    Taipei 101

    Taipei 101 is a 101-floor landmark skyscraperthat claimed the title of worlds tallest build-ing when it opened in 2004. Designed by C.Y.Lee & Partners and constructed by KTRT JointVenture, Taipei 101 recently lost the title of thetallest completed skyscraper in the world, mea-

    suring 449 m (1,473 ft) from ground to roof.(The tallest skyscraper is now the Burj Khalifain Dubai, UAE). Built to withstand typhoonwinds and earthquake tremors, the buildingincorporates many engineering innovations.Taipei 101 also set new records for ascendingelevator speed which has also recently beensurpassed by Burj Khalifa. The landmark haswon numerous international awards for its in-novations. A large mall is located at the base ofthe tower. Its indoor and outdoor observatoriesdraw visitors from all over the world and itsNew Years Eve fireworks display is a regularfeature of international broadcasts.

    Memorial Halls

    The National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall isa famous monument that was erected in memo-ry of Chiang Kai-shek, former President of theRepublic of China.[10] The monument, sur-rounded by a park and a large square incorpo-rating the National Concert Hall and National

    Theater, stands within sight of the Republicof Chinas Presidential Building in TaipeisZhongzheng District.

    The National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall isa memorial to one of the most recognizablefounding fathers of the Republic of China, SunYat-sen, and was completed on May 16, 1972.From the opening of the hall, majority of theexhibits displayed were revolutionary events ofthe national founding fathers at the end of theQing Dynasty. However, recently its functionmoved toward a multi-purpose social, educa-tional and cultural center for the Taiwanesepublic.

    Shopping and Recreation

    Taipei has many night markets, the most famous ofwhich is the Shilin Night Market in the Shilin Dis-trict of the city. The surrounding streets by ShilinNight Market are extremely crowded during theevening, usually opening around 4 PM and operat-ing well past midnight. Most night markets feature

    individual stalls selling a mixture of food, clothing,and consumer goods.Ximending has been a famous area for shoppingand entertainment since the 1930s. Historic struc-tures include a concert hall and a historic cinema.Modern structures house karaoke businesses, artfilm cinemas, wide-release movie cinemas, electronicstores, and a wide variety of restaurants and fash-ion clothing stores.The Xinyi District is popular with tourists andlocals alike for its many entertainment and shop-ping venues, as well as being the home of the Taipei101 building, a prime tourist attraction famous forbeing one of the worlds tallest buildings. Malls inthe area include the sprawling Sh in Kong Mitsu-koshi complex, Taipei 101 mall, Eslite Bookstoresflagship store.
