President’s Message It has been an absolute honor to serve Kansas dental hygienists

this past year. I want to thank my husband, Vic, my family and

the students and faculty at Wichita State University for

supporting my efforts to make an impact in the future of our

profession.

As I prepare the final message to our members, I reflect on why I

made a commitment to serve KDHA and support the Strategic

Plan for 2015-18. Thanks to Oral Heath Kansas and KDHA, I was

invited to attend the Dental Champions program where on the

top of a mountain above Colorado Springs, my goals were set to

finish a Master of Science degree and serve KDHA in a leadership

role. This past year has been so exciting for me as a leader

working to unite, empower and support the dental hygiene

profession.

Through the strategic plan, the KDHA Executive Committee

worked diligently to support the needs of all dental hygienists in

clinical practice, community health or education. The new Policy

and Procedure manual, along with the Charter agreement

addendum, will ensure our leaders have a solid infrastructure to

keep our association secure and relevant in the future. Our

continued advocacy efforts in Topeka with more 200 participants

promoted the dental therapist legislation. Ongoing efforts will

ensure that dental hygienists are valued and integrated in the

broader health care delivery system to improve the public’s oral

and overall health.

Visit us at www.kdha.org

In July, we held our first Webinar, in conjunction with our

Wichita summer meeting, “upping the technology” to

improve participation was particularly challenging for my

skill set, but I am so proud to be a part of this new

experiment! President Elect, Frances Reichmuth, will

lead KDHA thru investigation of an updated, member

friendly web site among her various vision points and

goals for next year. This is an exciting time to be a part of

KDHA and I wish Frances and the executive committee

the very best in continuing the forward march.

Let’s “Reach for the Stars” as we gather with retained

and new members in Topeka for our September Annual

Session! Be sure to review the registration information

in this issue to review helpful courses for your practice

setting. Join me in sharing the vision and cheering on

new leadership for KDHA!

“Prevention and Treatment of the Wear and Tear on Oral Tissues” (3 CEU’s)

Speaker: Marti Santizo, RDH, MS

Course Description: Dental caries is preventable, yet it continues to be the most common chronic

disease in children. The price paid for dental caries is not only measured in the money spent on

restorative procedures, it is also measured in the effects it has on overall health and well-being.

During the early 1900s, the focus of dentistry changed from extract to restore. With the knowledge

and tools available in this century, it is time to shift from restore to prevention.

Management of the caries-prone patient requires a multifaceted approach - caries risk assessment,

in office care, patient education, and at-home regimens. This approach has been in the forefront

for treating the at risk population. Fluoride therapies play an important role in the in-office and

at-home fluoride treatment programs in the prevention and management of dental decay. It is an

accepted but often under-utilized therapy. This program will provide the participant with an

overview of caries development, the incidence and prevalence of dental decay in various populations, and the role of in-office and

at home fluoride therapies in the management of patients who are at risk for caries development. An overview of Caries Risk

Assessment will also be presented.

Speaker Bio: Marti Santizo is an Academic Relations Manager for Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals covering the Pacific and North-

western United States. She joined Colgate following a diverse career as a private practice clinical hygienist, a corporate regional

manager with Ultradent Products, Inc., and a dental hygiene program director. Marti graduated from the University of Louisville,

School of Dental Hygiene with her Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene. She received her Masters of Business Administra-

tion degree from the University of Phoenix. Marti has over 25 years of experience in private practice; 15 years were spent working

with Dr. Gordon Christensen where she was involved with Clinicians Report (CR, formerly known as CRA) research, and lecturing

with Practical Clinical Courses. As a Regional Manager, and a Dental Hygiene Program Director, Marti educated dental hygiene

students, territory representatives, and practicing dental professionals on best products and practice techniques.

Gen Z: Choices and Challenges (3 CEU’s)

Speaker: Cathy Stewart, RDH, BS

Course Description: The current and sometimes shocking health behaviors and trends in the teen

generation can influence their oral and systemic health. Dental professional have a clinical opportunity

to identify risky behaviors. Encouraging Gen Z to make positive health decisions could impact their

choices when challenged.

