an understanding of rock cycle processes that form each rock in the rock cycle, when asked what process: lithification, crystallization, or heat and pressure forms each type of rock, you will be able to describe each process that must occur for each rock to be formed without error.

Sedimentary Rock
• 1. Made from sediments weathered off of earth.
• 2. Have distinct layers.
• 3. Made by weight pressure of sediments on top of each other.
• 4. Some made by minerals that cement sediments together.
Characteristics:

Metamorphic Rock
• 1. Are morphed rocks.
• 2. Form deep in the earth by heat and pressure.
• 3.Rocks morph at 100 degrees Celsius.
• 4. The pressure comes from rocks above pressing down.

Igneous Rock
• 1. Oldest kind of rocks.
• 2. Made deep within earth from magma.
• 3. Can cool inside earth (intrusive) and form crystals.
• 4. Can cool on earth's surface (extrusive) and are dark in color.

Process 1: Lithification
Formation of sedimentary rocks
• 1. Sediments are weathered, eroded, and transported to new areas mainly by water.
• 3.Sediments then are cemented together by dissolved minerals in water and are now actual rock.
• 2.Sediments are deposited and compacted together by pressure that squeeze the particles together for less open space.

Process 2: Heat & PressureFormation of metamorphic rocks
• 1. Form from other types of rocks.
• 2. Form under the surface where pressure is great.
• 3. Form where come in contact with magma, BUT CANNOT melt or would be igneous rock.
• 4. Formed by heat that morphs the original rock.

Process 3: Crystallization
• 1. Form from molten magma & lava.
• 2. Can form underground (intrusive) when magma gets trapped & cools slowly, forming crystals.
• 3.Can form above ground (extrusive) when volcanoes erupt & they cool fast forming black light rocks.

• 1. Make groups of 2 people, and go to a lab station.
• 2. Study the rocks given to you, and decided what rocks are which kind (sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous).
• 3. Group the rocks with the label of the process (lithification, heat & pressure, and crystallization) that it must go through to be made.
