Why the possible duopoly?
Source: Macquarie Asset Management, August 2021. Key assumptions: round trip efficiencies: Battery=85%, hydrogen=31%, hydrogen storage in underground caverns at $50/kg hydrogen capex, above ground at $300/kg. Above ground chosen for more than 30cycles per year. Electricity cost to charge at $0.03/kWh, electrolyser utilization 25%. For batteries a life expectancy of 20 y or 5000 cycles (first reached) is assumed, for electrolysis 25y and for underground storage 50y.
Even the most ambitious battery cost does not compete with hydrogen on seasonal storage Hydrogen unlikely to get
cheap enough to replace batteries with high cycle frequency
Very cheap, energy efficient storage needed to challenge hydrogen
Battery Hydrogen
Poor round trip efficiency
Suitability High cycle application

Why so much interest in H2
- Can be produced from excess electricity or from fossil fuels
- Can be stored cheaply underground or transformed (NH3, e-fuels)
- Can be imported for security of supply
- Can be re-converted into heat, electricity.
- Can decarbonize hard to abate sectors (long range transport, industry, steel, …)

The Korean context
• Renewable energy is space intensive.
Korea is unlikely to become energy self- sufficient with solar or wind.
MAM. Assumptions 20% efficient solar panels, 50% ground coverage ratio, 1350 full load hours, 8MW/km2 power density for wind, 30% capacity factor, Primary energy demand 32000TWh, Electricity demand 558TWh/y, assuming 35% average electric generation efficiency, Assuming 1 to 1 replacement of non-electric primary energy demand by electricity in a renewables based scenario. The Australian comparison
• Great solar (and wind) resources.
• Very low population density (3/km2)
Australia alone could easily supply the world’s energy demand with solar energy.

Hydrogen vehicles at energy cost disadvantage over battery vehicles

• But economies of scale may be missing with most of world favouring battery EVs
• A combination of the above
Electrolysis
Why the best option is not self-evident • Nuclear looks attractive
for electricity (but not for H2)
and has lowest import dependency
• Fossil fuel attractiveness depends on CCS (significant
unknowns) and commodity cost (large price swings possible)
• Hydrogen imports look potentially attractive for non-electrified uses (large unknowns about actual cost)

Input energy Transformation
Renewable electricity $10-20/MWh
The vehicle technology question • Battery technology is good
enough for most users
• Hydrogen vehicles lack an energy advantage (and have a serious disadvantage when non-hydrogen clean electricity is available).
• The hydrogen solution requires the highest physical import volumes (largest number of vessels).
• A CCS solution requires the highest quantity of energy imported. Hydrogen import

The vehicle system integration • Daily electric load variations
are maximum ±15GW • Daily loads on power plants
could be levelled by: • ≈100GWh of battery storage
could level daily loads • Or 30GW of fuel cell vehicles
• Korea’s current vehicle fleet 24million cars (source: Statista)
24 million BEV @50kWh = 1200GWh (electric demand increase from EV charging 200GWh/day)
Source of load profile: Korea Electricity Security Review, IEA 2021. Hypothetical load profile with EV fleet smart charging MAM.
Smart charging of EV’s can level load differences between night and day. With smart charging, additional power plant needs would likely be as small as ≈5GW Likelihood: High Impact: Moderate
24 million FCEV @50kW = 1200GW
If FCEVs were vehicle to grid enabled and 7% of Korean cars were plugged in at any time, Korea could mothball all power plants. Likelihood: Low Impact: Very high
BEVs can have a high impact by matching charging to solar & wind generation and supplying energy to the grid when needed.
Potential impact in Korea Solar & wind heavy markets
A FCEV fleet could theoretically supply all electricity needs to the grid (but likely won’t)
A BEV fleet would increase electric demand

Stationary storage in Korea
• Hydrogen storage for strategic, not seasonal reasons.
• Hydrogen use dependent on energy procurement case
In the absence of an electric system heavily reliant on wind & solar, there is very limited need for short duration (battery) storage. Korea may install some storage for cost optimization purposes
If battery electric vehicles get traction in Korea, the need for stationary storage is likely to decrease further (due to smart charging and potential vehicle-to-grid functionality)
Behind the meter storage, particularly for rooftop solar owners may become of interest to avoid high residential electricity tariffs when solar is not supplying demand (particularly during evening hours)
If Korea choses to import hydrogen, it will likely require strategic storage to avoid exposure to supply disruptions (similar to LNG market). Korea is however unlikely to use hydrogen as seasonal storage as we expect to see in markets with high solar energy generation.
Hydrogen usage in Korea could be driven by the following: - industrial needs in industry, particularly in steel manufacturing - Electricity generation (if hydrogen is imported) - Process heat (and potentially space heating) - Use in transportation could be modest (BEV competition on road,
ammonia on the sea, e-fuels in the air)
• Korea has different market drivers from many other markets regarding storage and hydrogen
• Korea has limited domestic renewable energy potential (contrary to the global picture)
• Intermittent solar & wind are the main driver for storage (and hydrogen) interest in much of the world
• In Korea, hydrogen’s importance is likely driven by needs to import clean energy (not by long duration storage needs)
• For decarbonization, Korea can consider 3 options, or a mix thereof
• Nuclear (with domestic hydrogen production where needed)
• Fossil fuel import with CCS
• Hydrogen (or a hydrogen carrier) import
• These circumstance make hydrogen vehicles more viable than in most markets (but global BEV dominance may still kill it)

Beyond energy shifting, there are additional drivers for storage
which are the main drivers for storage deployment in the short term
Grid stability services: High renewable penetration displaces the natural inertia of spinning generators. Storage provides synthetic inertia to maintain grid stability.

Ramp rate control: Storage can relax ramp rate constraints for fuelled dispatchable power plants.
Peak shaving: It is becoming cost effective to serve short duration peaks from storage rather than bespoke peaker power plants
Network upgrade deferments: Storage can defer network upgrade requirements by averaging line utilization, rather than having to accommodate peak demands