Participants will engage in a lively discussion on timely topics relating to Gen Z. Dialogue may include

oral and overall health issues associated with nutrition, obesity, eating disorders and substance abuse.

Gen Z, also known as the Global Generation, engage in multiple platforms of social media. This course

identifies and addresses many of the platforms that influence teen's venturous decisions.

Recognizing high risk behaviors will prepare the dental professional to initiate dialogue that may im-

pact a teen for a lifetime.

Speaker Bio: Cathy is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry with a Bachelor's of Science in Dental Hygiene. She

is a member of the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health, American Dental Education Association, and American Dental

Hygienists' Association.

Cathy's dental hygiene career has included clinical practice, experience in the dental insurance industry, public health, hospital

pediatric dentistry, practice consulting and she has served as the Director of Dental Hygiene for a large dental service organization.

With 37 years of dental hygiene experience, Cathy manages the South Central region for Philips Oral Healthcare and presents a

variety of educational programs nationwide.

“Implant Maintenance, Rescue and Regeneration” (3 CEU’s)

Speaker: Thomas Hein, DDS

Course Description: Patients are choosing implants as a state of the art, long-term

option for replacing lost teeth. In order to accomplish longevity and success, there

needs to be a system of protocols for prevention, maintenance and rescue.

Implants require more care than teeth. This discussion will propose a system of

protocols to maintain and rescue implants with case studies and more.

Speaker Bio: Thomas J. Hein, DDS, attended the University of Colorado in Boulder where he received his undergraduate degree in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology. He graduated from the University of Colorado–School of Dentistry in 1980. He previously was an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado, School of Dental Medicine in the Restorative and Implant Department. He is past president of Colorado Academy of Osseointegration. Dr. Hein has been restoring, maintaining and rescuing dental implants for more than 30 years. Dr. Hein practices in Greenwood Village, CO.

“Preventive Prehabilitation of the Oncology Patient” (3 CEU’s)

Speaker: Kris Potts, RDH, BSDH, FAADH

Course Description: It’s more than screening for oral abnormalities and cleaning the teeth of patients diagnosed with Oral Cancer. Cancer of any type affects everyone, if not personally then as a friend, family member or the patient that comes into your office. We have a unique and important role in an Oncology Care Team. This course covers many of the oral concerns of cancer patients and their caregivers, products available to aid in their treatment of those oral concerns and, a few other aspects of care you may not have previously considered.

Speaker Bio: Kris is an enjoyable speaker, rich in expertise and with over three decades in dentistry is ready to share with you current, emerging material to assist you in taking your career as a dental oral health care provider to the next level. She integrates authentic, relatable experiences into her programs and can make learning entertaining, empowering and elicit reflective thinking. The mission of the Kansas Dental Board is to ensure and protect dental health by enforcement of the Kansas Dental Law. Jackie Leakey has been doing just that as she serves to protect the public for the state of Kansas. Following dental assisting school at Flint Hills, Jackie con-tinued her studies at UMKC where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene. As a dental hygiene

leader in her Northeast Component, she served as Secretary, President and Compo-nent Representative. In 2010, she served as President of the Kansas Dental Hygienists’ Association. Jackie has also worked as a Parent Educator for Oral Health Kansas. She graduated as a “Dental Champion” from Class VI, a leadership program for those working to improve the oral health of our state. Her passion for children and adults with special health care needs was shared with Special Olympics from 2010 to 2015 as a Smiles Coordina-tor. Jackie was appointed to the Kansas State Dental Board in 2012. She served as Vice President in 2017. As a board member, she also participates in examinations for both the Central Regional and Western Regional Dental Exam. Her passion for continuing education is evident as she urges all of us to go online to the KDB website to response to the survey sample for online continuing education hour limitations. The state of Kansas requires 30 hours of continuing education every two years for registered dental hygienists. Kansas has no limit on the number of hours that can be obtained online during each license renewal period. Some feel that the online hours should be limited or balanced with face- to- face courses. The Board would appreciate you input or suggestions. You may send your thoughts to the Board by mail, fax or email at your earliest convenience. We are “Kansas proud” of all you are doing for us with the Dental Board! Thank you, Jackie. Submitted by: Kathy Trilli, RDH, MSEd, ECP II

