost everything in our daily lives. a teacher’s earning in a government school is very little, though. that’s the reason i came to dubai - to earn more. even though i’m not a teacher anymore, i do keep myself updated by reading the world development report. my husband and 2 young boys are back home in sri Lanka. my husband has a mobile accessory shop in sri Lanka. he imports all kinds of mobile accessories from dubai. either he comes to dubai, once a year, to make his purchases or i send the goods over.

what do you think of the facilities here in mirdif – for example, transport?i would like to see better bus route options. the logical economist in me doesn't like to waste three hours!

Mirdif“i like mirdif because the environment here is very calm and composed; i don't like hustle and bustle in other malls..."

karen Jackson48, scottish, housewife

we moved to dubai in september last year and have lived in mirdif ever since.

what do you like or dislike about the area?i like mirdif a lot. For example, we have friends living in palm Jumeirah and i think it’s quite a fun place to live, but for me i’d pick mirdif any day, any time. we don’t live in a compound, which is great. i quite like the fact that the villas are not stacked up like a bunch of cards. although i wish mirdif was on a beach. i love the beach.

tell us your story. how does life here continue your story?i lived in scotland for 25 years. i graduated from secretarial school and worked at my parent’s greeting card shop. i met my husband when i was vacationing in tenerife. he proposed to me on the very first day he met me. my husband used to be in the army, so we’ve moved around quite a lot. i’ve lived in several different countries over the

years—northern ireland, holland, Germany, Cyprus and now i’m here, in dubai. before coming to dubai i lived in Camberley for 12 years. over the years i have explored many career options. i’ve worked for naaFi, ysL, aVis; i even did a ceramics course in holland. my husband works for a fuel company in dubai. my son is currently studying in manchester and my daughter who came along with us will be pursuing her final year in school very soon. i like the fact that people are quite friendly out here. it’s nice to see the diversity in culture. Currently i am planning to train as a hairdresser. when we retire, we plan to go to Greece.

what do you think of the facilities here in mirdif – for example, transport?i don’t think there could be many improvements in transport – it’s fine. i use the metro quite often; i think it’s an excellent transport system. the rashidiya metro station is only a 10-minute drive from my house. i usually park in the free car park outside the station and make my way to the metro. it's very convenient.

nakayiza marJoLie26, Kenyan , sales associate

i stay in Jumeirah but have been coming often to mirdif, since mirdif City Centre was opened.

what do you like or dislike about the area?it's a quiet place and not so crowded. the whole area looks new and fresh and once you are here, it looks as if you have left all the stress of dubai behind you. but business seems to be slow. For anyone looking for a stress-free environment without temptations of the city, this is the place to be.

tell us your story. how does life here continue your story?i am a sales executive with ted baker and i always go to the beach or parks during my off-days, because i always wanted to be somewhere quiet. i had never imagined myself having anything to do with mirdif because i didn't have even a friend staying there. however, after the inauguration of the mirdif City Centre mall, i decided to come around and check out how the mall was.

when i got here, my opinion changed completely. the place looked so quiet, beautiful and serene. the mall hosts most of the top brands that you can find anywhere else around the uae. the difference is that here, it is quiet and beautiful. it's more of a combination of modernity and nature. i always love to come here whenever i feel like getting lost in tranquility and serenity. For me, this is the advantage that mirdif has over all those other areas, attractive though they may be.

what do you think of the facilities here in mirdif – for example, transport?Compared to the Festival City (where i work), transport here is easily accessible and stress free. you dont have to wrestle and tussle for a taxi. buses come on time. i guess that eventually, it would be good to try driving around here in mirdif - it would be a good, central place to depart from and connect with all the other areas of dubai.

For the time being, though, i'm happy to stay with public transport and it's quite efficient in this area.

Lights, camera, action! after 6 months, of rehearsing, learning lines, warming up, dancing, costume fittings and promotional performances – raffles international school west Campus - Junior school made history by performing the first school musical “on the radio” at duCtaC theatre in mall of the emirates.

