    TaipeiTaipei (literally Northern Taiwan) is thelargest city in Taiwan and has served asthe de facto capital (provisional capital) ofthe Republic of China (commonly knownas Taiwan) since 1949. It is the political,economic, and cultural center of the coun-try. The city has a subway/elevated light-

    rail system, and is connected by high-speedrail to Kaohsiung. Several universities, theNational Palace Museum and other culturalinstitutions, and Taipei 101 , the worldssecond tallest building, are there.

    GeographyTaipei City is located in the Taipei Ba-sin in northern Taiwan. It is bordered bythe Xindian River on the south, and theDanshui (Tamsui) River on the west. Thegenerally low-lying terrain of the centralareas on the western side of the munici-

    pality slopes upward to the south and eastand especially to the north,where it reaches1,120 metres (3,675 ft) at Cising Moun-

    tain, which the highest (extinct) volcano inTaiwan in Yangmingshan National Park.The northern districts of Shilin and Beitouextend north of the Keelung River and arebordered by Yangmingshan National Park.The Taipei city limits cover an area rankedsixteenth of twenty-five among all countiesand cities in Taiwan.

    EconomyAs the capital of the Republic of China,Taipei has been at the center of rapideconomic development in the country andhas now become one of the global cities inthe production of high technology and itscomponents. This is part of the so-calledTaiwan Miracle which has seen dramaticgrowth in the city following foreign directinvestment in the 1960s. Taiwan is nowa creditor economy, holding one of theworlds largest foreign exchange reserves

    of over US$352 billion as of February2010.

    Taipei and its environs have long been the

    foremost industrial area of Taiwan, con-sisting of industries of the secondary andtertiary sectors. Most of the countrysimportant factories producing textiles andapparel are located there; other industriesinclude the manufacture of electronic prod-ucts and components, electrical machineryand equipment, printed materials, precisionequipment, and foods and beverages. Suchcompanies include Shihlin Electric, Cipher-Lab and Insyde Software. Shipbuilding,including yachts and other pleasure craft,is done in the port of Keelung northeast ofthe city.

    Services, including those related to com-merce, transportation, and banking, havebecome increasingly important. Tourismis a small but significant component of thelocal economy with international visitorstotaling almost 3 million in 2008. Nationalbrands such as China Airlines, ASUS,Mandarin Airlines, Tatung, and Uni Air areheadquartered in Taipei City.