August 2016 August 2017

Dental Board Announces Continuing

Education Survey for Kansas

Dental Hygienists

The Board recently received a state survey sample for online continuing education hour limi-

tations. Generally, each state implements its own continuing education requirements through

rules and regulations. Some states have a regulatory limit on the number of continuing educa-

tion hours that a licensee can obtain online during each license renewal period. Other states,

including Kansas, have no current online limitation. After studying the state survey sample,

the Board has asked for your feedback. Dentists are required to obtain 60 hours of CE each

biennial license renewal period. Dental hygienists are required to obtain 30 hours of CE each

biennial license renewal period. These standards will form the basis of the Board’s online CE

study. Should the Board limit the number of online continuing education courses that are per-

mitted for each biennial license renewal? If so, what should the hour limit be for dentists and

dental hygienists? The Board would greatly appreciate your input on this topic. If you have

input or other suggestions, you may send it to the Board office by mail, fax, or e-mail.

Please send your input as follows:

Mark your Calendars! The NE Kansas Dental Hygienists’ Association will offer two CE opportunities

to earn 7 CEUs this fall!

Join us at the Topeka Public Library on Friday September 29th at 9:00 a.m. to hear

Homeland Security Agent Chuck Clanahan as he addresses the alarming increase

of gun violence in the workplace and how each dental office should consider a

course of action if such an event occurred. This is a course for the entire staff as all

employees can help prevent and prepare for potential situations to ensure both

patient and employee safety. Mr. Clanahan is a highly engaging speaker and his

course will have you sitting on the edge of your set! Seating is limited, so please

register early! (See below for registration information.) 3 CEU’s

Gun violence in the workplace and public arenas has escalated at an alarming rate over the past two

decades. Have you considered the course of action you would take in the dental practice should such an

event occur? An active shooter is an individual engaged in attacking people in the confined and

populated areas. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. All dental staff can help

prevent and prepare for potential active shooter situations to ensure both patient and employee safety.

Chuck Clanahan serves as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Kansas Protective Security Gun

violence in the workplace and public arenas has escalated at an alarming rate over the past two dec-

ades. Advisor (PSA). Mr. Clanahan has over 30 year’s experience in Law Enforcement, Security, Antiterror-

ism, Crisis management, and incident/Accident Response & Recovery Operations in a combination of both

Federal and military service. Mr. Clanahan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice, gradu-

ate of the 208th FBI National Academy and ASIS international board Certified Protection Professional (CPP).

Earn the KDB required ethics credits when you attend the 4 hour CEU course on

Friday October 27th at 8:00 a.m. at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Our two topics

with be ethics (2 CEUs) and Waterline Contamination (2 CEUs). Presenter Tija

Hunter is a 1981 graduate from Missouri College and is AGD/Pace certified with

more than 36 years of chairside experience. Named one of the Top 25 Women

in Dentistry/2015 by Dental Products Report Magazine, she has served as the

ucts Report, Dental Assisting Digest, Dental Economics Magazine, and editorial content board member for

DPR’s newest publication; Modern Dental Assisting. She is the director of the Dental Careers Institute and

Ethics

Patients expect oral healthcare providers to be professional, knowledgeable and ethical. Ethical dilemmas

will arise at some point and decisions must to be made on behalf of the patient. Every dental professional

needs to be familiar with the code of ethics and committed to providing the best possible care.

Dental Unit Waterlines

Not knowing what's in your waterlines could potentially cause a serious problem for dental practices. Re-

ports of patients becoming ill with evidence tracing it back to dental waterlines has opened up a fascinat-

ing discussion. We will talk about the critters that live in our lines, how to reduce or eliminate them, and

make our water safe for our patients!