“on the radio” is a story of

how the radio has brought fun and enjoyment into the lives of people throughout the twentieth century. marvelous mike and Jivin’ Judy took their audience from the 1920s, through the great depression, world war 2, the 1950s, 1960s and then finally the 1980s. the show makes a serious point: that the radio has been - and remains - one of the most important tools for shaping the way that society lives, works and plays.

this was a demanding, challenging production and took a huge amount of careful preparation. but it was also truly worthwhile and rewarding. plus, the talent on stage was just unbelievably fantastic!!

SpORTS

thanks a Billion on march 8th, raffles international school south Campus hosted an environmental Fun run. the goal this year was to raise money to take part in the emirates environmental Group’s million tree Campaign, which supports the united nations’ billion tree Campaign. the Junior and high school students

had 45 minutes to run as many laps as they could to collect sponsorship for each lap they complete. mattias , a Grade 3 student, ran 9 laps. “we ran in the Fun run to save the earth, we are going to buy trees and plant them outside this school. trees take away all the pollution, and they give us food and oxygen.” eivind, in Grade 4, earned the record for the most laps, 12 times in total. he was so determined that he didn’t take a break for the entire 45 minutes. “i ran 12 laps because i like to run. i also came in first place in the beach run.” eivind said. “it is important to plant trees in the uae because trees help the air.”

t ennis is one of the fastest-growing sports here in dubai,

and if you want serious training or coaching, look no further than the mirdif tennis training academy,

Why has French cooking captivated the world and

created the perception of being simply the best? the answer can be found in one word: quality. Visit

nestled conveniently next to mirdif City Centre. although only a stone’s throw from emirates road, the academy is a haven of calm professionalism, welcoming

even an average French bistro and you’ll find an unrelenting commitment to fresh ingredients (parisian café managers don’t blanche at 5-00am trips to the

players of all ages and abilities and open to both women and men. there are all the facilities you’d expect, including floodlit night-time playing (almost as bright as daylight). but - make no mistake - the key attraction here is the quality of the training. resident professionals are on hand to guide every level of player, taking novices from the absolute basics (complete beginners more than welcome) to intensive, specialist coaching of more advanced players looking to develop particular areas of their game. so strong is the coaching element here that top Grand slam doubles player mahesh bhupathi chose the club to be the dubai home of his mahesh bhupathi training academy. this is the first venue that mahesh has set up outside of india – and

market). the quality offer is often set in a rugged, basic cafe environment that really isn’t anything special – just a few chairs and tables in which to enjoy brilliant food. enter Le pain Quotidien, an international chain of French cafes with no fewer than seven outlets in dubai (two in mirdif alone!). this is just about the harshest interpretation of the quality rule that you’ll find. there’s scrubbed wooden surfaces everywhere (all the wood is reclaimed, so no trees were cut down), the tables feel a bit like sandpaper and the chairs look like something from a Van Gogh sketch. but at least it’s a place to sit while you enjoy scrumptious – if avowedly basic – food.

scrumptious is certainly is. i always order a big, three-egg omelette haere and have it with warm French bread and lashings

the objective is to enhance your tennis skills intensively, whatever your current level of ability. mahesh set up the academy thanks to an initiative by he mohammed al merri, General secretary of tennis emirates. a key feature of the academy here in mirdif is that it provides a very warm welcome; simply drop in – and you never know what your future might hold…

of butter. Creating the best bread is a mission on its own here in Le pain Quotidien. their objective is to serve bread which is ‘crusty and wholesome’. it is. and the omelette is eggy, hot and more-ish. a great touch of French authenticity is found with every coffee cup. order a cappuccino and the cup is as big as a bucket and has no handle. exactly what you’d find in a provincial French bistro. or here in mirdif..

Girls today

...Leaders tomorrow

Great women leaders did not start as women, they were girls first.

As research proves, single gender education allows girls to excel academically, grow in self-esteem, display better leadership qualities and develop the confidence to succeed in today's highly complex and competitive world. At AAG we will play a critical role in educating, developing and transforming your daughters into future leaders, whichever path they choose to tread. Our girls develop skills that equip them to handle the new and complex challenges in today's and tomorrow’s world.

They are nurtured to become culturally aware citizens in a culturally diverse educational community. Their social, emotional and physical development is entrusted to our internationally trained teachers who share our vision and deliver an enhanced American curriculum in modern facilities suited to girls and comparable to the top U.S. private schools.
